Recruiting 2021: 5 Teams Crushing It This Recruiting Season

You know who has the top 2021 recruiting classes without even looking.

If you guessed Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, and a whole slew of SEC schools, you’re right. But there are always schools who surprise in the process and come up with big, important classes that can shape a program and future conference races.

Sometimes the class looks good because of bulk signings, sometimes it’s talent, and sometimes it’s a good blend of both.

Here are five programs bringing in somewhat surprising classes to be among the best – even if they aren’t pushing Alabama – of the 2021 recruiting season.

[jwplayer cmV7bq8V]

5. Pitt Panthers

The ACC is Clemson’s show and everyone else is a guest – especially with Florida State having a rough time getting this recruiting thing going again – but North Carolina has been excellent with Mack Brown back and Miami is putting together a fantastic 2021 haul.

Suddenly, Pitt is right there knocking on the door with a potential top 5 – or better – ACC class.

Pitt usually comes up with decent classes, but it almost never gets the top tier talents who have their choice of any program. However, when you have one of the most devastating pass rushes in college football over the last few years, top defensive linemen will notice you.

2021 Pitt Schedule Analysis, Best & Worst Scenarios

It helps to pump up that Pitt is Aaron Donald’s school, and it doesn’t hurt a class when his nephew – Elliot Donald – signs on. He’s not alone with a few other fantastic prospects coming in for the D line to go along with talent for the offensive front.

Depth and bulk play a factor here. Pitt needed to load up on recruits, but there’s quality to go along with the quantity.

And, yeah, it got another Donald at defensive tackle.

The pre-spring version of the CFN 2021 rankings with a first look at all the SEC teams.

[jwplayer uDq9fI2u]

2021 SEC Rankings: Pre-Spring

SEC East

1. Georgia Bulldogs

Why To Be Happy: There’s a nice group of players returning to set the foundation for what should be a stronger year. Start with JT Daniels settling the quarterback situation, continue with RB James Cook and OT Jamaree Salyer to go along with all the high-end receivers and defensive talents returning, and most the players are there to get to the College Football Playoff.

What To Work On: The offense has to be better in the bigger games. The defense was strong all season and will be again, but the O wasn’t consistent enough, especially against Alabama, Florida, and at least on the ground, against Cincinnati.

Bottom Line: Win the SEC East, Georgia. Considering all of the big replacements being made at Alabama, there’s no reason to shoot for anything less than a conference championship.
2021 Georgia Schedule Analysis, Best & Worst Case Scenarios

2. Florida Gators

Why To Be Happy: The Gators might be losing a ton of the key 2020 parts, but several very, very nice prospects are coming in to ease the pain. Clemson RB Demarkcus Bowman was a huge recruit, as were Auburn DT Daquan Newkirk and LSU TE Arik Gilbert. Emory Jones adds more mobility to the quarterback position, and enough starters return on defense to be okay. However …

What To Work On: No, really, Kyle Pitts was Heisman-caliber good numbers-wise. Yes, part of the reason the Gators flopped against Oklahoma was the lack of the star receiver talent, and now TE Kyle Pitts and WRs Kadarius Toney and Trevon Grimes are gone.

Bottom Line: The Gators are going to reload in a hurry and could be even more dangerous if the receivers rise up right away. However, going into spring football they look like they might be a step or two behind Georgia.
2021 Florida Schedule Analysis, Best & Worst Case Scenarios

3. Missouri Tigers

Why To Be Happy: There were losses in the transfer portal, but the Tigers got plenty of wins. They might have lost star LB Nick Bolton to the NFL, but they picked up a very, very good safety-sized playmaker in Blaze Allredge from Rice. Plug him into the lineup, and with the return of tackles Kobie Whiteside and Markell Utsey for their senior-plus seasons, and now …

What To Work On: The defense has to be a whole lot stronger than it was at the end of the season. Solid at times, it couldn’t handle the bigger boys on the slate and then it all melted down over the last three games.

Bottom Line: RB Larry Rountree is gone, but almost everyone else is back on O, almost everyone is back on D, and head coach Eliah Drinkwitz had a year to get things in place. Mizzou is about to make a jump.
2021 Missouri Schedule Analysis, Best & Worst Case Scenarios

4. Kentucky Wildcats

Why To Be Happy: QB Terry Wilson might be transferring out, but the offense might be more dynamic with either Joey Gatewood or Beau Allen under center. With leading receiver Josh Ali coming back the passing game should be solid, and …

What To Work On: Kentucky loses enough good players to matter. P Max Duffy, LB Jamin Davis and CB Kelvin Joseph are just a few who’ll be missed, the O and D lines need a slew of replacements, and …

Bottom Line: Kentucky will still be Kentucky. It’ll have its style on both sides that will work just enough to be a bother. There will be just enough missing to be a contender, but no one will grind harder or better.
2021 Kentucky Schedule Analysis, Best & Worst Case Scenarios

5. Tennessee Volunteers

Why To Be Happy: Not everyone entered the transfer portal. The Vols were able to bring in Virginia Tech’s talented QB Hendon Hooker and … uhhhhh … Hooker is good. Getting Cade Mays back for the offensive line is terrific, and the defensive front returns enough veterans to be a potential plus.

What To Work On: The offense has got to start moving the ball better. It was a disaster on third downs and everything fell flat except against the weak and the sad. Also, the defense has got to start coming up with third down stops.

Bottom Line: Okay … so almost everyone is apparently entering the transfer portal, but that should change and possibly reverse now that things have settled a bit after hiring Josh Heupel. If nothing else, the offense is about to be a whole lot more fun. No matter what you think about the hire, Tennessee has a direction.
2021 Tennessee Schedule Analysis, Best & Worst Case Scenarios

6. South Carolina Gamecocks

Why To Be Happy: The program is going to get time to grow and get the young parts working, starting with RB Kevin Harris and – most likely – QB Luke Doty behind an O line that might not be all that bad. The new coaching staff has been active on the transfer portal with a whole slew of reinforcements coming in.

What To Work On: Find a passing game right away. Harris is going to be options 1, 2 and 3, but being more dangerous down the field is a must for an offense that sputtered and coughed throughout the second half of the season. The offense needs a higher-octane identity.

Bottom Line: You wanted Will Muschamp gone. Done, now the rebuild begins under Shane Beamer. There’s going to be a “no one believes in us” factor with the Gamecocks for 2021 – the pressure is off. The starting 22 should be okay with a little more help.
2021 South Carolina Schedule Analysis, Best & Worst Case Scenarios

7. Vanderbilt Commodores

Why To Be Happy: Yeah, a slew of Commodores are in the transfer portal, but most of the key ones didn’t play big roles in 2020 after being a bigger part of the 2019 team. Vandy went young, suffered through the problems, and now returns experienced in a few areas to hope for a quick improvement.

What To Work On: Scoring. The Commodores scored 21 points or fewer in eight of their nine games and 17 or fewer in seven of those. Go back to 2019 and the program has scores 17 or fewer in 13 of their last 17 games.

Bottom Line: New head coach Clark Lea has a massive task ahead of him with a total overhaul of a program that went 2-18 against FBS teams over the last two seasons.

Missouri (10-3) vs TCU (9-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why TCU Will Win

Yeah, TCU is struggling lately, but it has a way of keeping games low-scoring and not letting anything get out of hand. That’s partly because the offense is struggling, but the Horned Frog style should keep the team in the game against a Tiger squad that makes a whole lot of mistakes.

Mizzou commits way too many fouls and doesn’t force enough mistakes – TCU has to take advantage to every situation. Making everything from the free-throw line matters – the team needs to manufacture points. However …

Why Missouri Will Win

TCU is totally miserable at shooting free throws.

No, really, this is one of the worst shooting teams in America from the line, hitting just 62% of its tries and failing to even hit half of the attempts over the last two games.

That goes hand-in-hand with a Horned Frog team that struggles to score in general. If Mizzou can get out on a nice early run, that should be about enough.

The Tigers are better on the defensive boards, and they’ll have plenty of opportunities.

What’s Going To Happen

This is a weird Missouri team. It doesn’t do a whole lot of things really well, but it scores, it comes up big when it needs to, and it loses to teams that go lights out shooting in all phases.

That’s not TCU.

It takes a big offensive day to get by the Tigers, and that’s not happening from the Big 12 side.

The 2021 SEC football schedule was released. There’s anger, excitement, and a whole lot of looking ahead to what should be a full schedule again this fall as if 2020 never happened.

Here are five things about the schedule that matter including who misses the big teams from the other division, the non-conference analysis, the one big difference in this year’s slate, the winners and losers, and starting out with …

5.  Who gets the rested teams?

There was a time not all that long ago when SEC teams took an Alabamacation.

You have the Crimson Tide on the schedule? Okay … just make sure you get a week off to rest up and get ready first. In the end that time off usually didn’t matter much, but that’s changed now.

Every SEC team has one off week and one light scrimmage against an FCS or some other cream-filled pastry of a paycheck game, but this year, that easy date isn’t always coming before a key SEC date. That matters, too – sometimes it’s nice to get a few easy games to gear up.

Which current SEC college football programs are the greatest of all-time according to the UPI and USA Today Coaches final polls?

Using a ranking system taking all the AP final college football polls and assigning 25 points to the national champion, 24 for the final No. 2 team, 23 for the No. 3 team on down.

There’s no question who the elephant is in the room – it’s Alabama’s spot up top and it’s not even close. However, after 2019 and the national championship, LSU moved past Tennessee to the No. 2 all-time spot, and Georgia is now tied with the Vols.

One note on this – this is made up of current SEC programs and factoring in their histories. Obviously Texas A&M, Missouri, and others are new to the SEC world over the last few years, but all of their records count.

Again, this is based on the CFN formula. This isn’t any official ranking coming from USA TODAY or the Coaches Poll.

Missouri (10-2) vs Auburn (9-7) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Missouri Will Win

Missouri, this is the game to attack the glass offensively over and over again.

Auburn can rebound – more on that in a moment – but it’s getting murdered on the offensive boards, allowing ten or more in each of the last five games and in with of the last eight – it lost five of them.

Mizzou shoots well enough to not have to care about second chance points all that often, but it helps. On the other side, the two losses this year – Tennessee the first time around and Mississippi State – came when they got hit with threes.

The MU Tigers allowed 41% from three or less in every win, and 50% or more in those two losses. Auburn shoots a ton from three, but it’s incredibly inconsistent. However …

Why Auburn Will Win

Auburn is hitting the offensive boards, too.

Part of that comes from taking a whole lot of three pointers, but the Tigers are making up for it lately with a ton of second-chance points. They’ve come up with ten or more offensive rebounds in each of the last three games and they need those boards. However, this has to be one of those games when the threes are falling.

Auburn will keep firing and keep firing and keep firing, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Missouri leads the SEC and is one of the best teams in the nation in three point defense. This isn’t a good-shooting MU team from the outside, but it makes up for it with its tough D. getting after it on the glass. It’s the team’s fifth road game in the last five, though.

Auburn is back at home after playing three of its last four games away from Auburn arena. It’ll be a terrific battle with Mizzou’s defense coming up with the two stops it absolutely has to have late.

Auburn will need a clutch three, and it won’t get it.

Missouri (9-2) vs Tennessee (10-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Missouri Will Win

The Missouri defense is hammering everyone who wants to shoot from the outside.

The eight threes hit by South Carolina in the Mizzou win a few days ago were the most made by anyone all year against this D. That goes along with the defense as a whole that contests everything and makes everyone scratch and claw for what they can get.

Tennessee doesn’t need to shoot from three, but it’s coming off a disastrous performance form the outside in the shocking 75-49 loss to Florida a few days ago. The Vols couldn’t hit a thing, and Missouri’s defense is good enough to keep that going, but …

Why Tennessee Will Win

Tennessee has the ability to turn the lights out in a snap.

The offense did everything right in the 73-53 win over the Tigers back in December, and that’s with only shooting seven three-pointers – and making five.

The Vols are able to handle the pressure from the Tiger defense, they don’t turn the ball over, and they can play D, too. Missouri might lead the SEC in field goal defense, but no one in the conference gives up fewer points than Tennessee.

What’s Going To Happen

It seems to be all about the three for Missouri, at least on the defensive side. Tennessee hit 71% of its shots from beyond the arc, and Mississippi State hit half of its threes in the win over the Tigers. But there’s something bigger about that.

Yes, those are the only two teams to make more than 34% from three on Mizzou, and they’re also the only two teams to shoot fewer than 13 from the outside.

Everything else worked for the Vol and Bulldog offenses in the wins, but the Missouri defense will be far, far better this time around. Tennessee will pull it off at home, but it’ll be a great fight.
