Former Gator Ben Shelton’s results through two rounds at Wimbledon

Former Gator and world No. 14 Ben Shelton is headed to the third round at Wimbledon, but it hasn’t been easy by any means.

Ben Shelton has been climbing up the world rankings since he left the University of Florida two years ago to begin his pro career, and he entered the 2024 Wimbledon Championships as the No. 14 seed.

The former Gator advanced to the third round of play after defeating South African Lloyd Harris in five sets on Thursday, with a scoreline of 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (7/5), 6-3, 7-6 (10/7). Shelton defeated 23-year-old Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci in the first round, also needing a final set tiebreaker.

Shelton egged on the Americans in the crowd during the final set tiebreak, earning chants of “USA! USA! USA!” on the fourth of July. Those same fans and Shelton) erupted when Harris sent a backhand wide to close things out.

Shelton didn’t have his best stuff early on. He wasn’t using his power to serve as much as he needed to and relied on a shaky drop shot too frequently. Sticking to his game paid off in the end, as Shelton improved in the final sets.

Ben Shelton’s next Wimbledon opponent

Shelton’s third-round matchup is Canadian Denis Shapovalov, who is currently ranked 120th with a protected ranking of 27th.

Shapovalov made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon last year, but he lost while playing with a hurt knee. He withdrew from his next tournament and spent the rest of the year recovering from the injury. Despite two tournament wins this year, Shapovalov has put together a disappointing 12-15 record in 2024.

Shelton is chasing another deep run on the Grand Slam stage after making the semifinals of the 2023 US Open.

Ohio State men’s tennis doubles team of Robert Cash and JJ Tracy receive U.S. Wildcard invite

Cash and Tracy to team up again at the next level in the Big Apple! #GoBucks

Fresh off of their national championship in men’s doubles, Ohio State men’s tennis duo of Robert Cash and JJ Tracy have received a main draw wildcard to participate in this summer’s U.S. Open.

The announcement came from the USTA on Thursday and keeps with the tradition of trying to grow tennis in the U.S. by extending invites to college national champions in singles and doubles.

Cash and Tracy won the doubles national championship by winning a super tiebreaker against a pair from Florida State, making it two straight years OSU has won the doubles title.

The U.S. Open will take place from Monday, Aug. 4 through Sunday, Sept. 8, and now you’ll have a little more Scarlet and Gray to root for.

WATCH: The moment Robert Cash and JJ Tracy win the men’s double national title

WATCH the clinching moment! #GoBucks

If you haven’t heard the news, there’s a new national title winning team at Ohio State, and it comes from the men’s tennis doubles duo of Robert Cash and JJ Tracy.

The pair had to come from behind to knock out the doubles team from Florida State, but did it by dominating the second set, 6-0, then winning the super tiebreak rather handily to bring home the second-straight doubles national title for the Scarlet and Gray.

The winning-clinching point wasn’t anything fancy, but it did the job. In case you missed it, here is the moment Cash and Tracy took home the title by covering the line and volleying the ball down the line for the win.

Congrats to the pair, and congrats to Ohio State for one whale of a season.

Ohio State’s Robert Cash, JJ Tracy win doubles national championship

National champions! #GoBucks

For the second year in a row, an Ohio State doubles team has hoisted the national championship trophy.

Last season, it was Andrew Lutschaunig and James Trotter who won five matches in five days to take home the hardware, and this season, it was Robert Cash and JJ Tracy that repeated the feat.

It didn’t start out to great for the duo against the Florida State tandem of Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous Karpenschif. The Seminole pair took the first set, 7-5 meaning it would be a comeback affair for the Scarlet and Gray.

But come back they did.

Facing major disappointment and defeat, Cash and Tracy dominated the second set, winning 6-0 to force the super tiebreaker. Both teams had their moments, but OSU was able to go up 4-1 early in the tiebreaker to set the tone and held on to win the title.

The NCAA championships didn’t go quite as well as the Ohio State men’s tennis team would want, but finishing things off with a national championship in doubles give the program something to hand its hat on.

Congrats to the pair.

Ohio State doubles team to play for national championship

Going for it all! #GoBucks

Despite a somewhat disappointing NCAA Championships for the Ohio State men’s tennis team, there’s still a reason to celebrate and watch. That’s because the doubles team of Robert Cash and JJ Tracy beat the sizzling hot Louisville doubles team of Etienne Donnet and Natan Rodrigues in a hard fought 6-2, 4-6, 12-10 match in the semifinals and now advance for a shot to play for all the marbles.

The Cardinals’ pair took out the No. 1 seed enroute to giving the two Buckeyes all they could handle on Friday.

It’s the third consecutive season an Ohio State doubles pair has played for the national championship. In 2022, it was Cash and Matej Vocel who lost a three-setter, and in 2023, Andrew Lutschaunig and James Trotter won the whole enchilada. Now Cash and Tracy will try to put a little Scarlet and Gray flair on the doubles trophy for the second year in a row.

The duo will put everything on the line Saturday vs. Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous Karpenschif of Florida State. Match time is approximately 12:30 p.m. ET.

Ohio State’s Robert Cash and JJ Tracy advance to doubles semifinals of NCAAs

Moving on to the semis! #GoBucks

The NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships are winding down, and unfortunately, most everyone wearing Scarlet and Gray are no longer around. The No. 1 OSU men’s team was knocked out of the team championship in the semifinals by TCU, and that was followed by JJ Tracy and Jack Anthrop getting bounced in the quarterfinals of the singles competition.

However, there is still one thing to root for and it’s in the men’s doubles championship. That’s because No. 4 seeded Tracy and Robert Cash advanced to the semifinals in Stillwater, Ok on Thursday.

The pair have been impressive thus far and have yet to drop a set. That continued on Thursday with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Arkansas pair, Bozo Barun and Jared Horwood.

Cash and Tracy will now take on Louisville’s Etienne Donnet and Natan Rodrigues who are also on a roll after knocking out the No. 1 seeded pair, Garrett Johns and Pedro Rodenas of Duke, in the first round. That match will be on Friday.

We’ll have the result of that match when it concludes, so check back later on Friday.

Ohio State men’s tennis players Jack Antrhop, JJ Tracy lose in NCAA quarterfinals

Not the ending either wanted, but what a season for both. #GoBucks

Coming into Thursday, Ohio State had two men’s tennis players still alive out of the eight still playing in the NCAA Championships out in Stillwater, Oklahoma. At the end of the day, the Buckeyes have none left in the semifinal singles.

Both Jack Anthrop and JJ Tracy were trying to punch their tickets to the final four, but both came up short. Anthrop fell in straight-sets to Michigan State’s Ozan Baris, 4-6, 1-6, while Tracy lost a hard-fought three-setter to Columbia’s Michael Zheng, 6-2, 5-7, 3-6.

For Tracy, it will be curtains for his Ohio State career, but Anthrop should be back to give it another run on the banks of the Olentangy. Tracy ended the year with 74 wins on the year, while Anthrop finishes the season with a 41-6 record. As good as this year was for the Buckeyes, the ending was a bit disappointing with the team getting bounced from the NCAA Tournament by TCU in the semifinals, and none of the singles players making it to the last four.

There is, however, one more thing to root for with Ohio State men’s tennis because Tracy and Robert Cash advanced to the semifinals in the doubles championships, and are still working on bringing some hardware home.

Ohio State men’s tennis has two advance to NCAA quarterfinals

Cheer on two Buckeyes in the final eight of the NCAA Championships. #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s tennis team was the No. 1 ranked squad for much of the year, and now we are seeing why. Despite being shocked by No 4 TCU and knocked out of the NCAA Tournament, the individual championships are going well. So well in fact, that OSU has two players that have advanced into the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships as a part of the final eight players still alive in the bracket.

Both JJ Tracy and Jack Anthrop have handled their business rather handily so far and are still alive in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Tracy beat Shunsuke of Tennessee in a straight-set, 6-3, 6-4 victory on Wednesday, while Anthrop handled Dylan Dietrich in a more difficult match, but still in straight-sets, 7-5, 7-6.

Both will be in action on Thursday with Anthrop taking on another Big Ten competitor, Michigan State’s Ozan Baris, and Tracy battling Michael Zhang of Columbia. Matches get underway at 11 a.m. ET, so follow along and root for both to advance to the semifinals.

Ohio State men’s tennis falls to TCU, knocked out of NCAA Tournament

Not the way OSU wanted to end things. #GoBucks

The No. 1 Ohio State men’s tennis team started strong against No. 4 TCU but faltered and fell into a hole that was too big to climb out of in a NCAA Tournament semifinal on Saturday. The loss ends the Buckeyes’ latest journey to try and win an outdoor title despite coming so achingly close several times under head coach Ty Tucker.

The Buckeyes got the doubles point to get on the board and take the early lead at 1-0. From there though several OSU players dropped their first sets and had to climb back. Justin Boulais, Cannon Kingsley, and Alexander Bernard all dropped their first sets to put things in doubt. And while Jack Anthrop was able to get a win for OSU, the other trio couldn’t come all the way back, and the result was a 4-2 loss.

For TCU, it was revenge from when Ohio State got the best of it 4-3 in February during the ITA Indoor national championship match. For the Buckeyes, it’ll be another season of what could have been. OSU dropped just two matches during the season and finishes the year 34-2 with a Big Ten regular season and tournament title.

OSU will try to bring its first outdoor national title home once again next season.
