Why one analyst thinks the Boston Celtics shouldn’t give Jaylen Brown the supermax

Trading Brown for a package of players and draft picks could provide the Celtics with more flexibility per this podcast host.

The Boston Celtics have been eliminated from the Eastern Conference finals once again just a season after making the NBA Finals, prompting discussions about the future of star forward Jaylen Brown.

While Celtics team president Brad Stevens expressed a desire to keep Brown, there are concerns about offering him a supermax contract on a five-year extension worth up to $290 million.

Brown’s performance in the recent series against the Miami Heat may have exposed weaknesses in his game, making it questionable whether he can truly reach superstar status. The Celtics would then have three options: Give him the supermax extension, keep him as an unrestricted free agent next year, or trade him.

Trading Brown for a package of players and draft picks could provide the Celtics with more flexibility and potential for improvement according to the host of the “MDJ” podcast.

Could the Boston Celtics be at risk of losing Grant Williams to the Orlando Magic?

According to new reporting, it could be on the table this offseason.

Could the Boston Celtics be at risk of losing reserve forward Grant Williams to the Orlando Magic?

According to new reporting from Heavy’s Sean Deveney, it could be on the table. The former Tennessee standout is a restricted free agent this summer.

“He is 24. He has proven his chops, on both ends,” shared an anonymous Western Conference executive.

“You can’t coach that kind of experience. He’s got it. He is a perfect fit there,” they continued. “You want to become a playoff team, he is the kind of guy they’d want. But Orlando would have to overpay to get him, and it is tough to expect a team to do that.

“Obviously, if you are Williams, you want to see the Magic being aggressive on the market,” observed the unnamed exec.

With recent reporting that the Celtics hope to retain both star forward Jaylen Brown with a likely supermax contract extension and Williams, it sounds as if it would take a truly substantial overpay on the part of the Magic to land the Charlotte native.

But as the old adage goes, it only takes one team to fall in love, making, perhaps, for a fairly intense offseason for Boston about to unfold.

What will the Boston Celtics do this offseason?

With so many critical decisions for the ball club coming at once, the stakes could hardly be much higher.

The Boston Celtics are looking ahead to the 2023 offseason after a particularly disappointing end to their 2022-23 NBA season.

Celtics President of Basketball Operation Brad Stevens has already committed to Joe Mazzula as the coach next season, but there has been much discussion about the assistant coaches coach Mazzulla will bring in to rebuild a depleted staff.

What’s next on the Boston Celtics’ offseason checklist?

The Boston Celtics have a lot of things they need to take hard looks at this offseason with the NBA’s new CBA starting to take effect.

The Boston Celtics have many things they need to take hard looks at this offseason with the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement putting the intended pressure on teams such as the Celtics when it comes to building a championship roster.

Whether to offer star forward Jaylen Brown a supermax extension worth close to $300 million with another, bigger supermax deal for co-star Jayson Tatum lurking a season beyond next. Whether to make trades to soften the blow on the salary cap. As does discerning which players might be needed to do so loom large and figuring out whether they can afford to re-sign reserve forward Grant Williams are just a few of the bigger issues facing Boston.

NESN’s George Balekji recently addressed all of the above, who Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla might add to his bench for next season’s coaching staff, and more in a recent short.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what he has to say.

The best of Jayson Tatum with the Boston Celtics in the 2023 NBA playoffs

Jayson Tatum might not have had his season end the way he had hoped, but he still had a postseason worth looking back on.

The St. Louis native put up 27.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game while turning the ball over 2.8 times and fouling 2.2 times per contest. Averaging 40 minutes per game in the playoffs, Tatum shot 45.8% from the field overall, an out-of-character 32.3% from beyond the arc, and 87.6% from the free-throw line.

Would you trade Jaylen Brown for the Portland Trail Blazers’ No. 3 pick and Anfernee Simons?

Host of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast John Zannis”absolutely” would.

As the Boston Celtics head into an offseason of questions, will the team make significant changes to their roster to set the stage for another run at a title in the 2023-24 NBA season.

The biggest decision that could alter the trajectory of the franchise involves star forward Jaylen Brown, who became supermax eligible after earning second-team All-NBA honors.

With a massive $295 million dollar contract extension on the table, would either side walk away from that deal? If so, should the Celtics trade Brown to avoid losing him for nothing in unrestricted free agency?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast, John Zannis and Bobby Manning, recently discuss a hypothetical trade to such an end that has been getting a fair amount of currency in the broader NBA media sphere of late.
