Receiver prospects who can raise their stock at the scouting combine

Touchdown Wire’s Laurie Fitzpatrick goes to the film to examine receivers who may raise their stock at the 2022 NFL scouting combine

As the 2022 NFL Draft approaches, we already have an idea of who the first-round wide receivers are, but there are some prospects who, even though they have great measurables, might not be as high on the boards as they’d like

What makes the difference between a guy with the same measurables better than another? Usually, it’s because of what they’ve shown on their tape. It’s true that the tape doesn’t lie, but it also doesn’t paint the full picture of a prospect.

Some receivers who play at the bigger schools could be overshadowed by other players, therefore limiting their reps. Other times. guys just aren’t in the right scheme or position. It’s impossible for a prospect to show what he could be capable of at the next level if those situations arise. One place where teams usually find hidden gem is at the scouting combine.

It happens every single year. Some guys who are twentieth on the board, show up to Indianapolis and raise their stock to top fifteen or even top ten.

Let’s check out a few receivers who have that opportunity.

New Lions OC Ben Johnson breaks down what the team wants in a wide receiver this offseason

Johnson spoke with the local media at the 2022 NFL scouting combine and offered up what he wants at wide receiver

New Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson spoke with a select group of reporters at the 2022 NFL scouting combine on Tuesday afternoon. Johnson amicably covered several topics, but one area of emphasis stood out. He’s ready to tackle fixing the wide receiver position.

Detroit has a keeper in Amon-Ra St. Brown, who finished his rookie season as one of the best over-the-middle weapons in the entire league. But the rest of the receiving corps is thin, to be kind. Kalif Raymond, Josh Reynolds and KhaDarel Hodge— the next three top targets for WRs in 2021 — are free agents, while Quintez Cephus is returning from a broken shoulder. Adding help at receiver is a definite priority, and Johnson has some ideas on where the help can come.

When asked about what type of receiver the Lions might prefer this offseason, the freshly promoted Johnson broke it down.

“They come in a number of shapes and forms,” Johnson said. “But I think the definition of it is a guy who can win consistently one-on-one.”

Johnson continued,

“Whether that’s a big guy with a lot of strength and size, a guy with elite quickness or speed — it comes in a number of different ways. But we are looking for someone that, outside the numbers predominately, can win a one-on-one. And if he’s good at his job, dictates coverage. So they recognize where he’s at at all times and they start rolling his way, which will open us up for the run game and inside.”

The new coach summed it up nicely,

“We have guys that can win. We just want to see the guys that we have, or get somebody else, that can win on a more regular basis.”

In another answer, Johnson talked about the need to expand the field with receiving talent.

“The more we can expand both vertically and horizontally outside the numbers and deep down the field, the more it’s going to make the guys on the inside that much more dangerous,” Johnson said, referring to TE T.J. Hockenson and RBs D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams.

No specific college prospects or potential free agents were discussed, but Johnson’s eyes lit up when he talked about adding a bigger receiver and what that can do to help the Lions’ anemic red zone offense.

Howie Roseman on the Eagles’ offseason, NFL draft, not wasting resources

Howie #Roseman spoke to Dave #Spadaro about the #Philadelphia #Eagles offseason, #NFLDraft2022, and most importantly, not wasting vital resources

The NFL never sleeps and just weeks after the Rams were victorious in the Super Bowl, all eyes are on the scouting combine, free agency, and April’s draft.

Philadelphia will have three first-round picks in April’s draft, cap space to be players in free agency while keeping an eye on that one key acquisition that can catapult the Birds right back into the playoffs.

Eagles’ Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman recently sat down with Dave Spadaro to discuss the current roster, the salary cap, the draft, free agency, and more ahead of the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine.

10 takeaways from Bears GM Ryan Poles at NFL Scouting Combine

At the NFL Combine, Bears GM Ryan Poles discussed building depth, finding playmakers for Justin Fields and revamping the O-line.

The NFL Scouting Combine is underway as some of the nation’s top prospects descend upon Indianapolis with the chance to impress some prospective teams ahead of the 2022 NFL draft.

They’ll be under the watchful eyes of general managers, head coaches and scouts alike, including Bears GM Ryan Poles, who will be looking to do his best with just five draft selections this year.

Poles met with the media on Tuesday morning, where he fielded questions about the upcoming offseason. He did his best to answer the questions he could while making it clear from the start there were some he couldn’t answer, for obvious reasons. But there was plenty to digest from his media session.

From building depth on the roster to finding playmakers for Justin Fields, here’s what we learned from Poles during his Tuesday press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine:

Bears’ Ryan Poles, Matt Eberflus set to speak at NFL Scouting Combine

Bears GM Ryan Poles and HC Matt Eberflus will speak with the media Tuesday ahead of the NFL Scouting Combine.

The 2022 NFL Scouting Combine is about to get underway, where draft prospects will be looking to make a strong impression on prospective teams ahead of the NFL draft.

Before the action gets underway, things will kick off with general manager and head coach interviews.

New Bears GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus will both meet with the media on Tuesday. Poles is scheduled to be at the podium at 11 a.m. CT, while Eberflus will speak at 1 p.m. CT.

This will mark the first time that Poles and Eberflus will meet with the media since their introductory press conference. Only now, they’ve been in their current roles for over a month.

There will likely be questions directed at them about pending free agents, roster holes and potential offseason moves. While Poles and Eberflus are new on the job, don’t expect them to give things away at this point.

The Bears have just five draft selections this year after trading up to acquire quarterback Justin Fields in the first round last year. But they’re slated to have around $25 million in salary cap space, which is the 12th most in the NFL. And that’s before any potential offseason transactions to clear more.

2022 NFL Scouting Combine: Wide receivers the Bears should be watching

Wide receiver is a big need for the Bears this offseason. Here are 10 wideouts they should keep an eye on at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The NFL draft season is officially upon us, and it’s set to kick off with the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday.

The Bears have a plethora of needs and currently just five draft selections to work with, which doesn’t give new general manager Ryan Poles a lot of wiggle room.

But one of Chicago’s biggest needs is wide receiver, as Darnell Mooney is the only wideout currently on the roster that’s guaranteed a roster spot at this point. The Bears need to surround quarterback Justin Fields with plenty of weapons — in free agency and the NFL draft — and there are some intriguing prospects coming out of the draft.

Here’s a look at 10 wide receivers the Bears should be watching at the NFL Combine this week:
