Anthony Richardson makes a big splash in his return to the Colts lineup

Anthony Richardson makes a big splash in his return to the Colts lineup after being benched for Joe Flacco

The 4th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Anthony Richardson made a serious comeback for the Colts this last weekend after previously being benched just three weeks ago. Richardson made a great first step in ensuring he remains the starter for the rest of the season with a big-time signature win over the New York Jets.

It goes without saying that Richardson looked much improved for the entirety of the contest against the New York Jets. With 20 completions on 30 attempts, netting 272 passing yards and a touchdown, Richardson was as efficient as he has been to this point in his career. Richardson, of course, also added to his stat line with his elite rushing abilities, posting 2 more touchdowns, including the game-winner in the 4th quarter.

This was a much-needed rebound for the young signal caller, who was the second first-round quarterback from his class, to experience a benching and then a swift resurgence. It’s likely Richardson will be the starter moving forward, and if he keeps his level of play equal to what he showed today, the Colts can be confident in their quarterback moving into the future.

Anthony Richardson becomes 2nd first-round quarterback from 2023 to be benched

Anthony Richardson becomes 2nd first-round quarterback from 2023 to be benched

It’s been a tough go for every quarterback from 2023 not named C.J. Stroud. With Bryce Young being benched after just two games into the 2024 season, the same fate has not befallen former 4th overall pick Anthony Richardson.

Richardson has struggled all season, both with staying healthy and playing at an acceptable level when he has been on the field. On the year Richardson has just 4 passing touchdowns to 7 interceptions, awarding him an abysmal quarterback rating of 57.2 on the season. The boiling point for Richardson came last week when he took himself out of the game on a 3rd and goal play because he was “tired”. While he clearly was exhausted given the previous few plays, many circles will not look kindly on any quarterback taking themselves out of the game at any level of football.

All this being said, it is not the end of Richardson’s story. The Indianapolis Colts knew they were taking a bit of a project when they drafted Richardson given he had not played very much at the collegiate level and missed most of last year. This will be a chance for Richardson to reset, learn, and come back likely later into this season and show the rewards of patience. Only time will tell if Richardson can put it all together, but it is certainly not a good start for the quarterbacks of the 2023 draft class.

Colts sixth-rounder leads all rookies with highest PFF preseason Week 1 grade

Colts sixth-rounder Micah Abraham leads all rookies with highest PFF preseason Week 1 grade

It’s not always the early-round slam dunk picks that win you games come the NFL season as more and more late-round rookies look to make an impact with their team and become key contributors. This may be the case with Colts’ sixth-round rookie Micah Abraham, who ended up being the highest-rated rookie in the league in the opening week of the preseason according to PFF.

Abraham only gave up one catch for 10 yards out of 16 coverage snaps, but it was a huge play against the run that led to his top ranking grade with PFF. Towards the end of the game, Abraham ripped the ball loose, recovered the fumble himself and then proceeded to return it for a touchdown.

If Abraham can keep up this high level of production in both air and run support, not only could he secure a roster spot, but perhaps see some serious regular season action. Abraham will have two more games to show off his talent, and this seems to be just he start of good things to come for the late round rookie.

Colts rookie QB Anthony Richardson’s season could be over

The Colts might have to finish the season without Anthony Richardson.

According to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, the rookie season of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Jr. might be over. Richardson suffered a shoulder injury and the Colts placed him on IR but now he could end up having season-ending surgery.

Richardson was off to a strong start in 2023. His raw athleticism is off the charts and his arm talent is elite. Richardson was playing with a ton of confidence but it was clear he opened himself up to far much contact with his style of play.

With Richardson out, the Colts have turned to Gardner Minshew to handle the offense. The Colts selected Richardson with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft.

Colts QB Anthony Richardson out for Week 3 vs Ravens

When the Indianapolis Colts take on the Baltimore Ravens this weekend, they will do it without rookie franchise quarterback Anthony Richardson. Richardson suffered a concussion in the Colts Week Two win over the Houston Texans. Richardson rushed for two touchdowns in that game before suffering the injury.

Richardson will once again be replaced in the starting lineup by Gardner Minshew. Minshew came in last week in relief of Richardson and played pretty well.

The Colts selected Richardson with the No. 4 overall pick out of the University of Florida. In two starts and less than two full games, Richardson has been responsible for 354 yards of offense and four total touchdowns. The Colts currently sit at 1-1.

Why Indianapolis Colts Will Win

Can Indianapolis throw at all?

The Minnesota secondary has been injured/bad/ineffective, getting hammered for close to 300 or more passing yards in each of the last five games and 297 or more in seven of the last eight.

Overall the Vikings are dead last in the NFL in total defense, last in pass defense, and the Colts have just enough with Matt Ryan – as rocky as he has been – to push for over 200 yards.

The idea is to get Jonathan Taylor and the ground game going to keep the Viking offense off the field, but Ryan, your table is ready.

However …

NFL Expert Picks Week 15

Why Minnesota Vikings Will Win

The Colts don’t have the personnel to keep up in a shootout if Taylor can’t get rolling.

Parris Campbell and Alec Pierce are nice, but it’s going to be more about spreading the offense around instead of bombing away deep. The Colts will get their yards, but they struggle to score – they’re second-worst in the NFL in scoring O, the defense doesn’t take it away enough, and the run defense can be moved on.

Minnesota’s loss to the Lions might have been rough, but the offense worked. The passing game clicked just fine, but now it’s time to get the running game going – the Colts have allowed 140 yards or more in each of the last three games, so …

What’s Going To Happen

The Vikings are 8-0 when running for 77 yards or more, and Indianapolis has allowed 77 or more in every game but two.

Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison will take the heat off the passing game, but the Vikings will be balanced enough to offset another awful day from the secondary.

The Colts are 3-0-1 when scoring 20 points or more, and they’ll get there. It still won’t be enough.
