Why Gonzaga Will Win

Devastating.

USC had the exact right type of team to give Gonzaga problems – the length, the experience, the defense, the style – and it didn’t matter a lick.

The Bulldogs got up fast, rolled to an 85-66 win that wasn’t even that close, and the steady dominance that made this season so amazing continued into the Final Four.

USC supposedly had the inside presence to be a defensive problem – Drew Timme scored 23.

USC supposedly had the ability to hang around on the boards – Gonzaga won the rebounding margin by 12.

There’s no panic in this Gonzaga team, it can manufacture points inside and out, and it doesn’t have any one flaw to exploit. Few teams move the ball around better and more efficiently, few teams are able to lock down as well defensively inside and out, and few teams are better at scoring in a hurry in transition off the steal.

Either Gonzaga has to beat itself with the type of performance it hadn’t shown all year, or else UCLA has to show off an even greater defensive performance than it showed against Michigan.

Gonzaga isn’t going to make just 39% of its shots and it’s not going to be held scoreless from the field over the last five minutes.

Why UCLA Will Win

Defense, defense, defense.

UCLA was struggling a bit defensively coming into the tournament, but it was able to crank the intensity up to a whole other level when it absolutely had to.

In overtime against Alabama, the D triggered the big run from the O. Late against Michigan, it held firm over the final few minutes – and, okay, it caught a few nice breaks from missed Wolverine shots, too.

It’s going to take a perfect game pitched by the defense, a whole lot stronger a performance from the offensive side than it showed against Michigan, and it’s going to take the right attitude.

UCLA isn’t going to think this way, but it’s an 11-seed play-in team. It’s playing with house money, and it’s supposed to get blown out by a high-powered Gonzaga team that’s looking untouchable.

The pressure is all on the other side, but …

What’s Going To Happen

This is a high-powered Gonzaga team that’s looking untouchable for a reason.

Jalen Suggs is only a freshman, but he’s playing like a seasoned veteran who doesn’t make mistakes as the perfect quarterback for this group of star talents. the size, the versatility, and the steadiness are all showing through this run.

UCLA was able to stall a high-powered Alabama team, it all but shut down the explosive Wolverines, and it stuffed a BYU squad that came the close to giving Gonzaga problems. It’s used to stopping unstoppable offenses, but it’s not going to have the scoring consistency needed to pull it off.

The Bruins will avoid the knockout punch two minutes in like USC suffered, but it’s coming.

It won’t be a walk in the park, but the methodical greatness of Gonzaga will motor on through to the national championship game.

Gonzaga vs USC Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why USC Will Win

This is the exact type of team that should and could give Gonzaga a whole lot of problems.

Don’t let the 82-68 blowout over Oregon fool you – this is a defensive-minded team usually wins games by controlling the tempo a bit and clamping down in all phases.

It’s one of the tallest teams in the tournament, and it shows – it leads the nation in blocks, it’s one of the best in the country on the boards, and it’s normally great at stopping the three.

Oregon couldn’t make a thing from the outside, shot just 38% from the field, and before it knew what happened, it got rolled by a USC run in the first half and that was it.

The Trojans are a killer on the offensive glass, they allow teams to make a mere 39% of their shots, and they get to the free throw line a whole lot.

Basically, they have the ability to stop Gonzaga inside and out.

So what’s the problem?

[lawrence-related id=529974]

Why Gonzaga Will Win

For a team that’s so strong at generating big defensive stops and is so good at scoring on its own terms, it turns the ball over a whole bunch.

The Trojans turned it over 14 times against Oregon and 13 times against Kansas. That wasn’t a problem as the Trojans annihilated both teams – and Drake, too, in the opener – but Gonzaga has the ability to take a few steals and turn them into a turn-the-lights-out ten point run.

Yes, USC has been amazing so far in the tournament, but it’s now about to deal with the ruthless relentlessness of an offense that has way too many weapons and stars.

Corey Kispert might be the best player in the country this season. He only took one shot in the first half and Creighton was up by ten.

Almost no one moves the ball around better, it’s one of the best teams in the country at generating steals, and this team finds a way to make baskets no matter what.

The machine doesn’t stop.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

No one in the tournament is playing better than USC.

It’s as if the Trojans were just waiting for the real games to start, and then they turned it all on with a total destruction of three solid teams in Drake, Kansas and Oregon had the ability to get to this point with the right run.

Everything is working from the field – USC should be able to keep up.

The defense has the ability, length and talent to matchup with the Gonzaga playmakers – there will be plenty of blocks.

The Bulldogs aren’t going to win the battle on the boards, and they’re not going to be able to get into the normal rhythm that keeps on pressing through even when things aren’t right.

Yeah, USC has the right makeup and mix to pull this off, and it’ll do it in a thriller. The Trojans will pull this off with one last defensive stop.

Michigan vs UCLA Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why UCLA Will Win

Is there any team outside of Gonzaga playing with more confidence?

Alabama hit what appeared to be a soul-crushing three to force overtime, and all the Bruins did was roar back with 23 points in five minutes for an 88-78 victory.

It helped that Bama couldn’t hit a free throw to save its season/life, but the Bruins kept attacking, kept making their own free throws, and they kept this improbable run going by – to get weird about this – playing next-level tough and hard.

For all of the good things that Michigan does, it’s possible to provide a push if the threes are falling. The Wolverine defense might be fantastic, but Ohio State was able to get hot from the outside in a win a few weeks ago and Michigan State did just enough to get by in a shocker.

Over the last eight games, Michigan is 5-0 when holding teams to under 35% from three and 0-3 when it doesn’t.

UCLA has hit the 35% mark from three in each of its last four games – all in the tournament – and in eight of its last ten.

Why Michigan Will Win

Michigan isn’t going to miss its free throws.

UCLA obliterated Abilene Christian – so the misses from the line didn’t matter – but the Wildcats made just 46% of their free throws. BYU made only 56%, and Alabama was a disaster making just 44%.

Michigan was awful on the line against Florida State – making just 65% – and was miserable from three and yet still one in a 76-58 breeze. On the year, the Wolverines make 78% of their free throws and were hot coming into the FSU game – the missed shots didn’t matter.

The Wolverines are in total command of their game. They’re defending well inside and out, they’re doing a fantastic job on the boards, and they were able to force Florida State to get out of their normal rhythm and force too many bad shots.

UCLA might have cranked up its production, but it’s normally not all that great from three, it’s not that great at guarding the three, and it doesn’t do enough to take the ball away.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

Alabama should’ve been the perfect team to beat UCLA with the way it jacks up lots and lots and lots of threes, but it takes them without always making them.

Michigan doesn’t shoot a whole lot from the outside, but when it does, they usually go in.

Pick against the Pac-12 at your own risk in this tournament, but the Bruins have been able to rise up by making just about everything inside and on the move. They haven’t gone under 40% from the field since early February, and even then that was an aberration for a team that makes 46% of its shots.

The Michigan defense will take care of that.

Florida State hit 40% and it didn’t matter a lick. The Wolverines aren’t going to turn the ball over enough to lead to fast break points – the 14 turnovers by Bama were a killer – and the offense will find a groove inside and out early in the second half on the way to the Final Four.

Houston vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Oregon State Will Win

The Beavers can play some D, too.

Loyola was shutting everyone down – that’s what Loyola did all year long – but Oregon State managed to take its defense to another level in the 65-58 win.

Yeah it was a grind, and yeah it was ugly, but the Beavers held the Ramblers to an even-uglier-than-the-stat 5-of-23 from three and 33% from the field as they maintained relative control throughout with that D.

But the O came through when it had to, too.

It wasn’t a thing of beauty, but Oregon State made 18-of-20 free throws, were just good enough from the field to keep pushing, and there wasn’t any buckling down the late stretch.

The Beavers led the Pac-12 in three point defense, are great at moving the ball around, and they’re on the roll of rolls now winning six straight starting in the most pressure-packed of situations.

The team is finding ways to keep on winning, but …

Why Houston Will Win

You want defense?

46 points, 5-of-23 from three, and just five assists. That’s what Syracuse was able to do against the suffocating Houston D.

Yeah, Oregon State is great at stopping teams form three, but Houston is even better. More than that, it doesn’t have to rely on the three, but it can hit it. It wasn’t on from the outside against the Orange, but a whole slew of rebounds – 11 of the 40 were on the offensive glass – made up for the mistakes.

How many offensive boards did Syracuse get? Five.

The Cougars are flashy, they attack the rim at both ends of the floor, and they can score in bunches, but they’ve also showed off their toughness on the glass as well as on defense.

They got through the gut-check win over Rutgers, they outplayed the Syracuse team with the more heralded defensive style and three point shooters, and they’re used to doing all of the little things right that pay off in the end.

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams can play D, but one does it better.

Houston is No. 1 in the nation in field goal defensive percentage, they hold teams to under 60 points per game, and they’re going to pound this out on the way to the Final Four.

Think Loyola if it could play offense. That’s what Houston is about to bring.

USC vs Oregon Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

The Ducks are back to being themselves.

It’s a very athletic, very fun team that showed the heart and toughness to hold up against Luka Garza and the big Iowa squad in a 95-80 blasting in the second around.

The threes were falling, the team made more than 52% of their shots for the fifth time in seven games, and the offense was wonderful with assist after assist leading to easy points.

Oregon has the offense that USC doesn’t. The Trojans would prefer to play in a shell, rely on their defense, and grind this thing down to a dead stop at times. They can’t hit free throws, and …

2021 NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions

Why USC Will Win

Yeah, that whole no offense thing with USC? Hanging up 85 on Kansas worked just fine.

In general, the Trojans would love to play this in the 60s while maintaining control throughout. There’s a great inside presence, the defense hold just about everyone to under 40%, and even though they don’t make them, they take them – they’re among the best teams in college basketball at getting to the line.

There aren’t a whole lot of wasted possessions, nailing well over half of their shots over the last six games to keep the pressure on teams to push.

It comes down to this – can Oregon hit enough threes to do this? USC is 17-2 when allowing seven or fewer made threes, and that includes ….

What’s Going To Happen

USC 72, Oregon 58. That’s what happened in late February when the Ducks were okay from three, were fine everywhere else, and … they couldn’t seem to stop the Trojans from scoring. Oregon made just seven threes and never got comfortable down by 21 at halftime.

USC won two games against teams that did nothing but jack up threes – UC Riverside and Cal Baptist combined to take 73 threes – but it’s 5-5 against everyone else who made eight or more from the outside, including dropping three to Colorado.

Here’s the flip side to the three thing. Oregon is 15-1 when it makes eight or more threes, and 6-5 when it doesn’t.

Oregon will make eight threes as it draws USC into a bit of an offensive fight.

Alabama vs UCLA Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why UCLA Will Win

If you’re in the Sweet 16 you’re doing something right.

UCLA had to win three games to get here – beating Michigan State, BYU, and getting a monster break with 14-seed Abilene Christian beating Texas – and it’s all working.

The Bruin defense was fantastic against the ACU shooters in the 67-47 win, the team was excellent from the start offensively, and the rebounding has been there.

Alabama shoots a whole lot of threes, but UCLA has been okay against the Pac-12 teams that bomb way, it’s a better shooting team from the outside, and it’s going to roll on the free throw line.

The Tide limited the fouls in the 96-77 win over Maryland, but it’s usually putting teams on the line at least ten times, and UCLA should pounce. The Bruins are a whole lot stronger from the line than they showed against Abilene Christian.

2021 NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions

Why Alabama Will Win

Yeah, UCLA has been able to get here with three wins, but Michigan State, BYU, Abilene Christian … meh.

The Pac-12 has more than proven itself in the tournament with the Bruins playing a huge part of that, but let’s not start preparing to throw another national title on the school’s pile just yet.

Alabama didn’t have any issues against Iona – at least after the first half – and Maryland, it’s on a run of 11 wins in 12 games including the SEC Championship, and it’s playing like a team that’s comfortable in its style.

Attack with the D, shoot threes, rebound the misses – the Tide have ten or more offensive rebounds in the last ten games and in 12 of the last 13 – repeat.

UCLA’s defense has been tough in the tournament, but it’s just okay overall from three and it doesn’t force a whole lot of mistakes.

What’s Going To Happen

Alabama is too solid in too many phases.

The defense is strong enough inside and out to keep UCLA from grinding for points like it’s been doing through the tournament, the offense is too explosive on the outside and stronger at moving the ball around, and the threes will be there in the second half to push on.

Loyola vs Oregon State Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Oregon State Will Win

The Beavers are shooting the lights out over the last few games – and it’s not even just a percentage thing.

They were great from three in the Pac-12 Championship against Colorado and in the first round against Tennessee, but it was more about the timing of their makes in the 80-70 win over Oklahoma State.

The only loss in the last nine games was against Oregon – the Ducks are doing just fine in so far – and even in that they were 52% from the floor.

Even more than that, they’re rebounding tremendously well and playing great D, holding down Oklahoma State star Cade Cunningham and allowing the Cowboys to make just 28% of their shots.

Loyola isn’t going to run anyone out of the gym. It might play a lockdown aggressive style, but Oregon State is just fine with that. It moves the ball around well, it outstanding at getting to the free throw line – it hit 32 of 35 free throws in the last game – and it should with the rebounding battle against the Ramblers.

2021 NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions

Why Loyola Will Win

Illinois did its part to gag away the 71-58 loss to Loyola, but the Rambler defense had a whole lot do with making one of the best teams in college basketball stay in its shell.

Loyola was great at stopping the three, it didn’t have many wasted possessions, and it continued to do what it does by moving the ball around as well as anyone.

The Ramblers were 8th in the nation in assists, and it showed – the Illini defense was never settled or comfortable.

Oregon State has a fouling problem. Start with assuming Loyola will take 15 free throws and go up from there. It’s good enough on the line to matter, the defense should be able to keep the Beavers from going on any big runs, and the consistency will continue.

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State have its moments, but slow and steady might win the race.

Loyola is deadly enough with its suffocating defense that leads the nation allowing under 56 points per game to keep Oregon State cold for long stretches. The Ramblers keep on scoring and keep on finding ways to generate points in a variety of ways.

Give Porter Moser and Loyola a week to prepare, and this team will be ready.

Why Abilene Christian Will Win

The Wildcats never blinked in the 53-52 win over Texas.

They made the free throws for the win. They kept on pressing even with the the Texas offense making 45% of its shots from the field. They lead the nation in turnovers forced and are second in steals, and they forced 23 Texas turnovers.

When in doubt, ACU can rely on its nasty defense that allows teams to score just 60 points and hit 40% per game, and it’s got just enough burst to finish most of those forced mistakes with points.

2021 NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions

Why UCLA Will Win

It’s a lazy cliché to suggest that a team is winning because it’s playing hard, or even worse, wants it more. It’s the NCAA Tournament. Everyone is playing hard. Everyone wants it more, and …

UCLA seemed like it played harder than Michigan State and UCLA, and it certainly seemed like it wanted it more.

Neither of those things are true – the Bruins lost the rebounding battle to BYU and Michigan State was certainly scrapping and fighting – but they’re playing a fearless brand of basketball with the energy to get out on the BYU outside shooters and keep them to 3-of-17 from three. They kept coming even after the Spartans started to look like they were about to take over their First Four game.

Abilene Christian might play a nasty brand of defense, but it turns the ball over a ton, and UCLA doesn’t. It commits a whole lot of fouls, isn’t great on the defensive boards, and the finish of that Texas game aside, it’s not good enough from the free throw line.

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA isn’t turning the ball over 23 times, but that partly means it’s going to play a bit slower and a bit more under control.

Abilene Christian will keep the pressure on from three, and it’ll move the ball around well enough to create a whole slew of open shots. Even though it’s what it does, ACU won’t get all of the mistakes it needs.

And it’s not going to make 10-of-12 free throws again.

The Bruins will have to grind it out, but with Johnny Juzang looking just fine after that ankle injury against Michigan State, and with Jaime Jaquez playing well, the scoring will come when needed to push ahead late in the second half.
