Saints 16, Cardinals 14: Game-winning FG negates go-ahead TD drive

The Saints kicked a game-winning field goal with five second left after the Cardinals had a go-ahead touchdown drive with 1:55 to go.

The Arizona Cardinals, playing without their starters on offense or defense, struggled early against the New Orleans’ Saints starters. They didn’t pick up a first down until the second quarter and didn’t score until the second half.

But quarterback Clayton Tune led the offense to two touchdown drives, including a go-ahead touchdown pass with 1:55 left in the game, but the Saints won the game on a 37-yard field goal with five seconds remaining in the game to give the Saints a 16-14 win.

Here is how it went down.

Defensive starters

The Saints won the coin toss and received the kick to start the game.

The starters on defense were all backups except for defensive lineman Roy Lopez.

The defensive line was Darius Robinson, Lopez and L.J. Collier. The outside linebackers were Jesse Luketa and Victor Dimukeje. At inside linebacker were Krys Barnes and Owen Pappoe. Star Thomas and Divaad Wilson started at cornerback with Kei’Trel Clark playing in the slot. Joey Blount and Dadrion Taylor-Demerson were at safety.

Offensive starters

Marvin Harrison Jr. was the only projected offensive starter to play in the game. Desmond Ridder started at quarterback. Rookie Trey Benson was at running back with Michael Carter coming in as the third-down back. Harrison, Zach Pascal and Chris Moore were at receiver. Elijah Higgins started at tight end. The offensive line starters were Elijah Wilkinson at left tackle, rookie Isaiah Adams at left guard, Trystan Colon at center, Dennis Daley at right guard and Kelvin Beachum at right tackle.

Three-and-outs

The Cardinals did not pick up a first down in their first two possessions. Ridder was sacked twice, did not complete a pass and they rushed for 17 yards.

Harrison out quickly

The Cardinals only kept in Harrison, their top draft pick, for one series, getting three snaps and running one pass route.

Chris Moore leaves game with an injury

Moore, one of the starting receivers, was taken to the locker room in the first quarter.

He returned in the second quarter.

Finally a first down!

It took until the Cardinals’ fourth possession to pick up a first down. It was a 22-yard pass play from Ridder to Pascal.

Saints 3, Cardinals 0

The first points came with 2:58 left in the first half. After the Cardinals failed to convert on fourth down, the Saints went 40 yards in 10 plays but were kept out of the end zone. Blake Grupe made a 26-yard field goal to get on the board.

Cardinals go for it, fail in field-goal range

After the field goal by the Saints, the Cardinals showed a little spark on offense, fueled by Ridder’s running. However, with 32 seconds left in the first half and with fourth down and two at the Saints’ 12, rather than kicking a field goal to tie the game, the Cardinals went for it. The play was there and Andre Baccellia would have scored a touchdown, but Ridder’s throw was off target and they turned the ball over on downs for the second time in the half.

Saints 6, Cardinals 0

The failed fourth down cost the Cardinals six points in the game. Rather than a tied score at half time 3-3, they gave up a 58-pass play to A.T. Parry, and Grupe hit a 33-yard field goal as time expired in the half.

Cardinals 7, Saints 6

Clayton Tune took over at quarterback to open the second half and the offense looked good. He completed four of his five passing attempts for 54 yards and showed good touch and accuracy, something that was missing in his preseason work last year as a rookie.

They went 70 yards in nine plays. Michael Carter ran 11 yards for the touchdown and Matt Prater, on his 40th birthday, hit the extra point to give the Cardinals the lead.

Saints take 13-7 lead

Spencer Rattler took over at quarterback for the Saints and the Cardinals went with their third-stringers, and the Saints found the end zone. Rattler ran four yards for a touchdown to give New Orleans the lead. Initially, it appeared that safety Darren Hall knocked Rattler out of bounds short of the goalline, but it was ruled a touchdown on review.

Cardinals 14, Saints 13

The Cardinals had two comeback wins in last year’s preseason. With 1:55 left in the game, running back Tony Jones took a pass from Tune and ran 10 yards for the go-ahead score.

Dan Chisena had a pair of catches on the drive.

Game-winning field goal by Saints

The defense couldn’t get the job done. Penalized twice for neutral-zone infractions, they let the Saints move down the field and Charlie Smyth made a 37-yard field goal with five seconds left to take the lead.

The Cardinals’ final play was an incomplete pass deep down the field to rookie Tehjuan Palmer.

Cardinals will face local product Spencer Rattler on Saturday

The Cardinals will face former Pinnacle High School standout Spencer Rattler, who is a rookie for the Saints.

Mike Giovando considers himself blessed.

Working with potential quarterbacks at a young age for more than 20 years and full-time for about seven, he’s especially excited that one of those pupils, New Orleans Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler, will be returning home to the Valley for his pro debut Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals.

Rattler passed for 11,083 yards and 116 touchdowns at Pinnacle High School and began training with Giovando while playing for the Scottsdale Firebirds in the sixth grade.

He chose Oklahoma and was considered a Heisman Trophy favorite in 2021, but was benched during the season for some guy named Caleb Williams and eventually transferred to South Carolina.

Even more hard work began last December as he prepared for the Combine and Pro Day with three to four workouts a week. The Saints eventually selected him in the fifth round of the draft. Notably, while he was the seventh quarterback selected in the 2024 draft, he was the first picked after Bo Nix, who was selected 12th overall in the first round.

Giovando acknowledged it was a crucial offseason for his pupil after the ups and downs of his college career.

“He did a good job of not letting that bring him down,” Giovando said. “He got adapted to the pro-style stuff at South Carolina and was excited to get to work and show everybody he has the talent to play at the next level.”

Then, after the offseason program ended, there was more work to be done after Rattler learned how the Saints wanted him to do things.

He told Saints media earlier this week he spent his time prior to the start of training back in Arizona with Giovando.

“Just cleaning up fundamentals and working on little things that we noticed in spring ball and OTAs,” Rattler said. “And really improved in some of those areas and came back and got right back to work.

“Just very small things, footwork-wise – false steps, little punch steps on your drop, not getting too much depth, maintaining that circle in the pocket, not hitching too much. Little, minute things that can add up to negative plays. You’ve got to control that and avoid that.”

Giovando told Cards Wire, “We worked on everything he could possibly work on to be ready to have this opportunity to shine in camp. Footwork. Drops that they like to do. The way they want him to drop. How they want him to get through progressions. Some teams want your left foot up. Some teams want your right foot up in the shotgun.

“Some teams have a crossover when (the quarterback) drops. Some teams have more of like a slide and a shuffle. All those little, tiny things that you probably wouldn’t think matter, but they do. He brought those to my attention.”

Noting that they went “by the book” for the Combine and Pro Day, Giovando said, “When you get to a team, now they say this is how we like to do it. We did tons of reps on the little details; really cleaning up the little things.”

Derek Carr is the Saints starting quarterback and Rattler is currently competing with Jake Haener for the backup job.

Head coach Dennis Allen said, “I think he’s improving every day. There’s still some things that he’s doing – just understanding how to play within the scheme of the offense, how to get through your progressions, knowing how to listen to your feet, when to take your chances down the field, when it’s time to check the ball down – all those things are pretty good learning experiences.”

The next three weeks are obviously important. Allen said, “I think we’re going to let these preseason games play it out. We’re trying to determine if we have a backup quarterback on our roster right now. I’ve seen some signs that I like. And yet, I want to get them into real, live situations, under the lights, and see how both of these guys operate in that environment. I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen out of both Spencer and Jake, and yet, we haven’t made any decisions there. I want to see what they operate like under the lights.

“I would say, I’m going to give these young guys every opportunity to prove that they’re deserving of that role. And that comes through what you do out here on the practice field, and what they’re going to do when they get into the preseason games.”

Giovando, who will be at the game Saturday, is hopeful. His dad, Ken, who passed away four years ago, coached for many years at Scottsdale Community College and Mike played the position and coached for 27 years before finding his niche.

“I love the quarterback challenge, everything it entails,” he said. “Not just throwing, but the mental part. It’s fun to watch guys figure it out and hopefully master it.”

Another one of his “students,” former Gilbert High School and Purdue product Jack Plummer, started Friday night as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers. He has several others in college and trains six or seven at a time in the offseason.

Giovando concluded, “I sit around and go, ‘Wow, it’s so hard to get to this level and yet I have two guys that spent time with me from 12, 13 years old and now they’re getting their shot at their dream.’”

4 player connections between Cardinals, Saints in preseason opener

The Cardinals have a pair of former Saints players. The Saints have two former Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans Saints kick off their preseason schedules with a matchup against one another on Saturday. They play at State Farm Stadium at 5 p.m. Arizona time (here is how to watch, stream or listen to it).

The two teams have a few familiar faces, as the Cardinals have two players who used to play for the Saints, while New Orleans has a pair of players who used to play for the Cardinals.

Who are those players?

Cardinals P Blake Gillikin

Gillikin signed with the Saints as an undrafted rookie in 2020 and was their punter in 2021-2022.

Cardinals RB Tony Jones

Jones also signed with the Saints out of college as a rookie free agent in 2020. He played parts of four seasons for them, appearing in 18 games (six starts) and rushing for 233 yards and two touchdowns.

Saints DT Kendal Vickers

Vickers spent a few weeks on the Cardinals’ practice squad late last season.

Saints S Tyrann Mathieu

It’s been a long time, but the Cardinals drafted Mathieu in 2013 in the third round. He played five seasons for them and has one Pro Bowl and All-Pro season.

Cardinals players to watch in preseason opener vs. Saints

We don’t expect most the starters to play. But these players are the ones to pay attention to for the Cardinals in their preseason opener.

The Arizona Cardinals have their preseason opener Saturday night at State Farm Stadium facing the New Orleans Saints. We know quarterback Kyler Murray will not play in this game or any in the preseason. We don’t expect many other starters to play.

However, there are a number of players we should pay attention to in this first game action of the preseason against an opponent.

Who are they?

QBs Desmond Ridder, Clayton Tune

As the Cardinals only kept two quarterbacks on the active roster all last season, this is a battle for the second spot. Neither has looked great in training camp. Who will stand out in live action?

RB Trey Benson

Benson, a rookie, will likely get extended playing time as we don’t expect James Conner to play. We can see what he has to offer, as it is hoped he can be a productive backup to Conner.

WR Marvin Harrison Jr.

Harrison will play this weekend. We will see how much, though. It might be the first time since the start of training camp that he catches a ball from someone other than Kyler Murray.

TE Elijah Higgins

We don’t expect Trey McBride to play. Higgins started producing late last season. He is only in his second year being a tight end.

OL Isaiah Adams, Jon Gaines, Christian Jones

Not expecting the starters to play, the backups will play significant snaps. Adams and Jones are rookies. Adams is more or less a lock for the roster but we want to see if the promise is there.

Jones is far less certain to make the team. We will get to see him in an island.

Gaines, missed all last season. He is battling for a backup spot on the roster and could be the backup center.

DL Darius Robinson

The Cardinals’ second first-round pick will likely start and get to show off what he can do inside and off the edge. We want to see flashes of greatness.

All the OLBs who play

Since BJ Ojulari got hurt and is lost for the season and we don’t expect Zaven Collins or Dennis Gardeck to play, the Cardinals need to see who can be good rotational guys. Cameron Thomas was promising as a rookie but ended up a healthy scratch the last weeks of the season. Victor Dimukeje had his role diminished last year. Rookie Xavier Thomas has caught the eye of defensive coordinator Nick Rallis lately.

CB Starling Thomas

Thomas is trying to fend off second-round pick Max Melton for a starting job. Melton probably won’t play, as he was hurt most of this past week. Head coach Jonathan Gannon is a big fan of Thomas and he is keeping that cornerback room competitive.

S “Rabbit” Taylor-Demerson

The fourth-round rookie will likely get to play a lot as we don’t expect that Budda Baker or Jalen Thompson will get any action. He was an exciting player in college. Can he show it against NFL competition?

Cardinals get nationally televised preseason game as opponents announced

The Cardinals will open the preseason at home against the Saints and then face the Colts and the Broncos on the road.

While almost all of the attention with the release of the 2024 NFL schedule goes to the regular-season schedule, the Arizona Cardinals, in addition to announcing all their regular-season games, also announced their preseason opponents.

This year, because they have nine home games in the regular season, they will have one preseason matchup at home and two on the road.

Their preseason finale will be nationally televised on CBS. They will face the Denver Broncos on the road and Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday, August 25 at 5:30 p.m. ET (2:30 p.m. Arizona time).

Their other preseason opponents are the New Orleans Saints at home in the preseason opener, followed by the Indianapolis Colts on the road.

The game against the Saints will be at State Farm Stadium and will be scheduled between August 8-11. The game against the Colts will be at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy between August 15-18.

Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon announced previously that the team would hold joint practices again this preseason. He said it would be hot and against a really good AFC team.

That would suggest the Colts, especially considering Gannon and Colts head coach Shane Steichen have a connection having been coordinators together for the Philadelphia Eagles.

So you can expect some official news at some point about joint practices with the Colts.

And perhaps they will do a second round against the Broncos leading up to the preseason finale.
