Allstate Sugar Bowl What Happened

Kansas State got up 10-0 highlighted by an 88-yard touchdown run from Deuce Vaughn. And then a whole lot of bad things happened for the Big 12 Champion. Alabama scored 35 straight points with Bryce Young throwing four touchdown passes, including a 12-yarder to Jermaine Burton with ten seconds left in the first half to close out a 98-yard touchdown drive in the final minute.

Down 14-10, Kansas State could’ve kicked a field goal at the end of the first half. It went for in on fourth down a few times on the drive, but misfired on 4th-and-goal. Young marched the team down the field, got the touchdown pass, Kansas State’s onside kick to start the second half was recovered by Bama, and it was never close from there.

Kansas State got two field goals from Ty Zentner, and it closed out the seeking with a one-yard Jordan Schippers touchdown run, but it didn’t get in the end zone after Vaughn’s big dash. It had a few chances, but couldn’t close.

– Third Down Conversions: Kansas State 7-of-18 – Alabama 4-of-10

Allstate Sugar Bowl What It All Means

Alabama just did THAT to the Big 12 Champion that beat the College Football 3 seed, TCU. It was a strong finish to the season with three straight wins before coming up with this, but it was too late. In an expanded College Football Playoff Bama would’ve been the proverbial team no one wants to face, but instead, it was another blowout bowl win for Nick Saban.

Ho hum. It’s the 12th straight year with 11 or more wins and 14th in the last 15 years under Saban. Including all of the CFP games, Alabama has gone 11-2 in post-season/bowl dates in the last eight years and 15-4 since 2009.

It was as if Kansas State didn’t trust that it could straight up beat Bama. Of course the talent level wasn’t comparable, but this was a shaky Crimson Tide team all year, and yet the Wildcats never seemed all that confident – or consistent.

Not kicking the field goal at the end of the first half, the onside kick to start the second half – those risks were way too big, they both backfired, and the game turned into a rout. Alabama woke up the defensive stop, and then it was all Bryce Young from there.

It’s still all good. Kansas State won the Big 12 Championship, came up with ten victories for the first time since 2012, and it still made it to the Sugar Bowl. The Cats are now 1-2 under Chris Klieman in bowls, but it’s still 3-2 in the last five going back to 2016.

Alabama vs Kansas State Allstate Sugar Bowl 5 Things To Know

Allstate Sugar Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

– By any normal standards it’s been a wonderful football season for Alabama. It blew out its arch rival Auburn, won ten games, made it to the Sugar Bowl, and came up with a thrilling win over Texas on the road. The two losses were this close to going the other way – losing on walk-offs at Tennessee and LSU – and …

It was a total disaster. Starting with losing the College Football Playoff National Championship to Georgia, 2022 has been a rough year for the Tide – at least by its own unreasonable-yet-attainable standards. But it just came up with a massive recruiting class, there’s a ton of big-time talent coming back, and now there’s a shot at closing out the calendar year with something big.

The stars are here – the NFL guys are supposed to play in this. Bama isn’t 100% operational – a slew of parts are in the transfer portal – but the starting 22 will be fine. The same goes for …

Kansas State gets almost everyone of note back. The Big 12 champion won ten games, held on to take down TCU in the conference title game, beat its rival Kansas, and now it gets a shot to do something massive with a Sugar Bowl win over Bama.

It’s a rock-solid team that doesn’t beat itself, plays a hard-nosed brand of defense – the D was the best in the Big 12 – and owns the turnover battle. It’s hardly going to freak out just because it’s playing Alabama.

This is the third bowl appearance for the Wildcats under head coach Chris Klieman. Last year’s team walked over a depleted LSU in a sad Texas Bowl, and the 2019 version couldn’t get past Navy in the Liberty. However, the program has won three of its last four bowls.

How’s this for a bowl run for Alabama? Since closing out the 1975 season with a Sugar Bowl win over Penn State, it’s 34-14 with the last three losses coming in the College Football Playoff National Championship. How do you know your program is doing well? This is Alabama’s 15th bowl/national championship game in nine years of the CFP era.

Can we get a good Sugar Bowl? The Ohio State College Football Playoff win over Alabama in 2014 was exciting, and the Texas win over Georgia at the end of the 2018 season was interesting – even though the Bulldogs didn’t seem to wake up until it was too late.

Eight of the last ten, though, have been decided by double-digits, including last year’s depressing- it took on a different tone after QB Matt Corral was injured – Baylor 21-7 win over Ole Miss.

CFN Experts CFP, NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why Alabama Will Win The Allstate Sugar Bowl

Alabama has its guys.

If everything goes according to plan, QB Bryce Young and Edge rusher Will Anderson will be out there. Most of the main skill parts will be there, the defense has a little something to prove, and the team – sort of like the 35-16 win over Michigan in the 2020 Citrus – should show up and flex a little muscle.

It starts by holding up on the defensive front.

Kansas State can throw just fine with Will Howard at quarterback, but it really gets rolling when it controls games with the rushing attack, going 7-0 when coming up with 199 yards or more.

The Tide might have their problems defensively, but only five teams were able to get past 80 yards on the ground. With the time off to rest up and prepare, this group will be swarming all over Deuce Vaughn and …

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

Why Kansas State Will Win The Allstate Sugar Bowl

Kansas State doesn’t get enough appreciation for its offensive balance.

The defense is strong, the offense can keep things moving, and it’s Kansas State, the special teams are solid. Most impressively, 2,737 yards passing, 2,725 yards rushing, and Bama has to prepare for all of it.

This isn’t exactly a vintage Crimson Tide defense.

It’s very, very good – and elite by most normal standards – but Auburn was able to run way too easily on it, Hendon Hooker almost won the Heisman as he carried Tennessee to a win, and LSU averaged over five yards per carry in its victory. The offense should be able to mix it up, the offensive line will hold its own, and the time of possession will matter.

On the other side, Alabama might have Bryce Young, and the offense is deadly no matter what, but it doesn’t have the high-end wide receivers to make the K-State secondary sweat.

Basically, Kansas State has to be Kansas State. It has to win the turnover battle, penalties won’t be a problem, and it should be its normal frustrating self with the defense holding up just fine on third downs.

Why Auburn Will Win

Is Lane Kiffin there yet?

Is he or isn’t he going to be the next Auburn head coach? At the very least that has turned into a nice distraction for an Auburn team that should be able to play loose and free in this.

No matter what, there’s going to be a big change after this. Either Auburn loses and the program’s new direction is underway, or it pulls this off and 1) it’s going bowling and 2) it means it beat Alabama.

The Tigers have been solid under interim head man and Tiger running back legend Cadillac Williams. They beat Texas A&M, held down the WKU high-powered passing attack in a 41-17 win, and they came into this with a rolling ground game that should be able to move a bit.

Tank Bigsby and Jarquez Hunter each hit the 100-yard mark against the Hilltoppers making it three straight games – and four in the last five – with 250 rushing yards or more.

The Alabama run defense has been solid overall, but LSU, Ole Miss, and Tennessee were all able to crank up the production against it. Now it’s Auburn’s turn.

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Alabama Will Win

It’s still crazy possible.

It would take a whole slew of things to happen, but Alabama still has a teeny tiny little bit of a shot at making the College Football Playo…

Okay, so that’s almost certainly not going to happen, but by any normal measure going 10-2 with a win over the arch-rival on the way to a New Year’s Six bowl is a great year. Of course, Alabama always expects more, but there’s still plenty to play for.

The offense should steadily be able to keep things moving. Auburn is bad on both sides of the line on third downs, the Tide defensive front should live in the backfield, and there isn’t enough coming from the Tiger passing game to be too worried about.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Throw out the Austin Peay scrimmage of last week, and for the most part Alabama doesn’t have a problem with turnovers. It’s not going to give up enough mistakes for Auburn to take over and win this.

Even so, the Tigers will be strong for about 20 minutes as they hang around and make it a battle. The Alabama offense will take over with a few quick scoring drives and will coast from there.

It might not be a total wipeout – the Tide will pull away late – but it’ll be a strong, efficient finish to a rough regular season.

Why Austin Peay Will Win

The Governors are fun.

Of course they’re not going to beat Alabama, but they might be more than just an easy scrimmage with a defense that’s among the best in the FCS – allowing fewer than 300 yards per game – led by a fantastic secondary that’s great at coming up with third down stops.

Young head coach Scotty Walden is a rising star, former Middle Tennessee QB Mike DiLello has been strong throwing 23 touchdown passes, and the ground game should be able to come up with a few decent runs.

They were good in the 38-27 loss at WKU to start the season, but …

Bowl Projections

Why Alabama Will Win

Alabama is going to try to get this over fast to rest up for the Auburn game, but that’s not really how Nick Saban rolls.

It’s been a tough fight all year with battles in game after game, and now it’s time to have a little fun.

Yeah, Austin Peay has a nice defense, and yeah, the offense is just good enough to generate a few points. However, the Bama pass rush should take over right away – the Governor line has been way too leaky lately – and the running game should be able to bash away.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Bryce Young isn’t going to take any chances. He can hit the short plays and rely on the offensive line and this should be a breeze.

Austin Peay really is a good FCS team that should come up with a few good drives – and a few early stops – but Alabama will enjoy the moment. The fan base that might be down without a run for the national title, but it’ll get to enjoy the show.

Alabama Women’s Soccer receives a No. 1 seed in NCAA tournament

No. 1 Alabama women’s soccer hosts first NCAA tournament game Friday

The Alabama Crimson Tide women’s soccer has received a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, and as a result, the team will have its first game in Tuscaloosa.

The Tide will host Jackson State, the winners of the SWAC, who are 11-7-1 on the year at 6 p.m. CST on Friday.

Alabama finishes the year 19-2-1, including a 15-game winning streak that earned the Tide the No. 1 ranking in the country. Alabama lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks in the SEC championship snapping the streak.

South Carolina is the No. 3 team in Alabama’s region along with No. 2 Duke and No. 4 USC. So, there is a chance the Tide and Gamecocks meet again in the Elite Eight.

If Alabama can get past Jackson State on Friday they will face the winner of Arizona State vs. Portland in the second round.
