Next we’ll do the full ranking from 1 to 130 of all the head coaches going into the 2020 college football season – whatever it’s going to be and however it’s going to look – but first, here are the galleries with the CFN head coach rankings by conference.

How did we pick who goes where? Let’s just say the criteria was very, very loose.

It’s a combination of the head coaches with the best resumés, and who has the most experience, and who has done a great job at the toughest places, and who has the most longevity, and who you’d want right now to be your head man, and who has more to prove, and …

Again, it’s very loose. In general, those who have consistently done a great job at the toughest places get ranked higher.

Disagree with any of this? Great … if your guy rocks – or struggles – we’ll adapt and adjust the rankings throughout the season.

College Football Rankings 2020, CFN Previews Of All 130 Teams

The CFN Preview 2020 college football rankings, with the preseason look at all 130 teams.

The CFN Preview 2020 college football rankings, with the preseason look at all 130 teams.

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine a world with a college football season that’s about to kick into high gear with practices, media days, and …

Okay, so nothing is going on like normal.

No matter what happens over the next several weeks and months, we can still take an educated guess as to how good all 130 FBS college football teams are as they go into whatever a 2020 college football season will/can/might be.

Spring football was almost non-existent at most places – making doing all the previews and rankings far more interesting than normal – and injures, the transfer portal, and this sinister virus are all going to play roles over the next several weeks. We’ll do this all again just before whatever this season is – hopefully, and most importantly, safely – kicks off.

For now, the rankings aren’t about where the teams are projected to end up – those are coming later once the new-look schedules are locked down. The 2020 CFN Preview rankings are based on how good we think all the teams are right now.

All 130 Team Previews | 101-130
76-100 | 51-75 | 26-50 | 11-25 | Top 10

130. UConn Huskies

Relative Strength: Special Teams
Relative Concern: Offensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 126
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 126
UConn Quick Take: Life as an independent will be interesting for a UConn program that has to rely on a slew of transfers and young parts to turn around an ugly run. The Huskies are still in a rebuilding mode.
UConn 2020 CFN Team Preview

129. Akron Zips

Relative Strength: Wide Receiver
Relative Concern: Offensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 129
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 125
Akron Quick Take: There’s no way, no how the Zips can be as bad as they were last season as the only FBS program to go winless. The offense will do something as long as the line can figure something out fast. Losing a few transfers and not having a real offseason to get things in place hurts.
Akron 2020 CFN Team Preview

128. New Mexico State Aggies

Relative Strength: Secondary
Relative Concern: Linebacker
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 129
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 127
New Mexico State Quick Take: There’s a veteran crew returning on a defense that was totally miserable, especially against the run. The production has to be there with all of the experience, and the offense has to find something that consistently works.
New Mexico State 2020 CFN Team Preview

127. UTEP Miners

Relative Strength: Wide Receiver
Relative Concern: Defensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 128
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 130
UTEP Quick Take: The defense has been an ongoing problem for the Miners, but the woes on an offense that just can’t get working have been the bigger issue. There’s hope for a little more punch, but the defensive front has to stop someone.
UTEP 2020 CFN Team Preview

126. UMass Minutemen

Relative Strength: Wide Receiver
Relative Concern: Defensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 130
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 128
UMass Quick Take: There’s still a whole lot of work to still do for a defense that was magnificently miserable against the run. There’s a little hope for an offense that should be better up front and has a few promising playmakers, but this is another season about building things up.
UMass 2020 CFN Team Preview

[lawrence-related id=515331]

125. Bowling Green Falcons

Relative Strength: Running Back
Relative Concern: Defensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 124
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 124
Bowling Green Quick Take: There’s a shot this turns out to be a way-too-low ranking if the offense finally learns how to score a little bit. The defense isn’t going to be a brick wall, but the offense should improve with steadier quarterback play.
Bowling Green 2020 CFN Team Preview

124. Texas State Bobcats

Relative Strength: Wide Receiver
Relative Concern: Defensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 114
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 119
Texas State Quick Take: Eventually the up-tempo offense will start to work and the Bobcats will tag someone decent. The defense can’t let the team get out of games so quickly, but the offense has to go on a few early scoring drives to help the cause.
Texas State 2020 CFN Team Preview

123. South Alabama Jaguars

Relative Strength: Linebacker
Relative Concern: Defensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 119
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 112
South Alabama Quick Take: Where’s the positive offensive identity? The Jaguars need to get more out of the backfield. On the other side, the back eight is promising, but the defensive line is all but starting from scratch.
South Alabama 2020 CFN Team Preview

122. ULM Warhawks

Relative Strength: Wide Receiver
Relative Concern: Offensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 100
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 111
ULM Quick Take: This might be an embarrassingly low preseason ranking if the quarterback play is sharp from the start. The receivers are going to be excellent, but the O line is going through an overhaul. The defense has to do more to hold serve after finishing as the third-worst in the nation.
ULM 2020 CFN Team Preview

121. Old Dominion Monarchs

Relative Strength: Linebacker
Relative Concern: Running Back
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 125
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 115
Old Dominion Quick Take: There are a few great players who’ll be among the best in Conference USA – there just aren’t enough of them. The lines have to be a whole lot more consistent, and the secondary needs to be better early on. New head coach – and former Penn State offensive coordinator – Ricky Rahne should provide some pop.
Old Dominion 2020 CFN Team Preview

120. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

Relative Strength: Offensive Line
Relative Concern: Secondary
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 96
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 127
Coastal Carolina Quick Take: Very, very quietly, this could be a sneaky-good Sun Belt squad with a strong-looking O line paving the way for RB CJ Marable. The D needs more of a pass rush.
Coastal Carolina 2020 CFN Team Preview

119. UTSA Roadrunners

Relative Strength: Secondary
Relative Concern: Offensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 118
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 113
UTSA Quick Take: After years of trying to win football games without scoring points, UTSA appears ready to try cranking up an offense under new head coach Jeff Traylor. The parts aren’t great, though. The D has enough playmakers to keep games close.
UTSA 2020 CFN Team Preview

118. New Mexico Lobos

Relative Strength: Quarterback
Relative Concern: Defensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 120
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 104
New Mexico Quick Take: There’s a shot to turn things around quickly under new head coach Danny Gonzales if the program can finally know what it’s like to have a healthy quarterback. The receivers aren’t awful, but they’ll have to be ready for shootouts to make up for a rough defense.
New Mexico 2020 CFN Team Preview

117. Northern Illinois Huskies

Relative Strength: Linebacker
Relative Concern: Defensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 92
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 88
Northern Illinois Quick Take: This could go one of two ways. Either this is really, really low, and NIU kicks it all in under Thomas Hammock with an offense that will be far better, or this is just about right considering the MAC is going to be stronger. The defense could’ve really used a normal offseason.
Northern Illinois 2020 CFN Team Preview

116. Rice Owls

Relative Strength: Wide Receiver
Relative Concern: Offensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 115
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 122
Rice Quick Take: It took a few years to get things going under head man Mike Bloomgren, and now is when the payoff is supposed to start. The Owls have one of the sneakiest-good receiving corps in Conference USA, and nine starters should be back on D.
Rice 2020 CFN Team Preview

115. Charlotte 49ers

Relative Strength: Running Back
Relative Concern: Defensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 72
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 103
Charlotte Quick Take: The overall talent is still lacking for the young program, but there’s a lot of experience on a team that’s a whole lot of fun. RB Benny LeMay and a potentially loaded receiving corps should make up for issues on the defensive side.
Charlotte 2020 CFN Team Preview

114. Georgia State Panthers

Relative Strength: Offensive Line
Relative Concern: Quarterback
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 75
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 118
Georgia State Quick Take: Replacing QB Dan Ellington is tough, and the offense likely won’t be as time or as explosive, but it’s a solid team across the board that needs to get stronger in the secondary.
Georgia State 2020 CFN Team Preview

113. Eastern Michigan Eagles

Relative Strength: Defensive Line
Relative Concern: Running Back
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 80
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 110
Eastern Michigan Quick Take: This isn’t the Eastern Michigan of several years ago – it’s expected to be decent now – but it’s still going to be a fight to rebuild. The offensive backfield needs too much work and the defense will be more plucky than nasty after allowing over 430 yards per game.
Eastern Michigan 2020 CFN Team Preview

112. Liberty Flames

Relative Strength: Running Back
Relative Concern: Linebacker
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 65
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 116
Liberty Quick Take: Hugh Freeze is always going to pump out a great offense, but the Flames lose some terrific parts, starting with WR Antonio Gandy-Golden. Watch out for Maine transfer Joshua Mack at running back to carry the load with little drop-off on O, but the defense will struggle too much early on.
Liberty 2020 CFN Team Preview

111. Miami University RedHawks

Relative Strength: Offensive Line
Relative Concern: Linebacker
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 47
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 107
Miami University Quick Take: Even with the MAC championship, the offense was never anything special. It could be a whole lot better if the talented, veteran line is stronger. After a year of living in opposing backfields, the defense has some overhauling to do.
Miami University 2020 CFN Team Preview

110. FIU Golden Panthers

Relative Strength: Offensive Line
Relative Concern: Wide Receiver
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 85
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 79
FIU Quick Take: Butch Davis hasn’t had a problem at reloading parts, but he has to do a whole lot with a defense that misses most of its stronger tacklers – getting into the backfield is going to be a problem. The offensive line will be great, but the rest of the attack has to take advantage of it.
FIU 2020 CFN Team Preview

109. UNLV Rebels

Relative Strength: Quarterback
Relative Concern: Defensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 106
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 98
UNLV Quick Take: New head coach Marcus Arroyo has a nice offensive backfield to work with, and the offense should be more explosive, but the change only works if the defense starts to be more consistent.
UNLV 2020 CFN Team Preview

108. North Texas Mean Green

Relative Strength: Wide Receiver
Relative Concern: Offensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 111
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 82
North Texas Quick Take: Can the offense get its groove back after a stunningly mediocre year? The offensive backfield needs some work, but the receivers are there to be good again. The secondary that got rocked needs a big improvement.
North Texas 2020 CFN Team Preview

107. Central Michigan Chippewas

Relative Strength: Wide Receiver
Relative Concern: Quarterback
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 71
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 121
Central Michigan Quick Take: The program that was so close to winning the MAC title in the first year under Jim McElwain – a massive turnaround – has a huge overhaul to deal with. The receiving corps will be good and the defense should be fine, but there are way too many key losses.
Central Michigan 2020 CFN Team Preview

106. Kent State Golden Flashes

Relative Strength: Quarterback
Relative Concern: Defensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 66
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 123
Kent State Quick Take: After a brilliant finish to last season with a fun-FlashFast offense that went on a magical run, the team should come into the season all puffy-chested and confident. QB Dustin Crum is a veteran now who can crank up the attack, but the defense front has to be stronger to start winning more.
Kent State 2020 CFN Team Preview

105. Troy Trojans

Relative Strength: Wide Receiver
Relative Concern: Defensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 90
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 90
Troy Quick Take: If the Trojans don’t have the best receiving corps in the Sun Belt, they’re not all that far off. The defensive front and secondary are too much of a problem to win the Sun Belt, but the offense will hang with everyone.
Troy 2020 CFN Team Preview

104. Toledo Rockets

Relative Strength: Offensive Line
Relative Concern: Linebacker
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 73
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 93
Toledo Quick Take: Even when Toledo isn’t great – like last year – it’s still pretty good. This year it should be better, starting with one of the MAC’s best offensive lines and running games. The defense has to prove it can be a whole lot better.
Toledo 2020 CFN Team Preview

103. Western Michigan Broncos

Relative Strength: Defensive Line
Relative Concern: Secondary
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 42
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 96
Western Michigan Quick Take: Yeah, this might be laughably low if the offense is steady and the defensive front seven really does take over like it probably should. There are a few better teams in the MAC, but winning the conference title is on the table.
Western Michigan 2020 CFN Team Preview

102. Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders

Relative Strength: Quarterback
Relative Concern: Defensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 107
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 99
Middle Tennessee Quick Take: After a down year with a different style of overall play, the Blue Raiders should be more dangerous with Asher O’Hara a good all-around quarterback who should shine behind a veteran line. The defensive front, though has to be a whole lot better.
Middle Tennessee 2020 CFN Team Preview

101. USF Bulls

Relative Strength: Defensive Line
Relative Concern: Offensive Line
2019 CFN Final Season Formula Ranking: 104
2019 CFN Preview Ranking: 78
USF Quick Take: There’s WAY too much talent in place to be quite this bad in the first season under Jeff Scott, but the offense has a long way to go to be merely mediocre. The defense will keep the Bulls in most games.

Pac-12 to go with a conference-only schedule. 5 Things To Know.

The Pac-12 announced that it’s about to follow the Big Ten’s lead and go with a conference-only schedule.

What are the five big things that matter?

[jwplayer lEDBLOLS]

5. It’s probably going to be a ten game Pac-12 season … maybe

4. The Big Loser Is …
3. Ranking The Lost Non-Conference Games
2. Every Pac-12 Team’s Missing Pac-12 Games
1. Pac-12 Schedule: What Will Happen?

It would make the most sense in terms of competitive balance if it’s an 11-game all-Pac-12 schedule – everyone plays everyone.

At the moment, UCLA and Utah both miss Oregon. In an 11-game schedule, no big whoop since the Bruins and Utes would play the loaded Ducks just like everyone else win, but in a ten-game slate, one of those two would catch a massive break.

After doing some digging, friend of the program @MichaelJLev – football reporter for the Arizona Daily Star – thinks the odds-on favorite model will be ten games, mostly for the same reason that the Big Ten will go with it – flexibility.

The idea might be to go two games on, one off, to allow as much rest and as many options to move things around as possible.

And here’s where it gets quirky.

ESPN reported that the Pac-12 would be thinking about delaying the start of the season to buy more time for USC and UCLA, because the Los Angeles area is such a hot spot.

So then what? Start in October? A ten-game season might be pushed well into December, and then what happens to the College Football Playoff rankings and the bowl games? Would a backloaded schedule be packed together, or could it be spread out over 14 weeks or so by starting in September?

Let’s just say it’s a fluid situation.

NEXT: The big loser is …

2020 Preseason CFN Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year

OT Penei Sewell, Jr., Oregon
The Pac-12 is going to be fun. It’s going to have a few high-powered offenses with big passing attacks, there are plenty of talented young quarterbacks, and it should be an interesting year with a whole lot of big games that will get national attention.

And the best player is going to be an offensive tackle?

The 6-6, 330-pound blaster has been one of the nation’s best pass protectors over the last few years, and last season he won the Outland Trophy as the nation’s best lineman. He’s big, he’s quick, and he’s everything you want in a left tackle.

And he’ll also be the best player in the Pac-12.

2020 Preseason CFN Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year

LB Hamilcar Rashed, Sr. Oregon State
He might have gone unnoticed last year. but that’s not happening this time around.

It would be nice if the 6-4, 238-pounder was a little bit beefier – at least the pro scouting types would like that – but his quickness and pass rushing ability  are explosive enough to make up for the bulk.

He led the Pac-12 with 22.5 tackles for loss – the three players who tied for second came up with 14 – and he didn’t have a bowl game or a Pac-12 Championship appearance like Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux and Utah’s Bradlee Anae. He also led the conference with 14 sacks to go along with his 62 tackles.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Oregon Ducks Offense 3 Things To Know

The offense wasn’t good enough. With all the weapons the Ducks had, and with a quarterback at the level of Justin Herbert, averaging 433 yards and 35 points per game was fine, but again, not enough – it failed to push past 28 points six times.

Herbert might be done, the offensive line might need a reboot, and there’s some uncertainty at several spots, but the Ducks landed a star in new offensive coordinator head coach Joe Moorhead. The former Mississippi State head coach and Penn State offensive coordinator is one of the best offensive assistants in the business, but he first has to rebuild the offensive front to make it all go.

CFN in 60 Video: Oregon Ducks Preview
[jwplayer lEDBLOLS]

Penei Sewell might be the best NFL player in college football. At least, the junior offensive tackle might be the best NFL non-quarterback in the country, and he’ll have to play like it as the one starting offensive lineman returning.

There’s decent size – likely new right tackle Steven Jones is 6-7, 349 pounds, and Sewell goes 6-6 and 330 – but there’s going to be an adjustment. Fortunately, Moorhead is good at this, and head coach Mario Cristobal’s specialty is the offensive front.

It also helps to get back a killer group of running backs. Junior CJ Verdell led the team with 1,220 yards and eight scores – highlighted by a 257-yard game against Washington State and a 208-yard effort in the Pac-12 title win over Utah – but he’s not alone.

Speedy Travis Dye returns after finishing second on the team with 658 yards, and 6-1, 215-pound Cyrus Habibi-Likio returns after thumping for a team-high ten rushing scores.

Oh yeah … Herbert. He was terrific – the guy led the way to a Pac-12 title and a Rose Bowl win – but the offense was never quite consistent enough, and there were too many games when he didn’t turn it loose. He’s a Los Angeles Charger now, making 6-5, 220-pound sophomore Tyler Shough the apparent next star up.

Shough won’t add a whole lot of mobility, but he’s a pro-style passer with next-level tools. Adding some help is Boston College transfer Anthony Brown to at least be the veteran No. 2 guy.

On the way is Jay Butterfield – one of the team’s top recruits – to likely redshirt and be one of the main guys in a few years, if he can’t set the world on fire and take the gig right away.

There might not be a superstar college football household name in the receiving corps, bit it’s going to be really, really good, starting with leading returning receiver Johnny Johnson – who led the way with 57 catches for 536 yards and seven scores – along with Jaylon Redd, who added 50 grabs with seven touchdowns.

Throw in USC transfer Devon Williams, the expected emergence of 2018 super-recruit Bryan Addison, and with a whole lot of talented young parts being worked into the mix, and look out.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Colorado Buffaloes Offense 3 Things To Know

New head coach Karl Dorrell is keeping around Darrin Chiaverini to be the offensive coordinator – after sharing the duties since 2016 – but he’s going to have a little work to do for an offense that finished ninth in the Pac-12, tenth in scoring, and was maddeningly inconsistent.

And it has to replace a whole lot of key parts, starting at quarterback with Steven Montez gone after throwing for over 2,800 yards and 17 touchdowns with ten picks in a relatively disappointing run. Now it’s going to be a fight with a whole slew of options.

6-5, 220-pound Tyler Lytle has the size, the arm, and the time around the team to step in right away, but freshman Brendon Lewis is the 6-3, 210-pound dual-threat recruit to build the program around for the next few years. Also in the mix is senior Sam Noyer, who entered the transfer portal and chose to return to Colorado – for now.

CFN in 60 Video: Colorado Buffaloes Preview
[jwplayer tX3Phs6i]

The running game needs to be stronger and more effective, coming up with 1,804 yards and 14 scores, averaging just 4.1 yards per carry. It was a slight improvement from 2018, but it still wasn’t good enough.

Slashing junior Alex Fontenot is back after leading the team with 874 yards and five scores, and 6-2, 215-pound sophomore Jaren Mangham brings a little thump after running for 441 yards and three scores. It’s a deep group that should be fine with more of a commitment to the ground attack – expect more of a rotation.

In the receiving corps, KD Nixon … let’s go. He’s a potential volume-catcher target who should be fine with Laviska Shenault and Tony Brown gone. Dimitri Stanley is back after making 29 grabs – he’s a big-time athlete who could blow up as a sophomore – and 6-3, 255-pound Brady Russell is a good-sized tight end who can catch. The overall developed depth, though, isn’t there.

The offensive line was a relative plus last season, and it should be again. Three starters are expected to be back, but there’s going to be a whole lot of shuffling around to get the right starting five. It’s not a huge or deep line, but it should be effective again.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: UCLA Bruins Offense 3 Things To Know

Eventually this offense is going to work … right? After all, it’s Chip Kelly, offensive coordinator Justin Frye also works with the O line, and the youth movement from the last few years might finally start to pay off.

The Bruins averaged over 400 yards per game, but they only managed to come up with more than 18 points six times. There were major power outages, way too many turnovers, and lousy pass protection that didn’t help the overall cause – the Bruins were 120th in the nation in sacks allowed.

CFN in 60 Video: UCLA Bruins Preview
[jwplayer moIeu6eq]

Start there. Kelly and Frye inherited a bad offensive line situation, and they haven’t been able to make it a whole lot stronger. By the end of last year they started two freshmen and one sophomore, and now they get three starters back – Murray, the then-sophomore, has transferred to Oklahoma – who should know what they’re doing.

Finally, the backfield might just be good enough to do some steady damage. QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson is in his third year, and while it’s been rocky, he has had his moments. the 507-yard, five touchdown day against Washington State was fantastic – but just not enough of them.

He threw for over 2,700 yards with 21 touchdowns and 12 picks, but he’ll be pushed hard by former Washington transfer Colson Yankoff, a 6-4 former star recruit who can run. Also potentially in the mix is one of the team’s top recruits, Parker McQuarrie out of New Hampshire – a 6-7, 208-pound pro-style bomber who might just be thrown to the wolves right away.

RB Joshua Kelley is off being a Los Angeles Charger, but Demetric Felton is a veteran who finished second on the team with 331 yards. Martell Irby is a smallish quick back who fits the system, and in comes Brittain Brown from Duke, a bigger back who can do a little of everything.

– Tight end Devin Asiasi took off and now he’s a New England Patriot, but the top four other targets are back. Leading receiver Kyle Philips is back after catching 60 passes for 681 yards and five scores – he has high-volume potential – and 6-4 junior Chase Cota is a big target on the outside.

The depth took a hit, though, with three tight ends transferring and WR Theo Howard leaving for Oklahoma. Even so, there are enough decent parts to start doing more for the passing game.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Washington State Cougars Offense 3 Things To Know

– Who better than new head coach Nick Rolovich to keep the high-octane passing tradition of Washington State going? He and offensive coordinator Brian Smith – who handled the gig at Hawaii for the last few years might not be able to crank out the passing offense like last year’s O did, but they’ll give it a shot.

Here’s the thing – yeah, Wazzu threw for a nation-high 437 yards per game, but it’s not like it led the way to a whole lot of wins.

First, they have to find a quarterback with Anthony Gordon and everyone else who threw a pass gone. 6-4, 216-pound sophomore Cammon Cooper is the most likely option – he has the tools, size, and arm to make it all go – but 6-5, 229-pound redshirt freshman Gunner Cruz was a big get last year, Jayden De Laura was this year’s top recruit – he’s from Honolulu – and JUCO transfer and former New Mexico Lobo Will Heckman is transferring in.

Not only do the Cougars have to find a new quarterback, but they need new receivers, too, with the top three wideouts from last year needing to be replaced.

It’s Washington State. It’s going to be okay.

6-3, 186-pound senior Davontavean Martin should be one of the new starts after catching 43 passes for 564 yards and four scores, and 5-8, 162-pound senior Renard Bell should be more of a volume catcher after making 53 grabs. Junior Travell Harris made 47 catches with five scores – he can work inside or out.

The offensive line’s job isn’t going to change. Three starters are expected back, starting with 6-7, 324-pound junior Abraham Lucas at one tackle job, and with 6-5, 300-pound senior Liam Ryan a veteran on the other side. As a function of the offense, the Cougars led the Pac-12 in sacks allowed, and that should continue as long as there aren’t a slew of injuries and if the depth comes together right away.

But it’s Washington State – it had the nation’s second-worst running game.

Even so, junior Max Borghi is back after running for 817 yards and 11 scores, and he also caught 86 passes with five touchdowns. Speedy Deon McIntosh is back, too, as the No. 2 back who can also catch.
