Jets tie team record for sacks through three games

Jets tie team record for sacks through three games

Opposing quarterbacks have not had a good time facing the New York Jets through three games in 2024.

In the Jets’ first three games the team has put up an impressive 14 sacks.

That total began with a three spot in New York’s season opener against the San Francisco 49ers. That was followed up with four against the Tennessee Titans. The most impressive sack effort came in their most recent game against the New England Patriots where the Jets doubled their total with seven sacks in one game.

That 14 number has tied the team record through three games, per ESPN:

Jets reset stat on multiple-passing touchdowns for first time in years vs. Titans

#Jets reset stat on multiple-passing touchdowns for first time in years vs. #Titans:

The New York Jets have finally given their fans what they want: Some consistency passing the ball.

In Week 2, the Jets (1-1) got their first win of the season against the Tennessee Titans (0-2) in a 24-17 final. The win included a decent game from their QB, with two touchdown passes from quarterback Aaron Rodgers to running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen.

It was the first time in a long time that New York saw Gang Green have back-to-back games with more than one passing touchdown.

In Week 1, the Jets lost to the San Francisco 49ers but Rodgers and backup QB Tyrod Taylor both threw touchdowns. Those, combined with the two against the Titans, made it the first time since the 2021 NFL season that the Jets did that according to ESPN:

And for the potential next question: Who was the QB back then?

For three of them, it was Jets legend Mike White. The fourth and final came from backup quarterback Josh Johnson.

In similar fashion, Gang Green split those two games, 1-1.

WATCH: Braelon Allen ties Jets-Titans at 7-7

WATCH: Braelon Allen ties Jets-Titans at 7-7:

The New York Jets tied up their Week 2 matchup against the Tennessee Titans thanks to Braelon Allen.

Just before halftime, quarterback Aaron Rodgers led a drive into Titans’ territory. In the red zone, Rodgers faked a pass and shoveled the ball to Allen in front of him.

Thanks to blocking in front of him, Allen took the ball to the house, tying the game at 7-7 just before halftime.

Braelon Allen should get more carries in week 2: Jets vs. Titans

New York Jets rookie running back Braelon Allen barely got a chance to make a difference in week 1. Can he help his team vs. Titans?

The New York Jets rushing attack was very unimpressive in week 1 and rookie running back Braelon Allen didn’t even get a chance to make a difference. Will the Jets allow Allen to be an asset in week 2?

Allen is currently No. 2 on the team depth chart behind Breece Hall. Hall’s acclaim far exceeds the output he produced versus the San Francisco 49ers and fans our anticipating a bounce back game. However, with the Buffalo Bills off to a 2-0 season start, the New York Jets cannot afford another lack luster offensive performance from Hall.

Furthermore, transferring some of Hall’s touches to Allen makes sense for various reasons:

  • To maintain the attrition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Jets need to focus on establishing the run and sustaining offensive drives.
  • Also, by swapping fresh legs in and out of the lineup, Hall will have an opportunity to rest.

The Jets do in fact need Hall in the screen passing game and on those quick outside zone runs. Therefore, the Jets’ should give Allen some carries to help maintain the attrition of the offense.

Report: NFL execs think Jets will need to trade Haason Reddick

Report: NFL execs think #Jets will need to trade Haason Reddick:

The New York Jets are gearing up for a Week 2 clash with the Tennessee Titans, one that’s likely to be without Haason Reddick.

In April, the Jets acquired Reddick in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a conditional third-round pick in 2026. Since then, he has refused to report over failed contract negotiations with the team.

There is no end in sight with this saga, and now NFL executives have reportedly started to weigh in.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, execs around the league believe the Jets are going to have to trade Reddick at some point.

After the Jets and Reddick failed to come close to an agreement, he requested a trade in August. Soon after that report, New York general manager Joe Douglas released a statement essentially denying the request.

A separate report indicated that the 29-year-old is having to pay near $800,000, per missed game during his hold out.

And here we are.

The latest update from ESPN can be found below:

The Haason Reddick saga rolls on with no end in sight. Both sides appear dug in as the Jets wait for the defensive end to report to work. He remains on the reserve/did not report list and just forfeited a $791,666 game check on top of the more than $5 million in NFL-mandated fines he accumulated leading up to Week 1. Even those close to Reddick aren’t exactly sure when he might reverse course and clock in at One Jets Drive. The bad blood has boiled over, and now teams around the league are curious as to what the Jets will do if he doesn’t show. Their options appear clear: keep him on the reserve list until he reports or attempt to trade him closer to the trade deadline.

The latter is looking more likely, according to multiple league execs. “Not sure they have a choice,” an NFC executive said. “They wouldn’t get similar value back [a third-rounder], but it would be hard [for the Jets] to pay him at this point, and he clearly doesn’t want to be there. Both sides badly mismanaged the situation.” And the dispute has reinforced a harsh reality in trading for star players in contract years. “Teams will be nervous to make a trade for such a player if they don’t want to pay him,” a separate NFC exec said. “That was my first thought when Atlanta traded for [Matthew Judon], but it looks like he’s comfortable playing it out, so I guess it’s different. But if you make that move, you have to be prepared to do a deal in most cases.”

Jets’ OC Nathaniel Hackett should be criticized for play calling vs. 49ers

New York Jets OC Nathaniel Hackett has unreasonably  avoided a large amounts of criticism after his dismal play calling in week 1.

The New York Jets had collective struggles versus the San Francisco 49ers in week 1. Still, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett deserves criticism for his scheme and personnel packages in the Jets’ loss.

Instead of criticizing Hackett, many have chosen to slander the Jets’ defense which spent 38 total minutes on the field in week 1 and literally gave up only two touchdowns. For context, no NFL team averaged more than 33 minutes of possession the entire 2023-24 season.

Through ten total offensive drives, Hackett produced two offensive turnovers, a turnover on downs, and three punts. More importantly, the Jets’ offense produced a total of three rushing first downs which is inexcusable. Since running back Breece Hall carried 16 of the teams 19 total rushing attempts, it is reasonable to suggests that Hackett should deploy other running backs on the depth chart to assist Hall inside the trenches.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was able to sneak in a passing touchdown to wide receiver Allen Lazard but Rodgers’ witty play should not be an accreditation to Hackett’s brilliance.

The offensive issues are very fixable and Hackett will be in the film room this week to figure it out. However, Hackett cannot approach week 2 with the same rigid attack believing he will get different results.

Sauce Gardner and the Jets didn’t allow a passing TD in loss to 49ers

In spite of the criticism, Sauce Gardner and the New York Jets defense did not allow the 49ers a passing touchdown in their week 1 loss.

The San Francisco 49ers seemingly dominated the New York Jets defense in week 1, but some key stats indicate that defensive back Sauce Gardner and company actually held their ground.

Gardner and the Jets’ defense were asked to defend the powerhouse 49ers’ offense for a total of 70 plays and yet they only surrendered two touchdowns on Monday night. Neither of those touchdowns came through the air.

The 49ers were forced to kick six field-goals after sustaining drives into plus territory. This means that despite obvious fatigue, the Jets’ defense was unwilling to allow the 49ers into the end-zone more than once in each half.

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy completed just 65.5 percent of his 29 pass attempts and the Niners relied heavily (38 rushing attempts) on the ground attack to dictate the game.

Sure, analysts will criticize Gardner for taking a voluntarily gatorade break on the team sideline in the 2nd quarter. Yet, those same analysis subjectively disregard the fact that the Jets’ defense spent an inhumane 40 total plays on the field in just the first half. A half in which they surrendered just 16 points.

If and when Jets’ offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett deploys a scheme to sustain drives and get scores, fans will have a fresh rested Jets’ defense to assess. However, it is beyond unrealistic to expect defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich’s defense not to miss tackles when they’ve been on the field the entire game.
