Lakers, Mavericks have had fewest back-to-back games since 2000

When the NBA schedules are announced, one of the most interesting places to look is at how many games are scheduled on back-to-back days.

When the NBA schedules are announced, one of the most interesting places to look is at how many games happen on back-to-back days.

It’s a dreaded experience for most players and a prime option to rest a star to try and avoid the wear-and-tear of the long season.

While the load management crisis has since become one of the hottest topics in basketball circles, this is also a conversation about injury recovery. Playing one full game can be grueling but suiting up for a second while still suffering from an injury can potentially exacerbate the initial problem.

For example, reigning NBA Finals MVP recipient Kawhi Leonard has been unable to play in the second game of back-to-backs for the Clippers due to his nagging knee issues.

There is also an obvious disadvantage for a team playing on zero days rest. While these are inevitable in the schedule. we looked at the franchises that have had the biggest assists from decision-makers. Teams listed in green are in the Western Conference while the red represents the Eastern Conference.

One takeaway is that the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers have been blessed with the fewest back-to-back games on their schedules since 2000-01.

The Atlanta Hawks, however, have not been as lucky since the turn of the century. They are the only team that has averaged more than 20 back-to-back games on their schedule per season since 2000, per our research.

This season, the Hawks have a league-high 14 games with zero days rest on their schedule. For what it’s worth, the Hawks have already played seven of those games on the second night of a back-to-back and have lost all of them.

For perspective, that is still quite a bit less than when the league average NBA team had as many as 20.4 back-to-back games on their schedule in 2011-12 as officials tried to make up for time lost during the lockout season.

But as Tim Reynolds explained, it has been a top priority for the league to remove this trend for the safety of players (via AP):

“Players might be getting a touch more rest this season as well. For the fifth straight year, the NBA has found a way to lower the average number of times a team has to play on consecutive days. The league average is 12.4 back-to-backs this season, down from 13.3 last year and 36 percent down from the average of 19.3 five years ago.”

It is worth crediting the league for their push in recent years to avoid back-to-back games in their scheduling. The players are overwhelmingly against their existence and as such, the product may suffer on the court.

Prediction

Lakers 115, Pistons 105

Moneyline (ML)

The Lakers (-1667) are monster moneyline favorites in this contest, but there isn’t even close to enough value to bet them for the outright win. The Pistons (+850) offer an 8.5-1 return, but considering their injuries, it’s best to PASS.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Lakers to win outright returns a profit of just $0.06.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Lakers (-14.5, -115) are 14.5 point favorites over the PISTONS (+14.5, -106) Sunday night, but that seems like far too many points. The Lakers have covered the spread in just two of their last 10 games as they tend to allow bad teams to hang around for too long. Take the Pistons to cover the spread and hope they can keep it close into the fourth quarter.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total for this matchup is set at 217.5 points, which seems low considering how dominant the Lakers offense has been this season. With this game being in Los Angeles, expect the Lakers to score well over 110 points, which should cover the total. Take the OVER 217.5 (-128).

Prediction

Clippers 114, Knicks 97

Moneyline (ML)

The Clippers (-385) should win this game handily since they have the second-best record straight up (9-3), and the best record against the spread (8-4) and margin of victory (+10.6) versus non-conference opponents. Both teams have been inconsistent as of late, each going 5-5 in their last 10 games, although inconsistent is an improvement for the Knicks (+300). Between the on-paper mismatch, the Clippers’ strong 15-4 home record and the lack of value for the Clippers to win straight up, I am staying away from any moneyline wager.

PASS.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

It’ll be tough for the Knicks (+7.5, -106) to get hustle buckets for several reasons. First, the Clippers are ranked ninth in opponent points in the paint, while the Knicks are 28th in points in the paint. Second, the Knicks are just 29th in fast-break points so they won’t be able to exploit the Clippers’ weak defense against opponent fast-break points (ranked 26th). Third, one of the strengths of the Knicks is scoring second-chance points (ranked fourth) but the Clippers allow the sixth-fewest second-chance points in the NBA.

Bet CLIPPERS (-7.5, -115). The Clippers are on a back-to-back, but they got boat raced by the Memphis Grizzlies 140-114 Saturday and are going to take it out on the Knicks.

Over/Under (O/U)

As discussed above, don’t count on the Knicks to create much offense against the Clippers. The Grizzlies hit 18 of 39 3-pointers last night but again, that was an NBA regular-season anomaly the Knicks won’t duplicate. The Clippers defense is ranked No. 4 in opponent 3-point percentage and the Knicks are ranked 29th. Furthermore, the combined Over/Under records of the two teams is 32-40 and this could be a Sunday snoozer with the Clippers motivated to defend.

LEAN, not likeUNDER 222.5 (-115) because of the current injury report. If Beverley plays, the Clippers defense is more stout. If George and/or Leonard plays, their offense should be more productive.

Timberwolves at Cavaliers: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 10:40 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Cavaliers 110, Timberwolves 106

Moneyline (ML)

The Timberwolves (-143) are coming off a 99-84 home win over the Golden State Warriors Thursday and they’re 3-2 in five games since snapping an 11-game losing streak. They’re 8-10 on the road and 7-5 against the Eastern Conference this season. The CAVALIERS (+120) are a good value play as a home underdog – they won 94-88 at the T-Wolves Dec. 28.

Cleveland has lost three games since that win, including a 121-106 defeat at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder Saturday, as they enter on the second half of a back-to-back. The Cavs are just 6-12 at home this season, but they’re the healthier of the two teams and shouldn’t be underdogs so close to a head-to-head victory. Take the value.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Cavs to win returns a profit of $12 if they do.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Stick with the ML rather than playing Cleveland to cover a spread of +1.5 (+105). The one point of insurance in the event of a loss results in $1.50 of lost profit if the Cavaliers win outright.

Minnesota is 14-18 against the spread overall but 10-7 on the road. Cleveland is 14-20 overall and 7-10 at home. Don’t fall for the Wolves’ recent “strong” stretch with Towns, Wiggins and Teague all at less than full health. The Cavs are 3-2 ATS on the second half of back-to-backs, while the Timberwolves are 0-6-1 ATS with a rest advantage.

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the OVER 213.5 (-115). Both teams are depleted on the defensive end and the Cavs’ back-to-back situation will result in a weaker defensive performance than usual. The two teams combine to allow an average of 228.0 points per game. While they fell well short of that number a week ago, it’s safe to expect some correction with Sunday’s projected total set in the middle.

Draymond Green mocks referee, gets ejected

Draymond Green picked up two technicals in the span of a few seconds and was tossed from the game.

Draymond Green has racked up double-digit technical fouls in each of the last five NBA seasons, and he’s got a decent chance to set a new career high in 2020. On Saturday night at home against the Pistons in a close game, Green got himself ejected by picking up two technicals in quick succession by openly mocking a referee’s ‘T’ signal on the court.

Green was called for a reach-in foul and was unhappy with the whistle, so he argued and picked up his first technical.

In response, Green mocked the referee’s technical call, and was promptly thrown from the game.

The Warriors went on to lose, 111-104, to drop to 9-28 on the season.

Kevin Love loses it mid-game on Collin Sexton, sure seems done with Cleveland

Kevin Love showed up Collin Sexton, and seems like he’s fed up with the situation in Cleveland.

There have been rumors swirling for weeks that Kevin Love is on his way out of Cleveland, and he sure looked like someone who was ready to leave on Saturday night, when frustrations clearly ran over for Love.

At the end of the first half of the Cavaliers’ game against the Thunder, there were 14 seconds remaining on the shot clock and 22 seconds remaining on the game clock.

The Cavaliers had a decent reason to run the clock down a bit before getting their offense going, so as not to force up too quick a shot and give the Thunder more chance on the final possession of the half.

Cavaliers rookie Collin Sexton did more than run the clock down a bit, though. He just sort of stood near half court, dribbling and dribbling. Love, who was being guarded by the much-shorter-than-him Chris Paul, got completely fed up. He called for the ball in the post, was ignored by Sexton … so Love kept walking toward the young guard.

Love then demanded Sexton toss him the ball. Sexton gave it to him, and Love fired a furious two-handed pass to Cedi Osman, who couldn’t make much happen and hurled up a long 3 … and actually got bailed out by a foul call.

Still, watch Love:

This is tough. Sexton will argue that he was trying to run the clock down to get a final look. Still, his lack of awareness is rough here: Love has a much shorter player guarding him in the post. That has to be the look.

Sexton didn’t give it a look. Sexton made his mind up, until Love came out and showed him up. No matter who’s at fault, it seems that Love’s time in Cleveland is running short.

Kyrie Irving might need to have shoulder surgery

The Nets guard took a cortisone shot to put surgery off.

Kyrie Irving’s stint with the Brooklyn Nets is off to a terrible start. He hasn’t played basketball for them since November 14 and has missed 23 straight games due to a shoulder impingement.

Irving wasn’t expected to be out for this long, but it turns out his injury is worse than originally anticipated. The Nets guard says he’s doing “a lot better” than he was, but he’s still unable to lift his shoulder when taking jump shots.

The Nets’ point guard isn’t ruling out surgery at some point down the line, but he’s been putting it off so far by taking cortisone shots.

“I am in a better place now that it has been a significant amount of time. The next step in any progression was to either get a cortisone shot or to get surgery. That was the ultimatum I was fixed with. Now, I’m just doing the best I can to live off this cortisone and move forward if I need surgery in the future.”

Irving should take his time getting back. The Nets are currently 7th in the Eastern Conference and are in position to make the playoffs and there’s plenty of time between now and the end of the season.

Surgery seems like a viable option and it’s something Irving has clearly thought hard about. It wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for him to just have the surgery and shut things down for a while.

The Nets are fine — they’ve gone 12-10 since Irving went down with his shoulder injury and have managed to stay afloat. Spencer Dinwiddie also looks like he could be an All-Star this season. What they don’t need is a less-than-100% Irving coming back and jacking up shots — they’re 4-7 with him in the lineup this year.

If Irving takes the rest of this season off, he’ll be primed and ready to go once things start back up next season. Plus, he’ll have a healthy Kevin Durant by his side getting back into the swing of things too. Patience might be the best option for the Nets and their point guard here.

Ja Morant is a human highlight reel and the Clippers are his muse

He’s straight up embarrassing them.

Ja Morant is one of the best prospects in the NBA right now and is pretty much a lock for the Rookie of the Year award this season.

But that’s not what he’s most known for this year. He’s literally been a human highlight reel this season.

On more than several occasions this year, Morant has tried to end the careers of his NBA counterparts with a handful of ferocious dunk attempts that look physically impossible until Morant actually attempts them — Kevin Love can attest.

On Saturday, he put the Los Angeles Clippers on notice in their own building – and even Lou Williams was impressed.

In the second quarter, Morant snatched Jerome Robinson’s soul through his ankles and proceeded to drain a three after watching him buckle and stumble away like a baby giraffe.

So good. Morant is so good. So good, in fact, that even the greatest sixth man of all-time, Lou Williams, gave Morant a “respect” head nod after watching him ruin his teammate’s career before it really even got started.

Earlier in the game, Morant caught this lob attempt that he had absolutely no business catching and finishing.

Y’all, look how close his head is to the rim. He’s 6’3. There’s no way he doesn’t have wings under that jersey.

Prediction

Nuggets 129, Wizards 114

Moneyline (ML)

PASS. Denver (-770) is just too expensive. Every $7.70 wagered on the Nuggets only profits $1 if they win. At +525, the Wizards might be tempting, but forget it. Too many players are out.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The NUGGETS (-10.5, -125) are the STRONGEST PLAY. They’re 9-6 on the road for the season and 3-1 in their last four games. The undermanned Wizards, 5-10 SU and 6-8 ATS at home, just have too many injuries to compete. They only had nine players available Friday.

New to sports betting? Every $1.25 wagered on the Nuggets spread will profit $1 if they win by 11 points or more (Ex: A $12.50 bet profits $10, a $62.50 wager profits $50 and it will take a $125 bet to profit $100).

Over/Under (O/U)

A slight lean to the OVER 222.5 (-106). The Wizards give up the most points in the league, allowing 121.1 points per game. Since Dec. 12, the Nuggets have been relying offense during a current 10-2 run, averaging 113.8 PPG – they’ve scored 119 points or more in three of the last four games.

LeBron James calls out critics after Anthony Davis’ monster night

LeBron James had an interesting response to Anthony Davis’ monster night.

Anthony Davis faced off against his old team for the second time this season on Friday night at the Staples Center, and he had another monster night against the Pelicans.

Davis was unstoppable on the offensive end, shooting 71 percent from the field with the help of LeBron James, who finished the game with 15 assists. Davis also hit three shots from behind the arc, and was a perfect 13-of-13 from the free-throw line, finishing with 46 points and 13 rebounds on the night.

Davis dropped 41 on the Pelicans on the road back in November. The win extended the Lakers’ current winning streak to four, and they still have two very winnable games left on their current five-game homestand, against the Pistons and Knicks.

After the game, LeBron James took a shot at the critics who argued that the Pelicans won the Anthony Davis trade over the summer.
