Notre Dame drops in latest Amway Coaches Poll

Notre Dame played up to their ranking but in the latest Amway Coaches Poll they dropped. Find out where the Irish are ranked now.

That was fun last night, wasn’t it? The Irish finally gave the nation no reason to complain about their top 3 ranking, but was it enough for them to stay in that spot?

Well, the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports  showed that it wasn’t. The Irish fell one spot to No. 4, but this shouldn’t come as a surprise. In all honestly, this probably is a week late, but with Ohio State getting a fairly impressive win over Nebraska in their season opener, the Buckeyes jumped the Irish and Georgia.

Around the ACC, Clemson started off slow but ultimately beat Syracuse at home, North Carolina beat up North Carolina State in the only ranked matchup in the conference, while Miami, FL escaped with a win over Virginia. Wake Forest upset Virginia Tech, so movement for some of the ACC teams wasn’t surprising at all.

Here is the updated Amway Coaches Poll, with the ACC members in bold, and their rankings from last week in parentheses.

Notre Dame’s Isaiah Foskey comes up with a key block and scoop and score of a punt against the Pittsburgh Panthers to extend the lead.

Brian Kelly pushed the right buttons late in the first half. He knew the offense probably couldn’t score with just a few ticks left on the clock, so Kelly called a time-out and drew this up.

What an enormous play to end the half for the Irish. The special teams touchdown gives Notre Dame a 28-3 lead over Pittsburgh at the half.

Another day, another doubter for Notre Dame, this time over at Rivals

More shade for Notre Dame, this time from Mike Farrell at Rivals, saying the Irish aren’t contenders for the College Football Playoffs.

The fallout from a very lackluster win against Louisville continues, this time over at Rivals. We looked at Kirk Herbstreit’s comments about the Irish yesterday, and today it’s Mike Farrell’s turn.

In his Three-Point Stance article, he looked at a variety of questions surrounding the college football season right now. One of those was Notre Dame’s validity of making the College Football Playoffs. In short, it’s not good.

The recruiting director doesn’t see the Irish as serious contenders for a CFP spot. “If this Notre Dame team falls behind by a couple of scores, it is done. The Fighting Irish don’t have the offense to come back as the passing game is bad.”

The passing game Farrell is talking about hasn’t obviously been great. The Irish are middle-of-the-pack as far as a scoring offense, putting up 33 points per game.  Even with the blah outing against Louisville, the offense is still gaining 440 yards a game.

Yes, the offense needs work, but putting a fork in Brian Kelly’s group and declaring them done is way too premature. The defense has led the 2020 group, giving the offense an opportunity to catch-up. The whole narrative can change in a week, as we have seen.

This weeks matchup against Pittsburgh has just that much more juice to it. The Irish don’t need anymore locker room material to get fired up, but Farrell provided them with more.

Remember, there are many factors as to why the offense has struggled out of the gate this year. Breaking in a new starter at every offensive skill position wasn’t going to be easy. Tommy Rees’ has to settle in to becoming the guy calling the plays.

It was never going to be a smooth ride offensively for the Irish this year. There was bound to be some bumps along the way, but the schedule gods have given them plenty of time to get it right, but that time is running out.

Including this week, the offense will have two more games to get things right before big, bad Clemson comes to town. Hopefully by November 7th, the Irish offense is humming and can match what the defense has brought so far this season.

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Pitt QB Kenny Pickett was out against Miami, and the offense had its worst output of the season with just 300 yards. The team was still feisty, but it didn’t have the offensive punch needed. Pickett is questionable at best, but even when he’s in, the offense has been miserable on third downs – 13th in the ACC in third down conversions.

Notre Dame might be having its issues, but it’s second in the nation in third down D, allowing teams to convert just 21% of their chances. Overall, there might have been a few problems against the Florida State passing game – which, as it turns out, was just getting rolling – but last week it stuffed Louisville to a dead stop.

However, more than anything else, to beat Pitt you have to somewhat slow down the devastating pass rush. Notre Dame’s offensive line is paving the way for a big year from the running game and is among the best in the nation at keeping everyone out of the backfield.

Why Pitt Will Win

Duke, USF, Florida State, Louisville. That’s Notre Dame’s schedule so far, and to quote Mark Hamill in the Uber Eats ad after being asked to call Patrick Stewart “Sir” … ooooooewwwoooooh.

The Irish haven’t exactly dealt with a killer slate, and they’ve relied on the running game to get by. Ian Book and the passing attack haven’t been totally awful, but they’ve been along for the ride.

Pitt’s run defense has been devastating, allowing over 100 yards per twice in six games with Louisville leading the way with the 116 yards against this group. Helped by the devastating pass rush, the Panthers lead the nation against the run, and that’s leading to big mistakes with 11 takeaways so far.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Notre Dame won’t do the Louisville thing again.

The offense moved the chains last week in the 12-7 win, there weren’t any turnovers, and the running game wasn’t totally awful. However, the passing attack didn’t click, and it was as if the team forgot to score.

Pitt’s defense will keep this from going off the rails, but the Irish lines will be enough to get through this and keep the No. 3 team in the country – ha! – advancing.
