Prediction

Bucks 121, Nuggets 107

Moneyline (ML)

As expected, the Bucks (-556) are big favorites at home against a Nuggets team that has suffered some pretty significant injuries. It also doesn’t help that the Bucks are an incredible 22-2 at home this season, best in the NBA. As good as Denver are and as much value as they present in this contest (+400), there is just no way you can bet against Milwaukee at home. We also can’t eat the chalk involved in betting the Bucks. PASS and play the spread.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The BUCKS (-10.5, -110) are double-digit favorites over the Nuggets Friday night. While Denver (+10.5, -110) has fared well against the spread of late (4-2 ATS in their last six games), it just doesn’t appear they have the ability to stop the Bucks’ No. 1 ranked offense. Look for this game to be somewhat close throughout, but for the Bucks to pull away in the fourth quarter.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total for this big-time matchup is set at 223.5 points. That doesn’t feel like enough points as the Bucks average 120.0 points per game. This game probably won’t reach the 230’s, but expect it to be high-scoring enough for the OVER 223.5 (-115) to hit at Fiserv Forum.

Prediction

Lakers 118, Blazers 113

Moneyline (ML)

The Lakers (-910) are massive moneyline favorites over the Trail Blazers (+600) in their first game back since Kobe Bryant’s tragic death. While this would usually be an easy bet on the Lakers, there’s just no telling how this Lakers team might play after such a long layoff. I’ll PASS on this bet in favor of the spread.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Lakers (-12.5, -115) are double-digit favorites over the TRAIL BLAZERS (+12.5, -106) at home. It seems like far too many points considering Portland has just upset the Houston Rockets (125-112) and Indiana Pacers (139-129) in back-to-back games. I like the Lakers to find a way to win this game, but expect the Blazers to keep this close.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total for this Western Conference matchup is set at 229.5 points, which feels about right considering how explosive these offenses can be from night-to-night. Both teams are averaging over 113 points per game and have scorers all over the court. Look for this to be another high-scoring contest with the OVER 229.5 (-110) hitting in Los Angeles.

Grizzlies at Pelicans: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 9:35 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Pelicans 112, Grizzlies 111

Moneyline (ML)

The PELICANS (-222) are the play at home. They’re five games out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference, but with F Zion Williamson easing into the lineup for the stretch run, hope springs eternal in the Crescent City. The Grizzlies (+180) are hanging onto the eighth spot in the West right now, and they enter on a four-game winning streak, including victories in each of their past two outings.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The GRIZZLIES (+5.5, -115) are worth a look catching points in the Big Easy. Not only are they on a four-game winning streak, but they’re 4-0 ATS during the span, too, and 18-7-1 ATS across the past 26 overall. Memphis has also covered four of the past five games on the road. The Grizz will be looking to avenge a 126-116 loss at FedExForum back on Jan. 20, and that was before Zion made his debut.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 239.5 (+100) is the play in this battle of southern rivals. The Under is 7-2 across the past nine games for the Grizzlies, including that Jan. 20 meeting which had a line of 242.5. That game actually hit the Under by just a half-point. Expect fewer points, with better defense for NOLA with Zion in the middle.

Raptors at Pistons: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 7:45 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Raptors 112, Pistons 104

Moneyline (ML)

Being on the second half of a back-to-back has boosted the RAPTORS’ (-208) odds for the outright win. Toronto is second in the Eastern Conference, on a nine-game winning streak and 17-7 on the road for the season. The disappointing Pistons (+170) are 10th in the conference, riding a four-game losing skid and are just 9-16 at Little Caesars Arena.

Detroit is coming off a 125-115 road loss against the Brooklyn Nets Wednesday. The Raptors have won both of the season’s first two head-to-head meetings by double digits, winning 125-113 Oct. 30 and 112-99 Dec. 18. Toronto is 4-3 straight up when on the second half of a back-to-back and it is 5-4 SU with a rest disadvantage. Detroit is an unimpressive 3-5 with a rest advantage. Roll with the visitors at a higher number than what they should have.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Raptors to win outright returns a profit of $4.80.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Toronto failed to cover Thursday as a 10.5-point favorite against the Cavs. Friday’s spread is much tighter and based on the head-to-head play of the two teams this season, we’re backing the RAPTORS (-4.5, -115) to win by at least 5 points. The Raps have played within a 5-point margin just once during their nine-game winning streak. The Pistons’ last seven losses were all decided by margins of at least 5 points.

Toronto is 27-21 against the spread overall and 12-12 on the road. Detroit is just 17-31-1 ATS overall and 9-15 at home.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 223.5 (-115) on a high projection. The Raps are 3-4 against the Over/Under on no rest, while falling an average of 8.1 points below the projected totals in those games.

The HoopsHype Daily: The rest of the 2019-20 All-Stars were named yesterday, and the group steered quite young

The 2020 All-Star crew is real young, which bodes well for the future of the NBA.

FULL ALL-STAR GROUP NAMED: Late yesterday afternoon, the entire 2019-20 All-Star group was announced, and various players will be making their first appearance in the prestigious competition. This year’s debutants in the All-Star Game, barring injury, will be Trae Young, Luka Doncic and Pascal Siakam, who were announced as starters last week, as well as Jayson Tatum, Brandon Ingram, Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell, Bam Adebayo and Domantas Sabonis.

Nine first-time All-Stars would be the highest number of debutants for the contest since 2010, when guys like Deron Williams, Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose made their All-Star debuts. (Doesn’t time fly?) What’s more, this year’s average age for the distinguished group is 27.05, making it the youngest crop of All-Stars since 2004, when the average age was 26.97. That speaks highly to the future of the league, as many of this year’s first-time All-Stars have huge upside, and project to receive the honor for years to come, meaning the league’s next crop of marketable superstars are being formed right in front of our eyes.

One thing to keep an eye on here, though, and something that could change those two impressive numbers pretty markedly is the health of second-year phenom Doncic, who suffered another ankle sprain in practice yesterday and is set to receive an MRI tomorrow. If he’s forced to miss a few weeks of action, look for arguably this season’s biggest All-Star snub, Devin Booker, to take his place. Booker is 23, making him three years old than Doncic, so his inclusion would make the average age of the 2019-20 All-Stars jump up at least a bit.

ALL-STAR GAME FORMAT: For a few years now, the NBA has been looking at different ways to spice up the All-Star Game a bit, as the level of competitiveness in the competition had gotten laughable at one point.

This year, the league is going all in with changes to the game’s format, with the score resetting in each of the first three quarters before getting restored in the fourth, and the winners of the first three quarters earning $100,000 that will go to Chicago-based charities. Additionally, the final quarter will be untimed, with the winner being decided by whoever reaches 124 points first, a nice little tribute for Kobe.

MORE KOBE TRIBUTES: The City of Los Angeles is considering naming a street after fallen legend Kobe Bryant, though discussions on that topic are still early on in the process. Additionally, a memorial for Kobe, his daughter Gianna and the seven other victims is being planned, but it might not be for another couple of weeks.

For more on the Kobe tributes that continue pouring in from all over the place, including the golf world, just click here.

LATEST TRADE SCUTTLE: Another day, another batch of trade rumors as we approach the 2020 deadline.

The Clippers have registered interest in Knicks forward Marcus Morris, though the floor-spacing big man would prefer staying in New York long term.

Dallas made an offer for Andre Iguodala over the summer, one that included sending Courtney Lee and Golden State’s second-round pick to Memphis, but haven’t budged on improving the deal.

The Timberwolves have expressed interest in Magic swingman Aaron Gordon, who would fill a major hole the team has at the 4-spot.

MORE ON THE TRADE MARKET: We ranked the five players who have appeared most often in trade rumors over the past week, according to our site metrics. Andre Drummond’s name is still getting thrown around quite a bit.

FRESH POD: Our own Alex Kennedy is joined by New York Times best-selling author Jeff Pearlman, who wrote a book about the Shaq-and-Kobe Lakers teams from the early 2000s, to discuss the fallen 2-guard.

BRUTAL ALTITUDE: The Nuggets are an excellent three-point shooting team on the road (37.2 percent) but a porous one at home (32.2 percent), leading some to think Denver’s high altitude, which causes the air to feel dry, could have something to do with that.

FUTURE PLANS: Gordon Hayward is the Celtics’ likeliest trade candidate this season, with the rest of the team pretty firmly locked into the team’s future. He discusses his role with the team and what he’s heard about his future in Boston.

FIRST-TIME HONORS: Trae Young talks about what it’s like being named an All-Star for the first time in his career.

ALL-STAR CONTESTS: Damian Lillard is set to join this year’s three-point shootout, while Aaron Gordon has committed to the dunk contest. Some serious firepower joining the two entertaining All-Star festivities.

FIGHT FALLOUT: Elfrid Payton, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Marko Guduric will all be suspended one game for their roles in Wednesday night’s scuffle between the Knicks and Grizzlies, while Marcus Morris and Jae Crowder received fines.

Kyle Lowry got pushed by an NBA fan a second time: ‘It’s kind of getting crazy’

It happened a second time.

Back in the NBA Finals, Kyle Lowry got pushed by a Golden State Warriors fan who turned out to be a minority owner of the Bay Area team, part of a disturbing trend last season of negative fan-player interactions.

On Thursday night, it appeared to happen to the Toronto Raptors star a second time.

Lowry went for a loose ball late in the Raptors’ eventual win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on the road and saved it, getting into the second row at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, and as you’ll see from the video below, it clearly looks like a courtside fan gives him a two-handed shove that gets a reaction out of the guard:

Lowry said after the game that he didn’t know “If I’ll be able to control myself and hopefully I will” if this happens a third time to him.

Cleveland.com reports the Cavs are “aware” of the incident and that they’re looking into it. And it’s awful that this keeps happening, especially to Lowry, but just in general.

How to Watch Warriors vs. Celtics, NBA Live Stream, Schedule, TV Channel, Start Time

Watch Warriors vs. Celtics Live Online.

Both the Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors have experienced changes this season, with the two teams going in opposite directions as a result of those changes. While the Warriors have struggled after losing most of their nucleus to free agency or injury, the Celtics have flourished and find themselves near the top of the Eastern Conference. When the two teams play in Boston on Thursday, the Celtics will look to keep those trends going.

Warriors vs. Celtics

  • When: Thursday, January 30
  • Time: 8:00 p.m. ET
  • TV: TNT
  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

The contest against the Celtics will be the second leg of a difficult East Coast road trip for the Warriors. Golden State entered this road trip having lost 13 out of 14 games and at the bottom of the Western Conference after so many years at the top of it. Without Steph Curry and Klay Thompson this season, things could continue to be an uphill climb.

Meanwhile, Boston enters this contest coming home after a three-game road trip. That road trip closed with a road game against the Miami Heat on Tuesday in which they won 109-101 after the Celtics split the first two games against the Orlando Magic and New Orleans Pelicans. Boston currently holds a top-four seed in the Eastern Conference but will need to continue winning as teams like the Pacers and Sixers are right behind them and could relegate the Celtics to a visiting role in the first round of the playoffs.

LeBron James and Anthony Davis honored Kobe Bryant with new tattoos

A lasting tribute to Kobe.

The next time LeBron James and Anthony Davis take the court for the Lakers, they’ll be carrying permanent tributes to Kobe Bryant.

Following the news of Bryant’s death in Sunday’s California helicopter crash, the Lakers had their Tuesday game against the Clippers postponed by the league. LeBron and Davis — both of whom had close relationships with Bryant — were hit especially hard by the Lakers great’s tragic death and the loss of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna.

On Wednesday, LeBron and Davis took another step to honor Kobe’s memory with both of them getting Bryant tattoos on their legs by the same artist, Vanessa Aurelia.

LeBron shared the commemorative tattoo on his Instagram Story, which appeared to be of a snake — for the Black Mamba — with the No. 24.

Davis also posted a clip of his tattoo’s progress to his Instagram Story.

Earlier this week, both LeBron and Davis posted their reflections on the tragic crash to social media. LeBron had passed Kobe for third on the NBA’s all-time scoring list the night before the crash and spoke with Kobe on Saturday.

The Lakers will take the floor for the first time since Bryant’s death on Friday as they host the Trail Blazers.

Report: Daryl Morey’s Hong Kong tweet could impact NBA salary cap

Daryl Morey’s tweet reportedly cost the NBA nine figures.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey may have sent the most expensive tweet of all-time when he tweeted his support for anti-government protestors in Hong Kong earlier this season, and the fallout from the tweet could reportedly have an impact on NBA free agency.

China made the decision to pull sponsorships and TV coverage in the wake of Morey’s tweet. That is believed to have cost the league anywhere between $150 million and $200 million, according to a report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

That number is going to have a considerable impact on the league down the line. The 2020-2021 salary cap could drop from a projected $116 million to $113 million, per the report.

This year it won’t change things much, but next summer it might

In the grand scheme, it might not feel like $3 million means a lot — especially when we consider how much money has been thrown around by teams year after year.

For this season it particular, it doesn’t mean much of anything. The NBA already has its salary cap numbers down for this season and we’re halfway through the year.

However, we might see teams trying to prepare themselves for the summer of 2020 and 2021. This news has big implications there — not just for teams trying to snag free agents but also for teams trying to retain their own.

The luxury tax number was projected to be at $141 million but would drop to $138 million if the new projections hold true. There were already just a handful of teams with cap space next season and that dwindles down even more if projections hold true.

The Warriors, in particular, are burned by the new number. As a repeater tax team, meaning they’ve spent multiple years in the NBA’s luxury tax threshold, they would have to pay about $80 million in penalties if the tax drops to $138 million instead of $65 million if the tax stays at $141 million.

Who knew the power of Twitter could extend this far?

Lakers’ Quinn Cook: ‘I’ve been winning all my life so I know what it takes’

Los Angeles Lakers guard Quinn Cook was one of the players in the NBA who was hit the hardest when legend Kobe Bryant suddenly passed away.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Quinn Cook was one of the players in the NBA who was hit the hardest when legend Kobe Bryant suddenly passed away. Cook, 26, has said that his late father Ted Cook was the biggest fan of the Lakers he had ever met. The former NCAA and NBA champion also said that he was personally “obsessed” with the team when he was growing up. He was visibly shaken at a memorial for Bryant outside Staples Center.

The guard is also one of several in the league to change his number to honor the five-time NBA champion.

HoopsHype had a chance to catch up with Cook just a few days before the news about Bryant’s passing struck the basketball world.

However, the NBA guard reflected on lessons he learned from Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach Morgan Wootten, known as The Godfather of Basketball, who passed away on January 21, 2020.

You and Danny Green are the only two active NBA players who have won both NBA and NCAA championships. So I’m curious how this locker room has been comparable to the other champions who you’ve played around since you’ve been around so many now.

Quinn Cook: Each team is different. But I think special teams have little things like attention to detail. How together we are on and off the floor is a factor. Obviously, we’re all talented. But how you come together or how you make sacrifices toward a common goal is what separates this team and any championship team I’ve been on – high school, USA, college and obviously the NBA. Just those characteristics stick out.

What are some of the things that you bring to that mentality personally?

QC: Just me. I’ve been winning all my life so I know what it takes. I know how to be a leader, how to be the best teammate I can be. [Laughs] Plus I can play a little bit so that helps, too.

What are some of the things that you’ve picked up being around this team in particular and how have you improved your game?

QC: Everything. Being around these future Hall-of-Famers, being around these guys every single day. I pick their brains all day. I see how they prepare and I see what things I can do that they do to add to my regiment and I’m just always inspired. I try to ask as many questions as possible and just being a sponge. So it’s been great so far.

Now down the stretch, what kind of role could you see yourself playing in Frank Vogel’s offense?

QC: Being a great teammate, man. Really just staying ready. I can shoot, try to make plays…I play a little defense. I try to be the best teammate.

You went to DeMatha High School for three years. They recently lost their longtime coach Morgan Wootten. What was your relationship like with him?

QC: We had a great relationship. That’s the first basketball camp ever I went to. I went to that camp all the way through high school and he recruited me to go to his son’s high school, so we were extremely close. Once I did go to DeMatha, Coach always looked out for me and always gave me advice. Even though he wasn’t there as the coach, he was a legend – not just there but in the whole basketball world. I was just sad to hear about it. I’m extremely close with his son Joe as well as Joe’s wife. I’m praying for them, both of them. We lost a special human being.

What were some of the things that he helped you most with your game? What was his lasting impression on you?

QC: I first learned how to work out going to his camp. Obviously, growing up, my vision of working out was going outside playing on-on-one or two-on-two or three-on-three. But we’d go to his camp and he would give us, the whole camp, packets of workouts to do. And we’d get a grade at the camp. Some kids probably didn’t use the workout, but I did and I’d try to come back. That was my test every summer. I’d go to camp, take what I learned, use that packet all season and I’d come back the next year and see where I got better. So he taught me a lot. I went to his camp for like seven years. There was too much to learn.

In college, you played at Duke. How closely are you following them this season and college in general?

QC: I’m following close. They’re together. They took a lump early and have since won a lot of games, tough games. They lost two more but just won a big one against Miami. But they’re together. They play hard and Duke will always give everyone their best shot. They’ll be ready by March.

Are you still pretty close with your teammates at Duke? You had so many NBA guys. How special was that team?

QC: For sure, for sure. So special. That’s the best feeling. That’s all our goals: going to college and get to the NBA. We made it work. Guys came off the bench when they would start anywhere else. I sacrificed a lot just to win a championship. Win, lose or draw – especially that year – it didn’t matter. We could have lost in the first round but we knew we gave it our all every single day. It was a dream crew on and off the floor. It was genuine, it was genuine. We won the national championship and fast forward and eight of us played in the league. Eight of us played in the NBA. Even now, you’ve got seven in the NBA on seven different teams with me as well as Jahlil Okafor, Semi Ojeleye, Justise Winslow, Tyus Jones, Grayson Allen and Amile Jefferson.
