UConn (0-1) vs Holy Cross (0-0) Game Preview

Why Holy Cross Will Win

It was only a four-game run, but the Crusaders were solid going 3-1 in the FCS spring session with a great rushing offense that controlled the tempo. They didn’t turn the ball over enough to matter, the run defense was solid, and now almost everyone comes back for the 2021 run.

Meanwhile, UConn couldn’t get much of anything working in the 45-0 loss to Fresno State to start the season. The defense missed a few key tackles early to blow it open, the running game averaged just 1.1 yards per carry, and overall the O generated just 107 yards.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why UConn Will Win

Silver lining time – UConn got a game in.

It might have been a rough run against Fresno State, and there weren’t many positives to come out of it, but the run defense wasn’t all that bad – it didn’t allow a slew of big gashes.

Holy Cross doesn’t have much of a passing offense and doesn’t have the type of attack that will keep pressing and making big things happen. As long as the Huskies don’t start turning the ball over in bunches for easy scores, they should be able to hold up defensively.

Week 1 College Football Schedule, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not going to be a breeze, but UConn will get its first win since late October 2019 and its third win as a program since October of 2017.

The running game will be good enough to control the clock, but it’ll be the defense that comes up with a strong performance to keep the Holy Cross ground attack in check. The Crusaders won’t have the passing game to make up for the problems running the ball.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UConn (0-0) vs Fresno State (0-0) Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

Give the Huskies this – they’re rested.

They’ve had a year off – the program opted out on the 2020 season – and didn’t get a chance to do a whole lot this spring, but the running game should work right away.

Fresno State might return a whole slew of defensive parts, but it was miserable last year against the run – the pressure is on the linebacking corps to produce right away.

UConn’s Kevin Mensah is a strong, quick back who should be able to handle the work behind a line that was very young – and very bad – in 2019 and, again, had plenty of time over the last year to work.

However …

Why Fresno State Will Win

The Fresno State defense should be better, and it starts with former Boise State Bronco Tyson Maeva, a 6-0, 240-pound thumper of a linebacker who should fix the glitch. It’s the other side of the ball that should make the most noise.

Head coach Kalen DeBoer might have had a few ups and downs in his first season, but his offense rocked. Former Washington star recruit Jake Haener ripped it up late last year – he turned into a 300-yard machine – and he shouldn’t have any issues against the spotty UConn secondary.

The Huskies should be even rougher against the run, and that’s where veteran Ronnie Rivers should come in with a huge opener along with the rest of the deep Bulldog backfield.

What’s Going To Happen

Fresno State’s offense is going to do whatever it wants.

The defense will be what makes the coaching staff happy – it’ll show a big improvement from 2020 – but that’s because UConn will struggle. Fresno State will get off to a great early start and won’t have any problem putting this away before the fourth quarter.

UConn Huskies College Football Preview 2021: Offense

Welcome to life as an independent, even if it’s a year late. The team that ended up doing next to nothing offensively in its last year in the American Athletic Conference still has a whole lot of question marks and work to do, and not being able to do much this spring didn’t help, either. So …

– The Huskies have several options all in the mix for the quarterback gig. Anyone who can provide a spark – and not throw a bazillion interceptions – will likely get the call. Sophomore Jack Zergiotis was thrown to the wolves in 2019 and threw for 1,782 yards and nine scores with 11 picks, 6-4, 225-pound junior Micah Leon comes in from NC State to make a push, and 6-4, 216-pound sophomore Steven Krajewski are all in the mix.

Leading receiver Cameron Ross returns after making a team-high 60 catches two years ago. Second-leading receiver Ardell Brown is gone, but just about everyone else of note in the receiving corps who caught a pass returns, but …

Running back Art Thompkins is gone – he was the second-leading receiver with 39 catches – but leading rusher Kevin Mensah is back after running for over 1,000 yards and nine scores. The rest of the backfield is unproven, but Mensah will be the workhorse.

The offensive line didn’t do much for the ground game and was even worse in pass protection. On the plus side, it was a very young group in 2019 that had a full year in the weight room. However, the one good blocker from two years ago – Matt Peart – is off being a New York Giant, and there’s not a ton of size up front.

2021 CFN Independent Preseason Rankings

1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Quick Take: There’s a consistency to the Irish now under Brian Kelly with four straight double-digit win seasons and five in the last six, and this year’s team should get there again with a schedule that’s a wee bit easier than it looks. The defensive ends are good, S Kyle Hamilton is great, and the success will be there on offense even if it’s more steady than sensational.
Notre Dame Preview | Schedule

2. Liberty Flames

Quick Take: Just about everyone is back, the skill guys around star QB Malik Willis are outstanding, and there’s a buzz after a breakthrough 2020. Talent-wise it’s a good team, but there’s a little national roll-slowing needing to be done when comparing it to the top 25ish Power Five programs. However, with the veterans in place – and with a manageable schedule – another one-loss season is a doable goal.
Liberty Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532590]

3. BYU Cougars

Quick Take: If was the common refrain last year – “But they didn’t play a Power Five program.” Well, now they do – it wasn’t the Cougars’ fault that no one wanted to play them, by the way – and without Zach Wilson under center. This is still a terrific team with plenty of great parts, but the schedule is tougher – seven Power Five teams on the slate – and there’s some reloading to do.
BYU Preview | Schedule

4. Army Black Knights

Quick Take: Expect a fantastic record thanks to a manageable schedule, but, as always, the O will control the clock and tempo against just about everyone. Also, as always, they’re going to be a very, very tough out for the better teams on the schedule.
Army Preview | Schedule

5. New Mexico State Aggies

Quick Take: The Aggies had the benefit of a spring preseason with a few games to see what they have in place to work with. The answers weren’t all that great, but they have a few explosive parts and should have just enough of an offense to pull off a few wins.
New Mexico Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532468]

6. UConn Huskies

Quick Take: After not playing last year, this is almost a new team in several spots around a few terrific parts. There are just enough good players to build around, but it’s going to be a rough, rough run saved by two FCS games and a few more winnable dates.
UConn Preview | Schedule

7. UMass Minutemen

Quick Take: The bar is set at just scoring. The Minutemen went 0-4 last year against four Group of Five programs, and they were outscored 161-12 with just one touchdown. The defensive side has some decent parts, but it’s going to be a bloodbath offensively over the first half of the season before things ease up.

2021 Preseason CFN Independent Offensive Player of the Year

QB Malik Willis, Jr. Liberty

The former Auburn Tiger has turned into a superstar and interesting pro prospect for Liberty. He’s not huge, but the 6-1, 215-pounder is one of the nation’s top dual-threat playmakers, throwing for well over 2,000 yards with 20 touchdowns along with 944 rushing yards and 14 scores last season. He’s got everyone around him to do even more.

2021 Preseason CFN Independent Defensive Player of the Year

S Kyle Hamilton, Jr. Notre Dame

Hamilton might not be the best defensive player in college football, but he’s not far off. When it comes to what you want in a next-level safety, here you go – 6-4, 219-pound size, big-time hitting skills, range, and the smarts and instincts to always be in the right position. He’s about to get an even higher profile as the star of a rebuilding Irish team.

UConn vs Maryland Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Maryland Will Win

The Terps might be limping into this after losing three of their last four games, but …

There’s no getting around it. They’re struggling – you don’t lose to Northwestern and Penn State if everything is super.

However, they have the makeup to push through the first round as long as they’re hitting from the outside.

This is a very, very, very momentum-streaky team. It doesn’t take the world for Maryland to look fantastic, and it all starts with the three.

It was devastating from the outside in a loss to Michigan in a late December game, but that’s Michigan – whatever. The Terps are 8-0 against everyone else when they hit better than 38% from three, and they’re 12-3 overall when they’re just 35% or better.

UConn allowed more than 35% from three in two of its last three games, and it lost in the Big East Tournament even though Creighton couldn’t hit a thing at times from the outside.

2021 NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions

Why UConn Will Win

This is a nasty team on the offensive glass.

The Huskies don’t have a ton of size, but they’re not small, and they attack everything on the glass really, really hard.

It’s one of the best teams in the nation in offensive rebounds, and Maryland has a bizarre ability to occasionally go into lapses on the glass – it’s one of the worst teams in college basketball on the offensive boards.

So going back to the positives for the Terps, if UConn can force a slew of misses from the outside – it’s generally a terrific team at getting out on the three – and if Maryland isn’t hitting at least 35% of its shots from the outside, that’s it. The possession is one-and-done.

College Basketball Experts Picks For UConn vs Maryland

What’s Going To Happen

Can Maryland pull up out of the nosedive?

It had its moments over the second half of the season, but there wasn’t enough of a scoring punch – it was a grind just to get close to 65 points – and it’s not going to all of a sudden go off against this UConn defense.

But it’ll make more threes.

UConn has to win on the boards, and if it does, it won’t be by enough to matter. This is going to be a low scoring game that gets ugly at times, but Maryland will make eight threes, and UConn will make five.

Creighton (19-7) vs UConn (15-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why UConn Will Win

Very, very quietly, UConn has been on a roll with five straight wins and seven in the last eight games.

The team is shooting well, it’s hitting its free throws, and it’s been playing nasty enough D and rebounding just about everything. It comes into this without being taxed in a 94-60 win over DePaul in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals – it was up by 23 at halftime – in an air-tight game.

The Huskies couldn’t hit from three and still won by 34.

There are plenty of blocked shot, the defense is the best in the Big East, and …

Why Creighton Will Win

Creighton rolled 74-66 in the last meeting and won in overtime in the first one back in December.

The Bluejays have had their issues over the last several games, but it rolled Butler 87-56 in the quarterfinal with the three point shooting on fire.

UConn might be outstanding at stopping teams from three, but Creighton was able to score from everywhere else in both games. It might not have always been easy, but if the Bluejays can start hitting early on and make the Huskies start firing away to keep up, the pace will be just right.

What’s Going To Happen

UConn is an interesting team in the tournament. Georgetown might be getting most of the attention for knocking Villanova out, but the Huskies have the makeup to finally get by Creighton and pull this off.

The Bluejays, though, will do just enough from three to overcome a few good scoring runs in a fun fight that will likely determine the Big East championship.

UConn (10-5) vs Villanova (13-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why UConn Will Win

Did the Huskies find their groove?

They’re trying to get hot at just the right time to make a big push to get into the fun in Indianapolis, and they’re going to ramp up the intensity that much more after coming up with two straight wins.

They were great from three against Xavier and Providence, and that’s the key. When they hit 40% or more from the outside they’re 6-0, and Villanova is one of the worst teams in America at guarding from three.

Opposing teams are connecting on 38% from the outside against the Wildcats, and even better, the Huskies are amazing at getting on the offensive boards.

Keep shooting from the outside, hope to generate second chances points, and keep up the pressure. But …

Why Villanova Will Win

Yeah, UConn will be fired up, but Villanova will be extra motivated, too, after a clunker of a blowout loss at Creighton a week ago.

Yeah, the Wildcats are bad at guarding from three, but UConn doesn’t jack up enough from the outside to keep up if and when the machine gets going.

The Huskies might make their threes, but they can’t match Villanova shot for shot if this gets into any sort of a shooting contest.

The UConn defense doesn’t force turnovers, and the defensive rebounds aren’t there to go long with its ability to hit the offensive glass.

What’s Going To Happen

No, really, Villanova has been awful at guarding from three, and it proved costly in the loss last weekend.

The Wildcats have allowed four of the last five opponents and six of the last eight to hit 40% or more from three, and UConn will take advantage and bomb away from the start.

It won’t be enough to get the win over a team looking to get back on track, but it’ll be enough to make it close.
