Colts’ 2023 rookie review: QB Anthony Richardson

Reviewing the rookie season for Colts QB Anthony Richardson.

The Indianapolis Colts rookie class from the 2023 season had plenty of ups and downs throughout what was an encouraging campaign from the organization as a whole.

With their first season now behind them, it’s time to take a quick look back at how they performed and where they may be headed in the future. In our rookie review series, we’ll be taking a look at each 2023 draft pick currently still with the team.

We start with quarterback Anthony Richardson, who was selected with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

5 toughest decisions for Colts GM Chris Ballard this offseason

Plenty of tough decisions await Colts GM Chris Ballard this offseason.

What a difference a year has made for Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard.

He went from having to find a new head coach and selecting a franchise quarterback to having to put together a roster that can go on a deep playoff run next season.

Ballard’s key decisions this offseason come mostly on players that were on the roster in 2023.

Here are the five toughest he has to decide on in the coming months:

Bernhard Raimann listed as Colts’ secret superstar

Pro Football Focus labeled Bernhard Raimann as the Colts’ secret superstar.

One of the more encouraging developments regarding the Indianapolis Colts’ season in 2023 was the growth shown by second-year left tackle Bernhard Raimann.

The former third-round pick built off a promising rookie campaign, developing into a cornerstone piece at one of the most vital positions on the entire roster.

Raimann was already named to Pro Football Focus’ All-Breakout Team earlier in the offseason, and they also listed him as the Colts’ secret superstar following the 2023 season.

Raimann showed some promise in his rookie season with the Colts but was held down by a poor offensive line around him – so those rookie growing pains were magnified. However, his ascension in his second season has been excellent. Raimann earned an 82.3 PFF grade — the seventh-highest among all tackles, while his 80.6 pass-blocking grade was eighth-highest.

With Anthony Richardson returning next season, Raimann’s status as one of the up-and-coming left tackles in the NFL will matter even more. He’ll have the task of protecting the Colts’ franchise quarterbacks blindside for the foreseeable future.

The Austria native allowed four sacks throughout the season, all four of which came against elite edge rushers Myles Garrett, Josh Allen and Trey Hendrickson twice. He also was regarded as one of the best run-blocking offensive tackles in the NFL, according to ESPN’s run-block win rate metric.

Though the offensive line, including Raimann, dealt with injuries throughout the 2023 season, he proved he can hold his own and more against some stiff competition on the blindside.

With another season under his belt, the Colts can once again rely on the strength of the left side of the offensive line as a catalyst for an offense that has a lot of potential in the immediate future.

Colts proposed as team that should trade for Eagles star WR

Bleacher Report suggests the Colts trade for A.J. Brown.

The Indianapolis Colts are coming up on a crucial offseason in which they will look to build around a talented, young quarterback. Sometimes, teams can further that process by acquiring a star wide receiver.

Even though it’s highly unlikely a situation like that will unfold for the Colts, the early offseason is the time to work through those proposals. One of the higher-end suggestions comes from Bleacher Report, which proposes the Colts look to trade for Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown.

Hypothetical Trade We’d Love to See: 2024 first-round pick (No. 15 overall) for WR A.J. Brown

More than anything, the Colts have to do everything they can to help Anthony Richardson succeed in his second season. The clock starts ticking for a rookie quarterback to prove they are the franchise guy the minute they are drafted, and his second year will be crucial. That means giving him enough playmakers to really get the offense going.

Over in Philadelphia, the season ended miserably, and there was speculation about A.J. Brown’s feelings toward the team, especially after he scrubbed his social media of all Eagles content.

The Colts have benefitted from giving up a first-round pick for a veteran before. That’s how they got Buckner, and he has helped their defense a lot. The Colts have cap space to make another aggressive move, and Brown, Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs would immediately become one of the most exciting receiver trios in the league.

So many factors would have to lead to this even becoming a remote possibility. First, the Colts must decide what to do with Michael Pittman Jr., who is slated to be a free agent. He deserves a new contract and likely will cost between $22-25 million per season.

Second, the Eagles would have to be willing to trade Brown. Despite some of the attention he brings on the sidelines in between drives, teams aren’t privy to letting talent like that go unless they feel there are no other options.

There’s also Brown’s contract to consider. He still has three years left on his current deal, and it’s incredibly backloaded. Brown has cap hits of $12.4 and $26.6 million over the next two seasons, respectively. In the final year of the contract, his cap hit skyrockets to $41.6 million.

That’s not an easy contract to stomach for a team that is hoping to give Anthony Richardson a big contract around that time—that would mean Richardson is reaching his ceiling.

There’s no denying the Colts could use an elite talent like Brown. He thrived in Shane Steichen’s offense in 2022 and would do so again if this hypothetical trade took place.

But for now, it’s much more likely this scenario stays in the realm of pipe dreams, barring a massive change in the relationship between Brown and the Eagles.

CBS Sports names Michael Pittman Jr. as Colts MVP

CBS Sports dubbed Michael Pittman Jr. the Colts’ MVP in 2023.

The Indianapolis Colts offense relied on several factors throughout the 2023 season but none may have been more important than wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr.

The fourth-year wideout put together a career season recording 109 receptions for 1,152 yards and four touchdowns. His impact was felt throughout every game and it may have been felt the most when he was inactive during the road loss against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 16.

Thus, Pittman was dubbed the team’s MVP for the 2023 season by CBS Sports.

Pittman was the straw that stirred the drink of Indianapolis’ offense. He was a reliable target for both Anthony Richardson and Gardner Minshew after the rookie QB went down for the year. Pittman led the Colts in every meaningful receiving category in what was a career year in receptions and receiving yards for the fourth-year pro.

In our year-end awards article, we went a different direction, selecting defensive tackle DeForest Buckner instead. However, Pittman was certainly on the list of candidates for that award.

The Colts offense relied heavily on Pittman’s presence as a physical boundary wide receiver and one who made an immense impact after the catch.

Though we were robbed of a full season of development between Pittman and rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson, the duo could be a staple of the offense for years to come if the former’s contract situation is resolved this offseason.

Pittman just completed his four-year rookie contract, and he’s slated to be an unrestricted free agent in March. It’s unlikely he will hit the market, especially since the Colts want him back.

Regardless, the Colts offense managed to stay afloat without Richardson for a number of reasons. Pittman’s talent and abilities were some of the biggest reasons among them.

Twitter reacts to Colts QB Gardner Minshew’s Pro Bowl selection

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Gardner Minshew being named a Pro Bowler.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Gardner Minshew was selected to the 2024 Pro Bowl Games, marking the first time in his career he achieved the feat.

Considering the fact that Minshew wasn’t even on the initial list of alternates, this certainly comes as a surprise. Minshew took over the starting role after rookie Anthony Richardson suffered a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery in Week 5.

Over the course of the season, Minshew started 13 games, completing 62.2% of his passes for 3,305 yards, 15 touchdowns, nine interceptions and an 84.6 passer rating.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to the news that Minshew was named a Pro Bowler:

Colts report card: Grading each position from 2023

Grading each position for the Colts in 2023.

The Indianapolis Colts are gearing up for a pivotal offseason in 2024 as they look to build on some impressive success in the first year under head coach Shane Steichen.

Though the 2023 season didn’t go as planned in terms of making the playoffs, there were still some developments that should bring optimism moving forward for the franchise.

Now, we’re going to grade each position for the Colts after the 2023 campaign as they prepare for a decisive offseason:

Anthony Richardson labeled as Colts’ breakout candidate for 2024

Anthony Richardson is one of the biggest breakout candidates for 2024.

Every offseason lists of breakout candidates are put together for each team, and the Indianapolis Colts have one of the more intriguing names to watch for 2024 in the form of quarterback Anthony Richardson.

After his rookie season was cut short due to a Grade 3 AC joint sprain that required season-ending surgery in October, there is plenty of excitement to see the 2023 No. 4 overall pick return to the field.

Pro Football Focus listed him as the Colts’ early breakout candidate for the 2024 campaign.

Richardson dealt with a lot of injuries in just four appearances this season before being shut down for the remainder of his rookie year before Week 5. However, during those four appearances, Richardson threw for three touchdowns, rushed for four more and threw just one interception in his limited playing time. He displayed a lot of the true dual-threat ability that he was drafted for and if he can avoid injuries, he should be able to deliver on a much larger scale in Year 2.

Richardson is expected to begin throwing sometime soon as he prepares to make his return for the spring practices. It isn’t clear how long his throwing program will take so his status for OTAs and minicamp is still up in the air.

Despite his inexperience entering the NFL, Richardson showed immense poise during his brief stint as the starter. He never looked overwhelmed and even flashed the ability to take over games with big plays when needed.

There are still a number of area Richardson must continue developing, but the future is bright for the young quarterback, and it’s not at all unreasonable to believe he’s the top breakout candidate in the entire NFL entering 2024.

Colts’ Shane Steichen snubbed for Coach of the Year nomination

Shane Steichen was not nominated for Coach of the Year.

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen won’t have the chance to take home some hardware despite the impressive campaign he led in 2023.

With the announcement of the finalists for the year-end awards, Steichen was not among the candidates for the Coach of the Year award. This was despite losing his starting quarterback and nearly making the playoffs right up until the end of the regular season.

Instead, here are the finalists for the Coach of the Year award:

  • Dan Campbell, Detroit Lions
  • John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens
  • DeMeco Ryans, Houston Texans
  • Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco 49ers
  • Kevin Stefanski, Cleveland Browns

No one should argue this isn’t a list of some of the best coaches in the NFL. What Dan Campbell has done in Detroit is inspirational. Meanwhile, DeMeco Ryans completely changed the perception of the Houston Texans, and Kevin Stefanski led his team to the playoffs with Joe Flacco at quarterback.

Steichen was never going to win the award after losing the Week 18 game against the Texans. But that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be nominated.

Kyle Shanahan and John Harbaugh proved to be the best coaches in their respective conferences. But the expectations were much higher for them. Both the 49ers and the Ravens were expected to be good teams.

Most analysts (including us), thought it would be a long shot for the Colts to even be in the running for a playoff spot before the season started. But Steichen changed the entire culture of the organization in just one offseason.

He turned a team that was the laughingstock of the league in 2022 into a squad that competed—even defeated—some of the best teams in the NFL in 2023.

That list of five coaches is incredibly tough to beat, and each has a strong argument for winning the award.

Don’t be surprised to Steichen’s name on this list next year if the Colts continue moving in the direction they’re headed.
