Colorado (2-0) vs San Diego State (3-2) Game Preview

Why San Diego State Will Win

The Aztecs have had a wee bit more time to pivot – for whatever that’s going to be worth.

They were supposed to play Fresno State, but that was off earlier in the week, while USC and Colorado got whacked just a few hours before this game was put together.

The Aztecs ran well in the three wins and didn’t in the two losses. The defeat to San Jose State was a bit weird – too many key mistakes – with the ground game only coming up with 101 yards. It only amassed 109 against Nevada, and rolled for 287 or more in the other three games.

Colorado’s run defense has been fine so far, but it had problems with UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The line doesn’t get to the quarterback and this is a bend-and-break D that doesn’t hold on late in drives. But …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Colorado Will Win

San Diego State might have lost the two games it couldn’t/didn’t run, but the bigger problem was a pass defense that allowed over 200 yards in each of the last two games.

The Aztecs want and need to run well, control the clock, and let the defense take over, especially against the run. Colorado’s offense has been balanced in the first two games, it’s been great on third downs, and there aren’t any big mistakes with just one turnover.

This has been a surprisingly clutch Buff team right out of the gate in the Karl Dorrell era. It proved it could hold on in tight games against good teams. San Diego State hasn’t.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Even with the crazy-quick change and need to gameplan for a totally different style than USC, Colorado will hang on in yet another entertaining, tight game.

San Diego State’s lines will hold up fine, and the defensive front is the toughest Colorado has faced – especially against the run. But the Buff defense will hold up just fine and get off the field easier.

Why Colorado Will Win

Who’s Stanford’s quarterback going to be?

Davis Mills is the star of the Cardinal attack, but he was announced out just before the 35-14 loss to Oregon and now he’s doubtful to play against the Buffs. Jack West wasn’t awful against the Ducks, and the running game worked, but for all the yards, there wasn’t enough scoring.

The run defense couldn’t hold up. Oregon QB Slyer Shough ran for 85 yards and a touchdown – the Cardinal allowed close to seven yards per carry – and now Colorado gets to have its turn.

Sam Noyer isn’t Shough, but he’s coming off a huge day against UCLA – running for 64 yards and a score – and Jarek Broussard rolled for 187 yards and three touchdowns.

Stanford didn’t get into the backfield last week, and it’s going to have a hard time dealing with the Buff O that was almost perfectly balanced. However …

Week 11 Schedule, Predictions, Lines

Why Stanford Will Win

The Colorado defense didn’t do a thing.

UCLA might have stumbled a bit early, but when it got rolling, the Buffs – who didn’t generate a lick of pressure – had to hang on for dear life. The Bruins averaged over 15 yards per catch and seven yards per carry, and now Stanford gets to have some fun.

The game got away from Stanford, but Austin Jones had a strong 100-yard, two-touchdown day and will get the ball even more. It took the Buffs to be +4 in turnover margin and they still struggled to put the game away.

CFN College Football Experts Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford will come up with a solid, workmanlike performance for the win.

It needs to stop getting flagged so much, and it needs to be able to move the chains better than it did against the Ducks, but neither part will be a problem against a Buff team that will throw haymakers, but won’t hit on enough of them.

Stanford isn’t UCLA.

UCLA (0-0) vs Colorado (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why UCLA Will Win

Is the UCLA defense any better?

Ten of the top 13 tacklers are back and the line should finally be a positive. The tackle rotation is good enough to hold down a Buff running game that hasn’t been all that great for a few years.

The offensive side for the Bruins should finally work. QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson is now a seasoned veteran, but the receiving corps is loaded with experience and – FINALLY – the line might not be a total disaster.

Why Colorado Will Win

No, really, is the UCLA defense any better?

It was 113th in the nation in total D last year and now it loses a few of its key parts. It’s more experienced overall, but  the linebacking corps is undergoing an overhaul and the secondary still has to prove it can stop someone after getting hit for over 300 yards per game last year.

The Colorado offensive line should be a positive right away for new head coach Karl Dorrell, and even though Laviska Shenault is in the NFL, the receiving corps is a plus for new starting quarterback Sam Noyer.

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA looked like it turned a corner with three straight wins, and then it all went down the tubes after the early November win over Colorado last year. The program lost the last two trips to Boulder, but it has the experience and pieces in place that Colorado doesn’t.

It’s Dorrell vs. his old UCLA team – his coaching era really wasn’t that bad, by the way – but the Bruins should be just a bit sharper and show off a little bit more consistency. It should be a good battle deep into the fourth quarter, but this will be where having the veteran quarterback matters.

Pac 12 Cancels Fall College Football Season, Might Play In Spring

Following the Big Ten, the Pac-12 will cancel its fall season and attempt to play this spring.

Following the Big Ten, the Pac-12 will cancel its fall season and attempt to play this spring.

First it was the Big Ten on Tuesday, and now it’s the Pac-12.

[jwplayer CKtYFVZx]

This was hardly a shock. The Pac-12 was seemingly on the fence since the start of the coronavirus outbreak, the logistics are tough considering the local issues and rules in Los Angeles, and with several hot spots in Arizona.

The California State University system went online early, USC is planning to go remote for the fall semester, and the entire conference had everyone prepared for this.

Even if the Big Ten had decided that it was going to play, the Pac-12 was still likely to tap out.

It’s still not fun, though.

Like the Big Ten, the Pac-12 will be looking to ramp things up for spring football. That’s for later – the conference couldn’t even figure out how to play in the fall – but for now, the problems seemed to be around the health concerns everyone has, the travel issues, the lack of strong testing, and more than anything else, the uncertainty about playing a contact sport. That was all in the recommendation to and from the Pac-12 to drop the 2020 fall season.

Spring football is a likely logistical nightmare, and it’s a bad look to cancel a fall season because of player health concerns  and then play two seasons in ten months. However, here’s the one big difference between the Pac-12 giving it a go and the Big Ten trying it – the weather.

Boulder and Pullman could be interesting at times in mid-February, but Los Angeles, Tucson and Palo Alto are a little nicer in the spring than Minneapolis, East Lansing and Madison.

Oh yeah, and then there’s the players’ movement. No, the Pac-12 wasn’t going to shut down because of the demands from the players, but for the conference it’s an added bonus to push that down for now.

And now it’s ALL about the Big 12. The Pac-12 cancelling its season was hardly a stunner, and the Big Ten was always 50/50. Lose the Big 12, and there’s no way the ACC or SEC will push through.

5. Pac 12 2020 Preview

Quick Note: Like everyone, we’re still waiting to see what’s going to happen in this unprecedented time of college football turmoil. We’re not completely delusional, but let’s have a little fun with what might happen if the season is safely played … somehow.

Anything interesting happening in the Pac-12 lately?

The league was among the first to push for the idea of a conference-only schedule, the players were at the forefront of a movement to change the dynamic of college sports as we know it, and real life dropped in like a hammer through the Pac-12 region.

And the college football season should be something to watch, too.

With the obvious caveat that all that matters is keeping everyone safe and healthy on all fronts, let’s say the Pac-12 does pull this off.

Let’s say the players have enough of their needs met to get on the field, and let’s hope the powers-that-be earnestly make certain that the safety concerns are addressed to have a season as it was set up by the schedule.

Football-wise, this is going to be awesome.

[jwplayer zttcjcuk]

It would’ve been a whole lot of fun to have seen Ohio State come to Oregon and Michigan play at Washington – and it stinks that Notre Dame and USC aren’t playing – but where’s the sure-thing weak link game for anyone in the ten-game conference-only slate?

Arizona and Colorado might have their issues, but they each have enough to pull off a win over any one of the top teams on their respective schedules.

The same goes for UCLA, Oregon State and Washington State. They’re all going to have their struggles in some way, but it wouldn’t be the slightest bit shocking if they all beat USC, Oregon and Washington, respectively, in the rivalry showdowns.

Stanford is healthy again – it’s going to be good.

Cal has more of an offense to go along with that defense – it’s going to be good.

Arizona State has a killer defense, Utah should have a better one, Washington  should have a stronger one than those two, and USC and Oregon are each coming into the season with legitimate College Football Playoff dreams.

In the end, the league might just be too good from 1-to-12 for anyone to go 10-1 with a Pac-12 Championship for that spot in the CFP.

But let’s not get greedy here.

If the Pac-12 is playing college football this season, that means a whole lot of things ended up going right. If the Pac-12 is playing college football this season, it’s going to be a wildly entertaining show.
