Jaguars hoping to have DL Foley Fatukasi back vs. Giants

Doug Pederson says the Jaguars need “all hands on deck” to stop Saquon Barkley

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive lineman Folorunso Fatukasi has been out of action since suffering a quad injury in Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles, but Jaguars coach Doug Pederson sounded optimistic about getting him back soon.

“We’ll get him back in practice and hopefully he’s capable and he’s — obviously, he’s day-to-day still — but we’re hoping he makes it to Sunday,” Pederson told reporters Wednesday.

The Jaguars’ run defense struggled without Fatukasi against the Eagles and Houston Texans, allowing 326 rushing yards over the pair of losses. While Jacksonville held the Indianapolis Colts to only 45 rushing yards, the team was without its top two running backs and opted to pass 58 times.

On Sunday, the Jaguars will face the New York Giants who lean heavily on their star running back.

“We need all hands on deck with Saquon [Barkley],” Pederson said of the Giants running back. “I watched this guy for many years run all over of us. He’s one of those backs where he’ll get two, he’ll get three, he’ll get one, maybe a lost yardage play, and then bang, he’ll hit you for 50. That’s just the type of back he is, he’s an explosive running back.”

Through six weeks, Barkley leads the NFL in rushing attempts and he’s only 33 yards behind Nick Chubb for the league lead. Barkley also has 155 receiving yards. The Giants improved to 5-1 last week with a come-from-behind win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Jaguars WR Jamal Agnew day-to-day with knee injury

Jaguars receiver and returner Jamal Agnew suffered a knee injury Sunday.

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver and return specialist Jamal Agnew suffered a “strain in his knee” and is day-to-day, coach Doug Pederson told reporters Monday.

Agnew, 27, signed with the Jaguars on a three-year, $14.25 million deal in 2021 after recording five return touchdowns in four seasons with the Detroit Lions. In his first season with Jacksonville, Agnew had a kick return for a touchdown and returned a missed field goal for a touchdown.

In addition to his contributions on special teams, Agnew has also transitioned from defensive back to wide receiver and has made an impact on offense.

In a Week 4 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Agnew had an increased role with Zay Jones out of action and he rose to the occasion with 50 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

On Sunday, Agnew had a 19-yard rush and a five-yard reception, but was absent in the second half. His last play of the game was a 23-yard kick return with about two minutes left in the second quarter.

Through five games, Agnew’s longest return of the year so far was for 27 yards. On offense, he’s rushed for 29 yards and caught seven passes for 78 yards with two touchdowns.

Colts downgrade RBs Jonathan Taylor, Nyheim Hines to out

The Colts will be without their top two running backs against the Jaguars.

The Indianapolis Colts will be without both of their top two running backs Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

On Saturday, the Colts announced that Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines, both of whom were listed as questionable Friday, are now out due to an ankle injury and a concussion, respectively.

Taylor, 23, is the NFL’s reigning rushing champ after finishing the 2021 season with 1,811 rushing yards and 20 total touchdowns. But after opening the 2022 season with 161 yards against the Houston Texans, Taylor was held to 167 yards in the next three weeks.

The Colts ground game hasn’t found much success with Hines either, who has only 14 rushing yards on nine attempts this season.

Indianapolis has just one rushing touchdown this season and its 3.6 yards per rushing attempt rank 29th in the NFL. Third on the Colts’ depth chart at running back is Deon Jackson, a second-year back with 28 career carries for 90 yards.

Jaguars rule WR Marvin Jones Jr., DE Foley Fatukasi out vs. Colts

The Jaguars downgraded two veterans from questionable to out.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced Saturday that wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. and defensive lineman Folorunso Fatukasi have been downgraded to out and won’t travel for a Week 6 road game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Fatukasi, 27, suffered a quad injury during the Jaguars’ Week 4 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and was out of action in Week 5 as well. He returned to practice this week on a limited basis and was listed as questionable on Friday afternoon.

Jones, 32, was also listed as questionable after he was added to the injury report Friday with a hamstring issue. He’s coming off his best game of the year after finishing Week 5 with seven receptions for 104 yards.

The absence of Fatukasi will likely be filled by Corey Peters, who was elevated from the practice squad last week and was added to the active roster again earlier this week. The Jaguars offense will likely look to Jamal Agnew more as a third receiver with Jones out of action.

The Jaguars also announced Saturday that linebacker Ty Summers was elevated from the practice squad for the Week 6 game.

Jaguars place G Ben Bartch, OLB K’Lavon Chaisson on injured reserve

The Jaguars will be without Ben Bartch for the rest of the 2022 season, says Doug Pederson.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be without starting left guard Ben Bartch for the remainder of the season and backup outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson for at least four games. Both players were placed on injured reserve  Tuesday due to knee troubles, the team announced.

Chaisson, 23, missed the Jaguars’ Week 4 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles due to an ankle injury and reportedly suffered a meniscus injury in a Week 5 loss to the Houston Texans. The 2020 first-round pick has seen a diminished role in the Jaguars defense with the arrival of No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker. Chaisson has been on the field for just 31 defensive snaps in four games this season.

The more concerning loss is Bartch, who beat out Tyler Shatley for the starting left guard role in August. Bartch told a reporter Sunday that he dislocated his knee against the Texans. On Wednesday, Jaguars coach Doug Pederson told reporters that Bartch is done for the year.

Prior to Tuesday, the only Jaguars player on the injured reserve was second-year outside linebacker Jordan Smith who suffered a season-ending knee injury in June.

The NFL rules say that a player on injured reserve must miss at least four games before they are eligible to return. That means the earliest Chaisson could return is on Nov. 13 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

In addition to placing the pair of players on injured reserve, the Jaguars also announced Tuesday that defensive lineman Israel Antwine was released from the practice squad. Antwine was an undrafted rookie from Oklahoma State who recorded five tackles and a sack during preseason with the Jaguars.

Report: Jaguars OLB K’Lavon Chaisson headed to injured reserve

Jaguars outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson will miss at least four games as he’s reportedly headed to IR.

Jacksonville Jaguars outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson is headed to the injured reserve due to a meniscus injury, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Chaisson, 23, was one of the Jaguars’ first-round picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, but has only two sacks in 35 career games. He has seen limited time since the arrival of 2022 No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker and has been on the field for just 31 defensive snaps in four games played this year.

The NFL’s injured reserve rules state that Chaisson must miss a minimum of four games before he is eligible to return. That means the Jaguars could get the outside linebacker back as soon as Week 10 road game against the Kansas City Chiefs, although it’s unclear for now how long his recovery is expected to be.

It’d also be unsurprising if the Jaguars looked to find a market for Chaisson ahead of the Nov. 1 trade deadline. Fellow 2020 first-round pick C.J. Henderson was traded by the Jaguars during the 2021 season. There likely won’t be much demand for Chaisson considering his production, though.

Chaisson joins 2021 fourth-round pick Jordan Smith, who landed on the injured reserve in June, as the only two Jaguars players on the list.

Jaguars guard Ben Bartch says he dislocated knee vs. Texans

Doug Pederson said Ben Bartch is undergoing tests on his injured knee.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ starting left guard Ben Bartch is dealing with what he says was a dislocated knee suffered against the Houston Texans in Week 5.

Bartch, 24, told Andrew Badillo of First Coast News that he dislocated his knee Sunday, but should be okay. He wasn’t ready to make a prediction about returning in Week 6, though.

On Monday, Jaguars coach Doug Pederson didn’t have much of an update on the status of the offensive lineman.

“He’s getting more tests run today and should have something probably later today or possibly on Wednesday or tomorrow,” Pederson said of Bartch. “We’re getting more tests run.”

Bartch was a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and started most of last season. He beat out Tyler Shatley for a starting role this year and was replaced in the game by Shatley on Sunday.

According to Pro Football Focus, Shatley allowed two pressures in his 46 offensive snaps. Bartch allowed one in 29 snaps before exiting Sunday.

Jaguars DE Folorunso Fatukasi ‘day-to-day’ with quad injury

The Jaguars’ lack of depth on the defensive line could prove costly with Foley Fatukasi nursing a quad injury.

The Jacksonville Jaguars don’t have much depth along the defensive line, so a quad injury suffered by defensive end Folorunso Fatukasi on Sunday could present problems for the team.

Fatukasi, 27, was on the field for just 16 snaps during the Jaguars’ 29-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles before he was sidelined. While a nagging calf injury created issues for Fatukasi in preseason and the opening week of the season, Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said that isn’t the problem anymore.

“Yeah, it was his quad,” Pederson said Monday. “His calf was fine, it was his quad in this game, and he’s day-to-day right now.”

With Fatukasi out of action for most of the day Sunday, the Eagles ran the ball 50 times for 210 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Adam Gotsis was on the field for a season-high 58 snaps and made a few big plays, including a half-sack and a key pass deflection. Gotsis wasn’t able to do much to slow the Philadelphia rushing onslaught, though.

The Jaguars defensive line starts Fatukasi and Roy Robertson-Harris at end with DaVon Hamilton in the middle at nose tackle. The only three players on the depth chart behind that trio are Gotsis, Arden Key, and Dawuane Smoot.

While Fatukasi tips the scales at 318 pounds, Gotsis is the heaviest of the backups at 287 pounds.

Jaguars vs. Chargers inactives: Justin Herbert is active, Keenan Allen out

Justin Herbert is active against the Jaguars, despite a rib cartilage fracture that raised doubts about his availability.

The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is active in Week 3 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Chargers announced Sunday. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Herbert will start the game.

Herbert, 24, suffered a rib cartilage fracture in a Week 2 loss, but managed to finish the remainder of that game. That, coupled with 10 days to recover, led most — including Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell — to believe Herbert would be prepared to play in Week 3.

But after participating in practice on a limited basis Wednesday and Thursday, serious doubts about his availability were raised Friday when Herbert sat out the Chargers’ last practice of the week while Daniel took first-team reps. Herbert was ruled questionable and told reporters that a decision would be made Sunday about his ability to play in the game.

On Sunday morning, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that the Chargers medical team were encouraging Herbert to consider his long-term health when making his decision about Game 3.

While Herbert wasn’t seen participating in warmups Sunday and Chase Daniel was even announced as the starter during the announcer’s dress rehearsal, he was listed as active by the team an hour and a half before kickoff.

While the Chargers will have Herbert, the team will be without Keenan Allen, J.C. Jackson, and Corey Linsley.

The notable name in the Jaguars’ list of inactives is cornerback Shaquill Griffin.

Griffin didn’t appear on the injury report until Friday, when he was listed as questionable due to a hip injury.

Chargers rule Justin Herbert questionable for Week 3 vs. Jaguars

Chargers backup QB Chase Daniel took the first-team reps in practice Friday while Justin Herbert sat out.

The Los Angeles Chargers’ Pro Bowl quarterback Justin Herbert is questionable for Week 3 due to a rib injury.

Herbert, 24, suffered a rib cartilage fracture during a Week 2 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. While he reportedly looked like himself during a throwing session Tuesday, and participated in practice on a limited basis Wednesday and Thursday, he didn’t throw Friday and backup Chase Daniel was seen taking first-team reps in practice.

Earlier in the day, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said there was more concern about Herbert’s functionality as a passer rather than his ability to tolerate the pain from the injury. After his Friday practice, Herbert told reporters that his ribs feel good but a decision will be made Sunday whether he can play.

While Los Angeles called Herbert “day-to-day” all week, Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell told reporters Thursday that the team was expecting to see the third-year quarterback return in time to play in Week 3.

If Herbert is out of action, the Jaguars defense will face Daniel, who hasn’t started an NFL game since the 2019 season during his time with the Chicago Bears. Over the course of his 13-year career, Daniel has made just five starts with eight touchdown passes and seven interceptions.

The Chargers also ruled wide receiver Keenan Allen as questionable due to a hamstring injury and cornerback J.C. Jackson as doubtful with an ankle injury.

In two games this season, Herbert has six touchdown passes with one interception. Two years ago, he threw for 347 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 39-29 win against the Jaguars.

The only player on the Jaguars’ injury report is cornerback Shaquill Griffin, who is questionable with a hip injury.
