Florida State vs Miami Game Preview

Why Florida State Will Win

Forget for a moment that Miami might have its main man back at quarterback – there’s a bigger issue in play for the Canes.

The run defense hasn’t seen anything like this.

The stats are good, the Miami defensive front is great at getting into the backfield, and yet it’s about to deal with a ground attack that’s been able to work against good teams and bad.

Even in the three game losing streak before the win over Georgia Tech, the Noles were able to get their guys in space to tear off big run after big run against Clemson and NC State, cranking up over 200 rushing yards in each game.

Combine the ACC’s best ground attack with the ACC’s best downfield passing game – the Noles average over 14 yards per completion – and the Miami defense that dealt with the North Carolina offense, and that’s about it, will be under siege.

But …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Miami Will Win

QB Tyler Van Dyke should be back from his shoulder injury.

All indications are that he’ll give it a go, and that’s a must for a Miami offense without a ground game to rely on. The passing attack has to work for the run-less offense to move, and it will.

The Florida State defense has been solid. The pass rush is good, but that shouldn’t bother Van Dyke. He’ll be able to spread it around to get to at least 200 yards with a few scores, but the team will need a few breaks.

The Noles aren’t horrible when it comes to turnovers, but they’re getting walloped by penalties with ten or more in their last three games. Miami is good enough on third downs on both sides of the ball to take advantage of every flag to keep things moving.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Florida State will have too much offensive balance.

It’ll start with the ground game that will generate gashing runs, and it’ll continue with an efficient passing attack that will should be able to keep pace with whatever Van Dyke can produce.

Turnovers will mean everything. Miami has turned it over 14 times in the four losses and twice in the four wins. FSU doesn’t come up with a ton of takeaways, but it’ll get two in this.

Georgia Tech vs Florida State Game Preview

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Can the offense get the running game going?

In what should be a lost season after losing head coach Geoff Collins early on, the team has managed to find something positive and even push for a possible bowl bid with two wins in its last three games.

What went right? The offense was able to pound away a bit and everything else fell into place. It’s not like the Yellow Jackets have to rumble for 300 yards, either. They’re 3-0 when running for over 125 yards and 0-4 when they don’t.

The Florida State run defense isn’t bad, but the team is on a three-game losing streak, and why?

A few reasons, but allowing over 160 rushing yards in each of the three didn’t help.

Georgia Tech has to run well and rely on turnover margin – it’s +10 on the year – to get by. But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Florida State Will Win

Georgia Tech isn’t Clemson, NC State, or Wake Forest.

The Yellow Jackets might be playing better, but they’re not among the stars of the ACC this year like those three are. Florida State played relatively well over the last three games, but the teams on the other side were just a bit better.

The Noles are still running well and should hit 200 yards on the ground, and on the other side there’s no worry about the anything happening through the air.

FSU should be able to load up and hold Georgia Tech to under four yards per carry, and the ACC’s second-best pass defense should take care of the rest – especially with Tech starting quarterback nursing a sprained foot.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Florida State will get back on track at home.

Georgia Tech is a tough out, but it’s not going to do enough with the passing attack, the ground game won’t go off, and the Noles will be too balanced. As long as FSU keeps the giveaway to two and can be -1 or better in turnover margin, it’ll have done its job.

Clemson vs Florida State Game Preview

Why Clemson Will Win

The offense is getting more consistent.

The passing game was hardly sharp in the win over Boston College, but it didn’t need to be great to pull that off. The O is hitting the 200-yard mark through the air every week, the running game has find a nice groove to balance things out, and the turnovers have been kept to a bare minimum.

Florida State’s defense is able to hold up – it did a nice job of keeping the Wake Forest machine from going crazy – but the O has stalled.

The Seminoles have to get to 400 yards of total offense to pull this off. It didn’t get there against LSU and almost lost late, and it didn’t get there in the losses to Wake Forest and NC State.

Clemson gave up over 400 to Wake Forest in the crazy firefight – and won – but that’s it from a next-level talented bunch allowing just 320 yards per game.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Florida State Will Win

Can Jordan Travis pick apart the Clemson secondary?

The Tiger defensive backs get a bad rap because everyone saw the Wake Forest passing game go off against them, but they’ve been solid against everyone else. However, Travis has the ability to get going with the midrange throws, and he’s deadly when he gets into a rhythm.

The Seminoles have to move fast. They can’t give the Clemson defensive front time to be disruptive in the backfield, they’ve got to get their backs on the outside in a hurry where they can rip off yards in chunks like they did against NC State, and they have to keep pressing.

Yeah, DJ Uiagalelei has been good, and the Clemson passing attack has been better, but Florida State – even with a loss to Wake Forest on the slate – is still No. 1 in the ACC in pass defense, the pass rush is good enough, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Clemson is starting to find its swagger.

It might not be at the level it was a few years ago, but it’s grinding its way through, the offense is at least decent – that’s a huge step after 2021 – and the defense is doing the rest.

The secondary will have a few problems against Travis and the FSU passing game, but the linebackers will keep the big runs to a minimum.

The Clemson gameplan will continue. Be consistent, keep on finishing off drives, and control the lines. Florida State will be great in the first quarter, but the steadiness of the Tigers will come through.

Florida State vs NC State Game Preview

Why Florida State Will Win

The Seminoles need to get the running game going again.

They struggled on the ground in the 31-21 loss to Wake Forest last week with the lowest total of the season – 112 yards – partly because the passing game took over. NC State has an amazing run defense, but the carries have to keep coming.

The Florida State running game is the trickle that leads to the waterfall. The passing game is steady and solid, but the attack works when the big dashes are there. The offense can be patient for the big plays if the defense does its job.

The FSU pass rush is great, the pass defense hasn’t been bad, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why NC State Will Win

Can the NC State run defense hold up?

Clemson was able to pound and pound and pound on the NC State D last week in a 30-20 win. It ran a season-high 38 times for 145 yards – the most the Wolfpack allowed all year – and FSU was held to under 140 yards against LSU and Wake Forest.

No, the State offense hasn’t been as dominant as it should be and it hasn’t been all the explosive, but there’s a nice system in place. There aren’t a slew of turnovers – the seven have been spread out over the five games – and the defense takes care of the rest.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

NC State will bounce back fast.

There’s nothing all that pretty with the Wolfpack style, but it’s effective. They’ll own the lines, be good against the run, and they’ll win enough third down moments to keep the momentum.

Florida State will get a good day out of QB Jordan Travis, but again, it needs to run well to win. There will be a few good dashes on a couple of scoring drives, but there won’t be enough of them.

Florida State vs Wake Forest Game Preview

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Sam Hartman almost pulled it off.

Clemson is Clemson – it had the defense and it had the guys to pull off the 51-45 win last week over the Demon Deacons – but Hartman balled out with his third straight 300-yard game since returning from the blood clot issue and hit the Tigers for six touchdown passes and a slew of deep plays.

Florida State hasn’t seen anything like Hartman and the Wake Forest passing game.

Jayden Daniels was able to hit the midrange passes in LSU’s loss to the Noles, and he almost pulled off the win with a late rally. Louisville’s Malik Cunningham threw for 243 yards, and even Boston College’s dying offense was able to connect on a slew of short range throws.

Florida State has to get ready to crank up the offense, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Florida State Will Win

Can the Wake Forest defense hold up?

The pass rush is good, and the run defense hasn’t been too bad, but DJ Uiagalelei came up with a terrific passing day for Clemson. Now it’s Jordan Travis’s turn.

He might not be the flashiest of quarterbacks in a huge year for the position, but the veteran has been accurate, he’s coming up with the explosive downfield plays, and his team is 4-0 after he bombed away for over 300 yards in the 44-14 win over Boston College.

As good as Travis is, the FSU passing game isn’t going to be able to keep up yard for yard with what Hartman brings, but it’s the rushing attack that should take over.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Seminoles lead the ACC in rushing, they’re great at controlling the ball and the tempo, and they’ll have the O on the field for over 35 minutes.

And the weather? After so much worry and concern about Hurricane Ian pummeling Tallahassee, it shifted away. It’s going to be in the mid-80s with minimal wind and little chance of rain.

The conditions will be perfect for a shootout. Florida State will come up with more from the running game to take over late in the thriller.
