Zulgad: Vikings become impossible to dismiss after overtime victory vs. Bills

From @jzulgad: After their come-from-behind win over the Buffalo Bills, you can’t dismiss the Minnesota Vikings anymore

The Vikings had done exactly what the skeptics anticipated when they fell behind the Buffalo Bills by 17 points late in the third quarter Sunday at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. Minnesota entered the game against one of the NFL’s top teams with a 7-1 record but carried the asterisk of having only one victory (Miami) against a team with a winning record.

As the Vikings fell behind by three scores against Josh Allen and the 6-2 Bills, the naysayers collectively nodded, knowing that Minnesota had been a pretender. Kirk Cousins might have had four game-winning drives in the fourth quarter — including one last week in Washington — but any talk of this being some type of special season for the Vikings could stop.

Only that didn’t turn out to be the case.

In one of the craziest regular-season games in the Vikings’ 62-year history, coach Kevin O’Connell’s team came away with a 33-30 overtime win that showed a resilience that was even surprising for this group. In the last minute of the game, with the Vikings trailing by four points, Cousins was stopped on fourth-and-goal from the Bills 1.

[lawrence-related id=68872]

That crushing moment was followed by Allen fumbling a snap with 49 seconds left that enabled Eric Kendricks to recover the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. That gave the Vikings a three-point lead. Allen got the ball back with 41 seconds left and guided the Bills on a five-play, 69-yard drive that finished with a Tyler Bass field goal to force overtime.

The Vikings went 60 yards on 12 plays to open overtime, getting the ball to the Bills’ 2, before Dalvin Cook lost 3 yards and Cousins was sacked at the Bills’ 15. Greg Joseph, who had missed a key extra point in the fourth quarter, hit from 33 yards.

By this point of the craziness, no one thought the game was over.

The Bills, needing a touchdown to win and a field goal to tie, reached the Vikings’ 20 before Allen’s pass was picked off by cornerback Patrick Peterson for his second interception of the day in the end zone. That sent the NFC North-leading Vikings home with an 8-1 record and even more confidence and swagger than they did at the start of the day.

They had become the first team to beat the Bills at Highmark Stadium when trailing by at least 14 points at halftime. The last time the Bills lost a home game when leading by 14 or more at the half was Nov. 10, 1968, at War Memorial Stadium.

The game was filled with Vikings’ hiccups. Everything from Cousins’ two interceptions to Joseph’s latest miss on an extra-point attempt to a bend-but-don’t-break defensive effort that seemed very close to breaking far too often.

But that’s the beauty of these Vikings. They have flaws but somehow stick around long enough in games that it has become impossible to dismiss them. O’Connell gets much of the credit for this. In his first season as an NFL coach, O’Connell has instilled a belief in this team that they are never out of it and clearly the players are buying what he’s selling.

This is especially important with Cousins, who previous to this season likely would have had his day ruined by either of the interceptions he threw Sunday. At least that would have been true with Kirk Cousins. But “Kirko Chains” — the guy who parties with teammates on the plane ride home from wins — has become to Cousins what the Incredible Hulk was to Dr. Bruce Banner.

Kirk Cousins would put up big stats, while ultimately not being able to help his team do the most important thing: win. In the last two weeks while in difficult environments, Kirko has told the adversity to get lost and done enough to escape with victories.

His stats aren’t the same as in the past — his 71.8 passer rating Sunday was his lowest since a Week 2 loss in Philadelphia and his eight picks this season are one more than he had all of last year — but Sunday’s win gave him as many victories as the Vikings had in 2021 and his most since Minnesota made the playoffs after winning 10 regular-season games in 2019. Fans might argue that quarterback wins are meaningless, but the guess here is O’Connell disagrees.

Cousins’ confidence is only boosted by the presence of wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who had an unbelievable performance against the Bills. He caught 10 of the 16 passes thrown to him for a career-high 193 yards and a touchdown.

This included a phenomenal one-handed catch on a fourth-and-18 play late in the fourth quarter. Jefferson made the catch as he was falling backward and somehow took it out of the hands of Bills cornerback Cam Lewis, robbing Lewis of an interception and keeping the Vikings’ drive alive. We already knew Jefferson was a special player, but this is a game that will be attached to his name just as the Monday night game and Thanksgiving Day game in 1998 became attached to Randy Moss’ name.

The Vikings’ winning streak is now at seven games with a three-game homestand (Dallas, New England and the Jets) on tap and confidence at a high. It was impressive coming back from 10 points down in the fourth quarter last week in Washington, but to leave Buffalo with this type of victory is a different story.

The Vikings will move up in many power rankings and dismissing them as a Super Bowl contender no longer will be possible.

As for being exposed on Sunday in Buffalo, the Vikings instead served notice that they can go into a hostile environment, take a punch or five in the face and still beat a Super Bowl champion. Even the biggest skeptics have to be impressed by that.

Kevin O’Connell updates the media on injured players from Sunday

The Vikings did not come out of the game unscathed on Sunday

The Minnesota Vikings are riding high after a 33-30 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. They came from behind after being down by 17 points, which is very impressive. What was even more impressive was how they did it with the injuries they sustained during the game.

The Vikings saw three starters go down with injury during the game in Christian Darrisaw, Akayleb Evans and Za’Darius Smith. Only Smith returned to the game and head coach Kevin O’Connell updated us on the injuries of all three.

Evans left the game in the second quarter and did not return while Darrisaw left with the Vikings down by 10 points. Smith returned to the game but kept cycling in and out with the injured knee.

We will keep you updated on the injury status of all three and the rest of the team throughout the week.

The Vikings do something to the Bills that hasn’t happened since 1968

The Vikings had quite an impressive win on Sunday and they did so in historic fashion

The Minnesota Vikings found a way to extend their winning streak to seven games with a fantastic 33-30 win over the Buffalo Bills. The most important part of the game was the tremendous comeback engineered by quarterback Kirk Cousins.

The Vikings were down by 17 points to the Bills on the road and they found a way to win the game. It was also the Vikings’ seventh-consecutive win in one score games.

In doing so, the Vikings accomplished something not done in Buffalo for 54 years.

Not only were they the first team to accomplish the feat at Highmark Stadium, it was the first time it had happened in the NFL, as the last occurrence had the Bills still in the American Football League.

It’s going to take a lot to stop this Vikings team.

Watch Justin Jefferson make one of the greatest catches ever

The most impressive catch in Vikings history

What an immaculate game we got to see between the Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills. The Vikings came out on top 33-30 and it featured arguably two of the best catches of the year.

It started with Stefon Diggs who skied high on a third down play and snagged the ball out of mid-air for a first down.

Justin Jefferson saw that and told Diggs to hold his beer.

With the game on the line on fourth down, Jefferson skied up and with one hand, took the ball from the defender and extended the Vikings drive when they needed it the most.

Considering situation and down and distance, this is arguably the greatest catch of all-time. Jefferson continues to dominate the competition and is now the league-leader in receiving yards.

Vikings never quit, Kirk Cousins leads 17-point comeback win

The Vikings found a way to win again in what is arguably the game of the year

The Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills just played in the game of the year.

Kirk Cousins led a 17-point comeback to defeat the Bills 33-30 in overtime. They didn’t make it easy, but nothing has been for this team.

The game started out with a bang for the Vikings. They extended their lead with points on the opening drive and currently have a league-high 42 points.  Cousins found Justin Jefferson on a fade route and he celebrated with the Griddy while faking a hamstring injury.

[lawrence-related id=68863]

After the opening drive, it was the Josh Allen show for quite a while. The star quarterback was questionable all week with a UCL injury in his throwing elbow but he played the entire game. He was outstanding all game making his signature plays off-script throughout. He finished the game 29-43 for 330 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions to go with 84 rushing yards on six carries.

One of the other major storylines in the game was the Vikings’ first game playing against Stefon Diggs. He was all smiles before kickoff but he turned it on once the game started. He was incredible on Sunday catching 12 passes for 128 yards and had one of the best catches of the year that rivaled Odell Beckham Jr.’s from his rookie year in 2014.

Justin Jefferson saw that catch and decided to top him snagging an incredible fourth-down catch away from the defender with one hand. He was tremendous in this game, topping Diggs’ with 10 catches for 193 yards and a touchdown.

The Vikings got down 17 points and this is where they have found ways to thrive. Cousins led another comeback on the season, making it six total on the season. He was making some great plays and maneuvered the pocket really well, especially after Christian Darrisaw left the game in the fourth quarter to be evaluated with a concussion.

Turnovers were the biggest key in this game. Cousins threw two interceptions which led to three points for the Bills but the three turnovers by Allen were the key points of the game.

On fourth down, Allen threw an interception in the end zone and Patrick Peterson returned it 35 yards and which started the Vikings’ touchdown drive. The biggest one was in the fourth quarter after the Bills stopped the Vikings on fourth and goal from the one when Allen fumbled the center exchange and Eric Kendricks recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown.

This is where we had our first controversy of the game, as Josh Allen did successfully lead a drive to kick a field goal but on a deep pass to Gabe Davis, the ball hit the ground. It was called a catch but the booth didn’t trigger a review fast enough which was suspect, but it happens.

The Vikings won the coin toss and drove down the field mostly on the shoulders of Dalvin Cook who had 26 yards and helped keep the chains moving. They got inside the five after a brilliant throw and catch from Cousins to Jefferson. They couldn’t punch it in from inside the five-yard line and settled for a Greg Joseph field goal.

On the ensuing possession, Josh Allen drove the Bills inside the red zone but made a fatal error and threw the ball right to Patrick Peterson to finish the game.

Despite the turnovers, Cousins was consistently clutch once the fourth quarter started. He finished 30-50 for 357 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Up next, the Vikings host the Dallas Cowboys who are playing the Green Bay Packers on Sunday afternoon. Tipico Sportsbook currently has the Cowboys as 2.5-point favorites. The Vikings magic number to win the division is down to four and still have hopes to win it on Thanksgiving night against the New England Patriots.

Watch Dalvin Cook show his brother James how to be great

Cook turned on the burners to score his first touchdown of the game

The Minnesota Vikings had just allowed the Buffalo Bills to kick a field goal. That put the Vikings down three scores and Dalvin Cook took that personally.

On the first play of the ensuing drive, Dalvin Cook busted out his second 50+ yard touchdown run of the season with an 81-yard touchdown.

Earlier in the game, his little brother James was a yard short of scoring a touchdown. Older brother was able to beat him to the punch, as the brothers have more than 30 family members and friends in attendance.

The Vikings will try to build some momentum from that play and win their seventh-straight game.

Justin Jefferson sets another NFL record vs. Bills

Another record set by the superstar wide receiver

The Minnesota Vikings struck gold when they selected wide receiver Justin Jefferson at the 22nd overall selection in the 2020 NFL draft. He has arguably been the best receiver in the National Football League during the course of his first three seasons.

Over that time, he has set numerous records and did so again versus the Buffalo Bills. When Jefferson topped 100 yards on Sunday, it was his 20th such game in his career, which set an NFL record that he held with both Randy Moss and Odell Beckham Jr.

What’s most impressive about Jefferson’s incredible start to his career is that he was able to achieve that number in just 42 games and he can still add to that number over the final eight games of the season.

The best part for Vikings fans is that Jefferson is only getting started.

Akalyeb Evans ruled out with a concussion

Not great news for the rookie cornerback

The Minnesota Vikings were already short-handed at cornerback when they put Cameron Dantzler on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

His replacement was rookie Akayleb Evans, who unfortunately was ruled out of his first career start with a concussion

Evans had been playing well outside of allowing a touchdown to Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis.

In his place, the Vikings could finally give second-round pick Andrew Booth Jr. his first defensive action of the season.

Justin Jefferson fakes hamstring injury when celebrating touchdown

Jefferson had Vikings fans worried after this celebration

The Minnesota Vikings got off to a great start against the Buffalo Bills. They forced a three-and-out on the first drive of the game and followed it up with a touchdown drive.

Justin Jefferson scored his fourth touchdown on the season when quarterback Kirk Cousins hit him on a fade route. He got a little creative with the touchdown celebration.

While hitting the Griddy, Jefferson grabs his hamstring but he ended up faking it and walked to the sideline just fine.

This isn’t the first time that the dance was hit in this fashion. In Saturday’s South Carolina vs. Florida matchup, Gators linebacker Ventrell Miller did that after securing the tackle.

The creativity makes the game fun. Who knows what Jefferson might do next.

Vikings inactives for Week 10 vs. Bills led by Dalvin Tomlinson, Josh Allen active

Much of the same for the Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings released their inactive list ahead of Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills and there aren’t any major surprises. As was previously announced, defensive end Dalvin Tomlinson leads the inactives.

None of the other names are a surprise, as they have been inactive for each game outside of the Miami game where Luiji Vilain suited up when D.J. Wonnum was out with an illness.

For the Bills, starting quarterback Josh Allen is officially active but according to The Star Tribune’s Andrew Krammer, Case Keenum has been taking all of the warmup throws. It remains to be seen whether Allen will start, but being active is an important step in making that happen.

The biggest inactive for the Bills is CB Kaiir Elam, who was listed as doubtful on the final injury report.

The game kicks off at noon and should be a good one.
