The interior of the offensive line might not generate a ton of buzz, but ask Michigan how much of an impact a key transfer can make – Olusegun Oluwatimi from Virginia was a dominant force at center. Watch out for a few instant fixes from this year’s batch.

Oregon Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Ducks miss from the Pac-12 slate?

It would be nice to miss a USC or Utah from what was the Pac-12 South, but not having to deal with UCLA isn’t a bad thing and not playing Arizona this year might be a big positive.

Here’s the biggest bonus – USC, Oregon State, Washington State – those last two will be even nastier this season – are all coming to Autzen. However …

Oregon Football Schedule What Really Matters

For a program that’s thinking really, really College Football Playoff big, there are just enough nasty road dates to be a problem.

Going to Texas Tech early on will be dangerous. Arizona State is always difficult at home, and going to Utah and Washington will be battles. Again, for what Oregon is dreaming of, there can only be one loss on the way to the Pac-12 Championship. That’s not going to be easy with those landmines.

Oregon Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Start with this – they’re not opening the season with Georgia this time around. Everything else is easy by comparison, but going to Texas Tech is a problem.

If the Ducks really are Pac-12 Championship/CFP good, they should be able to get through this without losing twice. With all due respect to a strong Oregon State team – because it’s an Oregon home game – at Texas Tech, at Washington, at Utah, USC. Win three of those four, and they should be deep in the mix for everything they’re shooting for.

Stanford Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cardinal miss from the Pac-12 slate?

New head coach Troy Taylor has a whole lot of work to do – there aren’t any layups for the Cardinal in the Pac-12, so it’s a plus no matter who they’re missing. Even so, it would’ve been nice to not have to play USC or UCLA from the old Pac-12 South. Considering Arizona State is rebuilding, missing it on the slate hurts. However, missing Utah makes up for it.

Stanford Football Schedule What Really Matters

There aren’t any massive breaks.

Going to Hawaii shouldn’t be a problem to start the season, but that’s a long trip to kick things off on a Friday before having to go to USC the week after. Of course Sacramento State has to be a win for a Pac-12 team, but that’s a dangerous FCS team that won’t be a total layup.

Winning early is a must – the Cardinal have to take care of as many home games as possible with a run of five in six games from September 9th through November 4th because …

Stanford Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Yikes on the finishing kick.

Stanford won’t be a sure thing against Arizona at home, and it’ll likely be the underdog against Oregon, UCLA, and Washington, but it has to find a way to come up with an upset or three in Palo Alto because of the second half after the break.

Along with the home dates against the Bruins and Huskies, going to Colorado, Washington State, and Oregon State will be a problem, and hosting Notre Dame after dealing with Cal won’t be a breeze.

Beat Arizona, though, and there’s a shot to start 3-1. There’s a good chance to piece together three wins the rest of the way to get bowl eligible – with a little bit of luck.

Florida Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Gators miss from the SEC slate?

As always the Gators have to play LSU. To make matters worse against a loaded team, it’s on the road. On the positive side, the other game against the West is at home against Arkansas. However, that’s sandwiched between the dates with Georgia and LSU.

Offsetting the road game against LSU is who’s missing. There’s no Alabama to deal with, Texas A&M isn’t on the schedule, and there’s no Auburn, Ole Miss, or Mississippi State.

Florida Football Schedule What Really Matters

The Gators have GOT to win the home dates.

Again, the LSU date is on the road, but the Georgia game – as always – is in Jacksonville. Tennessee has to make the trip to Gainesville, and so does Florida State. That doesn’t mean everything is in easy driving distance of The Swamp, but there are enough to pile up a slew of wins.

There’s a reason the team needs to pull those off …

Florida Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Opening the season at Utah is a problem.

That’s a tough way to kick things off, putting all the pressure on the home game against Tennessee – at least more than there already will be. Lose that, and then things get dicey with road games at Kentucky and South Carolina before dealing with Georgia.

If the Gators can’t get by the Vols, it’s going to take a lot of work to be better than 4-4 – probably more like 3-5 – before dealing with November.

That’s not to say they can’t beat the Wildcats or Gamecocks on the road, but that’s not a given.

It’s Florida. It’s going to come up with a good second season under Billy Napier and it’ll easily go bowling. It’s going to be a fight at times, though.

Georgia Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Bulldogs miss from the SEC slate?

The two-time defending national champs don’t have to deal with Alabama, LSU, or Texas A&M. Those are all possible contenders to challenge for the SEC title. Even for a team as strong as this, not playing those three helps.

They also miss Arkansas and Mississippi State. That leaves just Ole Miss and Auburn from the West – that’s okay considering the Rebels have to come to Athens.

Georgia Football Schedule What Really Matters

Overall the schedule isn’t that bad – more on that in a moment – but the two biggest games on the slate aren’t in Athens.

Florida and Tennessee.

Obviously the game with the Gators is – as always – in Jacksonville, and the date with Tennessee is in Knoxville. That’s not to say the Dawgs shouldn’t win or won’t be favored, but they should by expected to rip through everyone else on the slate by at least double-digits. If they get by the Vols and Gators, it’ll be smooth sailing because …

Georgia Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It would’ve been nice to see Georgia get someone nasty in non-conference play.

The Oregon game to open last season wasn’t exactly competitive, but at least that was a big program on big program crime. This year’s non-conference schedule? UT Martin, Ball State, UAB, and Georgia Tech.

Will any of those four come within 24 of the Dawgs?

With no Alabama or LSU on the slate, that means anything less than 11-1 would be a total disappointment. That means the season will be about focus. There was a blip in 2022 against Missouri, and the Kent State game took a while to wake up for, but both were wins. It’s going to take a total mental lapse not to roll though this schedule.

Kentucky Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wildcats miss from the SEC slate?

Kentucky gets Alabama.

It’s at least a home game, but it has to play the Crimson Tide right after a home date against Mississippi State. Missing LSU isn’t a bad thing this year, and not having to deal with Texas A&M should be a big bonus. The Cats don’t play Arkansas, Auburn, or Ole Miss, either.

That’s all fine – missing likely bowl bound teams from the SEC is always a plus – but again … Alabama is on the slate. That’s bad, but it gets worse …

Kentucky Football Schedule What Really Matters

November is a monster.

There’s a week off before the finishing stretch, and the Tennessee game is at home, but three of the last four games are on the road going to Mississippi State, South Carolina, and over to Louisville to end the regular season. All that is wrapped around Alabama.

Before dealing with those final five games, and before the week off, UK gets Missouri at home (good) and has to go to Georgia (bad … very bad).

But …

Kentucky Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Overall, though, this isn’t that bad a schedule.

Going to Georgia is obviously a bear, but Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama are all in Lexington. That, and it helps that the team isn’t exactly extending itself in non-conference play.

It gets that rivalry game against Louisville, but it starts the season against Ball State, Eastern Kentucky, and Akron.

Those should be three layups before going to Vanderbilt. Roll through that, and then it’s about the home game against Florida. Get to 5-0 and that makes that brutal second half of the slate a tad nicer.

South Carolina Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Gamecocks miss from the SEC slate?

Any time you don’t have to play Alabama or LSU in the SEC your schedule isn’t that bad. The Gamecocks miss two of the West stars, and they don’t have to deal with Arkansas, Auburn, or Ole Miss.

That means they have to deal with Texas A&M and Mississippi State. The latter is manageable at home, but it’s a sandwich date between road trips to Georgia and Tennessee. The former is on the road after going to Missouri.

South Carolina Football Schedule What Really Matters

November is just fine. Get through the first part of the season, and there’s a chance to make a whole lot of noise.

Closing with Clemson is rough no matter what, but at least that’s in Columbia. That closes out a perfectly-timed month without having to leave home.

It’s a beauty of a way to end. There might be five games away from home in the first two months, but Jacksonville State, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky are all winnable home games before finishing with the Tigers.

South Carolina Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Not having to deal with Alabama and LSU is huge.

The Georgia game is on the road, and going to Tennessee is rough. However, Florida is a home game Missouri and Texas A&M are manageable road dates. Combine all of that with the never-leave-home November, and there’s a lot with this slate to like.

Of course it’s not all going to be easy – going to Texas A&M might be nasty this year, and you can all but forget about taking the East with those road games at Georgia and Tennessee – but the Gamecocks should be in for a big year with this schedule.

Tennessee Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Volunteers miss from the SEC slate?

As always, Tennessee has to play Alabama in the rivalry date. That’s always been a bad break, but the team showed it can pull off the win in last year’s thriller. Now it’s in Tuscaloosa.

It also has to deal with what should be a far nastier Texas A&M, but that’s at home and coming after a week off. That means there’s no Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Mississippi State, or Ole Miss.

Missing LSU is a huge help, but the other four are winnable SEC games the Vols don’t get a shot at. However …

Tennessee Football Schedule What Really Matters

Beat Florida in Gainesville to start the season and the SEC slate isn’t all that horrible. Going to Kentucky and Missouri isn’t all that bad, and the Georgia game is late in the season in Knoxville. However, there’s a run of three straight SEC road games – they’re wrapped around a layup against UConn.

At Alabama, at Kentucky, at Missouri. The Vols don’t have an SEC home game from October 14th until November 18th, but there’s a bigger issue …

Tennessee Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Tennessee doesn’t just want to go bowling. It’s going to be dreaming of the SEC Championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

There are more than enough winnable games to get close. Getting to ten wins is one thing, but getting to 11 – which is what the Vols need for CFP consideration – is another.

At Florida, at Alabama, Georgia. Going at least 2-1 against that threesome is hardly a given for anyone, but on the plus side, Virginia, Austin Peay, and UConn is a light and breezy non-conference slate, and getting Kentucky, UConn, Missouri, and Vanderbilt in the second half of the year will help.
