Will new Boston Celtics big man Blake Griffin bring out the best of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum?

While he might not be the bouncy athlete he was earlier in his career, his passing, rebounding, and veteran leadership should help the team weather early injuries and grow as a team.

Will new Boston Celtics big man Blake Griffin bring out the best of the team’s two star wings, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum?

After denying the club was interested in signing a veteran name for some time, a combination of injury concerns pushed the team to reconsider its stance.

The available veteran swingmen and bigs ranged from Carmelo Anthony to LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMarcus Cousins. However, the Celtics surprised everyone and opted for six-time All-Star Blake Griffin. While he might not be the bouncy athlete he became known as earlier in his career, his passing, rebounding and veteran leadership should help the team weather early injuries.

But will he help Tatum and Brown? The hosts of the Heavy “Celtics Collective” recently broke down Griffin’s fit in Boston, specifically how he’ll complement the Jays.

What can Sam Hauser and Luke Kornet give the Boston Celtics?

Sam Hauser had a strong preseason debut followed by an even stronger game against the Toronto Raptors Wednesday, and big man Luke Kornet is in line to be a starter in certain matchups.

One may be out injured until about the start of the Boston Celtics’ 2022-23 regular season and the other has yet to receive meaningful regular-season minutes consistently. But reserve forward Sam Hauser had a strong preseason debut followed by an even stronger game against the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday. And big man Luke Kornet is in line to be a starter in certain matchups while starting center Robert Williams III is injured.

CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning previews the two prospects who made strides with the Maine Celtics in the G League last year, and he looks ahead to what they could give the parent club in their new supporting roles in a recent episode of the “Garden Report” podcast.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what he has to say about Kornet and Hauser taking on expanded roles next season.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley on Jaylen Brown’s leadership in Boston and beyond

The Celtics star has taken a page from Bill Russell’s book to use his platform to make Boston better for all its citizens.

Simply getting into the NBA is more than many professional basketball players manage, never mind using the platform such an achievement provides to help pull others up in life while trying to grow one’s own career as an athlete.

Cut from the same cloth as his trailblazing predecessor, Boston Celtics Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell, however, star Celtics wing Jaylen Brown has been hard at work doing both since he came into the league in 2016.

And his excellence on the court juxtaposed with his commitment to making a difference off it has not gone unnoticed. Even the elected officials have noted how he uses his platform for the greater good — and we know, because one told us!

Speaking with the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast, Massachusetts’ Representative in the House Ayanna Pressley had plenty to say about the Boston star, the closest thing we have to Russell in the league today.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what the foursome had to say about Brown taking up the mantle set by Russell as a leader far beyond the confines of the parquet.

Despite solid debut with Celtics, Boston’s Blake Griffin hopes for improvement

‘It’s just getting that rhythm,’ noted the six-time All-Star of what was in truth a solid debut despite a few mistakes.

While it was clear that veteran big man Blake Griffin was playing high-level basketball for the first time in a while with a brand new team due to the sort of avoidable mistakes he made in his debut with the Boston Celtics in their 112-103 preseason win over the Charlotte Hornets on Friday, the six-time All-Star wasn’t worried.

“I was pretty sped up,” he admitted while speaking to the media after the Celtics’ road win via NBC Sports Boston. “It’s missed easy stuff, a bad turnover here and there — but that’s part of it, I haven’t really played five-on-five,” he added. “It’s just getting that rhythm.”

Even still, Griffin had a solid outing for Boston despite the rust, putting up 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists in just 16 minutes of play.

“The key is just to every day get a little better,” suggested the former Brooklyn Nets big man, seemingly unbothered by what was in truth a respectable rate of turnovers with 2 credited to him. “Screening, rebounding, making the extra pass, those are less of a rhythm thing.”

“Catching on the roll, even just catching and shooting, sometimes the speed is hard to emulate when you’re working out; it’s not something I’m not used to — the beginning of every season, you’ve got to get back in that rhythm.”

Noah Vonleh Boston Celtics highlights vs. Charlotte Hornets (10/7)

Vonleh played a total of 31 minutes as a preseason starter, and put up some solid numbers in the process.

“Hometown guy makes the team” is always a great narrative for preseason basketball, and for at least one game, local big man Noah Vonleh got one step closer to making that narrative a reality with a solid performance from the Haverhill, Massachusetts native in the Celtics’ 112-103 preseason win over the Charlotte Hornets on Friday evening in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Vonleh played a total of 31 minutes as a preseason starter, and put up some solid numbers in the process. Shooting 6-of-8 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe, the Indiana product put up 14 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal with 4 turnovers and 4 personal fouls.

The former Hoosier will need to clean up his game to see the floor even close to as much as he did, but given he’s with a new team managed a very solid outing with Boston on Friday.

To see how he did for yourself, take a look at the clip embedded above, courtesy of Tomasz Kordylewski’s YouTube channel.

Boston’s Grant Williams just outside Sports Illustrated’s top 100 NBA players for 2022-23

The Celtics forward could easily make this assessment look silly if things go right for him, however.

While Boston Celtics reserve forward Grant Williams is poised to have a big year this season. In the eyes of the NBA analysts of Sports Illustrated, the former Tennessee standout is still just outside their top 100 NBA players list at the start of the Celtics’ 2022-23 campaign.

“Williams was obviously a key ingredient to Boston’s run to the finals,” writes Sports Illustrated’s Rohan Nadkarni of Williams’ impact on the Celtics’ 2022 NBA title near-miss. “He also plays in a perfect context for his particular skill set, and his impact began to wane in the latter rounds of the playoffs.

“Williams can clearly help great teams, however,” adds Nadkarni. “It would be surprising if he does not make the list rather soon.”

Given the lack of big man depth to start Boston’s season with center Robert Williams III and forward Danilo Gallinari out, there is a world in which this assessment could make SI look silly.

But for now, right on the cusp of the league’s 100 best players — either just in or just out — feels about right for Williams heading into next season.

Celtics Lab 145: Honoring Bill Russell’s legacy and talking Boston basketball with Rep. Ayanna Pressley

This one covers everything from Russell’s impact in Boston and beyond to ranked-choice voting and the strengths of clam chowder vs. Chicago hotdogs as arena food.

The Boston Celtics became the cornerstone franchise of the NBA because of Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell, but the iconic center’s legacy cast a shadow not only over the history of the league itself, but American culture more broadly as a central figure of the U.S. Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.

Like many of us, Rep. Ayanna Pressley is a fan of Russell’s for both basketball and social justice reasons, as well as being no small part of several efforts to give the legendary figure his flowers in the form of his statue in the city of Boston and a resolution honoring his legacy of works extending far beyond the basketball court.

Rep. Pressley joined us on the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast for our most recent episode to talk about Russell’s impact on the Celtics, the city of Boston, and our society writ large.

She joins your usual hosts Cameron Tabatabaie, Alex Goldberg and Justin Quinn to chop it up about last season’s finals run, this season’s team, and they even debate the relative strengths of clam chowder vs. Chicago hot dogs as arena food.

Make sure you don’t miss this episode of the Lab or miscast our representative of Massachusetts seventh district as a Bulls fan — either would be a very big unforced error indeed.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania adds some context to the Celtics’ Ime Udoka scandal

Charania didn’t add much to what we already know in a recent appearance to the Pat McAffee show, but did share some new details.

With the Boston Celtics and suspended head coach Ime Udoka remaining tight-lipped about Udoka’s transgressions that led to his being put on ice for the 2022-23 NBA season (and quite likely permanently), almost no new details have emerged about the situation from reputable news sources.

Criticized for his vague reporting in his rush to publish alongside peer Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, The Athletic’s Shams Charania made an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show” recently to share the scope of what his sources have made known to him regarding the Udoka affair. And while it is not much in the way of new details, their earlier inclusion might have helped tamp down some of the problematic internet sleuthing that occurred in the wake of initial reports.

In this interview, The Athletic NBA insider lets it be known that at least with what has been reported thus far, the details emerging from the Celtics’ external investigation are the entirety of what got Udoka into hot water.

Shams also reveals that, despite salacious implications or claims elsewhere, Udoka’s misconduct is only related to the one woman he had an improper relationship with.

Boston’s Jayson Tatum thinks it ‘feels like we’re leaving off from the second half of last season’

“The way that we’re moving the ball, playing with each other, it just feels natural, and it’s fun playing that way,” offered the St. Louis native.

Even though the Boston Celtics’ bench mob couldn’t seal the deal against the Toronto Raptors in the team’s 125-119 overtime loss on Wednesday night, star Celtics forward Jayson Tatum likes how his team is playing to start the 2022-23 campaign.

Boston quickly built a lead that surged to 19 points before interim head coach Joe Mazzulla took out the starters. Boston looked every bit the contender it was at the end of last season.

“It feels like we’re leaving off from the second half of last season,” said Tatum after the game via CLNS.

“The way that we’re moving the ball, playing with each other, it just feels natural, and it’s fun playing that way,” he added. “I’m just happy with the way we’re playing. It’s fun. We’re moving the ball, everyone’s touching it. It’s been fun the last two games.”

Sam Hauser Boston Celtics highlights vs. Toronto Raptors (10/5)

So far in the Celtics’ preseason contests the Virginia product has been absolutely crushing it from beyond the arc.

Reserve Boston Celtics swingman Sam Hauser was hyped up by his teammates as being a potentially major part of the Celtics’ offense in the 2022-23 campaign, which of course elicited skepticism from fans and analysts given how seldom he saw the floor in 2021-22.

But so far in the Celtics’ preseason contests the former Virginia player has been absolutely crushing it from beyond the arc, opening the floor and breaking the backs of opposing defenses. In Wednesday’s 125-119 preseason loss to the Charlotte Hornets, Hauser put up 22 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in 26 minutes of floor time, shooting an absurd 8-of-12 from the floor overall, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range.

Take a look at the highlight reel put together by YouTuber Tomasz Kordylewski to see how electric Hauser’s 3-point stroke has become.
