Navy (0-0) vs Marshall (0-0) Game Preview

Why Marshall Will Win

New head coach Charles Huff is walking into a great situation. He’s got a strong young quarterback in Grant Wells throwing to a good group of receivers, and it’s all operating behind an offensive line that won’t have a problem keeping the Navy pass rush out of the backfield.

It’s the other side that’s going to be the star.

Marshall had the best defensive in Conference USA and was No. 1 in the nation in scoring D. The front seven knows how to handle the run, allowing just 96 yards per game with the linebackers who’ll know how to keep with the Navy ground attack.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Navy Will Win

Can Marshall get its offensive groove back after a disastrous end to 2020?

Yeah, the Herd defense was great all year, and the offensive side was strong for the first seven games – all wins – but outside of a 17-7 win over Appalachian State there weren’t any wins over anyone who was any good.

Navy might not have much of a pass rush, but the linebacking corps should be able to hold up against the Marshall ground game, and the secondary should also go from good to great.

As long as the Midshipmen offense can operate like it’s supposed to with the option attack – or, at least control the clock and the tempo – Marshall will never be able to take over. The game will never get out of hand even if the Navy O sputters.

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Navy offense start to work like it’s supposed to?

Marshall’s O might have died down the stretch, but the Midshipmen were non-existent with 13 points in the final three games. However, the defense did its part to keep the games close.

New year, new teams, new parts – but the score will still be low and close throughout.

Expect a more physical Navy team than 2020 offensively, and look for the defense to be even better. It’ll be a close game throughout with neither team pulling away, but Navy will own the time of possession battle, going on one grinding fourth quarter drive to pull of a tough, fun game at home.

2021 CFN American Athletic Preseason Rankings

1. Cincinnati Bearcats

Quick Take: There’s a whole lot to love on a loaded team with an NFL QB in Desmond Ridder and a fantastic defense led by a few special corners. Win on the road at Indiana and Notre Dame – hardly a given, though – and the CFP talk will kick in.
Cincinnati Preview | Schedule

2. UCF Knights

Quick Take: Trust in Gus. The hiring of Gus Malzahn was inspired, and he’s got the parts in place to win big right away. Everyone might be talking about Cincinnati, but don’t be shocked if this grows into the star of the AAC.
UCF Preview | Schedule

3. Houston Cougars

Quick Take: This could be one of the high-risers in the AAC. The program hasn’t had a lick of luck since Dana Holgorsen took over, but Houston could be a factor if the defense can be a whole lot better.
Houston Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532587]

4. Memphis Tigers

Quick Take: It hasn’t been a problem for years, but … can the offensive backfield be good enough? The numbers and production will be there, but this isn’t going to be an easy run.
Memphis Preview | Schedule

5. SMU Mustangs

Quick Take: If nothing else, the Mustangs are going to be fun. The lines might not be good enough to get by the better teams, but O will be strong enough to pull off an upset or three.
SMU Preview | Schedule

6. Tulane Green Wave

Quick Take: It’s going to be a good team with a rough record. The experience is there, the coaching is great, and there’s a whole lot to like … except for the schedule. It’s going to be a fight just to go bowling.
Tulane Preview | Schedule

7. Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Quick Take: One of the biggest shockers of 2020 will still be good, but it’ll be a rough start with a tough slate. Expect solid more than sensational, and that might be just enough to pull off a few stunners.
Tulsa Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532393]

8. Temple Owls

Quick Take: Don’t sleep on the Owls. No one will give them a whole lot of love after a miserable 2020, but don’t be shocked if they’re a thorn in everyone’s side.
Temple Preview | Schedule

9. Navy Midshipmen

Quick Take: The offensive line has to step it up in a hurry. The team wasn’t nearly strong enough on either side of the ball last year, and it’s still going to be a battle to get back to the 2019 form.
Navy Preview | Schedule

10. East Carolina Pirates

Quick Take: Can the Pirates make up for their defense with more from the offense? The lines are a problem, but there’s enough pop to pull off a few shockers in shootouts.
ECU Preview | Schedule

11. USF Bulls

Quick Take: The offense had enough moments in Jeff Scott’s first year to be excited – the 1-8 record aside – and the linebacking corps should be a plus. Good luck, though, finding more than a few wins on the harsh slate.

2021 Preseason CFN American Conference Offensive Player of the Year

QB Desmond Ridder, Sr. Cincinnati

This isn’t as obvious as it seems.

Yes, the 6-4, 215-pounder is rolling the NFL Draft charts with his fantastic combination of size, arm, and mobility, but this is a big year for offensive stars in the American Athletic Conference.

This could be the year of UCF QB Dillon Gabriel under a new coaching staff, and there are a slew of talented backs and receivers, but … it’s Ridder.

The leader and star of a dangerous Bearcat team that’s thinking even bigger this season, he threw for 19 touchdowns, ran for 12 more, and is about to do it all again.

2021 Preseason CFN American Conference Defensive Player of the Year

LB Dorian Williams, Soph. Tulane

He’s not all that big, and he’s not your typical edge type who’ll be a dominant pass rusher, but the 6-1, 220-pound all-around tweener is an all-around menace.

Willams has the range of a defensive back, he’s a pass rusher, and he’s coming off a massive season as the best tackler on a good defense. He led the way with 98 stops, and he was the best in the American Athletic Conference in total tackles for loss with 16.5 to go along with 4.5 sacks. Decent in pass coverage, he’ll be even more of a stat-sheet filler.

Navy College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense didn’t work like it was supposed to. It wasn’t physical enough and it didn’t tear off the big runs like a normal Navy O. The Midshipmen only averaged 178 rushing yards per game, the offense only averaged 16.6 points per outing and the team was 124th in the nation out of 127 teams in total offense. The ground game has to find its groove again or it’ll be another lost season.

It starts up front. The Midshipmen struggled to get the blocking going, and now it has get better with three new starters. Navy can’t be 42nd in the nation in rushing again, and it needs to improve without leading rusher Nelson Smith. It’s Navy. There are runners.

FB Jamale Carothers isn’t huge, but he’s a fast inside threat who can handle the work, and there are plenty of options for the slotback position including former QB Tyger Goslin and veteran Chance Warren.

Goslin could seem time at quarterback if needed, but 5-9, 165-pound Xavier Arline will likely get the first look. He’ll have to battle with 6-2, 220-pound sophomore Tai Lavatai and 6-0, 190-pound Jayden Umbarger, but no matter who’s under center, the production has to be steadier.

As always, there won’t be a whole lot of passes – just 57 competitions in the ten games last year – but 6-5, 221-pound Mychal Cooper is good and 6-2, 203-pound Mark Walker is another big target who can hit the home run.

CFN 2021 American Athletic Conference Football Rankings: Pre-Spring

The pre-spring version of the CFN 2021 rankings with a first look at all the American Athletic Conference teams.

[jwplayer GOXHcfXn]

2021 American Athletic Conference Rankings: Pre-Spring

1. Cincinnati Bearcats

Why To Be Happy: Star OT James Hudson and RB Gerrid Dokes are off to the NFL, but that’s about it for an offense that should be every bit as devastating, if not more so. The return of QB Desmond Ridder is everything and he has the parts around him to shine again. However …

What To Work On: Doaks was great, and WR Jayshon Jackson has hit the transfer portal. The defensive line loses a few main guys starting with Elijah Ponder, and the secondary has to replace enough key parts to matter with James Wiggins and Darrick Forrest two big-time playmakers who’ll be missed.

Bottom Line: It’s asking for the world to repeat all the success of 2020, but the Bearcats have the experience and enough main men back to demand nothing less than another amazing run.

2. Memphis Tigers

Why To Be Happy: How do you replace a quarterback who produced like Brady White did? You throw talent at the problem with Grant Gunnell coming in from Arizona and Peter Parrish adding some possible flash from LSU. This was a young, rebuilding team last year that now should be okay at quarterback and loaded everywhere else. There are a few losses, but not enough to be a killer.

What To Work On: The Tigers have to improve the pass defense with most of the starters back, the offense has to slow down with the turnovers, and the explosion needs to return. The O was more than fine, but getting back to 2019 levels would be huge.

Bottom Line: It’s all about being able to challenge Cincinnati, and the Tigers have the parts to do it. It’ll be a loaded fight at quarterback to replace White, more than enough talent is back to repeat the 2020 8-3-level success, and the expectations should be sky high.

3. UCF Knights

Why To Be Happy: The offensive line should be a rock. The Knights always fill in the parts at the skill jobs, and QB Dillon Gabriel is back, but start with the offensive front five that appears to be loaded and build from there. The defense might have had issues, but the front six/seven is loaded with veterans and now a little bit of depth.

What To Work On: There were a ton of opt-outs and missing parts before 2020, and there are a whole slew of losses to the NFL from the 2021 version. The underclassmen are sticking around, but RB Greg McCrae, S Richie Grant, WR/RB Otis Anderson and WR Tre Nixon are just the main guys who have to be replaced, and …

Bottom Line: UCF needs to find the new stars in a hurry. The Knights will be dangerous and explosive again, but Cincinnati might be even better and several other American Athletic Conference teams will be strong. UCF doesn’t start 2021 by owning the league.

4. SMU Mustangs

Why To Be Happy: Shane Buechele is gone, and in comes Oklahoma transfer Tanner Mordecai to push for the starting quarterback job to keep the machine up and going. North Texas transfer Tre Siggers is a perfect-fit running back for the attack to go along with an already deep backfield, all five starters are retuning to the offensive line, and best of all, WR Reggie Roberson is back.

What To Work On: It might not seem like much, but losing PK Chris Naggar to the NFL matters. He was an all-star who hit 17-of-21 field goals for a team that won two games by three points each.

Bottom Line: The Mustangs have the pieces to challenge for the American Athletic Conference title, but they’ve had them for the last two years and weren’t able to pull it off. If the quarterback situation is solid right away, they’ll be a true challenger to Cincinnati.

5. Houston Cougars

Why To Be Happy: It’s time for this offense to start working already, and it begins with QB Clayton Tune returning along with most of the defense. Active in the transfer portal, getting WR KeSean Carter and CB Alex Hogan from Texas Tech matters, and landing DE Tre Williams from Missouri should help, but …

What To Work On: This is one of the biggest X factor teams in the AAC with so many parts in flux and in the transfer portal. Positive consistency has been non-existent for the program, and this year’s team will need to come together fast with several new parts to be any sort of a player in an improved league.

Bottom Line: Now is when the Houston program might actually get rolling under Dana Holgorsen – at least that’s the hope. The program all but opted out in 2019 to get ready for 2020, and 2020 never got going for obvious reasons. A quick fix would be nice.

6. Tulane Green Wave

Why To Be Happy: There’s not a whole lot of messing around with the transfer portal – the team appears to be relatively settled. That’s a plus considering the 2020 version needs more tweaking than overhauling. The few losses might be more like upgrades if the new parts are as good as expected. As long as QB Michael Pratt keeps improving, look out, because …

What To Work On: The passing game needs work. The addition of Utah transfer RB Devin Brumfield will help the ground game that pays the program’s bills, but there weren’t enough third down conversions – that’s where Pratt has to be better. The secondary needs to get stronger, too.

Bottom Line: The Green Wave might not lead the league in rushing again, but it’ll still be a dangerous team with the right blend of parts to hang with anyone. However, this team has got to figure out how to get off to good starts and needs to be far more consistent.

Army (7-2) vs Navy (3-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Navy Will Win

The defense has been solid over the last few weeks.

It got lit up by SMU on Halloween and had issues over more of the season, but it was able to hold Memphis to under 300 yards and kept Tulsa under wraps in a 19-6 Golden Hurricane win.

The run defense doesn’t get into the backfield, but it’s been able to hold up against the run over the last month – obviously, slowing down the Army running game is everything.

Navy isn’t bad when it has to throw, averaging over 17 yards per completion and with the ability to throw a wee bit when it has to. Army will hit a big downfield pass once in a while, but the attack really can’t throw if it needs to.

Week 15 College Schedule

Why Army Will Win

It’s sort of a problem for Navy the it can’t run.

The ground game has been just okay, not great, hitting 200 yards just once in the last four games and averaging just 3.7 yards per carry. The offense isn’t controlling the time and the action, it’ll lose the time of possession battle by at least five minutes, and it doesn’t have the defense Army brings.

The main problem for the Midshipmen will be on third downs. Army is great at converting on third down, Navy isn’t.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a home game for Army with the game being moved from Philadelphia.

Air Force doesn’t have the Army type of ground game, but it’s a mainly-run only offense that came up with close to seven yards per carry and 369 yards in a 40-7 win over Navy earlier in the year. Army won’t win that easily, but it runs better than Navy and is a whole lot stronger defensively.

However, Navy played a better schedule. It beat Tulane on the road, and Army just lost 38-12 to the Green Wave. Don’t get too hung up on that – Army just held the Georgia Southern option attack to 175 rushing yards and hasn’t allowed more than 200 this year.

Why Memphis Will Win

The punting game is outstanding.

Memphis might be known for its high-powered offense that’s second in the AAC and tenth in the nation in total offense – it has the balance and versatility to do a little of anything it needs to do – but in a game like this, being able to tilt the field is a huge deal.

The run defense has enough good parts to handle the one-dimensional Midshipmen without getting rolled over, but it’s Adam Williams who needs to be the real star. The junior averages 44 yards per kick for the AAC’s best punting game, and Navy is just okay at returning kicks.

Memphis can score immediately. Navy has to be methodical.

Why Navy Will Win

Too many teams don’t commit to the run against Memphis because they can’t. Either they can’t do it well enough, or the game gets out of hand and they have to get throwing to keep up.

Even with the Tiger offense rocking and rolling, the defense keeps having problems putting games away. It’s getting the job done, but the D is one of the worst in the conference allowing 477 yards per game – and that’s after having no problems with the anemic USF and Stephen F. Austin offenses over the last few weeks.

The Navy offense isn’t just about running now – it’s been able to throw for over 200 yards in each of the last two games and it’s showing more balance than it had in years, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Navy doesn’t have the horses.

The program rocks and rolls when the running game is crushing everyone, and it’s not. It’s okay, but it’s not coming up with enough big plays and it’s not dominating the time of possession battle.

Navy is 3-0 this year when it runs for 200 yards, and 0-4 when it doesn’t. For all of the problems on the Memphis D, the run defense hasn’t been all that bad. It had issues with the Cincinnati ground game, but everyone does.

No one else has hit 200 on the Tigers.
