Tony Adams interception sets up Jets’ game-winning touchdown against Eagles

The Jets got a late pick of Jalen Hurts, scored a TD and upset the Eagles

There are no more undefeated teams in the NFL.

After the Cleveland Browns upended the San Francisco 49ers in the early window, the New York Jets surprised the Philadelphia Eagles, 20-14, at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

In a battle of teams in green, the home squad used an interception and a 45-yard return by Tony Adams to move ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Breece Hall scored on an 8-yard run to give the Jets an 18-14 lead.

The 2-point conversion from Zach Wilson to Randall Cobb made it a 6-point game.

The Eagles were unable to get a first down on their last-chance drive and the Jets had beaten Philadelphia for the first time in 13 tries.

The Eagles led at one point 14-3 and didn’t score again.

This will likely be a discussion topic in Philadelphia.

Aaron Rodgers on field at MetLife throwing passes

Aaron Rodgers was casually throwing footballs before the Eagles faced his Jets

This will definitely send the hopes of New York Jets fans rising and set their hearts aflutter.

Before Gang Green took the field at MetLife on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, Aaron Rodgers was seen tossing footballs.

Now he wasn’t moving or his usual agile self but to be able to throw footballs 34 days after his Achilles surgery in the Week 1 game against the Buffalo Bills, could give Jets Nation hope that he might return before the end of the season.

Of course, New York would likely have to play itself into postseason contention for it to make any sense.

Kirk Cousins: Five potential trade destinations

After a 1-4 start, and with Justin Jefferson on IR, would the Vikings trade Kirk Cousins? And if so, where?

The ship of the Minnesota Vikings has taken a few cannonballs to the stern, leaving them with a 1-4 record. Oh, and they just put Justin Jefferson on IR. Their season is already all but wasted, and they are sinking quickly.

This leaves the question that has been pondered for weeks- will the Vikings trade the man in their captain’s quarters, Kirk Cousins? If they were to make such a move, these five teams are the ones to watch the closest.

The NFL’s Worst of the Week for Week 5

From the Commanders’ defense to the Patriots’ offense to Sean Payton losing the Nathaniel Hackett Bowl, here’s the NFL’s worst of the Week for Week 5.

Football is often a wonderful, amazing, thrilling game that shows the capability of the human spirit, and inspires us in countless ways.

But football is also a stupid, maddening, infuriating sport that can take us to new heights of frustration, and possibly perform Keith Moon-style acts to our own home furniture.

It is in this spirit that we balance the greatness of the game with the utter futility it shows at times. It’s time for the NFL’s Worst of the Week for Week 5!

Nothing in the NFL this week (or this season) matched, say, the idiocy of Miami head coach Mario Cristobal’s decision on Saturday, but we’ve got some really weird stuff, as always.

Folks, here’s the NFL’s Worst of the Week.

Breece Hall’s 72-yard touchdown run gives Jets lead over Broncos

The Jets went 72 yards in one play thanks to Breece Hall

It figured to be an ugly game so an ugly score should be no surprise.

The New York Jets trailed the Denver Broncos 13-8 at halftime.

They grabbed the lead in the third quarter on a one-play drive that went 72 yards thanks to Breece Hall.

The former Iowa State Cyclone looks totally back from his ACL injury as a rookie. He took off and no one was catching him.

The Jets kicked the PAT rather than going for a 2-point conversion that would have given them a 3-point lead.

Oh, well.

The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell: Previewing Week 5’s biggest NFL matchups

This week, Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar get into Rams-Eagles, Bills-Jaguars, Cowboys-49ers, and a host of other games in “The Xs and Os.”

It’s time for Week 5 of the NFL season, and as always, Greg Cosell of NFL Films and ESPN’s NFL Matchup, and Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire and the USA Today Sports Media Group get you ready with tons of tape study and advanced metrics.

This week, Greg and Doug get into:

  • When you’re a month in to the season, how much can you base your scouting on trends and repeatable patterns?
  • How Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams control the middle of the field, especially with Puka Nacua;
  • Why the Philadelphia Eagles could be challenged by Matthew Stafford, Nacua, and that Rams passing game;
  • Why the Buffalo Bills were able to stop the Miami Dolphins’ high-flying offense, and what that means for the Jacksonville Jaguars;
  • What the Dallas Cowboys’ red zone issues are, and why it’s a bad deal against a highly disciplined San Francisco 49ers defense;
  • And why Zach Wilson of the New York Jets looked like a completely different quarterback against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Zach Wilson looked like a new quarterback against the Chiefs. Is it sustainable?

Zach Wilson looked like a different quarterback against the Chiefs on Sunday night. The All-22 shows how, and whether he can keep it going.

Through the first 27 games of Zach Wilson’s NFL career, the second overall pick in the 2021 draft looked more like the latest in a series of Bad Quarterback Decisions made by the New York Jets’ franchise than anything resembling a confident and consistent starter in the league.

Then, Sunday night’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs happened, and all of a sudden, Wilson looked like a very different player. Through the first three weeks of the season, starting with his time in the barrel after Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending injury in the opener against the Buffalo Bills, Wilson had completed 44 of 84 passes (52.4%) for 456 yards (5.6 YPA), two touchdowns, four interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 57.0.

Against a very good Chiefs defense that ranked ninth in DVOA to that point, Wilson completed 28 of 39 passes (71.8%) for 245 yards (6.3 YPA), two touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 105.2. It was only the second time in a game that Wilson completed at least 70% of his passes, and the first time he had thrown two or more touchdown passes without an interception.

Quite the step up for a young player who had looked lost in the soup more often than not.

“I felt like Hack [offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett] did an unbelievable job today mixing it up and spreading the ball around,” Wilson said after the 23-20 Jets loss. “I was seeing it really well. We need to keep building and I need to be better on the details. It’s the little things that win games, and you need to do them to be great.

“I think Hack trusted me better. Still, I need to be better for him. We need to keep growing on this and that’s the mindset for me on every single play.”

Robert Saleh, Wilson’s head coach, agreed regarding the progress.

“He was letting it rip and I thought he did a really nice job,” Saleh said. “I was just really happy for him to go out there and show that he does belong, that he can play in this league. If he plays that way, we’re gonna win a lot of football games.”

Wilson’s fumble with 7:45 left in the game marked the last time the Jets’ offense saw the field, as the Chiefs were able to bleed the clock (possibly with the help of at least one dubious call from referee Alex Kemp’s crew), but other than that, this was more like the Zach Wilson we saw at BYU than anything else we’ve seen to date.

The question is, was it a fluke, or can the Jets and Zach Wilson actually build on this? The answer lies in the tape, so let’s go there.

Referee Alex Kemp’s weird holding call on Sauce Gardner may have cost the Jets a win

Referee Alex Kemp’s defensive holding call on cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner may have cost the Jets a chance to beat the Chiefs.

With 4:29 left in the fourth quarter of Sunday night’s Kansas City Chiefs-New York Jets game, it looked as if Patrick Mahomes had thrown his third interception of the contest to cornerback Michael Carter. As the Chiefs were up 23-20, this was a major turn of events.

Then, referee Alex Kemp came busting in with the opinion that cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner had committed defensive holding on receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Kemp didn’t help matters by mis-identifying Gardner as No. 11 when Gardner wears No. 1 (11 is Valdes-Scantling’s number), and then, when you look at the play itself… well, it’s highly suspect.

That call gave the Chiefs first-and-10 at the Jets’ 35-yard line, and they were able to run out most of the clock for the narrow victory. Jets head coach Robert Saleh was ear-holing Kemp and his crew until the game ended, and he got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty which ran out the rest of the clock.

Hard to blame Saleh for feeling that way.
