The Browns rookie class still has no official stats after 4 weeks

The Cleveland Browns rookie class still has no official stats after 4 weeks

After the first four weeks of the NFL season, most teams are starting to get a pretty good feel for how much their rookie draft class is capable of doing for the rest of the year. The draftees likely have their feet wet and are settling into being professional players.

The Cleveland Browns, alas, are not most NFL teams.

Cleveland has yet to see its entire rookie class register a single statistic through the first four games. Only two of the Browns 2024 NFL Draft class have even played in the regular season so far.

Third-round offensive lineman Zak Zinter has seen the most action. The No. 85 overall pick has started two games — and done so at different positions for the injury-ravaged Cleveland line. Zinter played left tackle in Week 2 and moved to his more natural right guard spot for the start in Week 4. He’s played 109 snaps in the first four games.

Nathaniel Watson, a sixth-round linebacker from Mississippi State, is the only other rookie who has seen the field. Watson has played 33 total reps, all on special teams. He’s yet to record a tackle.

The Browns didn’t have a first-round pick, dealt away as part of the Deshaun Watson trade. That trade also included Cleveland’s fourth-rounder in 2024 (among others). Their top pick, second-round DT Michael Hall from Ohio State, has been sidelined on the exempt list for a domestic assault situation over the offseason.

Cleveland’s other picks include WR Jamari Thrash (5th round) and seventh-round defenders Jowon Briggs and Myles Harden.

Browns rookie DL expects to be arrested after a disturbing domestic dispute

Browns rookie DL Michael Hall expects to be arrested after a disturbing domestic dispute from Monday night

Cleveland Browns rookie defensive lineman Michael Hall is expected to be arrested after a domestic dispute in his suburban Cleveland home on Monday night, according to Zac Jackson of The Athletic.

Hall is a Cleveland-area native and was a very popular selection as the team’s second-round pick, No. 54 overall by the Browns. He was expected to earn considerable playing time on Cleveland’s strong defense. Hall played collegiately at Ohio State.

Ben Axelrod of Awful Announcing posted some of the police report from the incident, which took place on Monday in Avon, Ohio. Note that some of the language quoted in the report is NSFW.

Jackson updated his own initial report to include this,

“Incident report alleges that Browns DT Mike Hall Jr. pressed a gun against his fiancé’s temple, drug her across a porch and down the driveway.”

As of press time, the Browns have not released any info or statement on Hall.

Browns rookie Dawand Jones proving to be the steal of the 2023 NFL Draft

Dawand Jones is proving that he clearly should not have fallen all the way into the fourth round

It’s not everyday you see a rookie offensive lineman come in out of the fourth round of a draft and completely dominate. Yet, that is exactly what the rookie for the Cleveland Browns, Dawand Jones, has been able to do.

We have seen multiple elite performances out of Jones, locking down some of the best pass rushers in the entire league such as Nick Bosa and T.J. Watt. In his first 11 games of his career, Jones has given up just three quarterback hits and three sacks on the season for a variety of different signal callers. He is also part of one of the most stable running attacks in the league, one which he is a clear anchor for on the right side of that Cleveland attack.

It’s hard to be successful in the league as a rookie, especially one drafted in the later rounds. It’s even tougher when you are thrown the adversity of blocking for multiple different quarterbacks and losing your top running back. Dawand Jones is proving that he clearly should not have fallen all the way into the fourth round, and is solidifying himself not only as the best rookie offensive lineman from this class, but one of the best tackles in the league.

Browns rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson thrown into the fire again

Thompson-Robinson made his 1st start in Week 4 against the Ravens and lost 28-3

Browns rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson is Cleveland’s new starter. The fifth-rounder from UCLA has taken over for the injured Deshaun Watson. He will be under center when the Browns host the rival Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 11.

Thompson-Robinson and the Browns are hoping that his second career start goes better than his first. That came back in Week 4, when Thompson-Robinson had an emergency start due to Watson missing for a different injury. His first action did not go well.

The Ravens dogged Thompson-Robinson into three interceptions in a 28-3 Baltimore win in FirstEnergy Stadium. “DTR” was sacked three times and under constant pressure. It does not figure to be much easier against Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt and the Steelers defensive front.

The Cleveland Browns might have a Dorian Thompson-Robinson problem

Cleveland Browns rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson could start hearing fan calls to start if Deshaun Watson struggles again

It’s not exactly a secret that current Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Deshaun Watson had a mixed reception among his own fans given his dubious off-the-field activities. This was made none the better by his frankly abysmal outing in his first year as a starter for the Browns. The excuses about how he was away from football for over a year can work temporarily, but if this stretch of play continues, there is little to stop new fan-favorite quarterback and freshly minted backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson from receiving chants from fans and media alike to be slid in for starting snaps.

While it may come off as a bit of an overreaction to a stellar preseason performance, Thompson-Robinson really did look like the real deal. Combine that with his gritty story of having to grind through multiple college teams, and his most recent blindside block and Cleveland could certainly hear calls for the rookie should the season not kick off as expected.

Thompson-Robinson boasted a 105.5 average quarterback rating, 64% completion percentage, over 400 yards passing, and a pair of touchdowns in his first set of preseason games. Looking prepared, snappy, and with a live arm, Thompson-Robinson could be a diamond in the rough for a Cleveland team that wasn’t even necessarily digging to find it.

Why Baltimore Ravens Will Win

Cleveland has to run to win, but it’s about to hit a brick wall.

It was able to come up with 113 yards on the ground in the first meeting – a 23-20 loss back in Week 7 – but it has to do a whole to more.

The team is 0-5 when coming up with fewer than 171 rushing yards and 5-3 when getting that many or more. The No. 2 run defense in the NFL hasn’t allowed more than 145 in any game and only gave up more than 100 four times.

This is going to be a low scoring battle – it’s almost certainly not going to hit 43 points like the first meeting – and that fits the Ravens just fine. Their last three games have been decided by a total of four points – they won two of them and lost in the final moments against Jacksonville.

This is a battle-tested team that’s pushed through a slew of issues to be 6-1 in the last seven, but …

NFL Expert Picks Week 15

Why Cleveland Browns Will Win

The Raven offense is struggling without Lamar Jackson.

With Jackson still out with a knee injury, it’s been a grind. Tyler Huntley will go after suffering a concussion, but the offense has to start doing more after failing to get to 17 points in three of the last four games.

The Cleveland offense hasn’t exactly been rolling since Deshaun Watson took over – just one touchdown in two weeks for the O – but the passing game started to click a wee bit in the loss to Cincinnati.

In the first meeting, the Brown defense was able to hold up in the first game, but turnovers proved costly.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be cold, both offenses are going to struggle a bit, and it’s going to come down to mistakes.

Deshaun Watson will have one of his best performances yet – it’s his first home game for the Browns – the pass rush will rise up, and Baltimore will be taken a bit out of its offensive comfort zone.

It’ll be close, both kickers will play a big role, and when it absolutely needs to work, the Brown running game will come through.

Why Cleveland Browns Will Win

That didn’t exactly go according to plan.

The Browns were able to beat Houston 27-14, but Deshaun Watson played like he hadn’t seen the field in a few years, the passing game was spotty, and …

The defense came up large with four takeaways.

It’s not a D that forces a ton of mistakes, but the only other time it came up with multiple turnovers was in the 32-13 win over Cincinnati back in Week 8.

As long as Nick Chubb and the running game take the pressure off, Watson should start to ease back into the offense against a Bengal pass defense that’s fine, but allowed 200 yards or more in four of the last five games.

Week 14 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Cincinnati Bengals Will Win

The loss to the Browns was the only big over the last seven games.

The Cincinnati offense has found its groove with a great balance – Samaje Perine has brought the power with Joe Mixon in the concussion protocol – and now all of the skill parts are back for Joe Burrow to work with.

All of the running is fine, but when Burrow is on, the Bengals win. They’re 8-1 when he throws for 200 yards or more, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The run defense is Cleveland’s biggest problem. It’s 0-5 when allowing 160 yards or more. Cincinnati might not do that, but there will be enough offensive balance to go along with the explosion.

It’ll be a fun back and forth fight – the Bengals won’t be held to under 20 points again.
