Alabama baseball sweeps Northeastern opening weekend of 2020 season

After a win on Friday and Saturday for the Crimson Tide, Alabama defeated Northeastern 6-3 on Sunday to sweep the series on opening weekend.

After an impressive win on Friday and Saturday for the Crimson Tide, Alabama defeated Northeastern 6-3 on Sunday to sweep the series on opening weekend.

Although Northeastern put three runs on the board early in the 1st inning, Alabama was able to bounce back.  Alabama was able to score 2 runs in the first inning, 1 run in the second inning, 2 more in the 3rd, and one last run in the 5th to steal the series sweep.

Offensively, Alabama did well as they had their 3rd straight 12 hit game. The Crimson Tide was led by freshman Owen Diodati who went 3-3 while recording a team-high three RBI and matched the team-best mark for runs scored with two.

Alabama head baseball coach Brad Bohannon had this to say after the game:

“It was a really good day for us today, especially once we settled down after Antoine (Jean) lost his mind there the first couple batters of the game. The pitching was awesome once Antoine got past the first couple batters and settled in, then he was great. (Jacob) McNairy was outstanding out of the pen and Chase Lee just looked unhittable, so those guys were all really, really good and they commanded their fastball while throwing multiple pitches for a strike. We also had a lot of hard contact today. Northeastern didn’t help us as much today as they have the last two days, so we didn’t quite score as many runs, but we probably had a higher quality at-bat percentage than the past couple days. Overall, this was another really good day for us and a great opening weekend.”

Alabama will host Troy on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 3PM CT, and then on Wednesday, the Crimson Tide will host the Alabama State Hornets at 2PM CT. Both games can be seen live on SEC Network+.

Sophomore pitcher Connor Shamblin got the win while pitching 5 innings and only allowing 3 hits while striking out 5 and walking one.

Alabama head baseball coach Brad Bohannon had this to say after the game:

“There was really good effort today. Connor (Shamblin) had a great outing, got us off to a great start. I’m really proud of the way he managed the first inning and settled in. He did a great job of throwing all of his pitches for a strike. Then, Casey Cobb, Garret Rukes and Brock Guffey all came in after him and were just outstanding. It was also another day where we had some production through the lineup. We were a little inefficient offensively, made a couple of mistakes on the bases, but overall, for game two, I’m really pleased.”
