Louisiana Tech vs UAB Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

So what’s working?

It’s been a rough year with four straight losses and little to no offensive punch, but the team is doing one thing really, really well.

It can force takeaways.

It’s not a plus for the program at this point to just come close in losses – especially to Old Dominion – but it’s been forcing turnovers in bunches. It didn’t generate any against ODU, but it came up with eight in the previous three games with was why the Bulldogs were able to stay around with NC State, UTSA, and UTEP.

UAB isn’t air tight with the ball. It’s not awful when it comes to turnovers, but it gave it away four times against Tulane and four more against Florida Atlantic.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why UAB Will Win

Yeah, the Louisiana Tech offense. There’s no running game.

The passing attack isn’t awful – it should be able to hit 250 yards without a problem – but that’s not enough. There’s no ground attack for UAB to deal with – the Bulldogs haven’t hit 100 yards in four of the last five games.

The UAB defense has been inconsistent overall, but it’s been solid in Conference USA play. Amazing over the last three games, it stuffed everything Southern Miss tried to do, didn’t allow much against Florida Atlantic, and wasn’t bad against Rice, but …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Just when it seemed like UAB was ready to make a big move, it dropped a home game to a Rice team it should’ve rolled through.

UAB couldn’t convert on its third down tries, Rice could, and it was a 30-24 loss. The defense will bounce back, the offense will hit on enough deep plays to take over, and the rested team will get through this and deal with the huge finishing kick of at Marshall, at UTSA, UTEP.

Louisiana Tech vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The passing game is a whole lot of fun.

It has to bomb away to keep up, and it didn’t do much against UTEP a few weeks ago, but it got to well over 300 yards in two of the last three games and three of the last five.

Old Dominion is good at keeping scores low – for the most part – and staying in range, but it doesn’t have a consistent downfield passing game and turns the ball over way too often. It hasn’t been great against the decent passing games, giving up close to 400 yards two weeks ago to the WKU air show and close to 300 yards to Marshall – Louisiana Tech will get to 300 yards, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Louisiana Tech doesn’t have enough of a pass rush to bother the Old Dominion backfield with just two sacks in the last three games and ten on the year.

Old Dominion has enough of a running game to potentially slow things down, and if the passing game can be a balance and not force anything, it should dominate the time of possession battle.

It has GOT to stop with the giveaways. The Monarchs have turned it over two or more times in each of the last four games and ten times during the stretch, but …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Louisiana Tech has turned it over eight times in the last three and is hit-or-miss on takeaways.

If the Bulldogs can force the four turnovers – or close to it – like they did against UTEP, they win. The can win with three takeaways. Anything less than that, and Old Dominion gets the first win over an FBS team in the Ricky Rahne era.

UTSA vs Lousiana Tech Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

What are the future American Athletic Conference UTSA Roadrunners doing that’s so right?

The lines have been terrific.

The ground game isn’t anything amazing, but the offensive front is great in pass protection and it’s effective enough for the good group of backs. The defensive front has been a rock against the run – Illinois got to 150 yards on the ground, and no one else has done more.

The Louisiana Tech lines are going to be in for a long day, and the secondary isn’t going to come up with enough stops, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The Bulldogs are great at staying in games on takeaways.

Sort of.

They lost to UTEP, but they came up with four turnovers. The four takeaways made the Mississippi State game close, and the three against SE Louisiana saved the day.

Giveaways have been an issue – especially picks from QB Austin Kendall – but the yards have been there.

Keep bombing, test the UTSA secondary that allowed 523 passing yards to WKU’s machine and over 300 to both Memphis and UNLV, and hope for a few key takeaways – that’s the formula, but …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UTSA doesn’t have a turnover problem. It only lost the turnover battle once this year, and even then it was just a -1 in a win over Middle Tennessee.

Louisiana Tech is in desperate need of a good break, but the 19-3 clunker against UTEP might have been one too many body blows. UTSA isn’t going to screw up enough to let the perfect season die in Ruston.

Louisiana Tech vs UTEP Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

UTEP might be 5-1, but it hasn’t beaten anyone who’s all that great.

Who cares? It’s UTEP – 5-1 is 5-1 no matter who you are. However, Louisiana Tech is the second-best team on the slate just behind Boise State, and there’s a massive drop to everyone else.

Louisiana Tech’s passing game should work.

The Miners have done a great job on defense against everyone but Boise State, and they allowed 340 yards to Hank Bachmeier and company.

Louisiana Tech QB Austin Kendall should be able to hit 300 yards without breathing hard.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UTEP Will Win

UTEP might not have beaten anyone great, but it’s doing exactly what a good team is supposed to do against a schedule like this.

It’s not like the mediocre squads are going off on the Miner D. The run defense has been fantastic – it has yet to allow 125 rushing yards – and the team hasn’t given up 300 yards of total offense in any of the last three games.

Can UTEP get the passing attack going? The Louisiana Tech pass defense isn’t anything special – to be fair, it’s faced a slew of high-octane passing teams – but the Miners are going to try grinding it out first.

A good rotation of backs are producing for an O that got to 200 yards on the ground in three of the six games.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UTEP is a fantastic story.

It’s having a special season, but it’s going have to fight to get that sixth win to become bowl eligible – and it’s not going to happen here.

Louisiana Tech has a way of playing up or down to its competition, and it’ll do it again. It has yet to be in any game that hasn’t been decided by a touchdown or less. That’s going to change – passing game will open it up late – but UTEP won’t be a pushover.

NC State vs Louisiana Tech Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Louisiana Tech might be wildly inconsistent, but it’s been good.

It suffered brutally painful losses to Mississippi State and SMU – the team could’ve easily have been 4-0 right now – but it also struggled against SE Louisiana and North Texas.

The team plays to the level of its competition, and it’s catching NC State coming off the win over Clemson and with trips to Boston College and Miami up next.

NC State isn’t generating any sort of a pass rush and doesn’t hit anything down the field with the passing game, but …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why NC State Will Win

Louisiana Tech – at least statistically – has one of the nation’s worst pass defenses.

It doesn’t help to face Mississippi State and SMU, but it allowed over 1,200 yards through the air in the first three games before dealing with North Texas.

NC State might not be perfect, but the defense has been a rock, especially against the better passing games. The D allows an ACC-low 249 yards per game and little through the air, but more than anything else, it’s outstanding on third downs.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll be hard to get up for the grind of this game after the emotional Clemson win, but NC State will wake up in the second half after getting down quickly.

It’ll be a focus game. NC State is better, but the Bulldogs have proved they can hang around and push teams that aren’t sharp. They’ll force two Wolfpack turnovers to stay in the game, but the second half will flip.

NC State will come up with two balanced scoring drives in the fourth quarter to survive.

North Texas vs Louisiana Tech Game Preview

Why North Texas Will Win

The Mean Green defense isn’t as horrible as it’s been over the last few years, but it’s still having a few issues – to be nice. It’s able to make up for it so far with takeaways.

It didn’t come up with any in the ugly blowout loss to UAB, but it came up with four turnovers in wins over Northwestern State and SMU – it’s a more aggressive, high-risk/high-reward style that’s doing just enough.

The passing game didn’t go anywhere against UAB, but it hit SMU for 388 yards the week before for an attack that can hang around with a Bulldog D that’s been rocked so far. However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The Bulldogs should be 3-0.

They gave Mississippi State a rough time in a 35-34 loss, and they lost to SMU 39-37 on a Hail Mary. Now, it took everything in the bag to get by SE Louisiana, but the offense has been amazing enough to bomb away through the first three games – the luck is going to start kicking in soon.

Yeah, North Texas is able to take the ball away a bit, but Louisiana Tech is forcing mistakes, too, with seven takeaways in the first two games.

The O line has been great in pass protection, North Texas doesn’t have enough of a pass rush, and …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams need this.

Don’t get too hung up North Texas getting blown out by the same SMU team that should’ve lost to Louisiana Tech. However, QB Austin Kendall and the Bulldog offense are far more consistent – they’ll move the ball however they want to.

The turnover battle will matter if North Texas is forcing big mistakes, but it shouldn’t be enough. Finally, Louisiana Tech should have a relatively easy game – even if the D gives up close to 500 yards.

SMU (2-0) vs Louisiana Tech (1-1) Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Very, very quietly, Louisiana Tech has been fun.

Former West Virginia QB Austin Kendall got the passing game going with a great fight in the opener against Mississippi State and with a wild shootout with SE Louisiana last week. There have been plenty of issues in the secondary – more on that in a moment – but the pass rush has been fantastic.

For all of the good things SMU has done in the 2-0 start, the secondary hasn’t been a plus. Abilene Christian and North Texas combined for over 600 yards through the air, and this week the Bulldogs should be able to bomb away to keep up.

However …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why SMU Will Win

Louisiana Tech will see your 601 passing yards allowed and raise you by 275 more.

It’s not just that Mississippi State and SE Louisiana were able to throw at will. It’s that they bombed away with each throwing three touchdown passes and the two averaging well over eight yards per pass.

SMU has its quarterback in former Oklahoma Sooner Tanner Mordecai, who threw two picks last week against North Texas but also cranked up over 300 yards and four touchdown passes.

Louisiana Tech might have the pass rush, but SMU’s offensive line has been outstanding so far – it has yet to give up a sack while also pounding away for close to 200 rushing yards per game.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Who wants to have some fun?

This isn’t going to be for the defensive-minded. Both teams will throw, both offenses will have their moments, and it’ll be a wild and crazy shootout with both passing games hitting 300 yards.

SMU will be tighter, more efficient, and it’ll get the key third down defensive stops Louisiana Tech won’t.

Louisiana Tech (0-1) vs SE Louisiana (0-0) Game Preview

Why SE Louisiana Will Win

It took a while to get going, but the Lions eventually cranked up the offense with a huge second half to get by North Alabama 49-28.

They’ve got the quarterback – former Arkansas starter Cole Kelley – and they’ve got the big passing game that was among the most efficient in the FCS during the spring session. Now they get to hammer on a Louisiana Tech secondary that spent last week getting thrown on in a 35-34 loss to Mississippi State.

The Bulldogs gave up 370 yards and three touchdowns to the all-throw Miss State attack, but …

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The almost pulled it off.

They collapsed late allowing 21 fourth quarter points, but Oklahoma transfer Austin Kendall threw for 269 yards and led the team with 68 on the ground as the offense was steady right up until it needed a big late drive.

The defense got into the backfield – defenses aren’t supposed to get to the quarterback against Mississippi State – and the secondary limited the big plays.

SE Louisiana might have a good passing game, but the offensive line gives up sacks. The Bulldogs are about to have fun on the defensive front.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The two passing games will trade punches for most of the game, but the Louisiana Tech pass rush will take over and get the late defensive stop it couldn’t come up with in Starkville.

Kendall will be great, but he won’t have to do it alone. The running backs will be far more effective as the Bulldogs start to control the clock in the second half.

Mississippi State (0-0) vs Louisiana Tech (0-0) Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Does the Mississippi State offense work yet?

It might have had a full offseason to figure it all out, but the Mike Leach team that was supposed to take the SEC by storm – and it did in the opener against LSU – averaged just 240 yards of total offense per game.

Louisiana Tech’s defense had to undergo an overhaul last year, but now the payoff should come with ten starters back around a great-looking line. To pull this off, though, the Bulldogs have to control the game on the ground and dominate the tempo, and they’ve got the veteran offensive front and the running backs to do that. However …

Week 1 College Football Schedule

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Louisiana Tech didn’t have much of a pass rush last year and it’s still going to be a question mark as the season gets going. Worse yet, the secondary might be experienced, but it should be fine – not amazing.

If the Mississippi State offense really does start to work like it’s supposed to, the floodgates should open.

The Miss State defense has the linebackers to slow down the Louisiana Tech running game, there’s size up front, and there’s a shot the secondary turns into  one of the team’s biggest strengths. So …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

If the Mississippi State offense isn’t humming, the defense will get the job done.

Both Bulldog teams are better than 2020, but neither one will be razor-sharp offensively. The SEC Bulldogs will start to look the part with the passing game, though, with QB Will Rogers and the veteran receiving corps starting to look the part as the game goes on.

There might not be over 600 passing yards like there were in last year’s opener, but after the clunker of a 2020 it’ll be a good way to kickoff 2021.

2021 CFN Conference USA Preseason Rankings: East

1. Marshall Thundering Herd

Quick Take: It’s one of the most interesting Group of Five teams coming into the 2021 season – it’s Conference USA title or bust. New head man Charles Huff has to pull the Herd offense out of the nosedive that screwed up 2020, and he’s got the parts in place to do it – especially for the passing game. If the D isn’t the best in the conference, it’s second.
Marshall Preview | Schedule

2. WKU Hilltoppers

Quick Take: The Hilltoppers will be deep in the hunt for the Conference USA title – at the very least, they’ll be among the top three teams. The pass rush will be a killer, but the real fun comes with an upgraded passing game. WKU took the parts from a big-time Houston Baptist air show to revamp the O.
WKU Preview | Schedule

3. Florida Atlantic Owls

Quick Take: Willie Taggart should have his Owls in the mix for the Conference USA title. The lines are among the best in the league, the special teams should be great, and if the quarterback play is fine, everything is there to come up with a big season.
FAU Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532444]

4. FIU Golden Panthers

Quick Take: After an ugly 2020, Butch Davis should have a whole lot more success in 2021. It starts with one of the league’s most talented secondaries, a good kicking game, and a promising ground game that should take more control of games.
FIU Preview | Schedule

5. Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders

Quick Take: The Blue Raiders will be in for a weird season. The team isn’t all that great, but it should push for a bowl game with a whole lot of winnable games built into the slate. The secondary is good thanks to the best group of safeties in the league, but can the offense keep up the pace?
MTSU Preview | Schedule

6. Charlotte 49ers

Quick Take: The 49ers should have a decent passing game, but can the defense hold up? There’s experience, and the coaching is solid, but the schedule doesn’t have a lot of breaks – the 49ers miss most of the easier teams from the West.
Charlotte Preview | Schedule

7. Old Dominion Monarchs

Quick Take: Welcome back, ODU football. After taking last year off, and with head coach Ricky Rahne having to wait a season to get his era going, this is Conference USA’s biggest wild-card team. What’s going to work right away? The offense should get going early on.
ODU Preview | Schedule
