Sorry if this take sucks, it’s not my fault …

I still haven’t received the $100 million exit fee from Texas and Oklahoma to leave this column in 2024.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133 First Look

Oh big deal. Like you watched the random Big 12 matchup when Texas or Oklahoma played, say, Baylor, and you don’t even know the Pac-12 Network exists.

USC and UCLA are going to be in the Big Ten in 2024?

Texas and Oklahoma are going to be in the SEC in 2024?

Great. Let’s do this already. Let’s get this party started.

I still don’t get how Texas and the Big Ten didn’t pop open a few beers, sit down, and figure it all out, but now it’s official. The Pac-12 and Big 12 are losing the anchor tenants at their respective malls.

In the new world of an expanded College Football Playoff that’s coming, the moves make sense. Progress is okay, and in this case, it’s all going to work great with the timing.

Do I think Texas will win the SEC Championship any time in the near future? Not really. That goes for Oklahoma, too. Whatever.

Either one could finish in the top 11 in the final 2024 College Football Playoff top 25 – the expanded CFP will take the top 12 ranked teams, but one of those will be a Group of Five champ that will probably be ranked outside of the top 12.

That goes for USC and UCLA with the Big Ten – just finish in the top 11, and football-wise and you’re all set.

All of them are all set in terms of revenue and even more explosion. And as I keep telling everyone over and over and over again, it’s going to be okay.

But the travel!

Whatever. The Big Ten teams get on a plane, take a nap, watch a movie, and they’re in LA. We should all be so lucky.

But the tradition!

Oklahoma was a Big 8 team in 1995 before the expansion to what eventually became the Big 12, and Texas was in the Southwest Conference until 1996.

USC and UCLA used to play in the Pac-10. Before that it was the Pac-8. And before that they were a part of the unfortunately-named American Association of Western Universities until 1968.

And everyone was fine. Everyone is going to be fine. It will take you 30 seconds after the ball gets kicked off to adjust.

What’s Next For College Expansion?

GAME … ON.

The Pac-12 has to do something fast, the Big 12 is circling the area looking to pick off more schools, and the Big Ten and SEC and drop the hammer and get just about anyone they really want at any time.

San Diego State. Get ready to be Southern California’s Pac-12 representation.

SMU. I honestly don’t understand why the Pac-12 is pitching so much woo to you – enrollment too small, it’s not like it’s a gateway school to landing more Texas-based teams – but apparently that’s about to be a thing.

UNLV should’ve been a Pac-12 school yesterday, and the Big 12 would be brilliant to go in and totally screw up the Pac-12 by getting there first.

All’s quiet on the Arizona and Arizona State front, but they’re well past ripe for the picking if the Pac-12 doesn’t lock down its media deal fast.

I’m screaming expansion malpractice on the SEC for not following the Big Ten’s move to the coast and not at least floating a three-bus sized public relations rumor about being interested in Oregon and Washington. (And that goes for the Big Ten, too, but it’s better at doing its thing in stealth mode.)

The Big 12 is insane for not grabbing USF to go along with the acquisition of UCF.

The Big Ten is even crazier for not getting Kansas already. And Colorado.

The SEC is nuts for not ponying up some of its cash to pay off whatever is needed for Clemson and/or Florida State to get out of their ACC deal.

That goes triple for North Carolina. That’s the one. That’s the dream of a whale everyone would love to land.

And then there’s the ACC. It had better find a way to put a ring on it and end this friends with benefits thing with Notre Dame as soon as possible, because once the lawyers and money men from other conferences figure out a way to pry the league’s members from the Grant of Rights deal …

But that’s what the rest of the offseason is for. For now, Texas and Oklahoma are going to be in the SEC after this season, and USC and UCLA are going to be in the Big Ten.

And you’re going to have fun watching it all. Really.

College Football Win Totals 2022: How did everyone do?

Contact @ColFootballNews

How did every college football team do this regular season compared to expectations? How did each one do compared to our expectations?

Every year we preview every team and come up with the projected final regular season record. The realistic goal is to be + or – 1 either way as much as possible.

+ or -2, and that’s a miss, and + or -3 is painful. Anything more than that is a total whiff on our part, and/or a shocker to the general win total.

Who overperformed, who underperformed, and who came in about where we thought they would? Again, this is just for the regular season – no conference championships or bowls.

Is 2020 Alabama the greatest team of all-time? Is it 2019 LSU, or 1894 Yale, or …? That’s a matter of opinion. However, what’s easier to do is ask this question.

Where’s 2022 Georgia after its dominant national title win over TCU?

Which national champion came up with the greatest season in the history of college football?

How are you possibly supposed to rank close over 150 years of the best of the best college football teams?

How do you sell the idea that some Ivy League team from the 1800s was among the greatest of all-time based on an opinion? That’s not fair.

That old school team would lose to the 2022 Georgia backups by 295 points.

On talent and ability, trying to rank and contrast today’s college football teams to anything from 100ish years ago is like comparing apples to … Jupiter. It’s a totally different game now.

And then there’s the problem of just how fatally flawed the system for determining a champion used to be. It’s not like anyone could watch three screens of games in 1869 – or 1969. National champions from back in the day – and even as recently as the mid-1990s – were crowned on a guess.

So with all of that in mind, we’ve ranked the 150 greatest national champions of all-time based on how good their seasons wereThe CFN Season Formula is about straight numbers, wins, losses, point totals and strengths of schedules to measure just how strong a campaign really was. It’s not an opinion of how good the teams might have been.

It’s a simple theory. The more wins, and the more big wins, the higher the ranking. The more games a team played, the more chances for losses, wearing down, injuries, or bad days. It’s why some of the highest-ranked teams on this list are from the modern day – the more recent champions played more games.

If you won a national championship playing a schedule of cupcakes and high school teams – looking at you, 1895 Penn – this formula exposes that.

The ground rules.

1. There are more than 150 college football national champions. Over the last 153 years – even though there have only been 152 college football seasons, but whatever – there were plenty of split titles.

Because there was no true national championship game up until the BCS was formed in 1998, crowning a champion was often a popularity contest. Only the top 150 according to the CFN Season Formula make the list.

2. Only the main methods for each era are counted. Sorry, 2017 UCF, and sorry to a few of the Alabama “national champions” that the school continues to brag about. These are based off of the top selection organizations in each era …

FIRST TEAMS OUT …

154. 1911 Penn State (8-0-1)

All-Time Season Score: 14.0344
Key Season Score Element: 5 Bad Wins (wins over teams with three wins or fewer, or not at the highest level at the time) in 9 games
Best Win: Penn State 5, at Cornell 0
Worst Game: Penn State 0, at Navy 0

1911 was a weird college football season. Navy ended up unbeaten, but it finished with three ties. One was against Penn State, and one was against Princeton – both of the split national champions. Penn State had the better year than Princeton with a few more big wins, and with a defense that allowed just 15 points.

153. 1910 Pitt (9-0)

All-Time Season Score: 14.0700
Key Season Score Element: Outscored teams 282-0
Best Win: Pitt 17, Georgetown 0
Worst Game: Pitt 19, Westminster 0

Seven of the nine wins came against teams that weren’t officially in the college football mix and/or finished with fewer than three wins. It was the year when the forward pass became a bigger part of the game, but it didn’t matter to a Pitt D that didn’t allow a point.

152. 1923 Michigan (8-0)

All-Time Season Score: 14.1300
Key Season Score Element: Outscored teams 150-12
Best Win: Michigan 10, Minnesota 0
Worst Game: Michigan 26, Quantico Marines 6

It’s a soft national championship considering there was only one amazing win – over Minnesota in the regular season finale – and a whole slew of mediocre victories over bad Case, Ohio State, and Michigan State teams. The D pitched a shutout in five of the eight games and allowed more than three points once … against Quantico Marines.

151. 1910 Harvard (8-0-1)

All-Time Season Score: 14.1944
Key Season Score Element: Outscored teams 155-5
Best Win: Harvard 12, Brown 0
Worst Game: Harvard 0, Yale 0

There were a few great wins, but they were offset by a whole lot of teams that fall into the Bad Win category. Five of the eight victories were bad, and there was a tie against Yale on the road in the season finale. The D gave up just five points all year, coming in a 27-5 win over a strong Cornell squad.

The CFN Season Formula is based on straight numbers, wins, losses, and strengths of schedules to measure just how good a season really was, and NOT how good we thought all of the teams were.

That’s what the CFN Opinion Rankings are for.

This is all about evaluating every team’s season from start to finish with an emphasis on the big wins, the painful losses, and who had the toughest and easiest roads.

This formula – used to compare seasons on a historical basis, as well as year-by-year – only cares about victories and the raw numbers, completely taking out the eye test.

It’s simple … was your schedule good, and did you win with it? Then your ranking is high. Was your schedule mediocre? This exposes that. Here’s the breakdown of how the CFN Season Formula is calculated.

One more note before getting started. The idea of the “best” and “worst” wins are based on how important the wins are according to the formula. The win over the key rival is obviously the biggest moment, but it might not have been the win over the best team on the slate.

Basically, which teams had the most fun, and which teams didn’t?

Washington State vs UCLA Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

The Cougars can play just enough defense to keep this close.

They were able to do it the first time in a tough 67-66 loss to UCLA up in Pullman, and that D can travel. It’s able to keep scores low and the games in range, the offense will keep cranking it up from three and hope to generate points in bunches, and everything has to work.

UCLA does a lot of things right, but it doesn’t do much from three, it doesn’t get to the line, and there’s a problem if Wazzu can get hot from the outside.

But …

Why UCLA Will Win

Washington State has a wee bit of a problem on the road.

It was able to get by Arizona in a stunner a month ago in Tucson, but it’s 2-7 overall in true road games.

The defense is able to keep the team in games, but the offense just doesn’t have the firepower to get on the move and generate easy points when the threes aren’t dropping. It’s a struggle for the O to get to 70 home, and it’s like pulling teeth for the attack to get there on the road.

UCLA will force way too many turnovers, it’ll get it’s own offense rolling, and …

What’s Going To Happen

20 in a row.

UCLA has yet to lose at home this year and it’s been amazing in Pauley going back to last season.

No, this won’t be any sort of a shootout, and that’s just fine with the Bruins. They do defense better, they’ll dominate the turnover battle, and they’ll push through in a wee bit of a grind.

Oregon State vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Oregon State Will Win

Oregon State can do this. It just has to keep Arizona from being okay from the field.

Duh, the more a team struggles at shooting the better the chance the other side has at winning, but Oregon State really, really needs Arizona to be off. It really, really needs to force mistakes and crank up its solid defense.

For all of its problems, Oregon State is able to keep teams to around 66 points. It has to slow this to a crawl, and it’ll have a shot if it keeps the Cats to under 42% from the field because …

Why Arizona Will Win

Oregon State has yet to win when allowing the other side to hit 42% or more of its shots. Arizona is almost incapable of shooting that poorly.

With the size inside and the best shooting team from three in the Pac-12, Arizona hovers around 49% from the field and has yet to lose when it made 38% or more of its shots.

In the first meeting – an 86-74 win – it made 53% of its shots from the field. The only thing that didn’t make it worse was a slew of turnovers.

No, the Cats aren’t unbeatable at home – Washington State as able to roll in a shocker a few weeks ago, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Cats are unbeatable at home against a team that can’t manufacture points on the move or with the extra pass.

The Oregon State defense is good enough to keep this from getting too insane, but Arizona will bring at least 80 points with it out of the locker room. Oregon State can’t keep up with that in any way.

Oregon vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

The Ducks have picked it back up.

They still have brain cramps here and there when the offense stops working, but for the most part the defense has been able to hold up, there’s no problem on the boards, and everything is fine when the D can hold teams to under 41% from the field.

Oregon is 12-0 when keeping teams to under that mark – and that includes Arizona in a 70-60 win up in Eugene.

Arizona is a terrific shooting team – helped by the inside presence – but but it’s not above struggling from time to time, especially from three. It turns it over too much, the defense isn’t anything special, and …

Why Arizona Will Win

Arizona is playing way too well.

It’s been better from three over the last several weeks, the inside production is there, and more than anything else, the defense has stepped it up in a big way.

Ever since Oregon hit just about everything in the Wildcat loss a few weeks ago, the defense has clamped down hard. It held offenses to under 40% from the field in six of the last nine games, the D from three has been suffocating, and it all feeds into the offense manufactures points in every way.

Arizona is great on the move, better at getting to the free throw line, and again, the threes are dropping lately.

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon has a good mix of things to at least keep this close and make it a battle.

It’s good enough on the boards to keep the Wildcats from generating a slew of second chance points, but it can’t run with them. Expect one big second half scoring burst to bust through a tight game that’s going to be a little bit of a struggle early.

Washington vs UCLA Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

The Huskies can play some defense.

They’re great at coming up with blocked shots, they’re strong at guarding the three, and when they keep teams to under 45% from the field, they win.

They’re 13-2 when the defense can keep teams under 45%, and 0-8 when allowing offenses to shoot that or better.

This is a good shooting UCLA team that gets a whole lot of points on the move, but there isn’t much happening on the outside. Getting into the interior plays into the Washington defensive style, and …

Why UCLA Will Win

Yeah, all that is great and all, but UCLA won at Washington 74-49 a month ago.

The Bruins dominated by holding their own on the boards against the good rebounding Huskies. There were plenty of chances – the home side couldn’t hit anything from three.

Yes, the offense is good, but it’s the defense that wins games. It’s great at forcing mistakes, it doesn’t give teams easy points on giveaways, and …

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA is struggling.

It couldn’t get the O going against Arizona, and the defense buckled against the USC threes. Now it’s on a two-game losing streak, but that’s about to change with the defense.

11-0 at home, UCLA hasn’t allowed 70 points in Pauley and that’s not about to change. The team will get its groove back after the last two losses.

Colorado Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Buffaloes miss from the Pac-12 slate?

It would’ve been nice to have Cal on the schedule. That’s one of the few teams in the Pac-12 that Colorado – even an improved one under Deion Sanders – can look to for a likely win, but on the plus side, not having to deal with Washington helps.

There are five Pac-12 road games, with dates at Oregon, UCLA, and Utah the biggest problems. However …

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Colorado Football Schedule What Really Matters

Unlike most Pac-12 teams, Colorado doesn’t have to deal with a run of three road games in four weeks. Throw in the week off coming on October 21st, and there’s a nice midseason stretch when the team only leaves Boulder once from October 7th to November 17th. That’s when the wins have to start piling up, because …

Colorado Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s a rough slate for Coach Prime’s bunch.

The improvements are coming, but there’s still a whole lot of rebuilding to do. Starting out at TCU and then dealing with Nebraska doesn’t exactly ease into the era. Throw in the always testy showdown against Colorado State, and there’s no true layup on the slate.

There are enough winnable games to make a big jump, though. Get by Nebraska and Colorado State, and the Buffs can looks to home games against Stanford and Arizona to get in the mix for six victories and a bowl. Lose any of those, and it’ll be tough.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Washington State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cougars miss from the Pac-12 slate?

Washington got to miss USC and Utah last year, and now it’s Washington State’s turn to catch the mammoth break. The Trojans rolled Wazzu 30-14, the Utes won a 21-17 fight, and now they’re been replaced with Colorado and UCLA being left off the Pac-12 schedule. That’s a solid deal.

Not all is perfect with the Cougar slate, though.

Washington State Football Schedule What Really Matters

Washington State gets five Pac-12 road games. One of them is Washington, but that counts. That also means four of the last six games are away from home, and it gets even worse than that.

The Arizona State game is on the road on October 28th. The only thing that matters about that – besides the travel – is Tempe, Arizona is probably going to be nicer weather-wise than Pullman.

Arizona? That’s a home game, but the weather probably won’t be that bad on October 14th. Colorado is used to playing in snow and cold – if that happens – meaning Stanford on November 4th is likely the only team to potentially be affected by the surroundings.

Washington State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

The Cougars were able to win seven games last year even with USC and Utah to deal with. This schedule is just workable enough to hope to at least his the 2022 mark.

Wisconsin is a home game, but this should be a far more dangerous Badger team. Going to Colorado State and dealing with Northern Colorado shouldn’t be a problem.

Stanford, Arizona, Colorado. None of them went bowling, and all three are home dates. Take care of at least two of the non-conference games, handle the winnable home dates, and pull off a win at, say, Cal and/or Arizona State, and all should be okay.
