Matt Nagy helped Patrick Mahomes cheat on his predraft test with Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes nailed his predraft meeting with the Kansas City Chiefs, with a little help from then-offensive coordinator Matt Nagy

The Kansas City Chiefs hit a grand slam when they traded up to land quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL draft, and they might have Matt Nagy to thank for it.

Nagy, the former Chicago Bears head coach who was the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator at the time, was apparently smitten with the Texas Tech gunslinger leading up to the draft. So much so, that he fed some inside information to Mahomes just before he was set to meet with the team.

Mahomes told the story, which he says Chiefs head coach Andy Reid didn’t even know until now, on Travis and Jason Kelce’s podcast:

Mahomes says he returned the favor later in the draft process, telling the Chiefs which teams had told him they were targeting him in the first round, so they knew when and where they would need to trade up on draft night to make sure they got him.

Nagy’s tenure with the Bears didn’t go so well, but he’s back in Kansas City now as Mahomes’ quarterbacks coach.

Who knows what would have happened if Nagy hadn’t tipped off Mahomes about which plays they were going to break down in that meeting.

Why Kansas City Will Win

The Chiefs still know how to crank up the offense, too.

Even without a great ground game and with Tyreek Hill off to Miami, Kansas City is still the best scoring team in the NFL, it comes up with the most first downs, and it’s still able to strike in a hiccup.

For all of the great things the Bills do, few teams actually try to grind it out. Usually it’s all about winging it around to try keeping up. If you have a confident offense that doesn’t get freaked out with how easy it is for Buffalo to roll up and down the field, there’s a chance to flip the narrative.

Kansas City has to keep trying to run. Teams aren’t bad at running on the Bills – even if it’s not Lamar Jackson taking off – but again, they don’t do it. Patrick Mahomes will get his share of big pass plays in, but the O will mix things up.

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t just assume Buffalo will waltz into Arrowhead and win ugly because of some revenge factor after losing last year’s epic playoff game.

Assume Buffalo might win ugly because it’s really that good.

This might not be the shootout everyone is expecting – the guys on the respective defensive sides are getting paid, too – but there will be bursts.

Kansas City will come out hot, then it’ll be Allen’s turn, the game will settle in, and then it’ll be the Buffalo defense that turns into the star in the second half.

Tampa Bay doesn’t have any wide receivers, and it shows.

Mike Evans is back, but Chris Godwin, Russell Gage, Breshad Perriman and Julio Jones are all very questionable or out.

This is a different Buccaneer team that’s relying more on running the ball and a good defense than Tom Brady winging it around 50 times. We know that this Kansas City offense has the ability to crank it up – we have yet to see it from the Tampa Bay side.

The Bucs forced eight takeaways in the three games, aren’t allowing much of anything on the ground – they have yet to allow a touchdown run – and they’ve got the pass rush to bother Patrick Mahomes just enough to be a problem.
