NFL odds: Ravens big early favorites over 49ers for Week 13

The Baltimore Ravens are 5.5-point favorites over the San Francisco 49ers, and even that looks like a safe bet with how well they’ve played.

Few expected the Baltimore Ravens to dominate the Los Angeles Rams like that. Baltimore was a 3.5-point favorite against Los Angeles for Week 12, only to spank them 45-6. With the San Francisco 49ers coming to town in Week 13, oddsmakers are giving the Ravens a bigger spread to work with.

According to BetMGM, the Ravens are 5.5-point favorites over the 49ers. Given how Baltimore has handled their business since Week 7, even that lofty spread over the best team in the NFC seems like a solid bet. Over the last five games, the Ravens have beaten their opponents 202-62 and are actually getting even better with each week.

The last game Baltimore had a smaller margin of victory than the 5.5-point spread currently offered this week was way back in Week 5, an overtime win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Keep in mind the Ravens have since added several impact defensive players, including trading for cornerback Marcus Peters. They’ve also since blown out four playoff-caliber teams in their seven-game winning streak.

With the 49ers set to travel across the country three days after Thanksgiving, and with kickoff at 10 a.m. PT, everything appears to be in the Ravens’ favor here. So if you’re looking to place down some money on a game this week, Baltimore looks like a pretty safe bet to cover even a larger spread.

Could Ryan Tannehill be the long-term answer at QB for the Titans?

It didn’t take long for the Tennessee Titans to realize they had a glaring problem at quarterback this season.

It didn’t take long for the Tennessee Titans to realize they had a glaring problem at quarterback this season.

That was marked by the benching of former starter Marcus Mariota in the third quarter of the team’s Week 6 loss to the Denver Broncos.

Tannehill has performed well up to this point, recording a 4-1 overall record a starter for the Titans and completing 111-of-154 passes for 1,420 yards and 10 touchdowns with four interceptions.

Touchdown Wire’s Pat Yaskinskas believes Tannehill could be the long-term answer for Tennessee at signal-caller.

[lawrence-related id=22915]

“It’s fairly obvious that Marcus Mariota won’t be back with the Titans after being benched in Week 6,” he wrote. “When he went to the sideline, the common belief was that backup Ryan Tannehill would be used just to get the team through the season. Think again. Tannehill has made a case that he’s the long-term answer. He’s won four of his five starts, including Sunday’s blowout of Jacksonville, in which he threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more. After flopping in Miami, Tannehill is playing like a franchise quarterback. He can become a free agent after the season, but the Titans can’t afford to let that happen. They’ll sign him to a large contract for the long term.”

It’s true that Tannehill has done a fine job for the Titans, but he’s be inconsistent at other points in his career, so it will be interesting to see if he can stay on a hot streak.

He’ll also have to prove he’s a more viable option than other quarterbacks in a strong 2020 NFL Draft class filled with names like Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa and Jordan Love — just to name a handful.

Tannehill and the Titans will face yet another division opponent in the Indianapolis Colts at noon CT on Sunday in Lucas Oil Stadium.

Joe Burrow signs were all over Paul Brown Stadium during Bengals loss

Bengals fans know what they want.

[jwplayer lFQl9KSk]

It’s only fitting while the Cincinnati Bengals cemented the worst start in franchise history, fans at Paul Brown Stadium made it clear what they want — Joe Burrow.

A few signs made this point clear enough. One went up close to the field behind the endzone, as seen in the picture below from the game:

Fans raise a sign “Bungle 4 Burrow” in the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 12 game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Pittsburgh Steelers at Paul Brown Stadium in downtown Cincinnati on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019. The Steelers dealt the Bengals loss No. 11, 16-10, at home.

And sign guy, as he’s become known over the years while sending off varying messages (including a favorite, “I like Pizza”), was all aboard the Burrow train too:

Burrow, LSU’s quarterback who continues a meteoric rise this year, is currently the top quarterback set to enter the 2020 draft. As of this writing, Cincinnati is the runaway favorite for the top pick.

Rest assured the Bengals will see plenty of similar signs in the coming weeks with three home games left. Attendance figures to be sparse like it has most of the season, but the Burrow signs should make for an interesting environment as Andy Dalton presumably wraps up his tenure with the team.

Ravens keep pace in AFC playoff picture after Week 12

The Ravens maintain their two-game lead for the No. 2 seed and keep pace with the New England Patriots for the No. 1 seed.

By beating the Los Angeles Rams in Week 12, the Baltimore Ravens have kept pace in the AFC playoff picture.

The Ravens remain just a game behind the New England Patriots for the coveted No. 1 seed. With a head-to-head tiebreaker thanks to their Week 9 win, tying the Patriots would put Baltimore in the top spot, giving them home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs and a first-round bye.

But with the Texans, Bills and Steelers all winning in Week 12, the Ravens simply kept up their lead for the No. 2 seed. Buffalo is seemingly locked into the top wild-card spot, so it’s really Houston and Kansas City that Baltimore has to worry themselves with.

A head-to-head tiebreaker over the Texans from Week 11 give the Ravens the edge there, but a Week 3 loss to the Chiefs would hurt if both teams manage to end the season with the same record. So it’s imperative that Baltimore keeps at least a one-game lead if they wish to lock in the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the playoffs.

Below is the AFC playoff picture as it stands following Week 12.

2019 AFC playoff picture:

Seed Team Overall record Conference record
1 New England Patriots 10-1 6-1
2 Baltimore Ravens 9-2 6-2
3 Houston Texans 7-4 6-2
4 Kansas City Chiefs 7-4 5-3
5 Buffalo Bills 8-3 6-2
6 Pittsburgh Steelers 6-5 5-3

What if Andy Dalton rattles off multiple wins?

Can Andy Dalton change the trajectory of the team’s 2020 NFL draft plans?

[jwplayer lFQl9KSk]

Hardly 30 days after seemingly ending the Andy Dalton era, the Cincinanti Bengals have gone right back to him in the hopes of salvaging at least one win on the season.

This comes after weeks of Zac Taylor and Co. shouting from the rooftops about long-term evaluation and rookie Ryan Finley getting the full eight games to show what he’s got.

But the experiment is over after three dreadful games, the point of the change registering as simple — win.

“Yeah, we just want to win. That veteran presence he has will certainly be helpful through all the things we’ve been experiencing so far on offense,” Taylor told the media.

Which is a nice sentiment, ignoring the fact the Bengals have opened up a massive lead in the race for the 2020 draft’s top pick. It also waves aside the fact Dalton was 0-8 before getting yanked, completing just 60.4 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions.

One could argue the Bengals perhaps win one of the last two games with Dalton in there. The 17-10 loss to Oakland and 16-10 loss to Pittsburgh were putrid affairs, though the running game and defensive line showed signs of life.

Does anything change from here if Dalton somehow manages a win or two? Is a victory over the four-win New York Jets, or a takedown Cleveland in one of two matchups or a triumph over two-win Miami worth anything at all?

The answer is of course no. But Bengals fans are right to perhaps feel a bit of deja vu. It wasn’t too long ago a bad, bad team rallied late in the season and impressed the front office enough to give Marvin Lewis another season. Could Dalton do the same?

Knowing Dalton, the relationship with the team isn’t past the point of no return. He got benched and wanted a trade yes, but his upstanding character isn’t a secret.

It should go without saying, but the pick at first overall, provided the team stays there, should be a quarterback 10 times out of 10. It’s the most important position in sports and getting the guy of their choice isn’t something the Bengals will be able to do again. It also largely removes the ability to make a stupendous gaffe — no Billy Price or John Ross over Patrick Mahomes this time.

Given the jerky, almost erratic actions of this staff and front office lately, it’s hard to get a guaranteed read on what the plans are for the 2020 draft. But it’s understandable if fans have gone from worrying about earning the top pick to worrying about whether the team will actually take a quarterback.

Bengals seem to have no equal in race for 2020 draft’s top pick

The Bengals currently hold the first pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

[jwplayer lFQl9KSk]

The Cincinnati Bengals have lost 11 games in a row (counting just this season) and have solidified the worst start in franchise history.

In the process, the team went to rookie passer Ryan Finley. After the latest loss, the team has decided to go back to Andy Dalton.

Perhaps it helps that the Bengals now hold a two-game lead in the race to pick first in the 2020 NFL draft.

While the Bengals were busy losing to a depleted Pittsburgh team, the Washington Redskins were out picking up their second win of the season. The 19-16 win over Detroit there, led by rookie passer Dwayne Haskins, means there are no more one-win teams in the NFL.

Perhaps Dalton can change that in the coming weeks. One could argue he might’ve won one of the two close losses recently. Either way, how he plays over the final five — if he’s even in for all of them — might not influence what the team does with the top overall pick.

And right now, it doesn’t look like the Bengals will let the top pick slip from their grasp.

Everything Zac Taylor said about going back to Andy Dalton over Ryan Finley

Zac Taylor talked at length about the decision to go back to Andy Dalton.

[jwplayer lFQl9KSk-ThvAeFxT]

Zac Taylor shocked the NFL world Monday by announcing Andy Dalton would once again be the starting quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, pushing aside rookie Ryan Finley.

Finley got to start three games. He struggled, but everything from Taylor and the coaching staff prior to Monday had reinforced the idea the rookie would be the starter the rest of the way.

Taylor met with the media and kept the explanation for the move simple: “Yeah, we just want to win. That veteran presence he has will certainly be helpful through all the things we’ve been experiencing so far on offense.”

Taylor wouldn’t commit to whether Dalton would finish the season and also said he’s not thinking about how it impacts things like the upcoming draft.

On his relationship with Dalton, Taylor offered the following:

“Andy and I have had many, many, many conversations since all that happened, before and after. We’ve been on the same page. Andy has handled it as well as you could hope any veteran would.”

Perhaps most interesting was Taylor commenting on whether this move had anything to do with possibly losing his locker room:

“The team has understood everything we’ve done up to this point. I always have an open door for those guys to come up and talk. There have been times throughout the season where players have felt like they needed to, they have, and they know that I’m going to be open with them. I feel like we’re in a good place with the locker room, and we have been throughout the whole season.”

After briefly attempting to evaluate Finley to get a better idea of the offseason plan — as well as looking for a spark — Taylor and his staff now have a focus on wins.

As Taylor pointed out during his chat Monday though, so many moving pieces have made it hard for either quarterback to excel. Dalton’s second chance this year starts with a visit from the New York Jets on Sunday.

Jalen Ramsey, Marcus Peters have to be physically separated after game

Former Rams cornerback Marcus Peters clearly took exception to being traded to the Ravens, earning beef with Jalen Ramsey after the game

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marcus Peters clearly carried a big chip on his shoulder heading into this game. Going against the team that got rid of him and ultimately replaced him by trading for Jalen Ramsey in Week 7, Peters was bottled lightning all game long. But when the final whistle blew in Baltimore’s 45-6 route of Los Angeles, Peters and Ramsey had to be physically restrained from one another, according to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic.

Video from the pair meeting on the field shows both players barking at one another and Ramsey needing to be pushed back by staff members and coaches.

Peters had spent all game egging on his former teammates. He was trash-talking after every play, including when the Ravens’ offense was on the field. At one point, he was spotted jeering Ramsey from the sideline, calling for him and sticking out his tongue.

But Peters certainly backed up his talk on the field. Not only did Baltimore’s offense hold the Rams to just six points — their lowest total since Week 14 of last season — Peters snagged an interception of quarterback Jared Goff.

Peters is having an All-Pro season, notching five interceptions, including three returned for touchdowns over 11 games. He currently leads all cornerbacks in the NFL in Pro Bowl votes from fans and his new team is sitting at 9-2 and looking at one of the top seeds in the AFC playoff picture. Peters certainly seems to have a right to be bragging right now.

Lamar Jackson threads the needle to RB Mark Ingram for another TD vs. Rams

A quick TD pass to running back Mark Ingram gives Lamar Jackson his third game with at least 4 touchdown passes.

Lamar Jackson and the Ravens offense is continuing to put in the work. After scoring touchdowns on each of their drives during the first half, the Ravens just opened up the second half with a drive that ended with yet another touchdown to bring the score to 35-6.

Mark Ingram ran outside before making a quick cut in to catch a pass that Jackson squeezed in between two defenders and running it in for Jackson’s fourth touchdown pass of the night and Ingram’s second total touchdown.

This the third game this season where Jackson has thrown at least four touchdown passes, with his other efforts coming against the Miami Dolphins in Week 1 and the Houston Texans in Week 11.
