Super confident Jalen Hurts says there’s nothing he can’t do in the Philadelphia Eagles offense
After a slow start to the season, the Eagles have won three straight games since starting the year out 2-2, and Jalen Hurts evolution at quarterback is a primary reason why.
Hurts has gone weeks without a turnover. He’s making plays from under center and targeting the opposition in the middle of the field. Following a recent practice ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Jaguars, a confident Hurts told the media that there’s nothing he can’t do in the Eagles’ offense.
Jalen Hurts on whether the offense is tailored to make him comfortable: “I don’t think there’s anything I can’t do. It’s a matter of saturating myself in it and working at it. You have different voices telling you what to do all the time — it’s challenging, naturally, but I can’t…
Heading into Week 9, Hurts has completed 132-191 attempts for 1,544 yards passing, a 69.1 completion percentage, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions.
He’s the sixth-ranked quarterback in the NFL in QBR and, again, one of the league leaders with seven rushing touchdowns.
There are three reasons for optimism as the Commanders face the Giants in Week 9.
The Washington Commanders travel up the East Coast on Sunday to face the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Under the tutelage of head coach Dan Quinn, the 6-2 Commanders are sitting solidly at the top of the NFC East, and that’s not likely to change this weekend.
There are three reasons for optimism heading into Week 9 when the Commanders face the Giants.
The Giants are struggling this season
The Giants may be a division rival, but their season has not gone the way they’d hoped. At 2-6, they sit not just at the bottom of the NFC East but the bottom of the entire NFC. Those struggles have reached the boiling point, and the locker room leaders are expressing their frustration, which never translates well on the field.
Any time a team is losing, team morale drops, players lose faith in their own ability and the ability of the players around them, trust goes out the window and games break down. This bodes well for the Commanders.
Commanders have momentum
After losing Jayden Daniels early in the Carolina Panthers game with a rib injury, backup quarterback Marcus Mariota handled business in Daniels’ stead. Daniels returned in Week 8 to lead the Commanders to a last-second victory on a successful Hail Mary pass, and the team is still riding the high of that win.
The Commanders are united behind Jayden Daniels and Dan Quinn, and that unity shows on the field. Everyone is on the same page, everyone knows their role and trusts their teammates to execute the plays that are called, and everyone wants to continue this whole winning thing. The Commanders aren’t used to that, but they like it and want to keep it going. That kind of determination is hard to beat.
Jayden Daniels isn’t the only player on the field
While rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has taken the league by storm, the Commanders do have other players on the field. Daniels doesn’t do it alone; he has some pretty talented players who can help him out. Terry McLaurin, Brian Robinson Jr., Noah Brown, Zach Ertz, Austin Ekeler, and more. Daniels does an excellent job leading these players down the field, but he doesn’t move the ball all on his own. He has a fantastic supporting cast, and the Giants simply won’t have answers for all of them.
The Eagles are advancing through preparation for Week 9 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the team will likely be without cornerback Darius Slay. Slay, who exited Sunday’s win with a groin injury, did not practice on Thursday.
Slay, who exited Sunday’s win with a groin injury, did not practice on Thursday. Isaiah Rodgers replaced him in the Bengals game, and he tipped a pass intended for wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase that led to an interception by safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
Defensively, defensive tackle Jalen Carter returned to practice after missing Wednesday with a shoulder injury. Carter played 45 snaps on Sunday, the most of any defensive lineman.
Dallas Goedert, who has a hamstring injury, is expected to miss his third straight game.
Goedert has missed the last two games after injuring his hamstring early in the Week 6 win over Cleveland and did not practice.
Landon Dickerson was limited with a knee injury, while Mekhi Becton looks ready to return to the lineup after missing a game with a concussion.
Becton suffered a concussion in the Week 7 win against the New York Giants and did not practice last week. Tyler Steen replaced Becton in the lineup.
Dickerson, meanwhile, played 58 snaps in Sunday’s win over the Bengals.

Jaguars will be without Christian Kirk and Brian Thomas Jr. for matchup vs. Eagles in Week 9
Doug Pederson’s Jacksonville Jaguars (2-6) are headed to Philadelphia to face the red-hot Eagles on Sunday afternoon, and they’ll be without their top two wide receivers.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Jaguars rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. could miss 2-4 weeks with a chest/rib injury suffered Sunday in the 30-27 loss to the Packers. Monday scans will determine the full extent and next steps, though.
The star rookie ranks tied for sixth in the NFL with 573 yards.

The news about Thomas follows news that Christian Kirk also suffered a fractured collarbone in the loss to Green Bay. Kirk, 27, will finish the 2024 season with 27 catches for 379 yards with one touchdown.
Jacksonville will now turn to veteran wideout Gabe Davis (18-217-2) and Parker Washington (6-67-0), while tight end Brenton Strange could see an uptick in targets.
Philadelphia Eagles’ CB Darius Slay will undergo MRI on groin to determine status for Week 9
The Eagles could be without Darius Slay in Week 9 after the star cornerback was forced to exit the win over the Bengals with a groin injury.
Slay became lame in the second half and was replaced by Isaiah Rodgers, who was opposite Quinyon Mitchell. During his most recent episode of the Big Play Slay podcast, the veteran cornerback said he’d have an MRI within the next few days to determine the severity of his injury.
Slay logged 41 snaps before departing and finished with four tackles and one big pass breakup that prevented a touchdown catch. If Slay were to miss an extended time, Philadelphia would have depth at the cornerback spot and could turn to Isaiah Rodgers and Kelee Ringo, who are available for Week 9 against the Jaguars.

Higgins has 29 receptions for 341 yards, and three touchdowns in five games played this season. His 5.8 receptions per game are a career-high, and his 68.2 yards per game is the highest since 2021.
