2021 CFN All-ACC Team | 2021 ACC Top 30 Players

2021 Preseason CFN ACC Offensive Player of the Year

QB DJ Uiagalelei, Soph. Clemson

North Carolina QB Sam Howell could very easily be here, and the hope is for Clemson WR Justyn Ross and Miami QB D’Eriq King to be healthy enough to be in the mix for the ACC Offensive Player of the Year honor, but …

Uiagalelei is a special talent.

It’s putting too much pressure on the guy to step in right away and be what Trevor Lawrence has been for the Tigers over the last three years, but … he’s good enough to step in right away and be what Trevor Lawrence has been for the Tigers over the last three years.

The 6-4, 250-pound former super-recruit came through when Lawrence was out in the middle of the season, throwing for 342 yards against Boston College and 439 against Notre Dame – and now he should do that on a regular basis. He’s got the size, the arm, the mobility, and the team around him to be the big man on the ACC campus.

2021 Preseason CFN ACC Defensive Player of the Year

DT Bryan Bresee, Soph. Clemson

The next great Clemson defensive tackle was expected to be good right away after coming to campus as the 2020 No. 1 recruit in the nation, and he didn’t disappoint as one of the ACC’s best interior linemen.

The 6-5, 300-pounder was a bit banged up at times, but he was still steady throughout the year as a tough presence and quick enough to come up with 33 tackles with four sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss – and he’s just scratching the surface.

Too quick, too athletic, and with the NFL size – and the ability to get a bit bigger and stronger – he finished last year with a strong game against Ohio State and now should be an even more dominant force.

Clemson Tigers College Football Preview 2021: Offense

So how do you keep on going after losing a generational quarterback talent and the ACC’s all-time leading rusher? If you’re Clemson, you just find the next Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne.

It was able to find another quarterback worthy of the massive resumés of Deshaun Watson and Tajh Boyd – and give Kelly Bryant his due for getting Clemson to the CFP. It also had to find another running back at the same level as Wayne Gallman and Andre Ellington, and it more than did that.

Yeah, Lawrence and Etienne really were special. But Clemson can be even better.

It’s hard to argue with having the nation’s tenth-best offense that averaged over 500 yards per game and was third in scoring with close to 44 points per outing, but the ground game wasn’t all that great and there were a few too many turnovers – but that’s nitpicking.

You don’t have a better team without Lawrence and Etienne, but …

DJ Uiagalelei is the truth. He wasn’t quite the same level of recruit as Lawrence, but he wasn’t all that far off. He stepped in when Lawrence was out with COVID issues and pushed Notre Dame for 429 yards and two scores and mounted a comeback to get by Boston College. All the tools are there to be the 2023 No. 1 overall draft pick.

The backup situation, though, is massive concern after Taisun Phommachanh – a strong 6-3, 220-pound recruit from a few years ago – suffered a torn Achilles heel this spring. If the season is down to walk-on Hunter Hemes, there’s a problem.

The receiving corps will be fine no matter what, but it’ll obviously be a whole lot better if Justyn Ross is okay and ready to play.

A top ten overall draft pick-caliber receiver, he’s a 6-4, 205-pound deep threat who missed all of last year with a career-threatening spinal issue. He’s still looking to get back and into the mix, but it’s still going to be a while as he keeps on progressing along.

Amari Rodgers and Cornell Powell are gone – along with the receiving skills of Etienne – making TE Braden Galloway the leading returning receiver. He’s an NFL talent who’ll make plenty of all-star teams, but a slew of young parts have to shine.

The trio of 6-3 targets EJ Williams, Frank Ladson and Joseph Ngata are very big and very talented. It’s a young, deep group – watch out for freshman Beaux Collins – that now gets its chance in the spotlight.

– A few sure-thing returning All-ACC stars are on the offensive line, but the group has to be stronger for the ground game while continuing to be fantastic in pass protection.

Matt Bockhorst might be the ACC’s best guard if it’s not Will Putnam on the right side, and undersized all-star Jordan McFadden should be just fine at left tackle in place of Jackson Carman.

There isn’t another Etienne, but Lyn-J Dixon has patiently waited his turn to do a lot more. 215-pound sophomore Kobe Pace and new recruits Will Shipley and Phil Mafah will all be a part of a rotation.

Why Rutgers Will Win

1991. That was the last time Rutgers was in the NCAA Tournament.

1983. That was the last time Rutgers won a game in the NCAA Tournament.

It wasn’t always a smooth ride to get here this year thanks to an ugly 1-6 midseason run, but the Scarlet Knights beat Illinois, Michigan State, and did a solid job of cleaning up against the mediocre teams in the Big Ten.

There’s a lot missing from this team, but the defense is good at getting aggressive and forcing mistakes, there’s a lot of size and a ton of blocks, and the team has a way of keeping games low scoring and close.

It also helps that Clemson doesn’t score.

The Tigers finished last in the ACC isn scoring, it struggles to get to 70 points, and the O doesn’t manufacture ways to get to the free throw line. However …

2021 NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions

Why Clemson Will Win

Clemson has the style to give Rutgers problems.

The Scarlet Knight like to keep games from getting wild, and Clemson is more than happy to play along.

Its defense is great at slowing down teams inside and out, there aren’t a whole lot of problems with mistakes and turnovers, and there’s just enough happening from three to get by – and things are getting better.

It’s an okay-not-great shooting team overall, but it’s starting to hit from the outside a whole lot more, coming up with double-digit made threes over the last four games after not doing all that much for most of the regular season. Being hot from three doesn’t necessarily guarantee a win, but Rutgers doesn’t have the pop – especially from  the outside – to keep up if the Tigers are hitting.

College Basketball Experts Picks For Clemson vs Rutgers

What’s Going To Happen

Assume this will be a relatively low scoring, tight game with a few mini mood and scoring swings.

Can Clemson get to the line late?

The Tigers make free throws as well as anyone, but they just don’t get to the line enough. Rutgers gets hit with a whole lot of fouls, and Clemson doesn’t. In the final few minutes, the Tigers will make their key free throws, and the Scarlet Knights won’t.

Miami (9-16) vs Clemson (18-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Miami Will Win

Miami was able to pull off a good 79-73 win over Pitt in the first round to keep the season alive. It happened with balanced scoring – all five starters came up with double-digit points – helped by getting to the free throw line over and over and over again.

The Canes shot 28 free throws – hitting 22 – and Pitt only made five of its 14 tries. That’s by design.

Miami leads the nation with the fewest fouls, but it doesn’t normally hit its free throws at a 79% clip. On the flip side, Clemson can hit its free throws, but it doesn’t get to the line.

Why Clemson Will Win

Miami might have been great on the line against Pitt, but it was awful from three, making just five of its 20 chances.

Clemson’s defense has the ability to clamp down hard on the outside, the D is among the best in the country at keeping the score low, and it managed to hold down the Canes in Tiger wins in the regular season.

Clemson was good from the field and great from three in both games, and it survived even though Miami wasn’t bad from the field. However …

What’s Going To Happen

This isn’t the type of Clemson team that’s going to run away and hide with a game – it just doesn’t score enough. However, it’s great when it has to come up with a key stop and should be able to hold down a generally punchless Hurricane offense.

Atlantic: Boston College | Clemson | Florida St

And now we’re back to normal … we hope. There’s a real ACC schedule with all of the big games we’re used to (yay!) and there’s no Notre Dame as an official member this time around (boo!).

Here are five things about the schedule that matter including who misses the big teams from the other division, the non-conference analysis, the one big difference in this year’s slate, the winners and losers, and starting out with …

5.  Who gets the rested teams?

Give (almost) every ACC team credit for at least having one nasty non-conference game on the schedule. Okay, that might be a bit much.

Give (almost) every ACC team credit for at least having one Power Five game of note on the slate to go along with the regular conference schedule. More on that in Part 3 of this, but that one key non-ACC battle gives every team at least a little bit of cover for one paycheck sure-win game against Cupcake A&M.

That game against an FCS team matters, and so does the midseason off-week. The time of those dates matter as much as the games/week off themselves.

Games vs. The Coastal: Georgia Tech, at Pitt

Missed Teams From The Coastal: Duke, Miami, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech

Clemson Tigers Football Schedule Analysis: It’s Clemson, so everyone on the schedule is freaked out about having to play the national championship-level team, but dealing with Georgia to open the season matters. That’s a talent-even game that’s a far bigger showdown for the SEC side – Clemson can lose this, run the table and be fine and Georgia has a much tougher road the rest fo the way.

There’s no North Carolina on the Tiger slate, going to NC State and South Carolina will garner some interest, and five of the last nine games are on the road, but … whatever. Clemson will be a double-digit favorite against everyone but the Dawgs.

Clemson Tigers Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: 12-0. There’s that Georgia game, and a whole lot of four-foot putts. They’re not all going to be easy – there’s always at least one weird close call game against a vastly inferior team – but it’ll take something amazing for anyone on this slate other than UGA to pull off a win,

Clemson Tigers Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: 9-3. Realistically, the worst case scenario is 10-2 with a loss to Georgia and one major slip-up along the way, but that’s a bit too aggressive. Maybe if injuries strike, or if Pitt has a big day from its pass rush at home, or thing could get dicey if Florida State or South Carolina rock in the right moment, but there’s no Notre Dame or North Carolina or Virginia Tech.

Louisville (10-3) vs Clemson (9-4) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Louisville Will Win

Clemson is struggling.

It was on a nice run to start the season with a good defense and a style that kept everything close, but a three-game-losing streak changed all of that with the defense going bye-bye and the offense not keeping up.

That’s just fine for a Louisville team that’s fine as long as it gets to 70 points, but won’t push too much past that. This isn’t a three-point shooting team, but it’s okay enough from the field to get by.

Own the boards, don’t start giving the ball away against the Tiger pressure, and out-Clemson, Clemson – come through late in a low-scoring game.

However …

Why Clemson Will Win

That’s what Clemson needs. It has to keep this from getting into any sort of a shootout, and that’s okay – Louisville only hit the 80-point mark once and that was against Prairie View.

Clemson’s defense didn’t allow over 70 points in any of its first ten games, and then Virginia came up with a stunner, and everything crashed over the following two games allowing three straight games with 80 points or more.

How? Virginia, Georgia Tech, and Florida State got hot from three. Now …

What’s Going To Happen

Expect Clemson to fix the glitch.

It’s been a rough few games since the long layoff, but the three point defense will return against a Louisville offense that’s not all that sharp from the outside. It’ll be a fun game. Low scoring, but fun.

What are the top college football programs of all-time going by the USA Today Coaches Poll and UPI rankings? Here are the top ACC programs according to a CFN formula using all the USA Today Coaches and UPI final polls.

Coaches Poll College Football Rankings
All-Time Coaches Poll Rankings | AP All-Time Rankings
ACC | Big Ten | Big 12 | M-West | Pac-12 | SEC
1950s | 1960s  | 1970s | 1980s | 1990s | 2000s | 2010s

Which current ACC college football programs are the greatest of all-time according to the UPI and USA Today Coaches final polls?

Using a ranking system taking all the AP final college football polls and assigning 25 points to the national champion, 24 for the final No. 2 team, 23 for the No. 3 team on down, it’s Florida State without much of a problem with Miami coasting easily into second.

One note on this – this is made up of current ACC programs and factoring in their histories. Obviously many of these programs weren’t in the ACC starting in 1950.

Note, again, this is based on the CFN formula. This isn’t any official ranking coming from USA TODAY or the Coaches Poll.

Below is each ACC program’s ranking after the 2020 season, followed by the points, followed by the ranking overall.
