Miami vs Central Connecticut State Game Preview

Why Central Connecticut State Will Win

Can the Blue Devils catch the Hurricanes while they’re really, really down?

The ACC season kicks in next week with Virginia, and Miami could use any sort of break after getting rocked by Alabama and Michigan State and struggling against Appalachian State.

The Canes can’t move the ball as well as they should. There’s little to no running game, there’s no ball control, and the defense isn’t picking up the slack.

Central Connecticut State is fantastic at controlling the game by hanging on to the ball for over 38 minutes per game. It doesn’t turn the ball over, the run D has been great, and …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami Will Win

There isn’t enough offense to keep up, and the secondary is about to get bombed on.

Miami will obviously use this game as a tune-up, and it needs it.

The offensive line has to prove it can consistently block someone and the running backs have to know what it’s like to have a hole to run through.

As long as there aren’t any big turnovers, Miami should be able to do whatever it wants against this D.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Normally this would be the game to get some rest, see what the 2s and 3s can do, and just enjoy the scrimmage.

Miami needs this just to feel good about itself, if only for a moment.

It’s not going to play D’Eriq King any more than it has to, but the team isn’t going to take it easy. Beating Central Connecticut State won’t prove anything, but the team needs to have a little fun.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Michigan State (2-0) vs Miami (1-1) Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

Miami needs its defensive front to dominate to have any sort of a chance in this, but the Spartans have been brilliant so far on the lines.

The offensive front isn’t allowing much pressure in the backfield, the ground game has been rolling with 300 yards per game, and there weren’t any blips against Northwestern and Youngstown State.

RB Kenneth Walker dominated Northwestern, and he wasn’t needed much last week – he should be rested and ready to go. QB Payton Thorne was wonderful last week with the big plays kicking in, and he’ll press a Hurricane secondary that’s been getting bombed on way too easily.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami Will Win

Even with the blowout loss to Alabama – and the tight battle against a good Appalachian State – the Hurricane line is getting into the backfield with a whole lot of tackles for loss.

Yes, the Spartan offensive front has been great, but it also hasn’t been pushed or tested so far. If the Canes can hold on against the run – they haven’t been awful over the first two games – they should be able to make the Spartans press a bit. As good as Thorne has been, he hasn’t needed to make any big key throws yet.

On the other side, for all of the good things Michigan State has done defensively, it’s been lousy on third downs. Miami doesn’t care about the time of possession battle, but this might be the game to control the tempo and clock.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Miami is overdue to start playing a whole lot better, but it’s hard to do anything big against Alabama and an Appalachian State team that might be the best in the Sun Belt.

Michigan State is the real deal, but it’s going to be pressed far more than it was against Northwestern. Miami’s defensive front will keep the team in the game, but there won’t be enough consistency to the offense and the secondary will give up two big plays to kill a few momentum swings.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Miami (0-1) vs Appalachian State (1-0) Game Preview

Why Appalachian State Will Win

Shhhhhhhh. While everyone is all into the Coastal Carolina thing, and Louisiana is still getting love from the polls, Appalachian State might just be the best team in the Sun Belt.

East Carolina is a dangerous offensive team with a whole lot of experienced weapons. It threw well against the Mountaineers last Saturday, but it didn’t matter – App State won 33-19 because of an unstoppable offensive balance.

The D gave up just nine points until the game was over – the Mountaineers were up 33-9 before ECU put up a few late scores – and the O roared with a huge day from the rushing attack and a solid day from former Clemson/Duke QB Chase Brice.

Miami is coming off a beating from Alabama, and up next is Michigan State. This might not be a letdown game, but if it doesn’t bring the full fight, there’s going to be a problem.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami Will Win

Take the Alabama game, ball it up, and throw it away – it’s Alabama. You’re supposed to lose 44-13.

All things considered, D’Eriq King wasn’t bad. He threw two picks as he and the O had to press, but he was able to hit the midrange passes and looked just fine after his knee injury.

Also lost in the blowout was that the D line did a decent job. It got into the backfield for ten tackles for loss, it held its own against the running game, and … Alabama. This is still a good Miami team.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Could Miami not tackle in the secondary because it’s Alabama, or could it not tackle because it had a hard time tackling?

Appalachian State doesn’t care.

The Mountaineers are going to run well – Nate Noel and Cameron Peoples each took off for 100 yards – and the defense will keep the Hurricane offense from taking over the game. Everything is there for the upset, but …

Chase Brice. He had a massive problem with interceptions at Duke, and he threw one last week. He’ll be under pressure from the Hurricane D, he’ll throw a few picks, the Turnover Chain will come out, and that will be just enough for Miami to get out alive.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Alabama (0-0) vs Miami (0-0) Game Preview

Why Alabama Will Win

The linebackers. America, welcome to what might be the best position unit in all of college football.

Bama obviously has talent across the board, and over the last few years the wide receivers were the superstars, but the defensive side has the main men in 2021 with four future NFL starters in the linebacking corps.

The Miami offense improved by leaps and bounds in 2020 after a disastrous run in 2019, and most of it was due to QB D’Eriq King. Back from a knee injury suffered at the end of last season, he’s everything to the Hurricane offense, and Bama has the D to keep him in check.

The Canes are going to be good on the offensive line, and there are plenty of weapons, but there won’t be too many problems as long as those Tide linebackers make sure King is a pocket passer and keep him from taking off.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions For Every Game

Why Miami Will Win

King has to be the best player on the field – and he might be.

Of course Miami knows Alabama wants to keep No. 1 from running – there aren’t any limitations on King’s knee – but he’s been around long enough to have seen it all. He’s not going to force anything, and he’s not going to make the big mistakes that could quickly end this with good Tide field position and easy scores.

King is the old veteran in this while his counterpart on the other side – Bryce Young – has all the pressure in the world to be amazing right out of the gate.

The Miami defense might be breaking in a slew of new parts, but the secondary is going to be great thanks to a pass rush that should be among the best in the ACC.

As talented as the Bama offense is, it’s still replacing offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, Mac Jones, Najee Harris, DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, and three offensive linemen. The Canes have the athleticism and speed to mess up the new guys.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

The last time these two met, George Teague came up with one of the greatest defensive plays in national championship history for a Crimson Tide D that dominated Miami 34-13 in the 1993 Sugar Bowl.

You want real dominance? Try Alabama in season openers.

The last loss was to UCLA back in 2001, and ever since beating Kent State in 2011, Nick Saban’s teams have faced Michigan, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Wisconsin, USC, Florida State, Louisville, Duke, and Missouri.

9-0, all wins by double-digits, and the combined score of those nine victories … 351-113, or an average of 39-12.5. You have to go back to 2006 – a 25-17 win over Hawaii – for an Alabama season opener to be close.

Miami might be the second-best team in the ACC by the time the season is done – or at least in the top four – but even this rebuilt Alabama team is at a whole other level.

The Tide offense will be terrific, but it’ll be the defense that steals the show in Atlanta.

ACC Preseason Rankings: CFN College Football Preview 2021

The College Football News 2021 ACC preseason rankings along with a quick take on every team.

The College Football News 2021 ACC preseason rankings along with a quick take on every team.

This is NOT a ranking of where the teams are going to finish. This is based on how good we think the ACC teams are going into the 2021 season.

2021 CFN ACC Preseason Rankings: Atlantic

1. Clemson Tigers

Quick Take: If your concern is the inexperience of QB DJ Uiagalelei and a rotation of top-shelf running back talent to overcome the loss of Travis Etienne, you’re going to be okay. The defense is going to be a killer to make up for any and all concerns on the other side.
Clemson Preview | Schedule

2. NC State Wolfpack

Quick Take: This should be among the ACC’s most interesting X factors. The defensive back seven is as strong as any outside of Clemson’s, but the lines on both sides have to terrific. If they are, this is a dangerous team that should do a whole lot of damage.
NC State Preview | Schedule

3. Boston College Eagles

Quick Take: The BC offense was transformed last season and now it should dominate – at least through the air. The ground game is iffy – to be kind – but QB Phil Jurkovec and WR Zay Flowers will put on a show.
BC Preview | Schedule

4. Louisville Cardinals

Quick Take: The defense has talent and experience to be a whole lot better, and Malik Cunningham should be a difference-making veteran quarterback. It’ll be a bounce-back year, but it’ll still be a grind with a tough slate.
Louisville Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532385]

5. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Quick Take: You know exactly what you’re getting. The Demon Deacons will never be outcoached, the offense will be fast and fun, and every game will be a shootout. To sound cliché, it’s the type of team that can beat anyone on the right day, but without the high-end talent to take anyone lightly.
Wake Forest Preview | Schedule

6. Florida State Seminoles

Quick Take: Where are the guys? Where are all the superstar FSU NFL prospects? The linebacking corps will be terrific and the ground game should start to work like it’s supposed to under Mike Norvell, but the O is all about the pop and explosion – that might take a bit.
FSU Preview | Schedule

7. Syracuse Orange

Quick Take: It’s just this simple – can the Orange O line block anyone? It hasn’t been able to do that for a few years, but the skill parts are good enough to make some noise if they get a little time to work.
Syracuse Preview | Schedule

2021 CFN All-ACC Team | 2021 ACC Top 30 Players

2021 Preseason CFN ACC Offensive Player of the Year

QB DJ Uiagalelei, Soph. Clemson

North Carolina QB Sam Howell could very easily be here, and the hope is for Clemson WR Justyn Ross and Miami QB D’Eriq King to be healthy enough to be in the mix for the ACC Offensive Player of the Year honor, but …

Uiagalelei is a special talent.

It’s putting too much pressure on the guy to step in right away and be what Trevor Lawrence has been for the Tigers over the last three years, but … he’s good enough to step in right away and be what Trevor Lawrence has been for the Tigers over the last three years.

The 6-4, 250-pound former super-recruit came through when Lawrence was out in the middle of the season, throwing for 342 yards against Boston College and 439 against Notre Dame – and now he should do that on a regular basis. He’s got the size, the arm, the mobility, and the team around him to be the big man on the ACC campus.

2021 Preseason CFN ACC Defensive Player of the Year

DT Bryan Bresee, Soph. Clemson

The next great Clemson defensive tackle was expected to be good right away after coming to campus as the 2020 No. 1 recruit in the nation, and he didn’t disappoint as one of the ACC’s best interior linemen.

The 6-5, 300-pounder was a bit banged up at times, but he was still steady throughout the year as a tough presence and quick enough to come up with 33 tackles with four sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss – and he’s just scratching the surface.

Too quick, too athletic, and with the NFL size – and the ability to get a bit bigger and stronger – he finished last year with a strong game against Ohio State and now should be an even more dominant force.

Miami Hurricanes College Football Preview 2021: Offense

It wasn’t amazing, but the offense was far better after closing out the 2019 season with 227 yards in a 14-0 bowl loss to Louisiana Tech. Having QB D’Eriq King around helped, and new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee was. spark, but the attack still didn’t attack like it was should’ve and it couldn’t sustain any consistency with the ground game.

The O averaged 440 yards and 34 points per game, but the production came against a whole lot of mediocre teams. That’s the deal, though. The ACC doesn’t have a ton of killers – the Canes were stuffed by Clemson – and it just has to find something that keeps on working as long as King is okay.

King is still trying to come back from a torn ACL suffered in the Cheez-It Bowl loss to Oklahoma State, but before that he threw for 2,686 yards and 23 touchdowns and ran for 538 yards.

He was exactly what the Canes needed after a shuffling quarterback situation, but now the spotlight is on freshman Tyler Van Dyke. The 6-4, 224-pound freshman has to be ready to roll if King isn’t 100%.

Key target TE Brevin Jordan is done, but 6-5, 245-pound junior Will Mallory is a strong receiving option to go along with all the veteran receivers. The top wideouts are back, starting with leading man Mike Harley and juniors Mark Pope and Dee Wiggins.

There are plenty of big play and emerging targets to work in – getting Charleston Rambo from Oklahoma helps – no matter who’s under center.

It was a weird year for the offensive line. It started out 2020 by blasting away on UAB for 337 rushing yards, but it struggled the rest of the way at keeping defenses out of the backfield. There’s size and talent returning after a few parts were out of the mix last year. More than anything else, there should be more cohesion after the right five are set in fall camp.

It isn’t a deep group of running backs, but the Canes have three in what should be a great rotation. King is the most dangerous rusher if healthy, but Cam’Ron Harris is coming off a team leading 643-yard, ten touchdown season, second-year freshman Donald Chaney appears ready to explode, and Donald Chaney showed flashes in his first year.
