  • @ USC Upstate: W 13-6
  • @ Gardner-Webb: L 7-3
  • @ Presbyterian College: L 8-6

Michigan State will head to Charleston, South Carolina next weekend for four games, starting the annual South Carolina spring break swing:

Michigan State hockey gets Big Ten Tournament draw

The postseason is here and MSU hockey has received their Big Ten Tournament draw:

The regular season is officially over and the first year of the Adam Nightingale era in East Lansing is almost complete. Michigan State turned many heads this season, and were one of the biggest surprises in the nation.

MSU finished the regular season 16-16-2, much improved from what has previously been the case in East Lansing. Now, the Spartans look to postseason play, and the team looks to punch their ticket into the NCAA Tournament.

The first step, and most important, is winning a series in the Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans are set to face off against Notre Dame on the road, in South Bend, as the 5-seed.

Michigan State athletics releases official statement

The MSU athletics department has released an official statement, updating the status of the school’s sports teams:

Michigan State athletics has released an official announcement on the status of the school’s athletics following the horrific events that happened on Monday night.

The statement reads:

After discussions with mental health professionals and university leadership, and in consultation with Spartan student-athletes and staff, Michigan State athletics will resume competition this weekend, both at home and on the road. Information remains subject to change.

“The safety and physical and mental well-being of our students and staff is the primary focus of Michigan State athletics,” said MSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Alan Haller. “In consultation with mental health professionals and in conversations with our student-athletes it became apparent that a return to practice and competition is a crucial part of their recovery. Student-athletes were given an active voice in the decision to return to competition, as well as the autonomy to make their own individual choices about participation.

“Athletics can be a rallying point for a community in need of healing, a fact many of our student-athletes have mentioned to me. The opportunity to represent our entire community has never felt greater. I also recognize that everyone grieves in their own unique manner, and there are some who aren’t ready to return to athletic events. Those feelings are incredibly valid, and as Coach Izzo so eloquently stated last night, I hope that we will all focus on taking care of one another.”

Michigan State hockey senior Jagger Joshua says Ohio State player used racial slurs towards him

Michigan State hockey’s Jagger Joshua says Ohio State player used racial slurs towards him

On Monday evening, Michigan State hockey senior Jagger Joshua released a statement on his Twitter where he claimed that an Ohio State player used a racial slur multiple times during MSU’s Nov. 11 match-up against the Buckeyes.

According to Joshua, the official in the game had heard the slur and issued a game misconduct penalty to the player. Nathaniel Bott of the Lansing State Journal noted that one Ohio State player, Kamil Sadlocha, received a game misconduct penalty at the 10:39 mark in the second period of the aforementioned game.

“The inaction has left me feeling confused and pessimistic about the movement of diversity within hockey culture,” Joshua said in his statement. “The ignorance of racism does not belong in our game, and I feel that I need to make people aware that this incident occurred. Because without acknowledgement, the problem gets worse.”

Joshua said that the Big Ten conducted an investigation about the incident but no further action has been taken by the conference.

“Michigan State Athletics stands with Jagger Joshua, and commends him for having the courage to speak up against racial injustice,” MSU Athletics Director Alan Haller said in a statement Monday evening. “As a department, we are committed to providing opportunities for all student-athletes to compete in a space free from discrimination, racism or hate.”

“At Michigan State, we are committed to a safe and welcoming space for our student-athletes,” MSU hockey coach Adam Nightingale said. “It is important to me that all student athletes feel comfortable and supported in our locker room and in our program. I am proud to have Jagger Joshua on our team.”
