Colorado Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Buffaloes miss from the Pac-12 slate?

It would’ve been nice to have Cal on the schedule. That’s one of the few teams in the Pac-12 that Colorado – even an improved one under Deion Sanders – can look to for a likely win, but on the plus side, not having to deal with Washington helps.

There are five Pac-12 road games, with dates at Oregon, UCLA, and Utah the biggest problems. However …

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Colorado Football Schedule What Really Matters

Unlike most Pac-12 teams, Colorado doesn’t have to deal with a run of three road games in four weeks. Throw in the week off coming on October 21st, and there’s a nice midseason stretch when the team only leaves Boulder once from October 7th to November 17th. That’s when the wins have to start piling up, because …

Colorado Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s a rough slate for Coach Prime’s bunch.

The improvements are coming, but there’s still a whole lot of rebuilding to do. Starting out at TCU and then dealing with Nebraska doesn’t exactly ease into the era. Throw in the always testy showdown against Colorado State, and there’s no true layup on the slate.

There are enough winnable games to make a big jump, though. Get by Nebraska and Colorado State, and the Buffs can looks to home games against Stanford and Arizona to get in the mix for six victories and a bowl. Lose any of those, and it’ll be tough.

From a few thumpers who can stop the run, to a few hybrids who can do a little of everything, to a bunch of defenders who’ll step right in and become quarterbacks of the defense, there’s going to be a whole lot of noise being made by this year’s group of linebackers in the transfer portal.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Washington State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cougars miss from the Pac-12 slate?

Washington got to miss USC and Utah last year, and now it’s Washington State’s turn to catch the mammoth break. The Trojans rolled Wazzu 30-14, the Utes won a 21-17 fight, and now they’re been replaced with Colorado and UCLA being left off the Pac-12 schedule. That’s a solid deal.

Not all is perfect with the Cougar slate, though.

Washington State Football Schedule What Really Matters

Washington State gets five Pac-12 road games. One of them is Washington, but that counts. That also means four of the last six games are away from home, and it gets even worse than that.

The Arizona State game is on the road on October 28th. The only thing that matters about that – besides the travel – is Tempe, Arizona is probably going to be nicer weather-wise than Pullman.

Arizona? That’s a home game, but the weather probably won’t be that bad on October 14th. Colorado is used to playing in snow and cold – if that happens – meaning Stanford on November 4th is likely the only team to potentially be affected by the surroundings.

Washington State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

The Cougars were able to win seven games last year even with USC and Utah to deal with. This schedule is just workable enough to hope to at least his the 2022 mark.

Wisconsin is a home game, but this should be a far more dangerous Badger team. Going to Colorado State and dealing with Northern Colorado shouldn’t be a problem.

Stanford, Arizona, Colorado. None of them went bowling, and all three are home dates. Take care of at least two of the non-conference games, handle the winnable home dates, and pull off a win at, say, Cal and/or Arizona State, and all should be okay.

College Football Transfer Portal 2023 Rankings: Head Coaches

New head coaches in new places – who are the seven head coaches who switched jobs, and who’ll make the biggest impact?

Which head coaches are going to new places and who should be the best of the lot? They might not be in a transfer portal, but like the top prospects, a few key coaches moved around.

Transfer Portal 2023 Rankings: Head Coaches

Okay, okay, there isn’t a transfer portal for college football head coaches, but the ones at new gigs were out there in the mix – just like the players who switched schools – and they found new landing spots that will make them very, very big this season.

No, really. Why are there coaches lumped into a thing about the college football transfer portal? If you go through the lists of where all of the top prospects are going, the new head coaches in new places had a whole lot to do with the moves.

How do the head coaches who changed jobs rank? Who’ll make the biggest impact and who were the best gets of the bunch? There were six college football head coaches who left for other college football gigs, and we’ll throw in a former NFL head man, too.

2023 Transfer Portal Rankings
QB | RB | WR | TE | OT | OG/C
DE/EDGE | DT | LB | CB | Saf | Coaches

7 Scott Satterfield

New School: Cincinnati
Former School: Louisville

This worked for all sides. Louisville – at least parts of the fan base – was ready to move on, the school got the guy it wanted before hiring Satterfield, and the former guy landed in a sweet new gig. The pressure will be on, though. Satterfield didn’t exactly light it up at Louisville, and now he has to keep the success going at Cincinnati as it goes into the Big 12.

6 Jamey Chadwell

New School: Liberty
Former School: Coastal Carolina

This sort of makes sense. Think of it this way. Billy Napier turned Louisiana into a national thing and a Sun Belt powerhouse, and he parlayed that into the Florida job. Chadwell turned Coastal Carolina into a national thing and a Sun Belt powerhouse, and – not to program shame – his next step up is Liberty? It’s a great get for the Flames – Chadwell was in the rumor mill for a slew of bigger-name openings – but this might just be a pit stop.

5 Jeff Brohm

New School: Louisville
Former School: Purdue

Timing. Louisville made a big push for Brohm – a native son and former Cardinal quarterback – the last time around. Brohm stayed put at Purdue, took a program in need of a total reboot – really, look at how bad things got before he arrived – and got it to the Big Ten Championship last year. It was time to make the move. With the shifting away from divisions, he got Purdue about as far as he could.

4 Hugh Freeze

New School: Auburn
Former School: Liberty

Well there you go, SEC. You got one of your own back. It might have been a rough exit out of the conference, but Freeze did huge things at Liberty to show just how good a head coach he really is. Forgetting all the past issues, here’s the problem – it’s not like he won anything at Ole Miss. Even so, the guy knows how to coach a football team and he’s going to crank up the Auburn offense in a hurry thanks to a lot of help from the transfer portal.

3 Matt Rhule

New School: Nebraska
Former School: Baylor (but, really, the Carolina Panthers)

He makes the list, just because. He might not have switched head coaching gigs – he was fired by the Carolina Panthers and was readily available – but he was one of the splashiest of the new coaching gets. He was phenomenal at Temple, great at Baylor, and the NFL is the NFL – that’s about luck as much as anything else. It’s a big name head man in a big-time gig – the spotlight will be on right away.

2 Deion Sanders

New School: Colorado
Former School: Jackson State

Flip a coin on whether or not Coach Prime should be No. 1 on this list, and no argument if you think he should be.

For a program that – at least on the field – might have been the worst among the Power Five conferences last season, Sanders provided and instant jolt of … everything. Star power, national interest, and talent, talent, talent. He made it extremely clear from the start that he was going to bring in guys who could play at a high level, and the transfer portal certainly reflected that.

No, don’t expect Colorado to be this year’s USC, and yes, this is going to take a little while. But if you’re a fan of the Buffaloes, how much fun has this been so far? The only reason he’s not No. 1 is because …

1 Luke Fickell

New School: Wisconsin
Former School: Cincinnati

Since the start of the College Football Playoff era, Wisconsin has been – at least by wins – among the best Power Five programs to not make the mini-tournament.

The program has been great for the last few decades, but it hit a hard ceiling under former head man Paul Chryst. In comes Fickell, and while the proof will be in the results, the tweaks are there to suggest that something big is about to happen.

Basically, picture Wisconsin, but with a competent passing game. If it seems like Fickell brought in a dozen new quarterbacks through the transfer portal, you’re not far off. That, and he was able to keep around most of the great parts already in place.

Missouri Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Tigers miss from the SEC slate?

Having to play LSU this season isn’t going to be easy, but at least that’s in Columbia. The annual date against Arkansas is always manageable, but that’s on the road to end the regular season.

That means the Tigers don’t have to deal with Alabama. That’s obviously always good, and not having to play Texas A&M this season might be a huge positive, too. They also miss Auburn, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State.

Missouri Football Schedule What Really Matters

Can Mizzou beat Kansas State? It wasn’t pretty last year, but at least this time around the Wildcats have to make the trip over to Faurot. Win that, and it’s going to be a huge start to the season.

South Dakota, Middle Tennessee, Memphis, and on the road against Vanderbilt – that has to be a 4-0 stretch to go along with whatever happens against Kansas State. 5-0 is very, very possible, but …

Missouri Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Can Missouri build itself up over the first half of the season to go on a roll when the SEC slate kicks in full force?

Yeah, it’s a relatively easy first half, but that means there’s no break the rest of the way. Tennessee and Florida are home games, and there’s a week off before going to Georgia, but there’s an off chance the team isn’t favored over the final seven games of the season.

In other words, again, a big start is a must. Do that, and then own home field and all will be fine. That’s going to be far easier said than done.

Washington Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Huskies miss from the Pac-12 slate?

The Huskies got to enjoy missing USC and Utah – yeah, that helped the 10-2 regular season record – but now they’re back on.

Washington lost to UCLA, but now that’s not a worry. The 54-7 win over Colorado was fun, but that’s not happening this year. The Bruins and Buffaloes are off the slate, but that’s not a bad deal overall – the Huskies still get to face everyone from the former Pac-12 North, including Cal and Stanford. But …

Washington Football Schedule What Really Matters

The USC game is in Los Angeles, and that’s followed up by the date with Utah.

So last year’s two best Pac-12 teams have to be dealt with in back-to-back weeks in the second half of the season. Making this even worse is that they’re part of a run of three road games in four weeks, and going to Oregon State won’t be a picnic.

On the plus side overall, there are just our Pac-12 road games. Going to Arizona and Stanford isn’t that bad, and getting the Utes, Oregon, and Washington State in Seattle is terrific.

Washington Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

There’s no real fluff to use as a true tune-up.

Yeah, Tulsa is close, but that’s an FBS team – there aren’t any Central Creampuff Tech’s to use as a paycheck scrimmage.

Starting with Boise State isn’t easy, and going to Michigan State should be much more difficult than the home test last year. Overall, though, it’s an okay schedule with just enough issues to keep Washington from doing better than last year’s two-loss run.

Even so, this is still a dangerous team that could put up a monster record if it wins two of three against Oregon, USC, and Utah.
