Report: LiAngelo Ball to sign with Hornets, join Summer League roster

Could LiAngelo be reunited with LaMelo on the Hornets?

LaVar Ball’s dream may be coming to fruition.

Reported by Rod Boone of Sports Illustrated, the Hornets are expected to sign LiAngelo Ball and play on their Summer League roster.

As noted by Boone, speculation of the signing started when LiAngelo was spotted working out with the team via Devounte’ Graham’s Instagram this past week.

The middle Ball brother has yet to break through and see the NBA floor in several attempts. Prior to the NBA’s shutdown in 2020 due to COVID-19, Ball had signed with the Oklahoma City Blue of the G League but because of the stoppage, didn’t have the chance to play.

Ball later signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Pistons last December but was waived before appearing in any games.

LiAngelo’s last stint of playing was in 2017-18 with Prienu Vytautas of the Lithuania Basketball League, where he averaged 12.6 points per game.

With an impressive showing in Summer League, and the backing of his star younger brother, LiAngelo could potentially land himself with the Hornets or another team around the league.

Hornets guard Devonte’ Graham seemingly accidentally confirmed that LiAngelo Ball was working out with the Hornets in his Instagram Story on Friday.

Hornets guard Devonte’ Graham seemingly accidentally confirmed that LiAngelo Ball was working out with the Hornets on Friday. On his Instagram Story, Graham was walking around the Hornets’ weight room joking with his current teams. Graham shows the likes of the Martin brothers, LaMelo Ball and P.J. Washington before panning the camera at the end and pointing toward LiAngelo Ball before the video cuts out.

Pausing the video just before it cuts off shows rather clearly that it is LiAngelo in the final frames. After rumors suggested Ball was in Charlotte working out with the Hornets, this video at least confirms he is in the facility.

Ball’s grandfather and LaVar’s father, known as Big Yank, had indicated that LiAngelo was in Charlotte as an explanation for him not being at a recent Drew League game. LaVar’s team Big Ballers is competing in the Drew League this summer with the possibility of all three Ball brothers competing together.

LiAngelo could simply be in Charlotte working out with LaMelo in the same facility, but it seems unlikely he would have a stay in Charlotte this long that didn’t lead to some sort of deal with the Hornets, The most likely outcome still remains a Summer League roster invite that would allow Ball to showcase his talents on the biggest stage he’s had yet.

In a video piece for SLAM Magazine, LiAngelo Ball showed off his newly-purchased mansion in a house tour video.

In a piece for SLAM Magazine, LiAngelo Ball showed off his newly-purchased mansion in a house tour video. Running parallel with Ball providing updates on his playing career, the middle brother gave a tour of his mansion.

Ball’s house was shown on the final episode of “Ball in the Family” and was just down the road of the Big Baller estate of father LaVar and mother Tina. The house features an enormous foyer at the entrance, a kitchen, pool table, living room and a half-dozen bedrooms where brothers Lonzo and LaMelo have stayed during the summer.

The main feature, though, was the home theater which LiAngelo showed off before sitting down for the interview portion of the video. He discussed how he used his own money to buy the house, how he plans to continue vying for a spot in the league and an exciting possibility of him teaming up with his brothers and former Chino Hills teammates in the Drew League.

Report: LiAngelo Ball signs G League deal to take part in league’s bubble

LiAngelo Ball will reportedly return to the G League this season after signing a deal with the league to take part in the bubble.

LiAngelo Ball will return to the G League this season, per a report from Shams Charania on Thursday. Ball has reportedly signed a deal with the G League to take part in the league’s restart inside of the bubble.

The G League will hold a draft on Monday to fill the rosters for the teams taking part in the league’s restart. In total, seventeen teams will travel to the bubble to play.

Ball, who signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Pistons, could have been apart of the loan system the NBA implemented with G League players this year. Detroit is one of a number of teams not sending their G League affiliate to take part in the bubble.

Had the Detroit Pistons desired to keep his rights, Ball could have been assigned to a separate franchise’s G League team. However, Ball signing with the G League itself on Thursday indicates the Pistons did not loan him.

Ball was signed by Detroit ahead of training camp. He took part in camp before being waived after the team’s second of four preseason games. Ball did not see any action on the court during the preseason.

Kevin Durant offers praise to Ball family, LaVar Ball’s parenting

On his latest podcast, Kevin Durant praised LaVar Ball’s parenting after all three of his sons reached the NBA in recent months.

LaVar Ball has taken plenty of criticism, often warranted and occasionally unjust, for his parenting and how he raised his three sons. For as much objection as Ball has received for his loud, bold, bombastic personality that rarely takes into account the norm for how parents of standout athletes typically act, Ball has also been right.

On top of LaMelo being drafted with the No. 3 pick in this year’s NBA Draft, LiAngelo Ball’s signing with the Detroit Pistons on an Exhibit 10 contract meant all three of his sons had secured an NBA contract, proving much of LaVar’s confidence of the years as warranted.

Interestingly, one of LaVar and the family’s longest supporters has been Kevin Durant. Over the years, Durant has been a fan of Lonzo and spoken on how many kids and athletes wish they had a parent like LaVar.

On Thursday, Durant welcomed LaVar onto his podcast, The ETCs, for a chance to offer him some praise for how he raised his kids to his (virtual) face.

“Most definitely. I mean, you see so many different players and you see, you know, you hear the statistics about how hard it is to get to the NBA. And, you know, you got somebody that’s training you, that’s got knowledge on the game, know the history of the game, and constantly teaching you, you know, how to play this game, how to navigate in the life. I mean, you can only succeed no matter if you’re gonna make it to the top level of the NBA or you can be, you know, in the G league or overseas. You’re going to make some money in this game if you focus in and lock in and got somebody in your corner. So, I would I would say that’s one of the most important things, you know what I mean.”

Durant was also certain to give credit to each of the three Ball brothers for turning their raw skills into talent.

“But for for LaMelo and Gelo and Lonzo, like, they had natural talent, too, you know what I’m saying. Like, those kids, you could tell that they play, you know, they love the game and they play all day every day. Not just organized ball but with they friends outdoors dribbling a rock. I could tell that they was just students and just love to hoop.”

It wasn’t all compliments and niceties on the podcast between the two. Later on in the episode, Durant and LaVar had a back-and-forth based on the former’s belief that pressing opponents in the NBA would be a successful strategy.

Report: LiAngelo Ball among three players waived by Detroit Pistons

After not featuring in the team’s first two preseason games, LiAngelo Ball was reportedly waived by the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night.

The Detroit Pistons have waived LiAngelo Ball along with two other players, Anthony Lamb and Louis King, per The Athletic’s James Edwards III. The move comes in the immediate aftermath of the Pistons’ second preseason game of the weekend.

Ball did not feature in either preseason game. In effect, Ball was little more than a training camp player for the Pistons and is now one of the first cut as the team trims it’s roster down ahead of the regular season. The abbreviated training camp and preseason schedule effectively ended any chance of Ball making the opening day roster.

Ball being waived, though, isn’t a surprise given that he signed an Exhibit 10 deal. The deal largely serves as a training camp invite with an added incentive for Ball to land with the Pistons’ G League side. That will likely be the next move for Ball in his professional career, should he choose to stay in America to continue playing. The uncertainty of the upcoming G League season, though, could lead to him playing overseas.

LOOK: Detroit shows love for LiAngelo Ball with ‘Detroit Loves You’ billboard

LiAngelo Ball is the latest Ball brother to have a billboard welcome them to a new town with a Detroit one proclaiming the town’s love for him.

Count LiAngelo Ball as the latest Ball brother to have a billboard erected in his honor.

Last week, LiAngelo Ball signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Detroit Pistons. The deal essentially operates as little more than a training camp invite with Ball getting an added financial incentive to stay with the Pistons’ G League team.

To his credit, Ball has impressed during his time with the Pistons. Recently, head coach Dwane Casey complimented Ball’s work during the first week of the preseason.

However, that hasn’t changed the excitement level for Pistons fans in Detroit. On Wednesday night, a photo surfaced of a billboard in Detroit that donned Ball photoshopped into a Motor City Pistons jersey with his name and the phrase “Detroit Loves You!!!” as well.

Shockingly, LiAngelo is not the first Ball brother to have a billboard welcome him to a new city. When LaMelo joined SPIRE Institute in the suburbs of Cleveland, he was welcomed to Ohio with a billboard as well.

LaMelo’s billboard was funded by Overtime, an online digital media company that had a long-standing relationship with LaMelo during his amateur days. So far, there’s been no word on if the same company was involved in LiAngelo’s billboard as well.

Pistons coach Dwane Casey compliments LiAngelo Ball during training camp

Through the first week of the preseason, LiAngelo Ball has impressed Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey in training camp.

After signing with the Detroit Pistons over a week ago, LiAngelo Ball has largely faded into the background. As would be the case with virtually any player entering training camp on an Exhibit 10 deal, Ball has quietly assumed his role within the team as he fights for a roster spot.

On Tuesday, Pistons head coach Dwane Casey gave his first thoughts, albeit very brief, on Ball’s performance through nearly the first week of training camp. Casey’s four-word summary of Ball was succinct, calling Ball an “excellent player, great kid.”

The Pistons open preseason play on Friday at home against the New York Knicks. Detroit will host the Knicks twice over the weekend with the two teams set to play on Sunday as well. The ensuing weekend on Thursday, Dec. 17 and Saturday, Dec. 19, the team plays a pair of games against Washington.

The good news for Ball is that the Pistons’ four preseason games could provide the opportunity for Ball to get onto the court in a preseason game.

Lonzo Ball ‘proud’ of brothers LiAngelo, LaMelo making it to the NBA

Lonzo Ball shared his pride and happiness for his brothers after LaMelo and LiAngelo earned spots on NBA rosters this off-season.

The off-season has been a memorable one for the Ball family. First, LaMelo Ball was taken with the No. 3 pick by the Charlotte Hornets. His selection made history as he and Lonzo became the first brothers selected with top-five picks.

On Wednesday, LiAngelo created some shockwaves by signing an Exhibit 10 deal with the Detroit Pistons, making him the third Ball brother on an NBA contract. Lonzo, LaMelo and LaVar each reacted to the signing on social media in the aftermath, but Lonzo talked more about it at length to the media on Thursday.

“I’m just proud of them,” he said. “I’ve been with them the whole way. Since we were kids we’ve always been together (and) been very close…and we all made it different ways. That’s the beauty of it, going our own path and meeting up at the end is a great thing to see.”

Each path was vastly different to the NBA for the three brothers, as Lonzo notes. He took the traditional route, playing one season at UCLA before being drafted No. 2 overall by the Lakers.

LiAngelo spent only a few months on UCLA’s team before leaving the program following his international incident in China. His path featured nothing traditional as the only organized basketball he has played since leaving college has been with the JBA, LaVar’s short-lived league.

LaMelo’s path was oft-discussed leading up to the draft and was just as unique with stops in Lithuania and Australia. Ultimately, the fact they all ended up in the NBA is a testament to the hard work of each individual brother.
