Latest USA TODAY Sports coaches poll has Houston at No. 1 again

A familiar name rises to No. 1 in this week’s coaches poll.

We are shuffling the top of the coaches’ poll this week with the Alabama Crimson Tide’s misstep against the Tennessee Vols on Wednesday. They followed the loss up with a throttling of the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday. However, it wasn’t enough to keep hold of the top spot.

The new No. 1 team, the Houston Cougars, just keep plugging along as they are winners of seven straight.

The Big 12 were among the biggest losers in the poll this week. The TCU Horned Frogs fell out of the poll completely while the Texas Longhorns and Iowa State Cyclones dropped three spots. Texas suffered a loss to a resurging Texas Tech team in Lubbock, the Cyclones are 2-2 over their last four games after falling to Kansas State.

The Kansas Jayhawks, Providence Friars, and Saint Mary’s are big winners as each team jumped up three spots in the poll. The former is now in a prime position to win another Big 12 title with a share of No. 1 in the standings.

DePaul at Xavier Game Preview

Why DePaul Will Win

It’s been a rough run lately, but the team can shoot from the outside.

The overall consistency isn’t there with the offense, and the defense has been a big problem, but they’re going to start firing from the outside early on and have to get hot …

Like they did against Xavier for first time in a 73-72 win.

The Blue Demons are 6-2 when making 45% or more of their threes, and that happened in Chicago back in mid-January. The Musketeers might be able to score in bunches, but they don’t exactly get after it on threes, allowing teams to hit 36% from the outside.

But …

CFN College Basketball Rankings 1-68

Why Xavier Will Win

DePaul can’t score when it’s not able to connect from the outside.

That win over Xavier was the only victory since January 10th because the scoring has been so inconsistent.

There’s no rebounding, the defense doesn’t generate enough stops, and there aren’t enough big plays on the move to get something going when the outside shots aren’t dropping.

Xavier is too good from the field, too amazing from three, and it’s going to win on the boards to make up for the problems on defense. That, and it’s not going to take the Blue Demons lightly after that first meeting.

NCAA Tournament Bracket Projections

What’s Going To Happen

Xavier is 13-1 at home – the lone loss came to Indiana back in mid-November – and DePaul hasn’t won a game outside of Chicago since November 14th.

The Musketeers will go on a big run late in the first half and will coast from there.

Baylor at Kansas Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor has been terrific over the last month. It lost at Texas in a decent battle a few weeks ago, but that’s the only blip in a 10-1 run including a strong 75-69 win over Kansas.

How do you beat Kansas? You move the ball around. The team is 5-3 when teams come up with 13 or more assists – and 0-2 when allowing 18 or more – and 13-0 when teams come up with ten or fewer.

What’s going right lately for the Bears? They’re making everything thanks to a whole slew of assists.

This was a decent passing team throughout the year, but it’s been brilliant over the last four games with 67 assists leading to a whole lot of easy points. It has 12 or more in three of those four games, but …

CFN College Basketball Rankings 1-68

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas has been amazing at home.

It had a blip when it didn’t show up in a blowout loss to Kansas State, but overall it’s 12-1 in Allen partly because the turnovers aren’t quite there at home.

Overall the team has kept the mistakes to a relative minimum, as always the rebounding has been great, and compared to the rest of the Big 12 – not the best of outside shooting conferences other than what Baylor does – it shoots threes like Steph Curry.

Baylor will have issues on the defensive boards, the defense overall is just okay, and …

NCAA Tournament Bracket Projections

What’s Going To Happen

This should be fantastic.

It’s one of those games that might end up making all the difference between being in the mix for a 1 seed or possibly down to a 3, the energy will be terrific, and the winner should be in the top four in the rankings come Monday.

Baylor will go on its share of runs, but Kansas will be just a wee bit better on the boards with the defensive intensity coming through late. Baylor will keep this alive in the last few minutes with free throws, but it won’t be enough.

Kansas is 17-1 when scoring at least 70 points, so …

Oklahoma at Texas Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

It’s there, it just has to kick in.

When the offense gets on the move and it’s hitting from the outside, it can pull this off. It shot well in the first meeting with Texas and had its chances in the 70-69 loss, but to pull this off it has to be brilliant throughout.

It took down Alabama by hitting 58% from the field and rolled through Kansas State by making 11 threes and making just about everything else.

Granted, it’s asking a lot against this Texas defense, but the easy shots have to come with the extra pass, and the shooters have to be on from jump. Oklahoma is 9-1 when making 50% of its shots, and …

CFN College Basketball Rankings 1-68

Why Texas Will Win

Oklahoma is 4-12 when it doesn’t come hit half of its attempts.

Again, it’s there – the Sooners have shown the ability to do it, but 1) they haven’t hit the 50% mark in any true road game and 2) Texas has allowed just three teams to make half of their shots. One of them was Kansas State, and another was Tennessee.

It’s been a bit of a fight lately with two losses in the last three games, but …

NCAA Tournament Bracket Projections

What’s Going To Happen

Texas has lost three of its last four games on the road, and it’s 14-1 at home with the defeat coming in a wild 116-103 firefight against Kansas State.

The Texas offense is too consistent, the team is too good on the free throw line, and it’s not going to have any turnover issues against an Oklahoma defense that doesn’t force mistakes.
