As the third day of padded practices wraps up for the New Orleans Saints Thursday acted as a microcosm of what the first week and a half of camps have been as a whole. The Saints offense and defense went back-and-forth in a variety of drills, mostly for focus on third downs. Defensive players made spectacular plays in one on ones while receivers put together explosive moments in team drills. It was truly a balanced practice to wrap up the eighth day at Saints camp; here are our key observations:

After an event full day at New Orleans Saints training camp on Wednesday the team will retake the field today hoping that calmer heads will prevail. After a brief scuffle led to the removal of offensive lineman Trevor Penning and defensive lineman Malcolm Roach, the Saints will head into Thursday’s training camp practice looking to strike a better balance of constructive aggression and competition. While painting will draw our eyes there are a few players that will be watching during today’s session including yesterday’s bigger story with the return of safety Tyrann Mathieu.

As NFL training camps kicked off around the league, the New Orleans Saints provided one of the biggest surprises with the return of All-Pro wide receiver Michael Thomas. Thomas was listed on the physically unable to perform list (PUP) less than a week ago, but found his way out to catching passes. While that story takes the cake for biggest surprise, here are several key observations from camp day one.

Michael Thomas says ‘it’s a blessing’ to be back at Saints practice

Michael Thomas says ‘it’s a blessing’ to be back at Saints practice, praises Jameis Winston and new teammate Chris Olave:

There isn’t a bigger news story surrounding the start of New Orleans Saints training camp than the return of Michael Thomas, but no one appreciated the gravity of the situation more than the man himself.

“I’m at a loss for words,” Thomas said after his first day of practice in more than a year, musing on his first experience with a major injury and the frustrating process that followed. “It’s a blessing to be out there with the guys.”

Thomas has been activated from the PUP list, which means he’s passed his physical but may not be back to full health just yet. And that was reflected in his workload on Wednesday; despite moving well without a limp or hitch in his step, Thomas was held out of full team drills after fully participating in the activities leading up to them. So the Saints will remain cautious and avoid throwing him into anything before his body can handle it. That’s smart.

Still, you can’t help but be encouraged by this progress. This time last year Thomas was away from the team altogether, dodging their phone calls and tweeting recklessly. Things are in a whole other universe now. Thomas is in lockstep with the Saints’ doctors and coaches, putting in work on the practice field and praising his quarterback and new teammates.

“Jameis is the ultimate competitor,” Thomas said during his post-practice press conference. “He always brings that energy and passion, and we feed off that.” Thomas has caught just one pass from Winston during a game, so it’s great to see him so active in camp right away. The more time those two can put in together this summer, the better off their connection will be in the fall.

When asked about rookie wideout Chris Olave, Thomas was all smiles — he spoke about his yearslong relationship with his fellow former Buckeye, who sought him out as a mentor coming out of Ohio State. The pair trained together before the 2022 NFL draft and met up again over the summer after Olave landed with New Orleans. As Thomas explained, “It’s an honor. I know the culture he came from, I know the environment he came from. I know the guys that coached him.”

So things are trending up with Thomas. Of course we aren’t out of the woods yet; he isn’t participating in team drills, and obviously we need to see how his body holds up in full-contact practices and games later on down the road. It’s going to be a process. But you couldn’t ask for a much better start. Let’s see what’s next.

Michael Thomas activated from Saints PUP list, already busy in practice

The New Orleans Saints activated WR Michael Thomas from their physically unable to perform list, and he’s already catching passes in practice:

The New Orleans Saints brain trust weren’t kidding when they said star receiver Michael Thomas would be coming off of the physically unable to perform (PUP) list soon — head coach Dennis Allen echoed comments from general manager Mickey Loomis setting that expectation on Tuesday, and Thomas was busy at work the next day.

The team is activating him from the PUP list. Thomas was seen taking snaps and catching passes in Wednesday’s first training camp practice session, participating in individual drills and running routes against air (doing everything but team drills). It’s a welcome sight after a nearly two-year absence stemming from Thomas’ frustrating ankle injury in the 2020 season-opener, delayed by a setback in an already-postponed surgery last summer.

But he’s been diligent in his recovery and working to get back up to speed, and now that effort is paying off. The Saints are betting on Thomas returning to form as one of the game’s best receivers — envisioning a three-pronged approach featuring rookie first round pick Chris Olave, fan-favorite free agent pickup Jarvis Landry, and Thomas taking the tip of the spear. That’s a strong trio for Jameis Winston to work with, and he’s also got last year’s leading receivers (Marquez Callaway, Deonte Harty, and Tre’Quan Smith) at his disposal.

Still, a lot hinges on Thomas and the health of his ankle. The more reps he’s able to put in during practice, the stronger his trust in the surgically-repaired joint will be, and that allows him to take on a bigger role during the season. Success in the fall starts with hard work in the summer.

Dennis Allen echoes Saints’ optimism on Michael Thomas’ progress

It has been a long road since New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas sustained an ankle injury in the first game of the 2020 season. Since then, he’s undergone two surgeries, missed the 2021 season, and heads into training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. However, the feeling within the Saints facility on Tuesday evening was one of palpable optimism.

“I had a great conversation with (Thomas) today,” said head coach Dennis Allen. “We all feel like it won’t be very long before we see him back out on the practice field.” Allen’s optimism echoed that of general manager Mickey Loomis who noted “soon” as the timeline for the All-Pro receiver’s return.

Allen also said that the timeline for Thomas’s return would be “soon” and that they feel good about his progress, further supporting Loomis’s comments. Last year, without Thomas available, the Saints failed to produce an 800-yard receiver and fell to the bottom of the league in passing yardage. This accompanied a season where the team started four different quarterbacks and threw the third fewest passes in the NFL.

The last time Thomas was healthy and played a full season for the Saints, he broke Marvin Harrison’s long-standing single-season receptions record. Thomas reeled in 149 catches for 1,725 receiving yards and 9 touchdown catches. While getting that level of production back in 2022 is both unlikely and to a point unnecessary following the additions of wideouts Jarvis Landry and Chris Olave, getting Thomas back to even his 2016 level of production would be a massive win for the Saints.
