Odds peg the Browns solidly in 3rd place in the AFC North

Odds peg the Browns solidly in 3rd place in the AFC North but there’s value in betting on Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns have a new GM, a new head coach, several important new players and newfound confidence entering the 2020 NFL season. Alas, the professional bookies don’t see anything different in the big picture from Cleveland in this upcoming campaign.

The odds squarely peg the Browns to remain in third place in the AFC North, hammered behind the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers. At BetMGM the Browns are +500 to capture the division title, behind reigning champs Baltimore (-200) and Pittsburgh (+350).

Because you can bet on just about anything these days, the odds for which team finishes in third place strongly favors the Browns:

If you’re looking for some investment value and not completely sold on the Browns catching the Ravens, the +225 line for Cleveland to finish second is a nice potential payout.

Steelers’ James Harrison claims Mike Tomlin gave him an envelope for his illegal hit on Browns WR Mohamed Massaquoi

Steelers’ James Harrison claims Mike Tomlin gave him an envelope for his illegal hit on Browns WR Mohamed Massaquoi

Former Pittsburgh Steelers defender James Harrison claims that longtime coach Mike Tomlin gave him “an envelope” of an unspecified nature after Harrison was fined for a vicious hit on Cleveland Browns wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi in a 2010 game.

In a podcast disseminated by Barstool Sports, Harrison admitted to former Steelers teammate Willie Colon that Tomlin gave him something to help ease the sting of the $75,000 fine from the NFL for the hit.

Colon asked Harrison what the biggest fine he ever got in a game was, and the intense former EDGE immediately brought up the hit on Massaquoi.

Or, in Harrison’s words: “Yeah. Dude, how are you going to fine me? Dude, listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, everything I love, on my daddy’s grave, I hit that man with about, max, 50 percent of what I had and I just hit him because I wanted him to let loose of the ball. If I had known it was going to fine me $75,000, I would have tried to kill him.”

He continued,

“Dude, I’m telling you. 75 (thousand)? And I ain’t going to lie to you, I ain’t going to lie to you, when that happened, right, and the G-est thing Mike Tomlin ever did, he handed me an envelope after that. I ain’t going to say what, but he handed me an envelope after that.”

Steelers ownership vehemently denied any knowledge of the alleged envelope incident.

Massaquoi suffered a concussion on the play.

Browns get unexpected showing of support from Stephen A. Smith

Browns get an unexpected showing of support from ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith a frequent critic of the team in the recent past

Normally when Cleveland Browns fans think of ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, it’s generally not in a positive light. Smith was a frequent critic of the team’s rise in prominence a year ago, chastising his media brethren for prematurely anointing coach Freddie Kitchens and his Browns as the rising stars.

Smith’s skepticism proved correct. So when he turns around and praises the Browns, new GM Andrew Berry, several new acquisitions and specifically young QB Baker Mayfield, it’s worth paying attention.

Smith even anointed the new-look Browns as the biggest threat to challenge the Baltimore Ravens for AFC North supremacy in 2020, ahead of the Steelers.

“I think they’re the biggest threat (for the Ravens) right now, at least on paper, Smith said on First Take. He then enthusiastically listed off why he believes in the Browns.

“Let’s give credit where credit is due. We don’t expect Baker Mayfield to regress. You have a new coach in Kevin Stefanski who clearly is an upgrade from Kitchens. If you’ve got Jarvis Landry with Odell Beckham Jr., [David] Njoku is your tight end, he’s going to be back. Austin Hooper from Atlanta as a free agent. I look at all of those things — their running game, their tight end, the offensive line was buffered. Baker Mayfield is expected to upgrade.”

Smith concluded with a nod to his doubts about the Browns last year.

“Remember, I didn’t believe in them at all last year, because I thought it was too much hype,” Smith said. “Now that they’ve gotten knocked back down to earth, I do believe they can be a legitimate threat right now.”

Arizona Cardinals 7

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The over/under on the Cardinals for 2020 was 6.5 in the opening line after the Super Bowl. Vegas has moved it up a half-tick after a draft that opened with Isaiah Simmons from Clemson being chosen by Arizona. This could be a major challenge hurdle to clear as the Cardinals face six games in the NFC West against tough foes before they get a look at the rest of their schedule. They were 3-13 and 5-10-1 in the last two seasons.
