Wake Forest vs NC State Game Preview

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Demon Deacon offense won’t turn it over eight times this week.

The passing game threw for over 300 yards against Louisville, the defense was okay, and it all melted down with eight giveaways in the strange 48-21 loss.

The Cardinals were also helped by a great day from the running game, but that was a bit of an anomaly. NC State isn’t running well, it needs to get the passing attack going fast, and it wouldn’t be bad if the defense could take the ball away a bit.

NC State is 1-2 when it doesn’t hit 100 rushing yards, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why NC State Will Win

Wake Forest will give up more than 100 yards on the ground, but NC State will have to win this defensively.

The Wolfpack offense has been okay with freshman MJ Morris rising up against Virginia Tech, but the passing game has to keep up with Sam Hartman and a Wake Forest attack that will try to erase last week in a hurry.

NC State’s defense leads the ACC in third down stops, it’s No. 1 in scoring defense, and the pass defense is doing a great ob of holding down the good passers on the slate.

As good as Wake Forest’s offense is, it probably won’t go off.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Wake Forest will want to make this a bit of a firefight, and NC State has to keep the score low and slow. The Wolfpack defense will be great, but Sam Hartman and the Demon Deacon offense will come up with a few key scores in the second half to survive.

There will be two Wake Forest turnovers. There won’t be eight.

Duke vs Boston College Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

Boston College is having problems.

It’s one thing to not be able to do much against Clemson or Wake Forest, but getting thumped by UConn last week 13-3 was a low point.

What’s going wrong? The running game is easily the worst in the country, and the passing attack that’s supposed to make everything go isn’t doing enough to pick up the slack.

There are way too many turnovers, there aren’t enough takeaways, now the O is dealing with a Duke defense that hasn’t been too bad.

Boston College is 2-0 when throwing for 300 yards or more and 0-6 when it doesn’t. But …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Boston College Will Win

The passing game should click. It might not go off for a bazillion yards, but it should get to at least 250 without a problem and it might just hit the 300-yard mark.

How did the struggling Eagles get by Louisville a few weeks ago? The passing game was good, the defense came up with one of its better performances of the season, and there’s a shot it goes off – Duke’s pass rush is just okay.

Duke needs its ground game to do well. It lost to North Carolina in a wild shootout – the rushing attack came close to 300 yards – but it won the other five games when it came up with 170 yards or more. Boston College has only allowed that many twice.

Here’s the problem …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Turnvers.

Boston College is -8 in turnover margin, Duke is +14.

Duke doesn’t have a ton of talent, but the offense is good enough to get by however it needs to, and the takeaways are coming in bunches with eight against Miami last week and two more in every game but two.

Boston College doesn’t force enough takeaways to matter.

Miami vs Duke Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

The Blue Devils might have lost three of their last four, but they’re playing well.

The last two losses were by three points each, the offense picked it back up with a good balance against North Carolina, and the passing game continues to be effective.

The team doesn’t beat itself. There aren’t a ton of penalties, the four turnovers have been spread out, and the special teams are good enough to not be a problem.

Meanwhile, Miami is sputtering along.

Oh sure, it stopped a three-game losing slide with a win over Virginia Tech, but it was hardly dominant – even though the two touchdowns allowed in the 20-14 win came late.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Miami Will Win

Can Miami bomb its way to a win?

The secondary will give up at least 250 yards, but it’s possible to hit the Blue Devil pass defense that struggled against North Carolina’s Drake Maye and Jalon Daniels of Kansas.

QB Tyler Van Dyke doesn’t have to take a ton of chances. He has to hit at least 65% of his throws and keep everything moving against the ACC’s worst defense on third downs.

Yes, Duke hasn’t been bad in the losses over the last month, but the passing production hasn’t been consistent and the run defense has been a bit spotty.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Miami doesn’t do anything easy.

Scoring is like pulling teeth at times, but the passing game is good enough to pile up the yards and respond better than Duke will.

Both teams will keep it close in a back-and-forth fight, but it’ll all come down to whether or not the Hurricanes can keep the turnovers to a minimum.

Duke will have its chances late – the running game will take over at times in the second half – but Miami will hold on for dear life.

North Carolina vs Duke Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

The Tar Heels played a little … defense?

No, not really in the 27-24 win over Miami – they gave up 538 yards – but they held firm when they had to. It’s a low bar, but that’s the goal for the Tar Heel D – just hold serve and let the offense do the rest.

Drake Maye continues to be one of the brightest young quarterback stars in the ACC, the running game is chipping in a little to help out, and after all of the drama and all of the close calls and all of the problems on defense, the team is 5-1.

Duke couldn’t get the O going until it was way too late in a puzzling loss to Georgia The. The attack that was so good over the first month fizzled, but the bigger problem here is the lack of a pass rush to help out the secondary.

There’s a big problem when teams don’t get pressure on Maye, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Duke Will Win

The North Carolina defense. It really is the cure for offenses that need a pick-me-up.

It’s the worst in the ACC by a mile, the pass defense has issues, and overall it’s allowing 465 yards and 32 points per game.

Duke has enough of a passing attack to take advantage of it all. As long as the offense isn’t turning the ball over – and it doesn’t – it should be able to get its production back.

Keeping the chains moving and keeping Maye and company off the field is a must, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Duke has the one defense in the ACC that’s worse on third downs than North Carolina.

Duke will get a big day from the offense, but the defensive side that hasn’t dealt with a high-powered attack – Kansas sort of counts, but doesn’t – is about to have a long day.

Both teams got bogged down a wee bit last week. In this the points will flow in a fun back-and-forth rivalry game. North Carolina will get just a bit more out of the attack for a full 60 minutes.

Georgia Tech vs Duke Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

Kansas is hogging the surprise team spotlight, but Duke needs to be right there – even though it lost to the Jayhawks 35-27.

New head coach Mike Elko has instantly helped boost up an offense that’s balanced, doesn’t give the ball away, and is getting shocking great play out of the offensive front.

Get the ball out of the quarterback’s hands, get the backs in space, don’t allow plays in the backfield. That’s what the Blue Devils are doing, and if they can keep it up they negate Georgia Tech’s one big thing.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The Yellow Jacket defense can get behind the line.

They didn’t do it too much in the shocking win over Pitt, but they’ve got the pieces to create negative plays and force turnovers.

Duke might be great at keeping defenses from being disruptive, but Georgia Tech has to hurry things up a little more.

Under interim head coach Brent Key, the plan has been to one up the offense more turn the stars loose, and see what happens. The result was a 232-yard rushing day against Pitt and a win – even if QB Jeff Sims struggled.

The same has to apply here. Get the ground game going right away against a Duke defense that got ripped on by Kansas – and has been a bit off here and there against others – and the defense has to …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Force turnovers.

Georgia Tech was +3 in turnover margin against Pitt, and there’s the problem. Again, Duke doesn’t turn the ball over with just two lonely inconsequential interceptions on the season.

This is a more fun Yellow Jacket team now, but it won’t be able to hold down the Duke balance on offense and won’t get the mistakes needed to pull this off.
