Anthony Davis takes home Western Conference Player of the Week

Anthony Davis took home the Western Conference Player of the Week award after monstrous performances in a 4-0 week.

Even though he was sick for most of the week, Anthony Davis was the best player in the league last week and he was honored as the best player in the West on Monday for his performances during a 4-0 week for the Los Angeles Lakers.

The NBA announced that Davis was the Western Conference Player of the Week for last week, averaging 35 points per game and eight rebounds while shooting 63% from the field. He had monster games of 39 points on Friday in Portland and a 50-point performance last night against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Miami’s Jimmy Butler, who the Lakers will face on their upcoming road trip this Friday, took home the honor for the Eastern Conference.

Davis won the Player of the Week Award to begin the month of November as well. Davis’ has led the Lakers in scoring all season while leading the NBA in blocks all season long.

The Lakers are off for the next couple of days but they will also be traveling across the country to Florida where they will begin a five-game Eastern Conference road trip on Wednesday against the Orlando Magic.

Report: Rajon Rondo (hamstring) out Sunday vs. Timberwolves

Rajon Rondo will miss Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves after leaving Friday’s game against Portland early.

The Los Angeles Lakers are back home for just one night before they head out East for their longest road trip of the season, starting Wednesday night in Orlando. When they do so, they will have an even lighter backcourt than they’re used to when they host Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Wiggins and Towns have played well together this season, winning several close games and pushing themselves to a 10-11 record, good for seventh place in the Eastern Conference. But as the Lakers prepare to host the Timberwolves, they’ll be without Rajon Rondo (hamstring) in addition to already being without Avery Bradley once again, according to Silver Screen and Roll’s Harrison Faigen.

The Lakers have been rolling throughout the course of the entire season and being cautious with injuries, especially for veterans like Bradley and Rondo, is the smartest way to manage a stable of talent that looks just a little more weathered than others.

LeBron James calls 48-46 49ers-Saints game ‘best of the year’

LeBron James has a game later today, but he was able to watch what he called the “best game of the year” earlier on Sunday.

LeBron James is only home for a few more days before he and the Los Angeles Lakers hit the road again, but even though he has a game later today, he was able to enjoy a regular Sunday watching football at home before taking on the Minnesota Timberwolves. It also just so happened that his regular Sunday featured what James and many believe to be the best game of the season in the NFL as the San Francisco 49ers outlasted the New Orleans Saints in a classic, 48-46.

James doesn’t tweet often but he was moved to go to twitter following the conclusion of the game, which ended on a game-winning field goal by the 49ers as the clock expired.

James wasn’t the only football fan who thought that Sunday’s Saints-49ers game was classic, but he definitely got a little excited. However, it’s unclear if LeBron is playing in the fantasy football playoffs these days. While he was in a high stakes league with some other NBA people, he reportedly quit that league after a bad season.

LeBron enjoys ‘special’ moment with Carmelo before Lakers thump Blazers

The Los Angeles Lakers continue to dominate their opponents, but they’re still trying to create their own identity. g

PORTLAND, Ore.– Friday night at the Moda Center wasn’t a pretty affair, although the points scored might say otherwise. But the Los Angeles Lakers win ugly even when they play beautifully as they did on Friday night, grinding the humming Blazers offense to a halt and winning yet another game with their physical brand of play.

A night that started with the feelings of nostalgia surrounding LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony became a war of attrition almost immediately.  Portland’s Rodney Hood tore his Achilles tendon in the first quarter, Anthony Davis ran headfirst into Blazers Governor Jody Allen in the third, Rajon Rondo left at halftime with a hamstring injury and even Lakers guard Troy Daniels needing an additional post-game check-up after the game. And by the way, Blazers head coach Terry Stotts was ejected for the first time in his NBA coaching career while all of this went down.

But after the carnage of another battle was done, the mighty Lakers found themselves on top once again, beating the Trail Blazers to move to 20-3, tied with the Milwaukee Bucks for the best record in the NBA.

“It’s all about our mentality,” LeBron James said to LeBron Wire’s inquiry about where the physicality on defense starts. “And it’s what Coach Vogel preaches and our coaching staff preaches every day. Our job is to go out there and do it and we’ve been doing that for the whole year.”

“It starts with having physical guys on the roster,” Vogel, who earlier this season compared LeBron to a middle linebacker, said of the team’s physicality. “It’s part of the identity we’re trying to create. From Day 1 of training camp, we want to be a team that plays harder than our opponents and more physical than our opponents every night.”

That the Lakers are such a physical defense and also don’t foul a lot (11th in free-throw to field goal ratio) is even more impressive, but the Lakers go into every game trying to impose their physicality in the moments when hitting people is allowed in the game of basketball.

“It’s a delicate balance but it can be attained and achieved,” Vogel told LeBron Wire about the Lakers’ physical brand on of defense. “There are also opportunities to do it. Box outs? That’s time for people to hit each other. We embrace that, we embrace collisions at the rim, embrace contact, show your hands so you’re not trying to get fouls. And hopefully, we’re doing a good job of it.”

James enjoyed what he called a “special moment” on Friday night when he took the court again with his friend Anthony, but Lakers showed once again that they’re pretty “special” themselves, even though James and the squad aren’t getting too far ahead of where they are today. When LeBron was asked a question after the game about Jared Dudley’s tweets regarding critics of the Lakers schedule in the first part of the season, he tried to play coy but his gregarious nature couldn’t be held back.

“What did Jared say?” James said after a lengthy smile that elicited laughter from the gathered reporters. “Jared said that? I didn’t see it. We wanted to play well on this road trip and we did that.”

Anthony and James had several moments, a hug before the game and a few matchups during it but the best player on the court Friday night was Anthony Davis. Davis had a game-high 39 points to go with nine boards, as well as several incredible plays on the defensive end. Davis, who has been battling an illness throughout this three-game road trip, should stay sick, according to LeBron.

“Try and find as many sick people as possible and put him around them so he can continue to be sick,” James said when asked about how to keep Davis rolling. “That’s why. You see what he did on this road trip being sick? And he’s starting to feel a lot better and I don’t quite like it. I might sneeze on him a couple of times. Nah, man, it’s our job to get the ball to AD, put him in the right position to be successful offensively and make it as easy as possible for him so all he has to do is make plays. He feeds off of us and we feed off of him so he’s just been great all year.”

James also got to tussle with one of the players who took advantage of the down year for he and the Lakers last season, Mario Hezonja. Hezonja famously became a meme last season for his last-second block on LeBron during the Lakers visit to Madison Square Garden. LeBron went after him multiple times on the night, but he insisted it wasn’t something he envisioned when he took the court.

“He was seeking it out. He checked in the game and picked me up full court. I just wanted to try and be aggressive offensively but more importantly, if I draw two finding my teammates, that’s all it was about. I don’t really seek out guys on the floor, I just try to play the game the right way and see what happens.”

LeBron had a lot of those moments tonight as he added eight assists to go along with 31 points while he also led the Lakers with four made 3-pointers on a big 3-point night for them, connecting on 17 3s as a squad on Friday.

But while the offense was the big shiny object to look at for the Lakers tonight, the identity of the team is being built by physical thumping they brought throughout this 3-0 road trip.

Notes

  • During a play in the second half, LeBron James accidentally collided with a server working courtside and knocked her over. James went to go pick her up, which led to a pretty amazing exchange on the court. “I was getting back on defense, I was out of bounds but I didn’t see her,” James said of the collision. “When I turned, she was already on the ground. I felt it was needed because it was a break in the play. Hezonja pushed AD down on the offensive rebound and I looked and had a chance to pick her up and apologize and ask her if she was okay. It was a pretty cool moment for me.”
  • James was told after the game that the server said it was her coolest moment on the job. James is no stranger to moments like that, but he still doesn’t know what to say after. “It always does. That’s why I kind of don’t know what to say. I kind of get lost for words when you hear other people’s thoughts on a moment like that. Just humbled, I never take it for granted, to play the game that I play, to inspire the people I inspire and to make moments with people like that if it’s from kids or an adult in that instance.”
  • LeBron was thrilled to be back on the court with his “brother,” Carmelo Anthony tonight. “It’s always special. I can’t even lie, it’s always special to be on the floor with a brother of mine. We got so much history, you know we’ve competed against each other since 2001 when it all started. In Colorado Springs, at the Junior Olympics. We’ve been on the same team with the Olympics and then just my brother. It’s always great to compete. It’s great to be on the same floor period. No matter if we are teammates or competing on our respective clubs.”

Rajon Rondo (hamstring) out for rest of the game vs. Blazers

Rajon Rondo was unable to finish the Los Angeles Lakers game Friday against the Portland Trail Blazers.

While it wasn’t as serious as Rodney Hood’s torn Achilles for the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night, the Los Angeles Lakers did not escape Friday night’s game in Portland unscathed.

The Lakers were dominant in the first half of Friday’s game as they once again put together an excellent showing on the road, leading the Trail Blazers 77-62 at halftime. But the Lakers did have some bad news at halftime as reserve guard Rajon Rondo was ruled out for the remainder of the game with a hamstring injury, according to Tania Ganguli of the Los Angeles Times. Rondo had missed the first few weeks of the season with a calf injury.

Rondo had six points, three rebounds, and three assists at halftime. He’s also been shooting the lights out from the 3-point line, shooting 50 percent on 3-pointers entering Friday’s game. Rondo is a career 32 percent 3-point shooter but he shot 36 percent from there last season.

We will update this story when more information on Rondo becomes available.

Blazers coach Terry Stotts says LeBron’s ‘playmaking, leadership’ most impressive

The head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers believes LeBron James is playing better for the Los Angeles Lakers this year.

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts is very impressed with what he’s seen from Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James so far this season as he and the Lakers are 19-3 heading into Friday night’s game in Portland.

According to Stotts, it’s not just the statistic and leading the NBA in assists that have impressed him so far from James this season.

“He’s better than last year,” he told reporters on Friday. No, he’s playing at a very high level. I know his assists speak for themselves, he’s doing a lot other than scoring even though his scoring numbers are up. Just his playmaking and his leading the team is the most impressive thing.”

James is second on the Laker in scoring at 25.4 points per game, just behind Anthony Davis’ 26 points per game. In addition to his scoring, James is averaging a career-high 10.8 assists per game. James has never before led the NBA in assists but he looks primed to do just that in his 17th season.

James and the Lakers are set to take on Carmelo Anthony and the Portland Trail Blazers tonight at 7:30 p.m. pacific on ESPN.

LeBron James says Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has ‘been phenomenal’

Earlier in the season, Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard came to KCP’s defense on Instagram.

While the Los Angeles Lakers are expected to get an update after they get back to L.A. on the status of guard Avery Bradley, the good news for them is that his replacement has performed amicably in his stead, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

KCP, at several points during his Lakers tenure, has been someone that many fans and media often harped on via social media (usually unfairly) to the point that Dwight Howard defended him on Instagram earlier this season. That moment was representative of the current Lakers group, a complete juxtaposition to the squad that performed well at times last year but truly never looked in-sync.

After Wednesday night’s win, LeBron James was asked about Caldwell-Pope, whom he said has “been phenomenal,” as transcribed by Harrison Faigen of Silver Screen and Roll.

Caldwell-Pope has usually had the task of guarding opposing team’s primary ball-handler, as Bradley did. He’s done an excellent job, using his 6-5 frame and length to put pressure on the ball. Offensively, he’s found his stroke as LeBron mentioned above.

Over the last 10 games, Caldwell-Pope is averaging 10.3 points per game on 52% shooting from the field and a scorching 45.9% from the 3-point line. He’s also thrown in nearly two assists per game to go with it.

When Bradley returns, Vogel may have to make a decision on whether he wants to keep KCP in the lineup and bring Bradley off the bench. The team has played very well when both have started, so it will be hard for the team to be upset no matter which way he goes. As far as problems go, this is one that you want to have as an NBA coach.

Today marks nine years since LeBron James and Dwyane Wade’s iconic photo

The most memorable image of the LeBron James era of the Miami Heat turns nine years old on Friday.

Although Friday night is a highlight anticipated night for lovers of the 2003 NBA Draft as LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony are set to face off against each other later tonight in Portland, December 6 was already a big day in the history of that draft class and the NBA’s Banana Boaters.

Friday marked the nine-year anniversary of the iconic photo of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade from LeBron’s first season of four in Miami. The photo was taken from a regular season game in Milwaukee but it is hard to beat as the best sports photograph of the decade by Associated Press photographer Morry Gash.

The Heat reached higher heights throughout the LeBron era, winning two championships over four years and four NBA Finals appearances. Wade and James are still close to this day, even though Wade retired from the NBA at the end of last season. Wade recently moved with his family to Los Angeles where his eldest son Zaire is playing high school basketball at Sierra Canyon with LeBron’s eldest son, Bronny Jr.

ESPN makes epic LeBron-Carmelo montage ahead of Lakers-Blazers

The Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers will come second to another match-up between LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony.

As fate would have it, the first game between LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony in over a year and their 34th NBA meeting overall will be a nationally televised game at 7:30 p.m. pacific time on ESPN.

With the careers of LeBron and Carmelo happening as ESPN became even more dominant in the sports media landscape as the Worldwide Leader, they have a wealth of footage of the two guys together including interviews done with both of them over the years. ESPN put all of that footage to good use for a video they posted on social media Friday morning in advance of Friday’s showdown between two of the three remaining players from the 2003 draft.

Memories will be flooding back for fans and for the participants as well, as the two came in together. But it also has a new meaning now as Anthony has worked his way back from out of the NBA to one of the most inspiring stories in the league, helping spark a Blazers team that was struggling before he arrived to win four of their last five games. Anthony’s contract was also guaranteed for the remainder of the season, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

LeBron James enters Portland to face Carmelo Anthony a 34th time

LeBron James and his Los Angeles Lakers are in the City of Roses to take on Carmelo Anthony and the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday.

A lot has changed since 2003 but one of the things that remains the same on Friday night is that LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony will once again be on an NBA court after entering the league together on a seemingly intertwined journey over 16 years ago.

LeBron James is still an MVP-level player while Carmelo Anthony has become the league’s most inspiring story after being exiled from the NBA for over a year before joining Portland a few weeks ago and playing a large part in saving a season for one of last year’s Western Conference finalists. He’s a third option these days behind Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum but he still has plenty to give, as he has shown on his way to a Western Conference Player of the Week award last week.

The Trail Blazers have won four of their last five as they look to salvage a season that looked dead in the water before bringing Anthony in to save the power forward spot after shoulder surgery forced Zach Collins from action until at least March. On Thursday afternoon, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Anthony’s contract had been guaranteed through the rest of the season.

That we get another chapter between the two guys, the closest we’ve ever come to Bird and Magic in the intervening years this many years later, is something that shouldn’t be lost on anyone who loves hoops tomorrow night.
