Minnesota vs Nebraska Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

As long as the running game is rumbling, everything is fine.

It’s just not that hard when it comes to this team. When it controls the line – and is healthy, unlike it was against Purdue and the backs weren’t in place – forget it.

Minnesota is 5-0 when running for over 165 yards – running for 240 yards or more in all five – and 0-3 when it doesn’t. Those three games? That Purdue outlier, the Illinois D that’s among the best in college football, and at Penn State.

How’s Nebraska’s run defense? The team is 0-5 when it doesn’t keep teams to 175 yards or fewer, and those three games were against North Dakota from the FCS, Rutgers, and an Indiana team that doesn’t really run.

Minnesota is about to pound and keep pounding.

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Nebraska Will Win

The Huskers were able to throw well against Purdue, and the defense was solid in the tough 26-9 loss to Illinois.

The fire and fight are still there, and it’s going to have to come from the ground game taking over.

Minnesota might run well, and Nebraska can’t match that yard-for-yard, but it has to get more physical than it has all year against a Minnesota defensive front that’s a tad hit-or-miss.

The stats are great overall, but the Gophers are 0-3 when allowing teams to run for 160 yards or more. That’s all about sticking with the attack, and Nebraska is able to run at least four times.

Minnesota wants to control the clock, but Nebraska has to change the narrative because …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Is Casey Thompson okay? The Nebraska quarterback has an arm injury, Chubba Purdy had to step in against Illinois and is hurt, and there’s a shot Logan Smothers has to play a role. No matter what, getting the running game going and doing anything to control the clock.

It won’t happen.

Minnesota is the best team in America at converting third down chances, it’s second-best in third down stops, and the team will always seem like it’s on the field.

Minnesota vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

Minnesota is struggling.

Just when everyone jumped on board after a strong 4-0 start, the offense died because of running back injuries (that was the problem in the Purdue loss) and QB Tanner Morgan suffering a concussion (that wasn’t why the Gophers got rocked by Penn State, but it didn’t help).

All of a sudden, the running game has slowed to a crawl – even with the six yards per carry in the loss to Illinois – scoring has been a problem, and Rutgers is here for all of it.

The Scarlet Knights might have their own issues, but they’ve been a rock against the run outside of the Ohio State loss, they’re seventh in the nation overall defensively, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Minnesota Will Win

This is where the Minnesota defense has to step it up.

Purdue is good, Illinois is good, Penn State is good. The Gophers were banged up just as they had to deal with the three good teams on the slate so far – with some respect given to Michigan State – and lost because the O didn’t work. The D didn’t step up and help against the Illini and Nittany Lions, but the three takeaways against the Boilermakers kept it interesting.

The Rutgers offense is happy to give it away a few times, and last week when it didn’t give it away in the win over Indiana, it was still a struggle with just 305 yards.

This will be a grind of a game, but if the Minnesota front can stop the ground game and keep it to 140 yards, this won’t be a problem.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Rutgers is 4-0 when rushing for 140 yards and 0-3 when it doesn’t. Minnesota is 4-0 when allowing under 140 yards, and 0-3 when it doesn’t.

Rutgers won’t gain 140 rushing yards. Minnesota is still banged up, but it’ll get it right the ship with a decent enough offensive balance to go along with a good day from the D.

Minnesota vs Penn State Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Gophers need to find their pounding groove again.

They’ve got the beef up front, the tremendous backs, and the veteran quarterback to make it all go, but those backs – primarily Mohamed Ibrahim – weren’t healthy in the loss to Purdue, and it was the passing game that let the team down in the loss to Illinois.

Penn State hadn’t played anyone who could run. Auburn could sort of run, but not really. Michigan can run, and it did over and over again as it wore down the Nittany Lions with 418 rushing yards in the 41-17 win.

Even after the two losses and all of the problems, Minnesota still leads the nation in third down conversions and third down stops. It’s still the best in the nation at avoiding penalties, it’s the best in the Big Ten at controlling the clock, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Penn State Will Win

Minnesota was able to amass those lofty stats by dominating a slew of mediocre teams.

It’s not the Gophers’ fault that Colorado is bad at college football this year or that Michigan State couldn’t seem to do anything right, but they got to 4-0 without beating a team that will – mostly likely – finish with a winning record.

Purdue and Illinois were the first real tests, and Minnesota failed.

Penn State might have problems on third downs against this D, but the other side of the ball should hold up just fine, especially against the Gopher passing attack.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Which Minnesota team will show up?

Will it be the one that couldn’t do anything wrong in East Lansing in the dominant win over Michigan State, or will it be the one that couldn’t get going in Champaign in the frustrating loss to Illinois?

Besides those being the games against the two best teams on the slate so far, there was one other problem – the turnovers. Minnesota turned it over three times in the first four games and six times – all interceptions – in the last two.

Penn State will struggle, and it’ll get hammered on for the second week in a row. A decent offensive balance and +2 turnover margin will be the difference.

Minnesota vs Illinois Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Gophers have their guy back.

To put it kindly, the 20-10 loss to Purdue didn’t reflect the program’s best work, but the clunker was overdue.

The team was playing at a high-level for four games, and then it lost its energy against the Boilermakers with star RB Mohamed Ibrahim out hurt. Now he’s back and ready to go.

Illinois might not be pretty, but the system works. Run, run more, play tough defense, rely on the passing game to hit the short throws, repeat. QB Tommy DeVito, though, is questionable with an ankle injury against the nation’s best defense. Even if everything is right with him, there won’t be anything happening down the field.

Granted, the Gopher defense has’t exactly dealt with the Alabamas and Ohio States of the college offense world, but it’s still fabulous allowing just 222 yards per game.

The offense leads the country in time of possession keeping the ball for 38 minutes per game, and overall, Minnesota – thanks to Ibrahim – should be able to beat Illinois at its own game.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Illinois Will Win

Minnesota is going to want to come in and get tough. That’s not going to work against this group.

Who’s playing with more confidence right now than the Illinois defense? It gave up one late touchdown drive to Indiana in the 23-20 loss, and that’s been about it.

The defense stuffed Virginia in a 24-3 win, got in a little work in the FCS paycheck game, and then basically got Paul Chryst fired with a dominant performance against Wisconsin.

You and your sewing circle could keep Iowa to six points, but throw that 9-6 win on the pile of great defensive games. Ever since the opener against Wyoming the Illini are allowing fewer than two yards per carry.

Again, though …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota is playing better defense.

Illinois went to Madison and out-Wisconsined, Wisconsin. Minnesota is going to out-Illinois, Illinois.

Veteran quarterback Tanner Morgan will come up with a few more competitions, the running game will have far more juice this week, and the defense that did its share of the heavy lifting against Purdue will keep it going.

The Gophers won’t have turnover issues this week, the D will be great on third downs, and they’ll right the ship as they take back control of the Big Ten West.

It’s an Illinois game, though. Points will be scarce.
