Is he being underrated as a playmaker?

Some players just seem to have a nose for the football and, in the last handful of years, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in the Mountain West who was better in that regard than Utah State linebacker Justin Rice.

That’s because, in three different stops, he simply never stopped making plays. He was recruited out of high school by Fresno State and, after playing sparingly for two seasons, broke onto the scene in 2019 as a first-team all-Mountain West defender. The conference media would tab Rice as its preseason pick for defensive player of the year in 2020, though the chance to follow through on that never materialized once COVID-19 derailed plays to play the full season and, in the uncertainty that followed, Rice chose to transfer to Arkansas State.

All he did in the Sun Belt was lead all FBS defenders in tackles for loss during the 2020 season, earning another first-team all-conference nod in the process, before following head coach Blake Anderson to Utah State ahead of the 2021 season, a key transfer who helped to spearhead the Aggies rise to the top of the Mountain West last season. Will all of that be enough, however, to help him hear his name called at the NFL Draft?

Highlights

Strengths

One thing that’s evident in Rice’s game is that he has the instincts to know exactly where he needs to be in most situations and the kind of abandon that enables him to finish plays effectively.

Generally speaking, that has made him an asset in run defense over the years evidenced by hosting 41 career tackles for loss (32 of which came between 2020 and 2021). However, he knows how to make plays in space, too, and has a knack for creating big play opportunities.

Weaknesses

The biggest concern about Rice is that, in today’s NFL, he simply may not have the size or length required of modern linebackers. For as effective as he could be defending the run, the pro game is all about the pass and analysts seems to think that’s where his limitations could catch up with him.

The worries, according to NFL Draft Buzz and Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline, range from potential struggles in shedding blocks at the line of scrimmage to a lack of a fifth gear factoring into pass coverage. In other words, the diagnosis element of Rice’s game can only take him so far.

Draft Prediction

Rice isn’t the most physically dynamic linebacker in this year’s draft class, but there’s three years of proof to suggest that a team could definitely make use of his smarts and turn him into a contributor. If he’s drafted, it may not be until the seventh round, but it’s more likely he’ll take the same path as other recent Mountain West defenders like Andrew Wingard andย sign somewhere as an undrafted free agent.

Teams announced for offensive and defensive linemen ahead of Oregon Ducks spring game

The big boys in the trenches have been divvied up and given a jersey color for Saturday’s spring game.

[jwplayer D7w3k4k2]

On Tuesday afternoon, we got a sneak preview of what the green and yellow team were going to look like for the Oregon Ducks on Saturday afternoon at the spring game.

While the Ducks didn’t release the full rosters for each team, they did give us a breakdown of the wide receiver for green and yellow, as well as the defensive backs.

[lawrence-related id=23008]

On Wednesday afternoon, it was the big boys in the trenches that got all of the shine. Oregon announced which offensive and defensive linemen would be wearing the green on Saturday, and which ones will be wearing the yellow.

After the skill position players were announced, we broke down a list of potential 1-on-1 matchups that we would like to see on the outside in the passing game. That task would be a lot more difficult to do with offensive and defensive linemen, so we’re just going to sit back and enjoy the combinations of players that are going to be put before us as we watch them go to work.

It’s notable that there are some players on the rosters who we don’t expect to play on Saturday because of injury. Guys like OL Michael Wooten Jr., DL Keyon Ware-Hudson, DL Brandon Dorlus, and DL Popo Aumavae have been limited in practice leading up to this week, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them sit out the big game.

On Thursday, it seems likely that we will get a breakdown of which running backs and linebackers will play for each team, so look out for that announcement.

No. 2 Oregon Ducks dominate final round, win first Pac-12 Championship in program history

Pac-12 Champions! The Oregon Ducks held on to win the first conference title in school history on Wednesday afternoon.

[jwplayer nhsTupkk]

In the end, it wasn’t much of a contest.

No matter how they got it done, though, the No. 2 ranked Oregon Ducks women’s golf team walked away from the Eugene Country Club with the first Pac-12 Championship victory in program history.

As poor weather rolled through the Willamette Valley throughout the week, the Oregon players stayed their course and battled through the rain and wind, ultimately taking advantage of the “Duck weather” that caused other teams in the pack to fade on the final day of the tournament.

On Wednesday, the Ducks turned in a 290 (+2) to end the tournament at +6, which was seven shots clear of the next closest finisher.

It was Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu who led the way for the Ducks after another remarkable performance on Wednesday. Lu finished with an even-par 72, tied for Oregon’s best round on the day, to complete the tournament with an individual score of 210 (-6), which was the best in the tournament. Stanford’s Rose Zhang came in 2nd with 214 (-2).

While Oregon took the title on their home course, it was Oregon State and Stanford who split second-place at 877 (+13).

Up next, the Ducks will partake in one of six NCAA regionals, where they will look to advance to the NCAA Championships. The regionals take place on May 9-11.

Long odds are still odds, right?

The long college football off-season sometimes brings with it some unexpected narratives and, in recent days, it appears that one has sprung up in Las Vegas sports books around the Utah State Aggies. If a few bettors are to be believed, Blake Anderson’s team could be much bigger players on the national stage than anyone would expect. In fact, they could be… national champions?

That’s pretty heady company for a program which just won its first outright conference title since 2012, but is the big swing as ludicrous as it seems on its face? Ohio State, Alabama, Texas A&M and defending champion Georgia are all obvious contenders for next year’s College Football Playoff, but Utah State definitely looks out of place.

In theory, though, Cincinnati’s berth in last year’s CFP makes it a little easier to project a Group of 5 team to break through again. One of the biggest reasons the Bearcats were able to secure the bid in the first place was fortunate non-conference scheduling, with a big September road win over then-ninth-ranked Notre Dame to spearhead an undefeated regular season.

Coincidentally, Utah State just happens to have a road date on September 3 against the team which knocked Cincinnati out of last year’s Playoff: The Alabama Crimson Tide. While you can expect that Nick Saban’s vaunted team will be both a top-five squad and big betting favorites heading into the game, crazy things happen in college football all the time.

Should Utah State shock the Tide, they’ll also get a chance to tally another potentially big non-conference win on the road against rival BYU on September 29. Add to that a conference schedule with road games at Boise State, Colorado State and Wyoming… well, even if FPI gives Utah State a zero-percent chance of running the table, one can dream, right?

As for the other outliers, that Cincinnati-esque path to the top four is a little harder to see right now. UCF plays a pair of ACC foes, Louisville and Georgia Tech, at home,ย  while North Carolina State travels to East Carolina and hosts Texas Tech. Oklahoma, meanwhile, travels to Nebraska while hosting Kent State and UTEP.

If nothing else, the Aggies know they have a few backers willing to put money behind how good they think the team can be.

Ben Affleck as Nike co-founder Phil Knight? Yep, it’s happening…

Nike co-founder and Oregon legend Phil Knight will be heading to the big screen in the near future, portrayed by none other than Ben Affleck.

[jwplayer nhsTupkk]

If you’ve ever sat down to watch the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary ‘Sole Man,’ then you know that the story of Nike’s rise under co-founder Phil Knight โ€” with the help of executive Sonny Vaccarro โ€” is a fascinating tale of the sneaker industry in the world of sports, and how it’s transformed the world that we live in.

The story is apparently fascinating enough to make it to the silver screen in the next couple of years, with the famous duo of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck co-writing a script about Nike’s efforts to sign Michael Jordan to a shoe contract in the 1980s. It’s been announced that both will star in the film as well, with Damon playing the role of Vaccarro, and Affleck playing none other than Oregon legend Phil Knight himself.

Seeing Knight be portrayed on the big screen isn’t a new phenomenon. In fact, most recently in the HBO series ‘Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,’ Knight was portrayed once again in the race to land Magic Johnson to a sneaker contract early in his career as well.

Tyson Alger, with the i5 Corridor, interviewed the actor who played Knight, Olli Haaskivi, about playing the sports apparel giant.

โ€œI felt really lucky when preparing for it that I couldnโ€™t find any footage of him in 1979, at the age we meet him in the show,” Haaskivi told Alger. “There wasnโ€™t really anyone for me to impersonate or mimic. I got to have all of this material, but I really got to use my imagination and try to โ€” I imagine everyone feels like theyโ€™re trying to capture the essence more than doing a literal impersonation of something.โ€

So what will Affleck’s version of Knight look like? That’s a hard question to answer. Will it be ‘Batman’ Affleck or expletive-laced ‘Any Given Wednesday’ Affleck?

Only time will tell. When the movie is eventually released, though, we certainly will be watching.

Oregon’s rich football history will be front-and-center for Ducks’ spring game

“This program was built on players like those guys,” Lanning said. “We want to do everything we can to reconnect those people with our program.”

[jwplayer KJtVJdtb]

Embracing Oregon Ducks football history hasn’t really been a feature in the last two coaching regimes in Eugene. That’s not to say that coaches like Mario Cristobal or Willie Taggart showed any disregard for Oregon legends of the past, but rather that they didn’t make an openly concerted effort to celebrate the Oregon lore.

Dan Lanning is actively changing that.

On Tuesday night, it was announced that he has invited Duck legends Alex Molden and Walter Thurmond III to come back to campus and watch the Spring Game. On Wednesday, TE Ed Dickson was added to that list as well. Lanning is also having De’Anthony Thomas, Arik Armstead, LaMichael James, and Haloti Ngata on the field as honorary coaches during the game.

[lawrence-related id=21426]

According to the first-year head coach, it’s all about recognizing what came before and celebrating those who took the Ducks to new heights.

“I know this program was built on players like those guys,” Lanning said on Tuesday. “Legends, they’ve really put in blood, sweat, and tears for Duck football and we want to do everything we can to reconnect those people with our program.”

I asked Lanning if this was a new wrinkle in the spring game that he expects to continue years down the road, assuming that it will be a success.

“I don’t completely know that answer,” Lanning said. “Obviously, they’ve gone on to have great careers and we’re gonna have a lot of players in the future that go on to do the same thing. And we want them back around our program as much as possible.”

[lawrence-related id=23011]

The Oregon Spring Game on April 23 will be just one of many athletic events on campus throughout what is being called “Duck Day.” Track and Field will host the Oregon Relays throughout the day at Hayward Field with the first event set for 10 a.m., and fans can watch the soccer team’s 11 a.m. spring exhibition vs. Seattle U atย Papรฉ Field before walking over to Autzen Stadium.

Fans can then stroll on over to PK Park following football for the Oregon baseball team’s game against Washington State at 3 p.m., and then over to Jane Sanders Stadium to watch the Ducks’ softball program take on Washington at 5 p.m.

For his first official event as the Ducks’ head coach, Dan Lanning and the Oregon program are going all out. A host of the top recruits in the nation will be on the sideline for the game to soak in the Autzen Stadium atmosphere, and while there is an emphasis on getting the young guys to fall in love with the program, the old guard will be in attendance as well, watching on and hopefully appreciating a bit of what they helped to build in Eugene.

WATCH: Oregon’s Jaylon Redd opens up about recent battle with cancer

Must-watch for Duck fans. Jaylon Redd opens up about his recent battle with cancer after the 2021 football season.

[jwplayer KJtVJdtb]

In the weeks and months following the end of the Oregon Ducks 2021 football season, some questions regarding the whereabouts of wide receiver Jaylon Redd started to arise.

Though his final year of eligibility was cut short due to a season-ending injury in November, Redd was not around for Oregon’s bowl game vs. Oklahoma, and he was notably absent from the pre-draft process that was taking place in Eugene, with the Pro Day leading up to the big event in April.

On Tuesday, Redd finally opened up about what has been going on in his life over the past few months.

“There’s so many questions going on right now, and I just feel like I would like to tell my story,” Redd said in a YouTube video titled ‘The Jaylon Redd Story.’

According to Redd, a 5-year player for the Ducks, he was diagnosed with a cancerous neuroendocrine tumor on his pancreas back in December and had surgery to remove the tumor at the end of January.

“In December, that’s kind of when I had my first mishaps,” Redd said in the video. “I remember just eating a lot of food one night and thinking it was a regular stomach hurting from being full, or I might have food poisoning.”

The process started a couple of days after the Pac-12 Championship game against the Utah Utes, which took place on December 3. Redd describes a pain that he felt in his stomach that he initially thought was due to over-eating, or maybe food poisoning. After going to the hospital to receive fluids, the doctors wanted to run some additional tests.

On Friday, December 21, Redd was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

“I just had to overcome it and control what I could control at the end of the day.”

Things happened rather quickly over the next month, with Redd undergoing surgery to remove the tumor on January 31st.

“It was a real simple procedure. None of the cancer spread throughout my blood or anything like that. It was just a head-on procedure, cut it out and we’re good.”

Of course, in the times of COVID-19, things weren’t as simple as that. Redd’s parents, Fred and Alicia, describe how difficult it was for them to not be able to visit Jaylon in the hospital for seven days after the procedure due to visitation mandates. However, the surgery was successful, and Redd is well on his way to a full recovery โ€” cancer-free.

“He’s eating everything in my house,” Alicia said.

Up next, Redd eyes a potential return to football.

“Not everything is over, and it’s just my time to look forward with my career and what I want to do right now,” Redd said. “I am hungry, I am getting that feeling back of staying on my toes and not being able to relax because that’s the best feeling when it comes to football. Just knowing that somebody may be taking your spot, or a coach may be watching you. You always have to be on your toes on the football field, it’s a different type of mentality to bring on. And that’s just something that I miss these last three or four months because of these circumstances. So the fact that I’m getting back in that mindset, it kind of helps me when I work out.”

Though the last few months have been a setback for Redd, it’s impossible to ignore the talent and production he brings on the field. In his 5 seasons with Oregon, he had over 1,600 yards and 21 touchdowns. There’s a hope that he can play at the next level once he gets back into game shape and completes his recovery.

“I’m excited to see what my future holds just because I’ve been working so hard and I feel like there’s a lot that I’ve earned when it comes to what I’ve been working on and being patient. I know now that I can face anything coming at me.”

Can Wilson find a niche in the pros?

XX

Measurables (taken from Dane Brugler and DraftScout.com)

Height – 6′ and 2 1/4″
Weight – 207 pounds
40-yard time – 4.58 seconds
10-yard split time – 1.69 seconds
Arm length – 32″
Hand size – 9″
Wingspan – 77″
Vertical jump – 29 1/2″
Broad jump – 9′ and 10″ (or 118″)
Shuttle time – 4.4 seconds
3-cone drill time – 7.23 seconds
Bench press – 15 reps

Highlights

Strengths

The standout trait that put Wilson on the map to begin with is speed, where his 40-yard dash time ranks in the 91st percentile according to Mockdraftable and compares favorably with recent combine participant Desmond Ridder. Lest you think it’s merely straight-line speed, however, he didn’t earn over 1,000 rushing yards at Kentucky without the lateral agility to make the most of being in space and the strength to shake would-be tacklers.

He can do more than make hay with designed runs, however, as his short and intermediate accuracy, to the tune of a 65% completion rate, were also major factors in Kentucky’s resurgence.

Weaknesses

While making plays with his legs has long been one of Wilson’s fortes, doing so consistently with his arm remains to be seen. He has an adequate deep ball but averaged just 6.5 yards per attempt over the course of his career (by way of comparison, Nevada’s Carson Strong averaged 7.5 YPA while Liberty’s Malik Willis had 8.5 YPA in his two years there).

That extends to other areas of refinement, as well. Pro Football Network’s Ian Cummings notes that Wilson’s mechanics and pre-snap workload will need some time to attune to NFL looks and the pro game’s speed, so any team taking him on is likely to do so as a project upon which to build.

NFL Comparison

Geno Smith

Draft Prediction

Even in a draft class full of question marks at the quarterback position, the peril for Wilson is that he doesn’t offer enough arm to get the same kind of opportunity afforded to contemporaries like Willis, Jalen Hurts, and Kyler Murray. That dampens the liveliness he gets picked in this year’s draft, soย expect him to catch on somewhere as an undrafted free agent.

San Diego State offensive lineman looks to get drafted in 2022.

William Dunkle, several mock drafts list him as “Bill Dunkle”, started for three years as an offensive guard and amazingly allowed zero career sacks at San Diego State since starting in 2019. During the 2021 campaign, he earned honors as a member of the First Team All-MW and Second Team All-American.

The Chula Vista native came into his own as a proficient run blocker who creates space for his teammates to excel. Teammate and running back Greg Bell had his first 1,000-yard season following Dunkle’s blocks. The Aztec lineman has proved himself in the trenches at SDSU and is searching for a shot to play at the next level.

Measurables

Highlights

Strengths

At 6-foot-5, 330 lbs, he has the prototypical frame for the position, matching up with some of the top-tier offensive guards in this year’s draft. In a run-first offense, he’s a stud who locks onto opponents and moves them out of the hole. NFL Draft Buzz says he’s a “solid positional run blocker who flashes the nasty demeanor and killer instinct scouts covet.” He uses his momentum well and when paired with aggression, he’s a force on the line. Dunkle is a high IQ lineman who can expect the rush and have the ability to help the center in blocking schemes.

Weaknesses

His athleticism might be his limitation. According to scouts doesn’t match well the upper echelon of offensive guards. His footwork and technique do not come as clean as other offensive linemen and can get beat on one-on-ones. Despite not allowing any career sacks, he was not known for pass protection, so facing linebackers at the pro level will challenge his skills.

NFL Comparison

Mike Iupati

Draft Prediction

It’s hard to tell if San Diego State had more offensive plays to test Dunkle’s pass protection. Yet, his size and running blocking will get him recognized as a Day 3 addition or a priority undrafted free agent.

Oregon Ducks release wide receiver and defensive back teams for spring game

We don’t know the full teams for Saturday’s spring game yet, but the Ducks gave us WR and DB matchups on Tuesday night.

[jwplayer KJtVJdtb]

We don’t know the full picture just yet but we got a glimpse at what the teams will look like on Saturday afternoon at the Oregon Ducks Spring Game.

On Tuesday night, the Ducks announced a portion of both the green and yellow team, releasing the wide receivers and defensive backs for both sides. Based on the limited release, it appears that Oregon will continually release a couple of position groups per day as we get closer to the big game on Saturday.

[lawrence-related id=22980]

After a quick glance at the lineups, it should be noted that players like Dontae Manning, Christian Gonzalez, Bryan Addison, and Daymon David are all listed as playing. We will see if that is the case come Saturday, as those four have been dealing with injuries so far this spring.

Here are the full lineups that have been released thus far:

We will wait to see which position groups are announced next, but this will certainly tide us over until then.
