Los Angeles Clippers at Brooklyn Nets odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Los Angeles Clippers at Brooklyn Nets NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Brooklyn Nets (13-9) host the Los Angeles Clippers (16-5) Tuesday at Barclays Center for a 7:30 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we analyze the Clippers-Nets NBA odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The only disturbance the Clippers have dealt with recently was when their dynamic duo of SF Kawhi Leonard and SG Paul George missed two games. Los Angeles actually split those games (losing at the Atlanta Hawks 108-99 Jan. 26 and winning at the Miami Heat 109-105 Jan. 28). That was the Clippers’ only loss in their last 11 games.

Brooklyn lost a stunner 149-146 Sunday to the Washington Wizards after blowing a 5-point lead with under 10 seconds remaining by allowing both Wizards PG Russell Westbrook and SG Bradley Beal to sink threes.

The story of Brooklyn’s new era continues to be its ability to get buckets and inability to stop anyone. Since SG James Harden joined the Nets Jan. 14, Brooklyn is outscoring opponents 123.7 to 124.6, both of which are the most in the NBA over the last nine games.

Clippers at Nets: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Clippers 121, Nets 118

Money line (ML)

The CLIPPERS (-120) are flying way under the radar compared to last season for several reasons. They shouldn’t be overlooked, as they’ve had an extra season’s worth of continuity with one of the few rosters nearly as talented as Brooklyn’s.

Over the past nine games, Los Angeles quietly has the best net rating in the league and this includes a red-hot Utah Jazz team that just had an 11-game winning streak snapped and the Nets, who are setting the world on fire with their offense.

Leonard has shot better than Nets SF Kevin Durant in their head-to-head history and his teams have a 7-6 record. Harden commits 4.6 turnovers per game and shoots 38.7% from the field and 31.4% on threes in his 20 career games vs. George, and PG’s teams are 14-6 vs. Harden’s.

I’d feel a little better about Los Angeles if Beverley was active so he could pester Nets PG Kyrie Irving on the defensive end but I’ll still TAKE CLIPPERS (-120).

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS. Don’t be cheap, just pay the extra vig so you don’t have to fuss with the spread.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Nets have been as exciting as everyone hoped and eight of their nine games since Jan. 16 have gone Over the projected total.

Los Angeles can fill it up almost as well as Brooklyn and the Clippers are third in offensive rating behind only the Jazz and Nets in the last nine games.

While everything points to this being an awesome game, full of great offense, it’s just too big of a number for a primetime game. Also, we’ve seen too many NBA games turn into routs and the Over is in peril should a team have the game secured midway through the fourth quarter.

lean UNDER 241.5 (-110) for a tiny wager.

Bradley Beal reportedly doesn’t want to be traded and his reason why is a pretty good point

Beal is right where he wants to be. For now.

The Washington Wizards are one of the worst teams in the NBA with a 4-12 record despite having the league’s leading scorer by far in Bradley Beal.

So, naturally, most people in and around the league are expecting Beal to demand a trade at some point to make his way to a contender and finally compete for a championship.

But, apparently, that isn’t happening anytime soon.

Beal doesn’t want to be traded from Washington, according to reporting from The Athletic’s Shams Charania. He’s not happy with the way the season is going in Washington, but he also not indicated that he wants to be moved. And the Wizards have no interest in moving him, according to the report.

It doesn’t stop there, though. Beal is also apparently “frustrated and confused” by everyone saying he should demand a trade.

“He is privately frustrated and confused with the perpetual portrayal of his situation, according to sources familiar with his thinking. After seeing other players take criticism for requesting to leave teams, those sources say Beal feels he’s getting nitpicked for choosing to stay in D.C., where he began his NBA career in 2012. He felt similarly when he signed an extension in October 2019. Speculation about his future has swirled since before then.”

He sees how people reacted to both Anthony Davis forcing his way out of New Orleans and James Harden forcing his way out of Houston to get to better situations. And he could easily take that same route here. But, of course, he’d be criticized for it.

Or, he could simply stay in Washington and keep trying to win and turn that situation around which, of course, he’s currently being criticized for. Either way, he’s going to take heat. So if this is the way he wants to go about doing things, who are we to tell him he should do otherwise?

It’s fair to say that the Wizards might be in better shape if they move him. They’d probably come away with a haul that helps them build a new foundation for the future. And no one could blame Beal if he just wanted to get out of his current situation. It’s bad. Really bad. Things could certainly change here. The situation is fluid.

But there’s nothing wrong with playing things the way he’s playing them. Especially when there’s a potential supermax contract coming for him down the road in a few years.

Mic’d-up video shows exactly what was said in LeBron James’ exchange with heckling Hawks fan

Whoa.

I’ll get this out of the way in the very first sentence because this video has a ton of strong language. So, I’d recommend headphones unless you want to blast a lot of cursing through your speakers.

Monday night’s game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena was briefly paused when a fan seated courtside started getting into it with LeBron James. The referees and arena staff had to step in, and eventually both fans — a husband and wife — were escorted out of the arena.

The woman involved in the exchange took to Instagram and claimed she was standing up for her husband. LeBron tweeted after the game, calling her “Courtside Karen.”

But what was said exactly?

Well, thanks to a much-needed breakdown from Jomboy Media, we can hear what the enhanced microphones picked up from the whole scene. (Warning: NSFW language)

Woo buddy. That was a lot.

Of course, none of this would have happened if the Hawks had opted to not sell courtside seats during a pandemic. But even after all that, LeBron still didn’t think the fans deserved to be ejected.

Raptors at Magic: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Raptors 120, Magic 108

Money line (ML)

The Raptors (-250) should make it two straight wins against the injury-ravaged Magic with a win Tuesday, but we can’t justify the chalky price for a team that has won two or more games in a row just twice this season. There’s also just no reason to chase the upset by a Magic squad with three straight L’s, all by 10-plus points.

PASS on the money line in favor of the more profitable spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

The RAPTORS -6.5 (-110) easily disposed of the Magic Sunday and should again while making the short trip to Orlando for the second half of the home-and-home set.

Toronto shot just 30.8% from 3-point range in the 13-point win, so there’s plenty of room for improvement if the Raps get back to their season average.

The Raptors won the rebound battle with C Aron Baynes grabbing 16 boards. PF Pascal Siakam had a game-high 30 points in one of his best outings of the 2020-21 season.

The Toronto bigs will have an easier time Tuesday with Gordon now on the sidelines, as well. The Raps bench had one of its best games of the season and should continue to have an edge against the short-handed Magic.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 214.5 (-110) and expect some better 3-point shooting from Toronto. Sunday’s game squeaked past a projected total of 216 points by a single point.

Progression toward a season average of 37.5% shooting from beyond the arc for the Raptors should allow the Over to connect with relative ease Tuesday.

Pistons at Jazz: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Jazz 123, Pistons 101

Money line (ML)

The Pistons traveled to Salt Lake City after having Monday’s game in Denver postponed due to COVID-19 concerns and contact tracing on the Detroit roster. They re-tested players and it looks like Tuesday’s game will be played as scheduled, but stay tuned throughout the day.

As far as wagers, the red-hot Jazz (-750) should rough up the Pistons, but you can’t risk seven and a half times your potential return. It’s amateur hour, and just not good long-term wagering strategy.

AVOID, and look to the spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

The JAZZ -12.5 (-115) have a heavy number, but they have been taking down all comers lately. They were cooled off with a 128-117 loss in Denver Sunday, but they won their previous 11, and have gone 11-1 ATS during the span, too. They’ll restart a new streak.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 218.5 (-115) is a decent small-unit play, but you might be waiting deep into the fourth quarter before you hit the finish line. Utah ranks ninth in the NBA with 113.6 PPG, and Detroit allows 112.7 PPG, so the Jazz are gonna get theirs.

The concern is the Pistons, and if they’ll be able to solve the defense of the Jazz. The good news is this should be a blowout, so garbage time equals a lot of points.

Memphis Grizzlies at Indiana Pacers odds, picks and prediction

The Memphis Grizzlies (9-6) travel to meet the Indiana Pacers (11-9) at Bankers Life Fieldhouse for an 8 p.m. ET tip-off Tuesday. Below, we analyze the Grizzlies-Pacers NBA odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Grizzlies at Pacers: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Grizzlies 114, Pacers 112

Money line (ML)

The GRIZZLIES (+195) have dealt with COVID-19 issues, but they have steamed along with seven straight victories and covers. The good times will come to an end eventually, but keep betting on Memphis until it starts to cool off.

The Grizz are a tremendous value in this one, as Gorgui Dieng, Tyus Jones and De’Anthony Melton have really stepped up their play with others absent, and the Grizz have been a different team since Morant returned to the lineup. The latter rolled his ankle Monday but is expected to be fine.

Against the spread (ATS)

The GRIZZLIES +6.5 (-115) are a good play catching three buckets from the Pacers. Memphis has won and covered seven in a row, and Indiana limps in with back-to-back losses while going 3-5 straight up and 2-6 ATS across its past eight games.

Back the hotter team. It’s that simple.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 220.5 (-110) is worth a small-unit play. The Over cashed in each of the past four for Memphis against winning teams and the Over is 5-1 in Indiana’s past six at home.

The Over is also 5-2-1 in the previous eight overall for the Pacers.

One fan ejected for heckling LeBron James has posted about sitting courtside near him before

Its on Instagram.

One of the fans ejected for heckling LeBron James in the Los Angeles Lakers’ win over the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena was identified as Chris Carlos, whose wife Juliana Carlos posted videos telling her side of what happened.

James didn’t think the fans should have been ejected, telling reporters, “There was a back and forth between two grown men, and we said our piece, he said his piece, I said my piece. And then someone else jumped into it and said their piece, but I didn’t think they should have been kicked out.”

Chris Carlos has actually sat courtside to root against James before — some 2017 posts from his Instagram account were found in which he said in a caption, “Can u tell I don’t like this guy.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BStfryigDgq/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading

I guess we can tell nearly four years later that he doesn’t like this guy.

LeBron doesn’t think the fans who heckled him should have been ejected

“I didn’t think they should have been kicked out.”

Some heckling fans who had words for LeBron James during the Los Angeles Lakers’ 107-99 win over the Atlanta Hawks were removed from State Farm Arena on Monday night.

Our Andy Nesbitt thinks those fans should be banned from ever attending an NBA game again after they pulled their masks down so close to James and the players on the floor.

But when it comes to ejecting them due to what they might have said? James himself said he doesn’t think they should have been tossed out.

“At the end of the day, I’m happy fans are back in the building,” he told reporters after the game. “I miss that interaction. I need that interaction. We as players need that interaction.”

“I don’t feel like that … warranted [for them] to be kicked out,” he continued. “There was a back and forth between two grown men, and we said our piece, he said his piece, I said my piece. And then someone else jumped into it and said their piece, but I didn’t think they should have been kicked out.”

As for them taking down their masks? He didn’t think they were close enough to affect the players but he hoped the officials who were are OK.

“Safety first,” he said.

Of course, James had more to say on Twitter:

What was the deal on Hawks fans being allowed inside the arena? The Athletic has the details after speaking with CEO Steve Koonin:

All fans inside State Farm Arena are required to wear masks during the game, but Juliana Carlos is seen on video pulling hers down and yelling in the direction of James and other players on the court. Koonin said all of the fans who are sitting courtside are 30 feet from play, receive a rapid COVID-19 test and must test negative before being allowed inside the building. …

Atlanta is one of 10 teams that currently allows fans inside its arena, with 10 percent capacity being the limit inside State Farm Arena (roughly 1,700 fans). After Monday’s incident, Koonin said the team’s stance on allowing fans to sit courtside will not be impacted.

Bradley Beal trade talk and futures of Scott Brooks and Wizards management with Fred Katz and Michael Scotto

The latest trade talk surrounding Bradley Beal, his commitment to the Wizards, and futures of coach Scott Brooks and management.

Michael Scotto is joined by Wizards beat writer Fred Katz of The Athletic on the latest episode of the HoopsHype podcast. The duo discusses Bradley Beal’s commitment to the Wizards, poor body language recently, Beal’s trade value around the NBA, and the futures of coach Scott Brooks and Wizards management long-term. Listen to the podcast above or check out some snippets of the conversation in a transcribed version below.

1:40 Bradley Beal’s body language against the Nets during the first half and what NBA executives and scouts were saying

Scotto: I texted with a couple of executives and scouts. One executive in the East told me, “Damn, that’s unbelievable. Red flags everywhere.” Another scout, who’s been in the league for over a decade at this point, texted me, “He looks like he’s done with them.” That was in the first half.

Katz: Ever since I’ve been covering the Wizards, which is two and a half years, the narrative around Beal has been when is he no longer going to be a Wizard?

A couple of times a year, the Wizards will end up on the NBA TV game, and Beal’s body language will be weird because that’s just what he looks like a lot of the time. He slouches, hands at the sides. Him not running back on defense has been a thing for a couple of years now. It’s just kind of part of his game.

Scotto: You mentioned that the Wizards aren’t necessarily looking to move him. I’ve gotten that same sentiment as well. Coming into the year, they thought with re-signing Davis Bertans, trading for Russell Westbrook and reuniting him with Brooks and hoping he can recapture that MVP form or at least an All-Star level player, pair him with Beal, they thought they were a playoff team in the East and as high as six in the conference according to some people I spoke to in the organization going into the season. That was their hope. It hasn’t turned out like that. Thomas Bryant also got hurt.

6:50 What’s the vibe around the Wizards?

Katz: They’re frustrated without question. To be clear, when I talk about Beal’s body language, it has moments where you’re like, ‘Whoa. What the hell is going on?’ I’m not implying that the first quarter when he took zero shots was just the norm every single day. But he goes in and out. My impression is I’ve had this conversation so many times in two and a half years where every six months somebody says to me, ‘I saw his body language. He looked frustrated. He was sitting on the side of the court, he had a towel over his head, and he looked so down. He looked fed up. He must want out.’

Brad hasn’t said he wants out. The team doesn’t want to trade him. At this point, that’s been the case for long enough that I’m just going to continue to believe that until I explicitly hear hints of otherwise. And this isn’t just from conversations with people close to Beal. These are conversations with people from other teams who call up the Wizards. The league sees what’s happening here. The Wizards are 4-12. Beal’s a free agent in the summer of 2022. The league sees him as the next guy to get traded after James Harden.

I don’t necessarily agree with the Harden comparison. Harden demanded a trade, wanted out, and the Rockets weren’t doing it. That was Harden’s way of saying, ‘Ok. I don’t want to be here. Do something about it right now.’ That’s not the case with Beal. If it is the case with Beal and he does want out, he hasn’t made it clear to the team that he does.

11:53 So if Beal wants a trade or the Wizards explore a trade, what’s his value?

Scotto: One exec said, ‘A whole bunch of picks, and I think they could try to have another team take a bad contract with him as well. I think it’d be somewhere between the Jrue Holiday and Harden trades. Harden was an MVP scoring champ in terms of talent. He (Beal) is in between both of them.’

Another exec said, ‘If you look at the last couple of trades, depending on the players going back, I’d imagine two or three first-round picks and potentially pick swaps as well.’

14:00 Beal’s long-term future in Washington

Katz: I think it’s important to remember that when we talk about the organization’s interest in holding onto him, it’s not that they’re interested in holding into him for the next year and a half, it’s their interest in holding onto him beyond the next year and a half. They wouldn’t be handling it this way if they didn’t feel like they had a really legitimate chance to re-sign him during his 2022 free agency.

Something that’s important to the context of all of this is that Beal is kind of like a Damian Lillard kind of guy. Lillard believes there’s inherent value in being able to stay with one franchise, and Beal is a similar guy. I know he loves that Dirk (Nowitzki) title in 2011.

I don’t think Beal wants to lose for the rest of his career. I just think all things being equal, he’d rather win in Washington than win elsewhere. While the entire rest of the world has made up their mind that he’s not going to win in Washington, I don’t think Beal has.

17:30 What would the Wizards want for Beal?

Scotto: There was a period where internally the Nets discussed, and obviously this was before the Harden trade, what would it be if they tried to package Caris LeVert and Jarrett Allen and somewhat similar to the trade that they did for Harden? I’m not sure about all of those pick swaps for Beal. Let’s be clear on that, but that type of package centered around a guy like LeVert, who at the time was in the conversation that he could be an All-Star at some point. Allen is a center that’s valued around the league and a guy that’s on the upswing for sure. They had plenty of first-round picks, as you saw given in the Harden trade. From Washington’s standpoint, I touched on it with a few of them theoretically behind the scenes if that would have interest, and I didn’t get the vibe that it would.

To your point, if that type of trade package scenario didn’t float their boat for a guy like Beal at the time, and he’s only gotten better since then. This is a guy averaging 35 points a game and is definitely going to be an All-Star this year. If that wasn’t enough then, what’s the package going to be now? It’s going to have to be more than that.

Katz: The Wizards have been an organization that has historically prioritized making the playoff above breaking it down. Ted Leonsis is the owner who famously said, ‘I will never ever tank.’

If you arrive at a situation where you’re going to trade Beal, let’s hear out New Orleans. They have young players and tons of picks. Let’s hear out Golden State. They have James Wiseman. They have the Minnesota pick. Let’s hear out Denver, who has Michael Porter Jr. Atlanta has a lot of young players and some picks. Let’s hear out these teams. The Knicks have a lot of picks. Or, you could say, ‘Let’s see if we can get Ben Simmons?’

25:18 Who’s getting the blame in Washington if this season continues the way it has? Brooks or the Wizards front office?

Katz: I don’t think that you can say that any coach that’s in the last year of his deal, hasn’t gotten an extension, and whose team has the worst winning percentage in the NBA right now is completely safe. In terms of being out in the middle of the year, Brooks makes $7 million this year. Leonsis, the Wizards owner, just furloughed 40 percent of his company’s employees a few months ago. So, I don’t know what the desire would be to pay someone $7 million or the remainder of the contract not to work for him. I can’t imagine he’d be that enthusiastic about that. I think this is an organization that thinks about optics and that kind of stuff. I don’t think the optics are there to pay somebody that much when you just furloughed that many people not to work for you in the middle of an economic crisis in the middle of a pandemic.

Scotto: If they go a different direction, one guy I’m sure you can bank on hearing his name out there in some form is Masai Ujiri. Whether it’s for leverage or not, when it comes to executive openings, his name always seems to find its way out there — and for a good reason after building the Toronto Raptors.
