Louisiana vs Marshall R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Preview

Head coach Billy Napier might be off living his best life as the head coach of the Florida Gators, but this is still a fantastic Louisiana team coming in on a 12-game winning streak with a Sun Belt championship.

The offense might not have been quite as explosive and as fun as the 2020 version, but the team got through game after game with a strong defense, an offense that was among the most mistake-free in all of college football, and by doing all of the little things right.

On the flip side, Marshall found plenty of new and creative ways to turn the ball over, couldn’t stop the run, and it could never seem to find any consistency. However, the passing game was fun, the wins came against the teams it was supposed to beat, and the pass rush got their mail in the opposing backfield.

To win this, the Herd have to open it up. The passing attack has to break Louisiana out of its controlled style, and this will need to be a bit of a shootout to make this a tad more frenetic.

Sun Belt Championship: Appalachian State vs Louisiana Game Preview

Why Appalachian State Will Win

The 41-13 loss to Louisiana back on October 12th didn’t represent Appalachian State’s best work.

The offense turned it over three times, finished with just 211 yards, and everything was awful right out of the gate in a weird weeknight blowout loss.

Since then the Mountaineers have won six straight, the defense allowed 17 points over the last three games and 14 points or fewer in each of the last four, and the running game kicked it all back in again.

The offensive line has been phenomenal in pass protection, the defense is the best in the conference – the run D allowed 175 yards or fewer in every game but the loss to the Ragin’ Cajuns – and now the team gets to make amends.

In the first meeting, the offense turned it over four times, failed to convert on a third down chance, and it never looked or played like it normal.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, Championship Week

Why Louisiana Will Win

Louisiana had a little something to do with Appalachian State’s performance.

This hasn’t always been the most consistent of teams this year, but it keeps on winning.

Levi Lewis and the passing attack has been able to fill in the gap when the running game didn’t blow up, the defense allowed 21 points or fewer in nine of the last ten games, and turnover margin has played a monster role in a whole lot of good, tough wins.

Going to Liberty was supposed to be a problem. The Ragin’ Cajuns came up with six takeaways on the road.

Going to Troy was supposed to be a problem. The Ragin’ Cajuns came up with three takeaways on the road.

The veteran offense has failed to turn the ball over in any of the last three games and only lost the ball more than once in one game – a 28-27 win over Arkansas State.

On the flip side, Appalachian State might take the ball away in bunches, but the offense has given it up multiple times in six of the last ten games.

Louisiana isn’t losing the turnover battle in this, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

What’s Going To Happen

The run defense will hold up again.

New Florida head coach Billy Napier will be around for one more game with his Louisiana team, and at home his team will come up with a big day on D and an efficient enough performance on O.

Appalachian State will get cranked up early and come up with a big first quarter, but Louisiana will slowly keep coming with a few long scoring drives to stay in it.

Two takeaways will help get the Ragin’ Cajuns over the hump.

Lincoln Riley to USC, Billy Napier to Florida. GAME … ON …

USC hired Lincoln Riley and Florida hired Billy Napier, filling two of the big head coaching openings.

Lincoln Riley to take the open Oklahoma job, and Billy Napier will go to Florida. Now for both programs it’s Game On.

Lincoln Riley takes USC head coaching job, Billy Napier to take the Florida job

Rankings AP | Coaches | CFN 1-130 Rankings

Two of the biggest college football head coaching questions were answered, but that just opens up more big jobs.

Forget Fight On at USC. It’s Game On with Lincoln Riley now about to be the highest-profile – and by a mile, the highest paid – head football coach in the city of Los Angeles.

The fan base wanted an A-lister of A-lister, and it just got it.

Here’s the guy who’s about to bring the high-octane offense, the resumé with four Big 12 championships in five seasons, four top six finishes, two Heisman Trophy winners and a finalist in Jalen Hurts, and three College Football Playoff appearances.

Now USC is a thing again. Not just because it’s USC, and not just because it’s supposed to be a Power Five conference. Now this ups the game in a huge way for recruiting, the overall profile of the football program, the conference, and what the Pac-12 is about to be.

It also says one very important thing – the prime SEC jobs aren’t quite what everyone thinks they are.

Of course the LSU job is huge, and of course the pressure is going to be National Title or Bust at USC, but the expectations are at a whole other level of insane in the SEC – you can never, ever, ever lose.

Who wants to beat their head against the SEC West wall when you can live life in the Pac-12 South?

Billy Napier wants to give it a try in the SEC East.

The Louisiana head coach was on every Next Coach Up list as the rising offensive coordinator coaching star at Arizona State before the head coaching job went to Herm Edwards.

Napier needed a head coaching job first, he guided Louisiana into a steadily-winning power in the Sun Belt with a national profile, and it became a question of just how big the jump up would be.

But now he has to win right away.

There’s not going to be any sort of a grace period at Florida.

Maybe a 9-3ish season is okay in Year One as long as the team looks like it’s about to be built up into a super-power again, but then it’s SEC Championship or Bust.

Dan Mullen got the team to the SEC title game. Jim McElwain got Florida there a few times. Napier now goes from battling with Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina for the Sun Belt title to needing to beat Georgia. Now.

Louisiana is a solid job at a program that’s a great stepping-stone gig. It’s going to attract a high-profile riser like Napier was. And now the Oklahoma gig is an A-list job opening, too.

It’s Oklahoma. It’s going to be in the SEC. It’s now as big of an opening – if not even stronger – than anything else that’s currently available.

It’ll have its pick of top coaches who’ll want to step into a turn-key situation and keep it all going.

But for now, Florida and USC have two of the best and hottest coaches in the game at two of the best and hottest programs when it comes to powerhouse potential.

Again, Game On.

Louisiana vs ULM Game Preview

Why ULM Will Win

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s a rivalry game and all that, but just how much is Louisiana going to want to crank out the energy?

It had the Sun Belt West title wrapped up almost right away, and now it’s all about next week’s showdown with Appalachian State for the Sun Belt title.

For all of the great things the Ragin’ Cajuns have done, and for all of the wins, the offense hasn’t cranked it up all that much – the running game hasn’t hit 170 yards in three of the last four games.

ULM doesn’t have a turnover problem, it doesn’t get flagged enough to matter, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Louisiana Will Win

Louisiana should be able to control the ball and the game as long as it wants to.

ULM was looking like a potential threat in the Sun Belt West race, and then came the four-game losing streak to end all of that.

There isn’t enough of a ground game to matter, the offense is the worst in the Sun Belt, and there aren’t enough long, sustained drives take Louisiana out of its game.

As long as Levi Lewis and the Ragin’ Cajun offense don’t take any big chances and keep it nice and conservative, the points will come. It also helps that …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Louisiana doesn’t turn the ball over.

It only gave it away eight times on the year, and it’s not going to start screwing up this week against the Warhawks.

Yeah, it’s a rivalry game and ULM will pull out all of the stops, but after the first half it won’t be enough.

Beating ULM and going 11-1 are important, too. The goal will be to put this away fast and be on to the Sun Belt title game.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Louisiana vs Liberty Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

The Ragin’ Cajuns keep on rolling.

They might have lost the opener to Texas, but they’ve cranked out ten straight wins since, they’re on the way to the Sun Belt Championship game next week, and with a whole lot of help and luck, they could be in the mix for the New Year’s Six out of the Group of Five teams.

First, the offense has to get going against a Liberty defense that’s been good, but allowed over 450 yards in two of the last three games. To be fair one of those was against Ole Miss last week, but North Texas came up with a good balance and enough points to provide a push in a 35-26 loss.

Louisiana isn’t running the ball like it did last year, but there’s a good balance, there aren’t a lot of turnovers, and there shouldn’t be a whole lot of mistakes against a Liberty D that doesn’t take the ball away.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Liberty Will Win

The Flames get into the backfield.

The defense has a few issues here and there, but the line makes plays. Against a Louisiana attack that needs a little time to let things develop – and loves to get outside – it’s going to be tough with the Liberty ends crashing in.

This isn’t the smoothest of Ragin’ Cajun offenses. It gets the job done, but it makes things harder on itself than it needs to be. Defensively it’s been fantastic over the last several weeks, but it hasn’t faced anything like Malik Willis and the Flame backfield that ran for 284 yards on Ole Miss and averages close to 200 yards per game.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

It’s like a good December bowl game at the end of November.

Louisiana has bigger fish to fry in a few weeks, and it’s got a rivalry date with ULM coming up next. First, it’s going to give Liberty a hard time for a full four quarters. The problem will be the lack of consistent scoring.

With a dangerous home finale against Army next week, the Flames need to get a win here to avoid a possible late season slide. They’ll get it, but they’ll have to come up with a few late scoring drives to get out alive.

Willis will be great when he needs to be.

Louisiana vs Troy Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

The Ragin’ Cajuns already have the Sun Belt West locked up along with a bowl bid, but they have a shot for more than that.

If they win out and take the Sun Belt title, they might be a Cincinnati loss from being deep in the hunt for a New Year’s Six bid.

For now, they just need to be sharper.

Yeah, they’re winning, but too many games are a fight. They’re used to close battles, and this should be that against a Troy team with a good enough defense to be nasty.

However, Louisiana has the offense that can control the clock. It does all the little things right – it doesn’t turn the ball over, the punting game is solid, and the defense holds up when it has to.

Troy doesn’t have a big-time offense, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Troy Will Win

The Trojan defense continues to hold up just fine.

This might not be a high-powered team, but it’s able stop the run, the D gets off the field on third downs, and the pass rush is enough to be a bother for a Ragin’ Cajun offense that’s used to owning the offensive front.

This is big for Troy. With Appalachian State and a trip to Georgia State to close, getting bowl eligible now would be a big deal, and …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a bit of an inconsistent Troy team that doesn’t have the pop to keep up if Louisiana gets off to a hot start, but at home, the D will come through.

The Ragin’ Cajuns have a weird way of rising up and rocking – like with the destruction of Appalachian State and blowouts over Ohio and Texas State – but those are at home.

The Trojans have won three of their last four – the only loss was at Coastal Carolina – and they’ll hang on for dear life in the final moments to get their best win of the year.

Georgia State vs Louisiana Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

On a three-game winning streak, the Panthers have kicked in the running game with close to 900 yards on the ground over the stretch while also being able to balance it all out with an effective passing game to keep everything moving.

There are problems – the yards aren’t always translating into points – but the defense has been able to hold up in key moments and allowing 19 points per game overall.

Can it handle the running game? Does it have the front line to hold up against the Louisiana attack? It was able to keep the Georgia Southern quirky ground game to just over 200 yards and held Army to 258 – teams aren’t gouging the Panthers.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Louisiana Will Win

Again, for all of the good things Georgia State is doing, it’s having a hard time putting the biscuit in the basket.

The passing game isn’t efficient enough, the offense doesn’t hold on to the ball for long – the O is on the field for under 28 minutes per game, and …

The pass defense. That’s the problem. The Panthers don’t get destroyed, but they’re good for giving up over 250 yards through the air.

Louisiana is managing to do what it must to get things moving. It would like to run, but Levi Lewis and the passing game can balance it all out without a problem … and it will.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Indiana, Northwestern, San Jose State, Ball State, Liberty, Iowa State – to a certain extent – it’s been hard for all of the darlings of 2020 to keep the mojo going in 2021.

Louisiana has made it happen, and all with a bit of an overhaul in a few key spots.

This isn’t always the most dynamic of teams like past versions were, but it keeps getting the job done.

Georgia State has the offense to win this, but it doesn’t have the D. It’ll keep up and make it a fun game, but the Ragin’ Cajuns will pull off another weeknight victory as they take the Sun Belt West title.

It’ll be a fight, though, into the fourth.

Texas State vs Louisiana Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

How well can the Bobcats run the ball?

They’ve had moments here and there, but they were able to overcome a slew of their other issues by running all over South Alabama in a stunning win a few weeks ago. When they can’t control things on the ground – even a little bit – bad things happen.

Louisiana has been a bit too inconsistent. The wins are rolling, but some days the passing attack works, and some days if doesn’t really show up. The offense pitched a gem against Appalachian State, and then it went right back to moving the ball well without scoring enough in a too-tight 28-27 win over a bad Arkansas State team.

Texas State has to keep this close – four of the six Louisiana wins were decided by eight points or fewer.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Louisiana Will Win

The running game is on a roll.

After starting the season slow out of the gate, it all started to work with four 225-yard-and-more days in the last five games, and they’re about to push for 300 in this.

Texas State’s defense hasn’t been all that awful, but it doesn’t do any one thing at a high level. There isn’t enough of a push into the backfield, and the run defense doesn’t hold up well at the point of attack.

The Bobcat run D allowed 200 yards or more in three of the last four games, but …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

This is a weird Louisiana team.

It’s on a six-game winning streak, it blew the doors off of Appalachian State, but it struggled against … Arkansas State? South Alabama? Georgia Southern?

A win is a win is a win, but it would be nice to come up with a breather going into the finishing kick. This can’t be a West-clinching game, but if the Ragin’ Cajuns win and ULM loses to Appalachian State, they’ll earn a piece of the division title.

It won’t be easy.

Texas State won’t come up with enough good defensive stops, but the offense will be dangerous enough to make Levi Lewis and company keep pushing.

Louisiana vs Arkansas State Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

Is that the real Louisiana?

It had a rough start in the loss to Texas, and it didn’t exactly rip through an easy part of the early slate with close win after close win – the blowout over Ohio aside.

But the running game was okay as the first half of the season went on, and the wins were there to mask the other problems, and then, out of the blue … bam. The Ragin’ Cajuns pulled off their best performance of the year by a mile, rolling through Appalachian State 41-13 in a game that was over about six minutes in.

By the way, Arkansas State is totally miserable against the run.

Everything started out fine against Central Arkansas, but everyone else came up with 200 rushing yards or more in the five-game losing streak.

If it’s possible to hit the 200-yard rushing mark on the first drive, Louisiana might do it against this D. But …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Arkansas State Will Win

It’s not like Louisiana has faced a who’s who of top passing attacks after starting the season against Texas.

The offenses that could throw a little bit were able to do it, but there were issues against South Alabama and a Nicholls State attack that rolled for close to 360 yards through the air.

No, Arkansas State doesn’t do much on D, but the passing game would be able to start bombing and keep going against a Ragin’ Cajun secondary that’s been good, but is about to be pushed harder than it has all year.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not like Arkansas State doesn’t have talent.

Yes, the defense has been bad, and yes, it’s been a rough start to the Butch Jones era with five straight losses after the opener. But there might be a reason for that …

Memphis, at Washington, at Tulsa, at Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina.

The Red Wolves either played teams that were better, or lost a tough road game, or both.

That doesn’t excuse a D that’s had such a rough time, but as good as Louisiana has been, it’s playing someone its own size at home.

It’ll be a good battle, but the Arkansas State defense won’t be able to get the job done when it needs a few big fourth quarter stops.

Appalachian State vs Louisiana Game Preview

Why Appalachian State Will Win

The Mountaineers have the offense to not only keep up with Louisiana, but they can potentially set the pace.

The passing game is clicking, the sound game is fantastic, and the offense has pushed for well over 500 yards in each of the last three games – and 485 in the win over East Carolina.

What do you want to hit the Ragin’ Cajun defense with? Mountaineer QB Chase Brice has been efficient, the ground attack is averaging close to 200 yards per game, and even with a few key turnovers, everything keeps on moving.

Why Louisiana Will Win

The team is getting the job done.

It might not be as pretty as it was last year, but the offense was able to grind its way on the ground in a win over South Alabama, throw for a victory over Georgia Southern, and in general, it’s been versatile enough to get the key plays when needed.

There’s been just one interception so far, the penalties are kept to a bare minimum, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Louisiana doesn’t have a good win.

Beating South Alabama wasn’t without its charm, but there was too much of a struggle with Nicholls State and Georgia Southern, and Ohio is awful.

Appalachian State hasn’t been perfect, but it’s tested with solid wins over Marshall and East Carolina and a blowout over Georgia State.

Coastal Carolina might be the star of the Sun Belt, but the winner of this won’t be far off.

It’s a road date, but Appalachian State is too strong and too good offensively. Louisiana will have to to run wild to win, and that’s not happening – the Mountaineers haven’t allowed more than 175 yards on the ground so far.
