All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Northwestern (1-1) vs Duke (1-1) Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

It’s been a grind, but the Wildcats have to hope they have the running game going again.

They didn’t exactly turn it loose in the 24-6 win over Indiana State, but at least the ground attack was able to work after doing nothing in the loss to Michigan State.

Transfers and injuries gutted the running back corps, but Evan Hull was able to rumble for 126 yards and two touchdowns behind a line that came up with a decent game.

Duke has done absolutely nothing to control the clock. The D can’t get off the field, there’s no pass rush, and the team is the third-worst in the nation in time of possession. Northwestern will happily hang on to the ball for 40 minutes if it can.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Duke Will Win

It’s not that the offense isn’t working. Rolling through North Carolina A&T is no big deal, but it was a good game just to show a little explosion after getting down early.

The Blue Devils could’ve done more in the choke against Charlotte to open the season, but they found their back in Mateo Durant who do some damage against the Northwestern defensive front.

If they can at least stay even in the turnover battle – only two giveaways so far after a horrible time last year hanging on to the ball – and make Northwestern try to press even a little bit offensively, they should be able to control the tempo.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s the big measuring stick moment for both teams and their respective seasons.

Northwestern was gashed by Michigan State, and it didn’t show much against an FCSer last week. However, slow starts are nothing new to the Wildcats in the Pat Fitzgerald era. This week, though, the defense has to pitch a gem.

Duke has more offensive pop, but it hasn’t faced any sort of a defensive challenge yet. Northwestern isn’t going to run well, but the D will be strong, the O will control the clock, and it’ll be about the tempo as the game grinds on.

Northwestern (0-1) vs Indiana State (1-0) Game Preview

Why Indiana State Will Win

The Sycamores were hardly perfect in the 26-21 win over Eastern Illinois, but it got the running game working, the run D was solid, and they went without a big mistake going +3 in turnover margin.

Northwestern might be better than it showed against Michigan State, but the run defense was ripped to shreds – allowing 8.8 yards per carry – and showed how much the missing parts to the backfield matter with no consistent ground attack.

It’s a reeling Wildcat team that isn’t going to come out and blow the doors off of anyone, but …

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Northwestern Will Win

Hunter Johnson was solid.

There were bright spots in the ugly 38-21 loss to the Spartans, and it starts with the quarterback who transferred in from Clemson, didn’t get the gig right away, and managed to maintain his poise last week with no picks, three touchdown passes, and 275 passing yards.

Yes, Indiana State won last week, but it didn’t control the clock and it needed the takeaways to pull it off. As long as the Wildcats go without making a big mistake – they didn’t turn it over against the Spartans – they’ll be fine because …

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Northwestern might have the ball for 40 minutes.

The Pat Fitzgerald brand is all about controlling games, being more physical on the lines, and doing all the little things right, and this is the week to get that back. The Northwestern defense will look like it’s supposed to.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Michigan State (0-0) vs Northwestern (0-0) Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

It’s not going to be the pathetic and sad 2019 version, but there’s a chance the Northwestern offense – which wasn’t exactly Alabama last year – takes a massive step back.

The Wildcats weren’t explosive, but they were ultra-efficient in the way they controlled the tempo and made teams play at their level.

Two big issues that might keep that happening this time around. 1) Hunter Johnson. The former Clemson super-recruit struggled when he got to Northwestern, but now he’s the starter after beating out South Carolina transfer Ryan Hilinski. 2) RB Cam Porter was all set to be the star to work the O around, but he’s out for the year after suffering a leg injury.

Michigan State’s offense is nothing special, but the defense should be a whole lot stronger in Year Two under Mel Tucker. As long as the Spartans don’t give the ball away like Halloween candy – hello, 2020 season opener against Rutgers – they should be able to keep this close.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Northwestern Will Win

Yeah, Northwestern’s offense might be a concern, but Michigan State’s is an unstoppable worry bully.

There should be an improvement on the Spartan O, but only because there’s nowhere to go but up after finishing dead last in the Big Ten in yards and scoring.

The quarterback situation is still up in the air late in the process, the offensive line has to prove it can pound away, and the Northwestern defense is once again going to be a brick wall.

And the Wildcat offense? Johnson at least is experienced enough to know what he’s doing now, and the O line should be able to control the Spartan defensive front.

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

What’s Going To Happen

It’s hard to describe how the Northwestern thing works, but there’s no margin for error whatsoever.

The 2020 Wildcats were terrific, but they lost to Michigan State because they turned it over four times. They came back to make it close late in the 29-20 clunker, but they had to be nearly perfect to win games last year, and they weren’t that in East Lansing.

And they won’t be sharp enough this time around in Evanston.

Michigan State is still a while away from being a factor, but Tucker brought in a ton of good new parts, the offense will be just a bit better, and veteran PK Matt Coghlin – who hit 3-of-4 field goals in last year’s win – is steady enough to hit a game-winner late in a dogfight of a game.

2021 Preseason CFN Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year

RB Mohamed Ibrahim, Sr. Minnesota

There isn’t a ton of flash, and he might not be at the hype level of a star quarterback, but Ibrahim is a tough, steady producer going into his fourth season as one of the nation’s best running backs.

Minnesota didn’t have the passing game of the 2019 team, and there wasn’t the running back rotation of the 2018 version, but Ibrahim still battled with 20 or more carries in every game. He ran the ball over 200 times in the seven game season for 1,076 yards and 15 scores. He’ll once again be a 100-yard machine.

Keeping with the theme of steady-over-sensational for the Big Ten preseason top players …

2021 Preseason CFN Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year

LB Olakunie Fatukasi, Sr. Rutgers

Who’s Olakunie Fatukasi? No, he’s not an elite NFL prospect like some of the other Big Ten defensive talents, and he doesn’t play for Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin or Penn State. Also, Tyshon Fogg might be the longtime main man for the Rutgers defense, but the 6-1, 234-pound senior is a tough all-around defender. All he did was lead the Big Ten in tackles in 2020.

He wasn’t new to the mix. A bit smaller but still tough, he came up with 85 tackles as a junior, but under the new coaching staff he followed it up by doing just about everything with 101 stops with three sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

Minnesota (13-14) vs Northwestern (9-14) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Minnesota Will Win

Minnesota used to be beautiful.

It beat Michigan back in mid-January, it won a thriller over Purdue, and ….

Boom. The team crashed and burned over the last month, losing seven games including a total clunker to Northwestern. The fight is still there at times, but there simply hasn’t been any luck from the outside and the defense has slipped into the abyss.

So what’s the positive? The Gophers are still solid inside, they don’t screw up and turn the ball over all that often, and no team in America has made more free throws.

And Northwestern is bad.

The Wildcats can’t rebound, they don’t get to the free throw line, and …

Why Northwestern Will Win

Minnesota is awful at the moment.

The rebounding has gone bye-bye, the defense from three has been a disaster, and this is one of the nation’s worst shooting teams. The Wildcats were able to beat the Gophers by simply playing decent defense.

Minnesota hit just 4-of-27 from the field in the 67-59 win, and that’s been a theme. The team hasn’t hit 40% from the field in any of the last four games and hasn’t hit double-digit threes since January.

On the flip side, Northwestern has been shooting better, it’s moving the ball around well, and slow and steady might just win the race. Don’t turn the ball over a tone, and the Cats might have this.

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota is too good to keep playing this poorly, but there hasn’t been any signs of life.

The shooting just isn’t good enough, but can Northwestern stay as hot from three as it’s been over the last few games? No, but Minnesota’s defense simply isn’t doing enough.

However, Minnesota will force a few more turnovers, it’ll keep attacking the rim, and it’ll make more free throws in an ugly, ugly win.

Wisconsin (15-8) vs Northwestern (6-13) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Northwestern Will Win

Wisconsin has fallen off the grid.

It has lost five of its last eight and two in a row with the offense struggling and the defense not anywhere near its normal self.

How bad are things? After being a sure thing to hit 40% or better from the field, the Badgers have failed to get there in any of its last three games. If you’re only scoring 62 at home against Iowa, there’s an issue.

Northwestern might have its own issues, but it doesn’t turn the ball over enough to give the struggling Badgers a slew of easy points. But …

Why Wisconsin Will Win

12 straight. That’s the losing streak Northwestern is on after starting 6-1, including a 68-52 loss to Wisconsin back in late January.

It’s not a shooting problem – the Wildcats are able to work the ball around well and get the right shots – but there isn’t enough happening from three and there aren’t nearly enough rebounds at either end.

The Badgers are more than happy to play a low-scoring battle with possessions at a premium. They’re not going to panic when the game is close, they’ll get the boards the Cats won’t, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Finally, the Badgers will look okay.

Northwestern will still be plucky, and Wisconsin will never feel comfortable, but the away side will win the rebounding margin by at least five and will make at least four more free throws.

Illinois (14-5) vs Northwestern (6-12) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Northwestern Will Win

The Cats have to hope that Illinois is deep into the dog days of the finishing kick and stays a bit off.

Illinois got pushed way too hard by Nebraska.

The Huskers have been struggling all year, but they were able to stay alive in the loss on Friday by doing a great job on the boards and by getting to the free throw line.

Northwestern has to somehow get to the line more. It doesn’t do a ton on the glass and it doesn’t draw nearly enough fouls, but it’s okay on the line and it comes up with enough threes to put the pressure on.

Illinois isn’t all that great at defending the three, but …

Why Illinois Will Win

There wasn’t a problem in the 81-56 win over the Wildcats back in early January.

The Illini were great from the field, Northwestern couldn’t hit anything, and it got really, really ugly on the boards.

Northwestern doesn’t rebound, it doesn’t force mistakes, and even though it can hit from the outside, it doesn’t do enough on the inside.

What’s Going To Happen

Illinois will overcome a sluggish first half by rebounding everything in the second, coming up with plenty of easy points, and by hitting enough on the inside to keep pulling ahead as the game goes on.
