Ron Torbert’s officiating crew is out of control in Falcons-Jets game

Referee Ron Torbert seems to think it’s all about him and his crew in a messy game between the Atlanta Falcons and the New York Jets.

Perhaps veteran referee Ron Torbert was inspired by Clete Blakeman’s need for face time in Thursday’s game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Seattle Seahawks. Perhaps he was bored by his assignment — a game between the Atlanta Falcons and the New York Jets. We would understand the second motivation. But this stretch of penalties in that game was… a bit extreme.

We’re not going to make you sit through every one of Torbert’s calls, but let’s just say that they were highly suspect.

Perhaps the NFL should start penalizing officials if they call more than a certain number of penalties, because this is getting utterly out of hand. The game ain’t about you, stripes…

Quinnen Williams demolishes Bijan Robinson as Jets notch safety

Quinnen Williams introduced himself to Bijan Robinson as the Jets met the Falcons

The announcer was saying the Atlanta Falcons’ offensive line had been getting after it the past two weeks.

Quinnen Williams of the New York Jets must have heard him and took offense.

The defensive lineman and his teammates barged into the end zone and Williams flattened Bijan Robinson for a safety.

Welcome to the NFL, rookie, Williams was probably thinking.

Jets open practice window for Aaron Rodgers to return

Seventy-nine days after tearing his Achilles, Aaron Rodgers’ practice window has been opened by the Jets

The miracle recovery of Aaron Rodgers from a torn Achilles continues.

The New York Jets on Wednesday opened the practice window for the quarterback to return.

That would be 79 days since he suffered the injury in the season opener against the Buffalo Bills.

The Jets are at the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 17 and play host to the Washington Commanders on Dec. 24.

Of course, one has to wonder the wisdom of bringing Rodgers back if the team, which is currently 4-7 is out of the playoff race.

4-Down Territory: MVP race, best under-the-radar team, mercy trades, Worst of the Week

NFL MVP? Most dangerous non-playoff team? Players in mercy trades? Worst of the Week? It’s time for this week’s “4-Down Territory!”

With 12 weeks of actual football in the books for the 2023 NFL season, and the Thanksgiving slate behind us, it’s time for Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire, and Kyle Madson of Niners Wire, to come to the table with their own unique brand of analysis in “4-Down Territory.”

This week, the guys have some serious questions to answer:

  1. Who’s the NFL’s Most Valuable Player at this point of the season?
  2. Which current non-playoff team is the league’s most dangerous?
  3. Which player deserves to be traded from his current team as an act of mercy?
  4. What was the Worst of the Week for Week 12?

The NFL’s Worst of the Week: Diontae Johnson, shotgun runs, bad Jets/Pats, Shawn Hochuli

This week’s Worst of the Week in the NFL included Diontae Johnson, Jared Goff, the Jets and Patriots, and of course, more horrible officiating!

Football is a wonderful, thrilling, inspiring game that can lift us to new heights in our lives.

But football is also a weird, inexplicable, at times downright stupid game that may force you to perform Keith Moon-level furniture destruction in your own living room.

So, as much as we at Touchdown Wire endeavor to write about what makes the game great, there are also times when it’s important to point out the dumb plays, boneheaded decisions, and officiating errors that make football all too human.

Folks, it’s time for the Worst of the Week for Week 12 of the 2023 NFL season.

Twitter reacts to Dolphins’ Black Friday 34-13 rout of the Jets

Here are some of the best tweets to emerge from the Miami Dolphins’ 34-13 win over the New York Jets on Black Friday.

Black Friday is made for deals, and the Miami Dolphins sure came away with a bargain as they routed the New York Jets 34-13 Friday afternoon at MetLife Stadium.

Tua Tagovailoa was surgical, although he did throw two interceptions. Nevertheless the remaining 21-of-30 for 243 yards and a touchdown isn’t that bad of a stat line.

Compare that to the Jets’ 159 yards of total offense. New York averaged 2.9 yards per play.

New York also entered another embarrassing play into Thanksgiving holiday lore. What could be more magical?

Twitter was full of takes and responses as the Dolphins doled out the punishment. Here are some of the best reactions.

Official Carl Paganelli suffers bloody lip during Dolphins-Jets scrap

Jets lineman Michael Clemons was ejected for contact with official Carl Paganelli

The New York Jets were frustrated and it boiled over on a PAT during their game with the Miami Dolphins on Friday at MetLife.

Michael Clemons was involved in a melee after the point that made it 27-6 in favor of Miami.

While the fracas continued, the Jets’ defensive lineman accidentally made contact with official Carl Paganelli’s lip, bloodying it.

Brandin Echols with 30-yard pick-six off Tua Tagovailoa

Brandin Echols got the Jets on the scoreboard with a pick-six

The New York Jets’ offense was going nowhere. Leave it to Brandin Echols and the defense to put some jump into the team on Black Friday.

Trailing 10-0 late in the second quarter against the Miami Dolphins on Friday at MetLife, Echols jumped a route and was off and running after picking off the Tua Tagovailoa pass.

Thirty yards later, he was in the end zone and the Jets were within 10-6 of the AFC East leaders.

That’s right, 10-6, because Greg Zuerlein missed the PAT.

Tim Boyle, who replaced an ineffective Zach Wilson as the Jets’ starting quarterback, was not doing much in the first 30 minutes.

He completed 7 of 10 passes for all of 35 yards.

Twitter reacts strongly to Tim Boyle’s Hail Mary pick-six to Jevon Holland

Tim Boyle of the New York Jets threw a Hail Mary pick-six the likes of which we’ve never seen, and Twitter had all kinds of thoughts.

If you’re a fan of the New York Jets, there’s one thing you never want to say.

“It can’t get any worse.”

Because it always can.

The latest example of the 2023 Jets’ Drive to Futility occurred at the end of the first half of their Black Friday game against the Miami Dolphins. Quarterback Tim Boyle was just trying a half-hearted Hail Mary to see if the offense could put any points on the board.

Turns out, the offense could… but in the wrong direction. Miami safety Jevin Holland was one of about five defenders who had a shot at Boyle’s long duck, and he returned the thing 99 yards for a touchdown as time expired.

Holland got some nice cardio on the play, as well!

Miami’s head coach knew that this was ballgame. Oh, Jets.

As one might expect, Twitter had quite a bit to say about this.

Jevon Holland returns Jets’ Hail Mary attempt 99 yards for Dolphins TD

A Hail Mary attempt by the Jets turned into a 99-yard pick-six for the Dolphins

New York Jets fans now know they have seen everything that can go wrong for the team.

Less than a minute after Brandin Echols took a Tua Tagovailoa pass back 30 yards for a TD, Robert Saleh called a Hail Mary with time running out in the first half Friday at MetLife.

The Tim Boyle throw was intercepted at the Miami 1. So, what’s the worst that could happen?

Oh, that. Holland took off and wasn’t done until he was in the other end zone, 99 yards later.

The pick-six off the Hail Mary sent Miami into the break with a 17-6 halftime lead and had to crush those in green in the stands.

Cue, Larry David and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
