20 for 2020 key college football offseason topics: No. 8. The top Power Five conference quarterback battles.

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

With no spring football, the battles for the starting quarterback jobs are going to be more interesting than ever.

Whenever there’s college football again, it’s going to be a mad dash to figure out who’s ready to step up and shine at the most important position. Throw in the transfer portal and grad transfer aspect of this, and this list can and will change around wildly over the next several months.

Which Power Five quarterback situations are the most interesting? Here we go, starting with …

ACC: Duke Blue Devils

The Blue Devils went from Daniel Jones under center, to Quentin Harris, and the results were sensational …

For a while.

Harris was a dominant passing force over the first four games of the season, but the offense stalled as the year went on, and he finished with just 16 touchdown passes with 11 interceptions after throwing ten scoring throws in the first four games.

Harris is gone, and the heir apparent should be Chris Katrenick, the No. 2 guy last year who only completed 3-of-13 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown with a pick. He’s a 6-3, 215-pound passer with the upside to shine as David Cutcliffe’s quarterback, but it’s going to be a fight.

6-3, 190-pound redshirt freshman Gunnar Holmberg is an elite athlete, but who can do a little bit of everything, but he’s coming off a knee injury. Once practices kick in, his mobility will be a big part of the puzzle.

And then there’s the wild card. Clemson transfer Chase Brice.

The guy who saved the day two years ago for the Tigers in the win over Syracuse wasn’t going to see the light of day again as long as Trevor Lawrence could stay in one piece, but he’s looking to fill the void at Duke, take the gig, and potentially be a statistical star under Cutcliffe.

ACC Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which ACC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?

Which ACC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

Contact @PeteFiutak

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which ACC schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit – that’s obviously a huge deal in the ACC – but football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

The worst-to-best ACC schools in 2019-2020 in college football and college basketball …

Duke (20-3) vs. Florida State (20-3) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Florida State Will Win

The offense cranked it back up.

After a few tough battles with Virginia and a fight with North Carolina, the O took off against Miami and didn’t slow down.

It’s not just the great offense that’s keeping the Seminoles in the top ten and in the hunt for the ACC title – the big plays on defense and stops are triggering the easy points.

This is the one team that can hang with Duke when it comes to blocking shots, forcing takeaways, and being able to keep up the scoring pace for a full 40 minutes.

How did North Carolina almost get Duke? It was far better from the field, it was great at holding down the Blue Devils from the outside, and it dominated the rebuilding battle.

FSU can do all of that. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Duke Will Win

North Carolina pitched as strong a game as possible, and it still wasn’t enough to win.

The Blue Devils are far better on the boards than FSU, and they’re better from the field than the showed against the Tar Heels. In this, it’s going to be the defense from the perimeter that should be the difference.

FSU doesn’t have to hit from three to win, but it’s going to struggle a whole lot more than it did against Miami – it’s not going to hit 50% against the Blue Devils.

What’s Going To Happen

Not that it matters, but the winner takes a step up to push Louisville for the honor of possibly being the ACC regular season champ.

The difference will be the offensive rebounds. The Blue Devils will get just a few more second chances in a blast of a back-and-forth fight. Expect several momentum swings and a whole lot of energy.

Duke (19-3) vs. North Carolina (10-12) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Duke Will Win

This isn’t all that hard. North Carolina isn’t good at shooting, it’s awful at shooting from three, it’s not doing anything to force mistakes defensively, and it’s not helping itself when it gets to the line.

Other than that, everything is going great in this brutal Tar Heel 4-11 run in the last 15 games.

On the other side, Duke is hitting everything, connecting on 48% from the field helped by dominating the offensive boards. It’s connecting from three when it has to, and its defense is forcing enough mistakes to get a whole lot of easy points. However …

[lawrence-related id=507556]

Why North Carolina Will Win

The Tar Heels can still rebound.

For all the problems they’re having, and with all of the losses, they’re still crushing everyone on the boards – that’s what they do.

They lead the nation with 43 rebounds per game, and while Duke hits the boards hard, it’s about to get pushed around a bit. As long as the UNC D isn’t giving up a slew of easy points on offensive rebounds, it should be able to stay alive just enough to make this interesting.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Duke vs. North Carolina. It’s going to be close for a while just because of the intensity of the rivalry. And then the Tar Heel offense will go cold for a long stretch and that will be the end of that.

Duke’s defense will do more than North Carolina’s to stay ahead easily late in the second half.

Miami (6-5) vs. Duke (4-7) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Miami Will Win

Duke seems to have moved on from this whole playing college football thing for 2019.

The team was doing just fine with a 4-2 start, and then the wheels came off on offense, the defense couldn’t make up for it, and now it’s on a five-game losing streak.

The problem? Three words …

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

They were a problem to start the season, they stopped for a little while, and then they started flowing again and haven’t stopped.

In the seven losses this year, Duke has given the ball away an impressive 25 times. Against FBS teams it’s 3-0 when it doesn’t give up any turnovers, but …

It’s Turnover Chain time.

Miami is painfully inconsistent, but it’s also terrific when it decides it wants to play focused and angry. After the loss to FIU last week – the Canes were -3 in turnover margin – get ready for that all to flip.

Be stunned if the Canes aren’t at least a +2.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Duke Will Win

It’s not like the Blue Devils are facing Stephen F. Austin.

Miami’s running game was spotty to begin with, and now it doesn’t have leading rusher DeeJay Dallas, who suffered an injury in the loss to FIU.

The ground game hasn’t hit 200 yards this season against an FBS team, and it failed to hit 100 yards in a run of five games in six. Even worse, the Canes haven’t rushed for multiple scores in and game so far against an FBSer.

Considering the run D has been an issue this season for Duke, it’s getting a break. It’s also getting a week off from worrying about third down conversions.

Miami was already miserable on the money downs, and then it converted just one of ten tries against FIU last week. On the year, the Canes are second-worst in college football on third downs, converting just 27% of the time.

What’s Going To Happen

This would’ve been the perfect spot for Duke to snap out of it and play like it did earlier in the season … except for that Miami loss to FIU.

The Canes will get a 300-yard passing game from Jarren Williams – without all the mistakes he made against FIU – and the defense will rise up on the road with a dominant performance.

At least, it’ll dominate when it comes to the takeaways.

Wake Forest (7-3) vs. Duke (4-6) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The big shot to do something special against Clemson is gone – losing 52-3 – and now Wake Forest can make a big push to close strong and have a shot at the Orange Bowl.

If Clemson goes to the College Football Playoff, the next-highest ranked ACC team would go to the Orange. There isn’t a ranked team now, but if the Demon Deacons close out with wins over Duke and Syracuse to finish 9-3, there’s an outside shot they could get the ACC’s biggest bowl tie-in.

The offense has fallen flat over the last two weeks, but that’s because it’s had to deal with the Tigers along with a hot Virginia Tech defense.

Duke doesn’t have a hot defense, or a hot anything.

The Blue Devils have totally collapsed over the last month in an 0-4 run, getting outscored by a combined score of 155-44.

And why? Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

The Blue Devil offense has fallen flat, but the 13 giveaways over the last four games, and a whopping total of 22 in the six losses, have made things easy.

Along with a killer offense that still leads the ACC in third down conversions, Wake Forest is a +6 on the year in turnover margin.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Duke Will Win

Enough, Duke. It’s time to start throwing again.

Wake Forest might have a high-powered offense that’s been able to answer the call time and again against the mediocre teams, but the secondary can get bombed on.

The Demon Deacon defense has allowed 242 yards or more and 15 touchdowns in five of the last six games, and it’ll get lit up from time to time by the offenses that like to push the ball deep.

That’s not necessarily Duke, but the possibility is there to dink and dunk, keep dinking and dunking, and chip away at a secondary that can get picked apart. Elon and NC State are the only two teams to not hit 60% of their throws against this group.

There’s still talent on this O to make things happen against the porous defense, but …

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

The Blue Devils are broken.

The offense is working way too hard to get to 300 yards and stay in games, and now the team is desperate to win its last two to get bowl eligible.

It won’t be able to keep up with Wake Forest.

The Demon Deacons still have to prove they can win and keep the offense moving without star WR Sage Surratt, who’s out for the year, but there are still enough weapons to pull ahead early and force Duke’s O to work again.

It will, to a point, but it won’t be consistent enough to keep pace.

Why Syracuse Will Win

Duke’s offense has picked a bad time to take a break.

The offense that was so sharp early in the year has suffered a power outage, failing to score more than 17 points in any of the last three games after scoring 30 or more in the previous five.

The passing game doesn’t have anything happening down the field – the dinking and midrange passes aren’t going anywhere – and the ground game hasn’t been able to get over four yards per pop in any of the last five games.

The Syracuse defense needs the break.

For all of the problems on both sides of the ball, the Orange are great at taking the ball away, and they should be able to generate a few easy scoring opportunities against a Duke offense that’s way too happy to give the ball away.

The Orange have turned it over 16 times in the last five games.

Why Duke Will Win

The Syracuse offense isn’t doing enough.

On a four-game losing streak, the Orange have yet to beat a Power Five team, they’re winless in ACC play, and they’re not going on enough long and sustained drives.

That’s because the offensive line isn’t doing anything.

Syracuse is still dead last in the nation in sacks allowed, the running game is averaging just three yards per carry, and even when Tommy DeVito has a good game – he threw for 289 yards and three scores against Boston College two weeks ago – it isn’t enough.

Despite all of the recent problems, Duke has enough decent offensive parts that can move the ball however it wants against this Orange D. This is the game for the Blue Devils to try cranking up that passing game again – it should work if Quinten Harris can get hot early.

What’s Going To Happen

Duke will start to look the part again. Harris will hit over 60% of his passes, the offense will keep things moving enough to keep the Orange O off the field, and the slide will finally stop.

The Blue Devils will get the win they have to have, and then need to win one of their final two games against Wake Forest and Miami to become bowl eligible.
