College Football Daily Cavalcade: American Athletic Conference Expansion

Sorry if this take sucks, it’s not my fault …

It had a dream to get bigger with a slew of Big 12 takes, but it ended up expanding with thoughts on Conference USA.

Not that it applies to other areas of our world or anything, but sometimes, you take the win and move forward.

The American Athletic Conference expanded with UAB, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, and UTSA. What does it all mean? Here are 10 quick thoughts on the big move.

1. So now with these six, the American Athletic Conference, at least for football, will look like this when it all starts once they’re in – a specific date hasn’t been finalized.

Assume the league goes back to two divisions looking something like this …

East: Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Navy, Temple, UAB, USF

West: Memphis, North Texas, Rice, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, UTSA

2. Beyond everything else, it’s a happy day – at least for everyone other than Conference USA.

It’s a good business move for the American Athletic Conference in a take-the-win sort of way, and for the schools, this is massive.

It’s a step up from C-USA for Rice and North Texas, and it’s a giant validation for the other four schools.

3. Remember, UAB football was in a self-induced coma in 2015 and 2016.

It’s a minor miracle that it still has a program, much less it getting to have a moment like this.

Florida Atlantic football started from scratch under the late Howard Schnellenberger and joined the FCS world back in 2004, UTSA has only been in the FCS since 2012, and Charlotte is still new to football, becoming a major college program in 2015. Now they’re all in the American Athletic Conference.

4. It might have been a necessary business move for the American Athletic Conference, but it’s a gigantic step back to what was potentially on the table a few months ago. No program-shaming here, but UAB, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, and UTSA doesn’t move the national needle even a little bit.

5. There’s no replacing new Big 12 members Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF.

Think of expansion as Moneyball – the American Athletic Conference couldn’t replace Damon and Giambi. It has to hope that the six newly-added schools can add up to overcome some of the revenue hit. It won’t, but it’s a needed move to strengthen the league’s membership. But …

6. Things are a whole lot different than they were a few months ago.

When the Big 12 appeared to be mortally wounded with Texas and Oklahoma leaving for the SEC, there was a real thought that the American Athletic Conference would go get Big 12 schools, not the other way around.

The AAC went from – at least in the sports media sewing circle – possibly pulling in West Virginia and maybe Iowa State and Oklahoma State to losing three of its biggest schools and adding five from Conference USA.

7. Again, not to dog the six programs coming in, but this cements the Mountain West as the sixth best conference in college football – at least until the Pac-12 wakes up.

The AAC landing Florida Atlantic gives USF a natural rival, and the state of Texas becomes more emphasized, but these six aren’t going to entice the big schools from the Mountain West to possibly flip leagues.

The AAC landing Big 12 schools wasn’t realistically going to work, but chatting up San Diego State – with the Pac-12 not claiming to be interested in expanding right now – and Boise State, and some of the others from the Mountain West in an attempt to become a giant national conference wasn’t crazy.

The six schools the AAC just landed don’t up the brand enough for the Mountain West schools to be interested.

8. Don’t assume this is slowing down.

At some point, the Big 12 will realize that going after USF – Tampa, rivalry with UCF, massive enrollment – makes a whole lot of sense, and the AAC hanging on to Memphis is a mild upset.

Conference USA still has a few attractive schools – most notably Marshall and Southern Miss. The American Athletic Conference might keep moving here, and going after FIU – to have three schools in Florida – might make sense.

9. So now what for Conference USA?

It just lost five of its 12 members, and others wanted to go, too – UTEP isn’t all that happy right now. That leaves FIU, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion, Southern Miss, UTEP, and WKU.

Raiding the Sun Belt would be an instant reaction, but the easier move might be to entice a few of the independents to join in. Adding Army, UConn and UMass would at least give the conference some bulk, but the big get – even with a whole slew of issues – would be Liberty. However, the Sun Belt is about to go hard after all the independents, too. And …

10. Get ready for some schools from the FCS world to start becoming factors.

James Madison, North Dakota State, and Sam Houston State are among several schools on the verge of stepping up. There’s nowhere else for the Sun Belt and Conference USA to go, so we might see as many as ten new schools in the FBS world in the near future.

Florida Atlantic vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The passing game should be fine

It sputtered against Air Force, and the offense as a whole struggled in the loss to UAB – N’Kosi Perry threw three picks – but the Charlotte defense that gave up 466 yards through the air to FIU and got rocked by Middle Tennessee is going to get thrown on.

The Owl offense is great at keeping the chains moving. They’ve got the balance to move on the ground to go along with 240 yards or more through the air in every game but one. Overall, the 400+ yards will be there, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Charlotte Will Win

Charlotte should be able to run the ball.

It’s not a consistent team – both losses game when the O failed to hit 300 yards – but when the ground game is working, everything is okay.

Florida Atlantic’s defense got run over by Florida and Air Force, but those are obvious outliers. The pass D is just okay against quarterbacks that can get into a rhythm, and Chris Reynolds can do that – he’s hitting over 70% of his passes over the last three games, and that’s what the Owls have to worry about.

It that happens, the running game is effective enough to control the game, but …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a bit feast-or-famine for the Florida Atlantic offense, but it’s done what it was supposed to against the mediocre defenses on the slate.

Charlotte has been able to survive when it allowed a ton of yards, though – beating Duke, Middle Tennessee, and FIU when allowing over 500 yards.

That’s not going to work out against Florida Atlantic.

Florida Atlantic vs UAB Game Preview

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

Can the Florida Atlantic offense keep this going?

It ripped through FIU for over 700 yards in a blowout win last week, making it the third time in four games the offense hit at least 197 rushing yards and over 300 passing.

N’Kosi Perry has been sharp with ten touchdown passes and just one pick, the running game has a slew of options in a rotation, and they’ll all going to crank it up against a UAB D that got hammered for over 300 passing yards in three of the last four games.

The Owls are dominant on third downs, they’re not turning the ball over, and …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UAB Will Win

UAB isn’t going to be awful in Game Two in the shiny new Protective Stadium.

The Blazers have the experience and talent to roll through the Conference USA schedule, but they couldn’t handle a Liberty offense with a slew of elite playmakers. FAU doesn’t have the Flame attack.

The UAB downfield passing game continues to be dangerous and effective deep, but the O is still great at controlling the clock. It’ll control the tempo in this.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UAB might have lost to Liberty last week, but again, that’s a terrific team. The other loss was go Georgia – there’s no shame there.

Now the Blazers have to make the new home field theirs.

Willie Taggart has made Florida Atlantic a player in the Conference USA race, and it’ll keep the offensive pressure on all game long. The Owls just won’t have the ball long enough, especially in the second half.

Florida Atlantic vs FIU Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

FIU has lost a few tough games, and the defense might be having some problems, but the offense is starting to play well enough to keep up against almost anyone in Conference USA.

The downfield passing game is great – Max Bortenschlager is averaging close to ten yards per throw – and Florida Atlantic doesn’t have the pass rush to be a bother.

Florida Atlantic has been too inconsistent over the first four games offensively – at least on the ground – and the Golden Panthers have had a few decent moments defensively early in the season, but …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The Golden Panthers have been lit up over the last two weeks. Not being able to stop Texas Tech is one thing, but Central Michigan also pushed for 400 yards through the air to go along with over 200 on the ground.

Yeah, the FIU passing game makes things happen down the field, but FAU’s secondary – despite the lack of pressure from the front line – has been great when the ball is in the air.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

FIU isn’t taking advantage of the opportunities in the red zone, and it can’t afford to miss any shots in this.

The real problem is the lack of a consistent running game to take advantage of the struggling Owl defensive front. To be fair, FAU has faced a slew of amazing ground games, but this week it gets a break.

This is always a weird rivalry game that seems to defy expectations, but the Owls should be in control of this after the first quarter.

Florida Atlantic vs Air Force Game Preview

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The offense has an efficient enough passing game to give Air Force problems.

The Falcons didn’t have to worry against Lafayette and Navy, and then Utah State came in and cranked up 448 yards in a 49-45 win.

Florida Atlantic might not have a high-powered passing game, but former Miami Hurricane N’Kosi Perry has been ultra-efficient with seven touchdown passes, no picks and enough key plays to keep things moving.

Great on third downs, the Owls can beat Air Force at its own game by controlling the ball and winning the time of possession battle.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Air Force Will Win

The Falcon running game is doing what it does.

Yeah, Florida Atlantic should be able to throw enough to control the game for stretches, but the defensive front has to deal with the ground game that hit the 370-yard mark in two of the first three games.

Florida ran for 400 against the Owls in the opener.

Air Force can hit a few downfield plays here and there to take advantage of the cheating up D, it doesn’t turn the ball over, and it doesn’t have to worry too much about the pressure from an Owl front that doesn’t get behind the line.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Which team will do what it does well at a higher rate?

Florida Atlantic has just enough of defensive talent to hold serve, and Perry and the passing game are strong enough to keep keep the Falcon secondary on its heels.

Air Force will have a late shot to pull off the win, but it’ll stall just short in a fantastic game.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Florida Atlantic (1-1) vs Fordham (0-2) Game Preview

Why Fordham Will Win

There’s an effective enough of an offense to take advantage of every opportunity.

The Rams don’t miss when they get inside the red zone, they’re solid at coming up with third down conversions, and the line has been solid so far for the ground game and at keeping teams out of the backfield.

There hasn’t been a whole lot of luck overall, but Tim DeMorat is coming off a big 352-yard, three touchdown passing day in the loss to Monmouth, and this week the passing attack should keep pressing an FAU defense that’s not stopping anyone on third downs and doesn’t have any sort of a pass rush.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

To be fair, the stats are misleading.

The sacks haven’t been there because Florida and Georgia Southern ran so much. The offensive side was able to take over last week and should be better and better as the season goes on.

Former Miami QB N’Kosi Perry threw for 332 yards and four scores in last week’s win, the parts are there for the ground game to balance things out, and Fordham doesn’t control the ball and the clock enough to matter.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The games against running teams continue next week for FAU with a date at Air Force, but first the secondary gets to have a little test.

It won’t matter as the Owl offense gets out to a hot start with a big first quarter. There’s no resting as the timing still needs to be worked on as the Owls get some good live reps in for the reserves in an easy win.

Georgia Southern (1-0) vs Florida Atlantic (0-1) Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

The Georgia Southern running game worked just fine.

It might have required WAY too much work to get by Gardner-Webb 30-25, but Georgia Southern did what Georgia Southern does. It ran for 365 yards and two scores, it did a nice job with the pass rush, and it controlled the clock for what seemed like five years.

The Eagles had the ball for well over 35 minutes and was able to keep the Bulldogs down until late. When they had to go on a drive and settle things down, they did.

By the way, Florida Atlantic allowed 400 rushing yards and close to nine yards per carry in the 35-14 loss to Florida.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

Alright, N’Kosi Perry. Time to get that passing game thing going.

Florida isn’t getting enough credit for being a top-ten caliber team – and it might be top five at some point. Getting rocked by that team – and it wasn’t all that bad a performance overall – isn’t anything to hang heads over.

The defense did a decent job against the Gator passing game, Perry threw well – at least late – and …

Okay, so FAU didn’t get on the board until the final moments, but the passing attack will work far better against a Georgia Southern secondary that had a nightmare of a time with the Gardner-Webb passing game in the second half.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Expect a great game.

Florida Atlantic’s defense that couldn’t do much against the Florida offensive line will play a whole lot better, but Georgia Southern will be able to do what the running game does.

It would’ve been nice if the Eagles had starting QB Justin Tomlin back – he’s suspended for the first two games – but the offense will still work okay. It won’t be enough, though, to overcome another shaky day from the secondary as the Owls make up for last year’s 20-3 loss.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Florida (0-0) vs Florida Atlantic (0-0) Game Preview

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The Owls are experienced enough to potentially be more cohesive than the Gators.

Florida is breaking in a slew of new starting parts, but Florida Atlantic has a veteran offensive front paving the way for an attack that gets back almost everyone and adds former Miami QB N’Kosi Perry.

The defensive side is where things get really fun.

13 of the top 14 Florida Atlantic tacklers are back on a D that was the best in Conference USA at getting to the quarterback. The Florida offense obviously is loaded with talent, but this is a tune-up game that likely won’t be the light scrimmage it needs.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Florida Will Win

The offense might need a little while to get up and rolling again, but the defense should be far, far better than the 2020 version.

The linebacking corps is going to be a powerhouse, and it should be able to lock down on a Florida Atlantic offense that has to run well to win. The corners are great, the line is huge, and there’s no way, no how this group isn’t coming out roaring after all of the problems in 2021.

And the O will be just fine, too.

Emory Jones adds something different to the attack with more of a rushing element, and he’s got the backs behind him to rumble. This might not be the high-flying fun show of last year, but it’ll be effective.

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

What’s Going To Happen

Florida will look the part again coming out of the gate.

When we last saw the Gators, they couldn’t do anything right with several key parts of the offense out getting ready for the NFL. Don’t worry about the major changes; Jones is about to be a star.

Florida Atlantic will bring the effort, and it’s not going to be a speed bump, but even with all of the experience returning the team’s about to be outclassed – even if it might be the best in Conference USA.

Give it a quarter, and then the Gators will settle in.

2021 CFN Conference USA Preseason Rankings: East

1. Marshall Thundering Herd

Quick Take: It’s one of the most interesting Group of Five teams coming into the 2021 season – it’s Conference USA title or bust. New head man Charles Huff has to pull the Herd offense out of the nosedive that screwed up 2020, and he’s got the parts in place to do it – especially for the passing game. If the D isn’t the best in the conference, it’s second.
Marshall Preview | Schedule

2. WKU Hilltoppers

Quick Take: The Hilltoppers will be deep in the hunt for the Conference USA title – at the very least, they’ll be among the top three teams. The pass rush will be a killer, but the real fun comes with an upgraded passing game. WKU took the parts from a big-time Houston Baptist air show to revamp the O.
WKU Preview | Schedule

3. Florida Atlantic Owls

Quick Take: Willie Taggart should have his Owls in the mix for the Conference USA title. The lines are among the best in the league, the special teams should be great, and if the quarterback play is fine, everything is there to come up with a big season.
FAU Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532444]

4. FIU Golden Panthers

Quick Take: After an ugly 2020, Butch Davis should have a whole lot more success in 2021. It starts with one of the league’s most talented secondaries, a good kicking game, and a promising ground game that should take more control of games.
FIU Preview | Schedule

5. Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders

Quick Take: The Blue Raiders will be in for a weird season. The team isn’t all that great, but it should push for a bowl game with a whole lot of winnable games built into the slate. The secondary is good thanks to the best group of safeties in the league, but can the offense keep up the pace?
MTSU Preview | Schedule

6. Charlotte 49ers

Quick Take: The 49ers should have a decent passing game, but can the defense hold up? There’s experience, and the coaching is solid, but the schedule doesn’t have a lot of breaks – the 49ers miss most of the easier teams from the West.
Charlotte Preview | Schedule

7. Old Dominion Monarchs

Quick Take: Welcome back, ODU football. After taking last year off, and with head coach Ricky Rahne having to wait a season to get his era going, this is Conference USA’s biggest wild-card team. What’s going to work right away? The offense should get going early on.
