Russell Wilson passes concussion protocol but won’t start vs. Cardinals

The Broncos decided organizationally to give Wilson another week to recover. It will be Colt McCoy vs. Brett Rypien this weekend.

This weekend, when the Arizona Cardinals take on the Denver Broncos on the road, it will not be the promised matchup between quarterbacks Kyler Murray and Russell Wilson.

Instead, it will be Colt McCoy for the Cardinals going up against Brett Rypien for the Broncos.

Murray is out for the season after tearing his ACL in Monday night’s game against the New England Patriots.

Wilson suffered a concussion in Denver’s 34-28 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Wilson successfully cleared concussion protocols and was a full participant in Denver’s Friday practice, but he has been ruled out of the game on the final injury report.

He did not get a full week of practice reps, having sat out Wednesday and being only limited on Thursday.

It was a team decision to rule him out.

“As an organization, we’ve decided to give him another week,” Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett told reporters Friday.

It will be the first time Wilson has missed a start against the Cardinals. As a member of the Seattle Seahawks, he started against Arizona 20 times in 10 seasons, going 11-8-1 against them.

The Cardinals did not hold a full practice Wednesday and will not again on Thursday, opting instead for walkthroughs for two days before putting on pads on Friday.

Two did not practice and five others were limited.

Cardinals promote TE Maxx Williams, re-sign CB Jace Whittaker, sign QB David Blough

The Cardinals sign TE Maxx Williams from the practice squad, bring back CB Jace Whittaker and sign QB David Blough from the Vikings practice squad.

The Arizona Cardinals made a number of roster moves on Wednesday. They placed Kyler Murray and Rondale Moore on injured reserve and designated Will Hernandez to return from injured reserve.

They also made some signings.

They signed tight end Maxx Williams from the practice squad to the active roster, re-signed cornerback Jace Whittaker and signed quarterback David Blough off the practice squad of the Minnesota Vikings.

Williams, following the season-ending knee injury to tight end Zach Ertz,  was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster each of the last three games. That is the limit for a standard elevation. Since the Cardinals only had two tight ends on the roster, adding Williams makes sense.

Whittaker rejoins the team following the release of cornerback Trayvon Mullen. He will be the team’s fourth cornerback and play special teams.

The move to add Blough is interesting because they also signed quarterback Carson Strong to the practice squad, giving the team four quarterbacks between the 53-man roster and the practice squad.

Blough spent three seasons with the Detroit Lions and even started five games as a rookie in 2019, going 0-5. He will be behind Colt McCoy and Trace McSorley.

Kyler Murray to have knee surgery after Christmas

Surgery is coming for Kyler Murray to repair his torn ACL. It will happen after Christmas.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday, which officially ends his season with only four game remaining in the regular season. His season was already over due to his torn ACL he sustained on the third play of the game on Monday against the New England Patriots.

He has not yet had surgery to repair the knee but it is coming.

Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury spoke to reporters Wednesday and said Murray’s surgery would come after Christmas.

Surgeries can be delayed a bit for a number of reasons. One major one is so that inflammation goes down.

With his recovery time being in the months, waiting a week isn’t that big a thing looking at the big picture, especially when there are a number of reasons that go into the decision to push back a surgery like this.

OL Will Hernandez designated to return from IR

Hernandez, Arizona’s starting right guard, missed five weeks and four games with a strained pectoral.

The Arizona Cardinals could be getting a starting offensive lineman back this week. Starting right guard Will Hernandez, on injured reserve for the last five weeks with a strained pec, was designated to return from injured reserve, allowing him to return to practice.

The team has 21 days to reinstate him to the active roster or he reverts to IR for the rest of the season.

Hernandez missed four games and could possibly return to the lineup this weekend when the Cardinals face the Denver Broncos on the road this weekend.

Hernandez was playing quite well this season before he was injured. His return would be big for quarterback Colt McCoy, who was sacked six times in the Cardinals’ Monday night loss to the New England Patriots.

Cardinals GM Steve Keim takes health-related leave of absence

As he steps away from the team for now, Quentin Harris and Adrian Wilson will take over together.

The Arizona Cardinals are dealing with yet another setback this season. The team released a statement saying that general manager Steve Keim is taking a health-related leave of absence.

The team did not comment more on the situation, citing privacy and legal reasons.

Keim did not give his normal weekly interview last Friday on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM because he wasn’t feeling well.

Things have apparently gotten worse.

In the meantime, while Keim is away from the team, his duties will be carried out between vice president of player personnel Quentin Harris and vice president of pro personnel Adrian Wilson.

This has been one of the strangest calendar years for the Cardinals between the football on the field and things that have happened off of it.

Hopefully, Keim’s health issue is not too serious and he is capable of returning to work soon.
