Arkansas bounces back, beats Southeastern Louisiana in Game Two

Kent State transfer Michael Turner hit a two-run shot in the seventh to lead Arkansas over Southeastern Louisiana.

Arkansas baseball evened its series against Southeastern Louisiana in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday, 4-2.

The Lions tied the game at 2 when they plated a pair of runs in the sixth on a home run by Preston Faulkner. Arkansas answered with a homer itself when Michael Turner sent a two-run shot over the fence to provide the winning edge.

Freshman left-hander Hagen Smith was excellent against for the Diamond Hogs, throwing seven innings while only giving up two hits and three walks and striking out nine Southeastern Louisiana hitters. Zebulon Vermillion and Brady Tygart finished the final two innings to shut things down.

Turner, a transfer from Kent State, was moved up to the 3-hole and went 2 for 4 with three RBI and the homer. His other knock-in came in the third to open the scoring when he doubled to left-center to score Zack Gregory.

The Razorbacks and Lions were set to get in game three of the series later Saturday afternoon in advance of the rain expected on Sunday.

Sticks of the Game: Bohrofen off the schneid for Arkansas

Jace Bohrofen’s two-hit game is a positive step for the Arkansas lineup.

Arkansas’ bats have struggled a bit in the early going of the 2022 season, including Friday against Southeastern Louisiana. But one expected key hitter may be coming into his own.

Oklahoma transfer Jace Bohrofen was one of the biggest additions to the lineup this year after being ranked as the No. 34 prospect in the country two years ago coming out of high school. He started 29 games with the Sooners last year and took hold of an outfield job at Arkansas quickly, though his bat had been slow to adjust.

He had a pair of knocks to break his hitless streak against Southeastern Louisiana and was joined by the reliable Cayden Wallace and fellow outfielder Zack Gregory as Arkansas’ Sticks of the Game in the opener against SELA.

Diamond Hogs give up seven in the sixth, fall to SELA in opener

Southeastern Louisiana scored seven runs in one inning – their total for the game – in a win over Arkansas on Friday.

Arkansas’ first rough pitching outing of the season was too much for the quiet bats to overcome.

Southeastern Louisiana scored all of its runs in the sixth inning as the Lions surprised the Razorbacks on Friday afternoon, 7-3.

Arkansas pitchers had been excellent through the team’s first seven games, never giving up more than five runs in a single game. Things fell apart badly in just the one inning against SELA as the Lions had 10 batters reach base in the frame.

Arkansas starter Connor Noland worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits with no walks while striking out five and giving up three runs. He was pulled in the sixth after hitting the first batter of the inning and giving up a pair of singles.

His replacement, Kole Ramage, gave up a single, threw a wild pitch and walked two batters before he was pulled. Ramage didn’t retire a batter.

Isaac Bracken then tried his hand. He, too, hit the first batter, followed with a strikeout, but was pulled after walking the next Lions hitter.

Lefthander Zack Morris gave up a single to his first batter, walked the next and finally got Arkansas out of the inning by inducing a fielder’s choice.

For the frame, SELA had seven runs on just four hits.

Arkansas pulled two runs back in the seventh when Peyton Stovall walked with the bases loaded and Cayden Wallace plated another run with a sacrifice fly.

The two teams play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch of the first game scheduled for noon.

Inclement Weather Forecast Shifts Weekend Schedule

Due to forecasted rain for Sunday, Arkansas’ weekend series with Southeastern sees a shakeup.

Death. Taxes. Inclement weather shaking up weekend baseball games.

That seems to be the trend for the No. 10 Arkansas Razorbacks, as their weekend series with Southeastern has been changed.

Due to forecasted rain for Sunday, game three of the series with the Lions will now be played on Saturday as part of a double-header, Arkansas baseball announced Friday.

Friday’s series-opener will go on as scheduled, with Connor Noland taking the bump for the Razorbacks for the 3 p.m. start. The first game of Saturday’s twin bill will now take place at noon, with game two scheduled to begin 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Hagen Smith is slated to start game one, while Jaxon Wiggins gets the call for game two.

According to Arkansas Athletics, tickets to Sunday’s game are no longer valid. Fans who purchased tickets to Sunday’s game can exchange them for Saturday tickets, or for a future game based on availability. Tickets for Saturday’s originally scheduled game will be good for both games.

The schedule shakeup is the second in as many weekends for the Razorbacks. Last weekend, frigid temperatures and rain caused the playing surface at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas to be unplayable, forcing Arkansas to play a double-header with Stanford and Louisiana last Sunday.

Bats awaken as Arkansas hammers Nebraska-Omaha

Arkansas’ cold stretch of hitting is over after the Diamond Hogs reached base 25 times on Wednesday against Omaha.

The Arkansas lineup smashed three home runs and Diamond Hogs pitchers scattered 10 hits in the Razorbacks’ 15-3 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Wednesday.

The game was only a one-off as Arkansas prepares next for a weekend series against Southeastern Louisiana at Baum-Walker Stadium. The No. 3 Razorbacks’ win moved them to 5-2 on the season.

In all, the Diamond Hogs reached base 25 times. Catcher Michael Turner had the best day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly. Shortstop Jalen Battles had two hits, a walk and two runs. Chris Lanzilli went 2 for 4 with a double, three RBI and a run. Peyton Stovall and Brady Slavens also homered.

Arkansas took control of the game with a five-run fifth and exploded it with a seven-run fifth.

All the while six Arkansas pitchers struck out eight Mavericks batters while walking just three with the only extra-base hit being a double. Senior left-hander Evan Taylor picked up with the win when he retired the side in order in fifth and sixth.

First pitch against SELA is Friday at 3 p.m.

Jalen Battles’ homer lifts Arkansas in Round Rock finale

Arkansas won two of three in Texas after beating Louisiana on Sunday night.

With just five outs between Arkansas and a losing weekend in Texas, Jalen Battles came up huge.

The senior shortstop cranked a three-run home run with Arkansas trailing by one in the eighth inning to help lift the Razorbacks, 6-4, over Louisiana in the final game of the Round Rock Classic.

Chris Lanzilli and Jace Bohrofen walked ahead of Battles when he took the second pitch from Drew Shiflett over the rightfield wall to move the Diamond Hogs ahead, 5-3. The knock was Battles’ only one of the game as Louisiana held the Razorbacks to just six hits.

Arkansas pitching was even better. The Ragin’ Cajuns had just three hits, all of which came off starter Jaxon Wiggins who worked six innings while allowing just three runs.

The No. 2 Hogs had lost earlier to No. 8 Stanford, 5-0, in the first of a doubleheader. Weather had caused that game to be postponed from Saturday.

Arkansas is back at Baum-Walker Stadium on Wednesday for a one-off game against Nebraska-Omaha. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Round Rock Classic Preview: Louisiana

Arkansas was never tested in its win over Indiana on Friday. That will likely change this afternoon when the #2 Hogs take on #6 Stanford in the Karbach Round Rock Classic. But the tournament does not end for the Razorbacks today. They have a Sunday afternoon matchup set for 4:00pm against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.

But the tournament does not end for the Razorbacks today. They have a Sunday afternoon matchup set for 4:00pm against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.

Louisiana lost its tournament opener to the Cardinal 5-1 on Friday afternoon. They came to Round Rock with a 4-1 record after taking 2 of 3 from UC-Irvine to open the season. They then knocked off Southeastern Louisiana, a team Arkansas will host next weekend, 6-5 on Tuesday.

Former Arkansas assistant and Dave Van Horn acolyte Matt Deggs leads the Ragin’ Cajuns. This is his third year at the helm in Lafayette and is coming off a 32-23 season when they won their division in the Sun Belt Conference. Connor Kimple leads their offensive attack. He smacked three home runs in the opening series against Irvine and provides veteran leadership in the lineup.

Tommy Ray leads the Cajun pitching staff and was saddled with the loss against the Cardinal on Friday. Jeff Wilson took the ball for Louisiana last Sunday and is lined up to take on the Hogs this weekend, though no starter has officially been named. Wilson is a 6’6″ senior with plenty of experience.

Arm of the Game: Connor Cruises Past Hoosiers

He’s only two starts into the season, but Arkansas righty Connor Noland has looked like the ace of the Razorbacks staff. In yesterday’s 5-2 win over Indiana in the Karbach Round Rock Classic the senior from Greenwood ate up innings, held the Hoosiers at bay, and worked out of the few jams he created for himself.

Noland may not blow you away with his stuff, but he has learned to pitch and looked like the leader of the staff on Friday.

Noland had an efficient outing, completing six full innings on just 86 pitches. He scattered five hits, walked a pair, and struck out 10 while allowing only one earned. In addition to racking up strikeouts (almost 1/3 of all batters faced walk back to the dugout), Noland continued his early trend of inducing weak contact. Through two starts opponents have a .600 ground ball average on balls in play.

The Hogs entered the year with a litany of questions about their pitching staff. And they added another to the list when Peyton Pallette went down with Tommy John surgery. Connor Noland has clearly risen to the challenge after his first two starts.

Cayden Wallace didn’t want to be outdone by Brady Slavens so he went perfect, too

Arkansas’ bats haven’t even truly come alive and yet they continue hitting the ball just fine in their 3-1 start to the year.

Arkansas baseball started strong in Texas at the Round Rock Classic on Friday, dispatching Indiana, 5-2.

The Razorbacks banged out nine hits and walked another four times to chase Hoosiers starter John-Biagio Modugno after five innings. After knocking in four runs against him, the Diamond Hogs tacked on an insurance run in the seventh.

Leading the way were Arkansas’ usual suspects. Cayden Wallace had a perfect day at the plate. Robert Moore knocked in two runs with two hits. Brady Slavens reached twice and Michael Turner tripled.

In the meantime, starter Connor Noland and reliver Kole Ramage struck out 16 Indiana batters en route to the relatively easy victory.

The Hogs are back at it Saturday against No. 6 Stanford. In the meantime, these were the hitters of the game.
