Michigan State bolsters nine academic All-Americans

9 Spartans have earned academic All-American status

As the 2024-25 athletic calendar is set to soon begin, the final close to the 2023-24 athletic calendar has come to a close. With the close of 2023-24, Michigan State athletics has announced which Spartans have earned academic All-American status.

Of the nine, they come from eight different sports including baseball, men’s and women’s track & field, field hockey, men’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s golf.

Michigan State women’s golf releases 2024-25 schedule

After an outstanding season in 2023-24, see what the Spartans have on tap in 2024-25

Michigan State women’s golf is gearing up for the upcoming season. The Spartans will look to follow a season that saw them finish second in the Big Ten and tie for 17th at the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship.

Led by All-American Katie Lu, Michigan State will look to continue their success in 2024-25. Check out what the upcoming season has on tap for the women’s golf team:

Spartan Tori Franklin heading to 2024 Summer Olympics

Another Spartan is heading to the Paris Olympics:

Another member of the Michigan State community will be heading to Paris, France, for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Tori Franklin will be representing the United States in the triple jump. The former Spartan finished third in the triple jump with a 13.72m leap.

Franklin also competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, finishing 25th.

In 2022, she earned bronze at the World Championships to become the first American woman to medal in the triple jump at a World Championship.

Watch Red Wings goalie speak about MSU goalie Trey Augustine

Alex Lyon spoke about MSU goaltender Trey Augustine on a recent podcast:

Michigan State has one of the best goalies in college hockey with Trey Augustine patrolling the crease for the green and white. Augustine had an outstanding freshman season with MSU and will now be gearing up for a sophomore year with the team.

Aside from MSU, Augustine was drafted 41st overall in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He has also had an outstanding career with Team USA, winning a World Juniors gold medal and competing at the 2024 IIHF World Championship with NHL caliber players.

At the World Championship, Augustine was able to team up with Red Wings netminder Alex Lyon, who took the Spartan under his wing.

Michigan State golfer Ashton McCulloch eyes to make the cut at U.S. Open

Spartan Ashton McCulloch is eyeing the cut at the U.S. Open

Michigan State rising senior Ashton McCulloch has gotten the honor of playing at the US Open in 2024 after qualifying in his home country of Canada.

In round one, with tough conditions at Pinehurst No. 2, McCulloch shot a 75 (+5). While on surface, it doesn’t feel like a good round, McCulloch is firmly in the mix to make the cut, which will fall around the +3 or +4 marker.

He is set to tee off at 2:42 p.m. EST.

Michigan State golfer Ashton McCulloch qualifies for U.S. Open

A Spartan golfer has qualified for the U.S. Open

In the golf world, Monday was known to the sport as, “the longest day in golf.” The moniker referred to the qualification process for the United States Open. With qualifiers happening all over the world, golfers both experienced and amateur were looking for their entry into the US Open.

One Spartan, Ashton McCulloch, fresh off of an appearance at the RBC-Canadian Open and his junior season at MSU, has qualified for the US Open.

McCulloch fired a -8 day to finish in seventh place, securing his spot at the major.

The U.S. Open will take place at Pinehurst No. 2 from June 13-16.

Michigan State tennis makes NCAA Tournament, headed east

Michigan State tennis is headed to the NCAA Tournament

Michigan State’s tennis has gone under an outstanding revelation under head coach Harry Jadun’s two year tenure in East Lansing. The Spartans are one of the best teams in the Big Ten and a potential threat on the national level.

Now, in 2023-24, the Spartans are headed to the NCAA Tournament, where the team will head to Boston to play against Denver, who is undefeated on the season.

Michigan State softball is getting set to conclude their 2024 regular season. While it has not been the best season for the Spartans, the program has shown continued improvements in Sharonda McDonald-Kelley’s second season as head coach.

Alabama joins Michigan State in exclusive NCAA club

With a final four appearance, Alabama joins Michigan State in an exclusive club:

Alabama defeated Clemson in an Elite 8 NCAA Tournament matchup on Saturday night, clinching a spot in the 2024 Final Four for the first time in the school’s history. With an appearance in the basketball final four, adding to the Crimson Tide’s football final four appearance, Alabama has joined Michigan State in an exclusive club.

Since the inception of the College Football Playoff, only one school had made the final four in both football and basketball during the same year. That was the Spartans in 2015, and now Alabama in 2024.

Michigan State soccer defeats Michigan in East Lansing

MSU took down Michigan on the pitch on Friday night

The Michigan State soccer program program has made significant strides under Damon Rensing and have become a consistent program in the Big Ten.

As the team prepares for their 2024 season, they are going through a spring schedule to better enhance themselves. Within that spring schedule, the Spartans welcomed in their rivals, Michigan.

Michigan State defeated Michigan on the pitch, 3-0.
